AMG’s Bold Move: Building Their Own Engine Against All Odds!
Transcript
00:00but the guys weren't ready to give up just yet they knew that they couldn't compete with mercedes
00:04in terms of resources but they were confident in their ability to out engineer them so they
00:09started working on their very own engine the result was the 3.0 liter m104 which boasted
00:15more power and torque than the original 300 sl engine this engine would become the foundation
00:21of all amg vehicles until 1992. in the meantime mercedes continued to try and put an end to amg
00:28but their efforts only backfired and made amg more popular than ever before in 1973 mercedes
00:35introduced a new model the 450 sl which was essentially a larger and more luxurious version
00:41of the 300 sl despite its popularity the 450 sl was not without its problems many owners complained
00:49about the car's handling which mercedes tried to fix by offering a special handling package
00:54but this only made things worse as the package was poorly designed and dangerous to drive when amg
01:00heard about this they decided to offer their own handling package to the public the result was the
01:05450 slc 5.0 which was so much better than the competition that many people referred to it as
01:12the original handling pack in anger by this point it was clear that mercedes couldn't get rid of amg and
01:18that they had to work together so in 1974 the two companies formed an official partnership which
01:25allowed amg to use mercedes's engine and model designations this gave amg access to a wider
01:31customer base and helped them grow into the global brand that we know today under the partnership
01:36agreement amg was required to produce at least one homologation car per year homologation cars are
01:42special editions of road cars that are built to meet minimum requirements for racing the most famous
01:48famous example is probably the subaru imprisa wrx sti
