00:00Andrew Painter made his spring debut.
00:02It was his first big league spring training outing since that exact date in 2023.
00:10So three years to the date from his first big league spring on Sunday, March 1st, he went six up
00:17and six down against the New York Yankees.
00:19Pop out, ground out, strike out, ground out, line out to right.
00:22What did you make of Andrew Painter if you had the chance to watch any of his start, his two
00:26-inning start against the Yankees?
00:28You know, it's funny.
00:28I mean, I thought he looked great, you know, and then you get the stuff plus grades after and they
00:33weren't as loving.
00:37I don't take too much of it.
00:38He threw 20 pitches.
00:40He threw 13 fastballs and he pounded the strike zone.
00:44I think the clear goal there was just to get out and get comfortable again.
00:49And I think he was probably well aware of the last time he threw in a spring training game setting.
00:53So I think it was very positive.
00:56The command overall looked very good in a short sample there.
01:01And I think there's more VLO in there as he gets more comfortable.
01:04And I'm not too worried about it.
01:06Now, the shape is going to be a little bit more VLO dependent.
01:09And so you're going to want to see him more at the 97, 98.
01:12But I think this was a great start for him.
01:15And, you know, again, that's where I think sometimes the immediate stuff plus cards that we get after every outing
01:19can sometimes take away from what we really need to just watch and the context of the situation.
01:24And I think given the context of the situation, this was a great start to the spring for Andrew Painter.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Andrew Painter, again, six up and six down with a punch out against the New York Yankees in his spring
01:35debut this year.
01:37Last prospect that I want to hit on with you is Ryan Waldschmidt of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
01:41And this comes in recommendation to Peyton Genis, who loves what Ryan Waldschmidt has done.
01:46Waldschmidt, much like McGonagall and much like Griffin, could have a route to playing time sooner than I think a
01:52lot of people would expect.
01:54Is this one of those guys that could kind of speed run the minor leagues?
01:57He was a first round pick of Arizona in 24 out of the University of Kentucky.
02:02I think so.
02:03You know, I wouldn't be surprised.
02:05I think there's some buzz around that, you know, around the D-backs org that like this guy could could
02:10get up there and help this team that has a very unique outfield situation right now.
02:17I think like Lourdes Gurriel apparently is ahead of schedule and that that helps.
02:21But I still think you're not going to rush things to too much there.
02:25And when you look at the skill set that Waldschmidt brings to the table.
02:29OK, I know you don't want a guy to debut just a short platoon, but I think that's even a
02:33guy that you could still or excuse me.
02:35They're short platoon.
02:36I still think it's a situation where he could at least do that out of the gate and you ease
02:41him in more and more.
02:42I also just think with the defense, he brings in a corner.
02:44I like Alec Thomas, but I think Waldschmidt could give you a lot more.
02:48And the skill set is one that I think will play as well.
02:50He's super patient.
02:52There might be a little bit more whiff, but he's super patient at one of the lowest chase rates in
02:57the minor leagues last year.
02:58He doesn't deviate from the approach.
03:00He pulls the ball in the air at a high clip that will be rewarded very consistently in in Arizona.
03:06And then on top of that, he's hitting the ball harder than he ever has this spring.
03:10You have a 112, a 111 and a 107 all in the same game the other day.
03:17And even the outs otherwise have been extremely, extremely loud.
03:21I think the defense has come along so much to where he looks like you can play in above average
03:25corner.
03:25And he gives you speed as well as a guy that can take 20 plus bags.
03:29So, I mean, this is a player that you can utilize in different roles.
03:33Again, he destroys lefties, but I think if he's up there, he should be playing every day.
03:37But with the questions in the outfield where it's Lawler, Alec Thomas, and then Corbin Carroll, who may be banged
03:41up for the first couple of weeks.
03:43I think there's a strong case that, you know, Waldschmidt could get out there and make the team.
03:47You're going to send him to Albuquerque and it's going to be bombs away anyways.
03:50Right.
03:51Can I ask Albuquerque, but Reno, Reno, Reno, Reno, Reno.
03:55Reno will go play in Albuquerque too.
