00:00when jack hughes scored i screamed so loud that my kids were a little panicked at first and then
00:08the roof blew off my house and later in the day we went to the rinks i went to three
00:12rinks that day
00:15and at every rink everyone was talking about it everyone was cheering everyone was doing different
00:19things and it was like the coolest thing and then all the videos from other rinks playing
00:24stops and playoff games and these youth games i know it is so huge it's so awesome
00:32welcome back to up in the blue sea it's your favorite rangers podcast from the new york post
00:38it's molly walker and former ranger brian boyle your hosts as always it's been weeks i was in milan
00:46i saw two usa hockey two usa hockey gold medals oh baby my body clock is still all over the
00:58place but
00:59it is good to be back in the us of a i will say that my very first meal on
01:04american soil was mickey
01:06donald's it was fabulous what'd you get oh i'm a nuggets girl 10 piece chicken nugget meal
01:13medium fry medium coke no back in my heyday back in my heyday it's a number one and then you
01:22get a
01:22little six piece cider a little six piece he looks six nuggets is just like way too little for me
01:28i
01:28need but if you're 10 or 20 yeah if you muck a big mac first you know fair fair fair
01:36fair fair um
01:38um no good friday how was your olympic break where did you watch the gold medal games game games um
01:45yeah i was in my igloo here we got like a thousand feet of snow yeah i was happy to
01:52miss out on that
01:53it was school vacation week you don't even know you don't even know no i don't you don't even know
01:59you
01:59can't open a door to your house it's 60 mile an hour winds it's dumping snow and the kids
02:06are like the kids it's like they were on drugs they just they have to go outside i'm like i
02:12don't
02:12know what to tell you you don't make the rules yeah like i think i will get arrested
02:18or department of child safety will come here and pick you away from take you away from me
02:22if i let you go outside right now it was it was but it was listen let me tell you
02:28on the sunday
02:30um the women's finale was crazy but on on this like megan keller eagle caca
02:36love it it was so cool it was so awesome and my daughter then because we played a lot of
02:42mini
02:42sticks we tossed her in the net just so she'd be involved and now she wants to be goalie
02:47and i'm like all right like you're gonna be nine we got a long way to go goalie gear like
02:52what okay
02:53but anyways they inspired and then you know my son was at a sleepover actually because it had
02:59calmed down a little bit and there was like five of his teammates there so i got videos of them
03:04watching no i was kind of choked i wasn't there but then i had the rest of my kids in
03:09here
03:11and when jack you scored i screamed so loud that my kids were a little panicked at first and then
03:19the roof blew off my house and later in the day we went to the rinks i went to three
03:24rinks that day
03:26and at every rink everyone was talking about it everyone was cheering everyone was doing different
03:30things and it was like the coolest thing and then all the videos from other rinks playing
03:36stops and playoff games and these youth games it is so huge it's so awesome for just kids that
03:44have big dreams just to keep dreaming i was i'm like i'm so psyched i'm still so psyched
03:49i like i don't care what happens the rest of the year with my rinkages
03:54kind of know where that's going yeah thanks to troch and jt thanking them
04:00other guys i'm like you don't even you probably don't even realize it i don't think i realized
04:04what you just did for these kids it's so awesome and for yourselves congrats listen i'm psyched
04:09yeah it was it was it was epic i mean starting with the women's team i mean i had never
04:16seen
04:17such a dominant hockey team in my entire career i mean they were head and shoulders above every single
04:26team that came their way it wasn't even a competition until that gold medal game um and then
04:34it was crazy because they they were it looked like a completely different team compared to what we
04:39had seen for every single other game i mean they were nervous they were disconnected yeah and it was
04:45canada they canada was they had a a game plan and they executed it tenfold and usa was just all
04:53over
04:54the place and it was kind of like oh my god like how how am i going to write about
04:58this you know they
04:58were they they were the the team to beat the entire tournament but then and then for hillary knight
05:05of all players to be the one to send in that game time goal it was it was poetic it
05:12just does not
05:14you can't write it any better than that honestly you really really can and then for three on three and
05:19what a nasty nasty move by miss megan keller this is straight up dangle itis yeah it's like put them
05:30in a blender just whoop and oh but credit to canada like marie fleet pullin comes back in yeah she's
05:41just nails like yeah they're so good and they're so physical now and i just love the game it's just
05:48it's i
05:48know all the all the kids watching i'm like watch these kids watch these players they are so good
05:55they're so detail-oriented they're so skilled and the ones that win are and you looked at it and you
06:02look at the usa you look at the usa team accepting roles being the absolute very best at whatever you're
06:08asked to do 18 for 18 on the penalty kill for your boys um yeah just one only one team
06:18wins right so when you go back what could we have done different you know we put the friggin canadian
06:22media in a frenzy they don't know how to behave a lot of them not they some of them
06:29and the some of them are very loud and obnoxious and obviously how media of social media works now
06:34those are the ones that get correct up and and most of them are fine but there are a few
06:40that should be
06:40ashamed at how they reacted to because it's not like it's not like last year canada blew us out of
06:49the water right you know that game i thought probably could have gone the us's way this game yeah i
06:54mean
06:55connor hellebook's part of the team and he was ridiculous ridiculous i think that the best thing the best
07:05thing that came out of the tournament too for me personally was you know obviously the narrative
07:10going into this is it's you know usa canada guaranteed gold medal you know like that's
07:15and yeah like i'm sorry did you all see usa and canada both have to take ot wins to get
07:22to where they
07:23got to you know like i don't think that people expected it to be i mean slovakia was the team
07:29of
07:29the tournament slavkovsky or slav goldsky as faravari called him yeah i mean what what an awesome
07:38breakthrough for him and just like becoming a big name in this league now off of this tournament i
07:44mean he he was such the whole team slovakia was so much fun to watch um i i just i
07:51loved that the
07:52competition was was well us who have been around like who are close to the game knew it would be
07:59but
07:59i think people that you know were expecting it to be runaway you know routes to the gold medal
08:06game for canada and u.s were were pleasantly surprised that it took a little bit more
08:11to get to that point it wasn't yeah it wasn't just like uh run through both brackets and then you
08:17meet no not at all mika mika mika magic at the end of the game i'm like what the hell
08:23no mika
08:23not now he tried real hard to rain on their parade real hard i give the swedes a lot of
08:29credit because their coach was drunk he was drinking i made too much chianti over there in
08:33italy i know yeah put the amaretto down fella you don't know what you're doing playing forsberg one
08:38shift in the first game and taking out yes for bratt yeah bench him there was and then the third
08:45he plays them every other shift i'm like yeah what are you yeah there was a lot of very questionable
08:51coaching decisions on sweden's part but i and i mean it definitely played a factor into it played
08:57a factor into sweden probably being the most disappointing team in the entire tournament i
09:02think i mean they were able to eat yeah i know almost very close but uh through those games it
09:10just
09:11yeah we definitely expected sweden to be a lot a lot better than they than they actually were but um
09:17still made for such yeah that and the emotion that came out of me to manage out on that game
09:23time goal was it was awesome to see really really awesome to see it's awesome to see because he's had
09:31a great year he's a pleasure to talk to you know i'm really i was a huge fan of him
09:37for a long time but
09:37now just getting to speak with him a little bit more i'd like it's awesome because us ended up winning
09:43nicky of course when he was just waving off the bench like i got it i got it i'm not
09:48i'm good i'm
09:49good and then he scores i'm like yeah yeah let me tell you speaking of quinn hughes i mean
09:56getting to watch him up close every single game stupid it's it's ridiculous like he
10:06he he is unbelievable just his puck moving abilities and the way that he can just hold
10:13on to the puck for shifts at a time it feels like it's it's like a cheat code truly like
10:19especially
10:19in a three-on-three overtime like that i mean to have a guy who can hold on to the
10:23puck like that
10:25i mean they were they were really missing him at four nations like if if he was if he was
10:30on that
10:31four nations team it could have been a little bit different it definitely could have that that
10:35final game um and it was great to see the hughes brothers kind of share that spotlight together i mean
10:43you guys should have heard quinn hughes fielding questions about his brother after the gold medal i mean
10:49he he went to bat for him he was all he did was defend him and and how hard he's
10:56worked to get
10:57to get back to where he's at all the injuries he's gone through he's throwing reporters under
11:02the bus saying they don't know what they're talking about you don't know what it's like to rehab back
11:06to back injuries like this which is also fair that's a nightmare it's a nightmare yeah i'm sure
11:14i can only imagine um and for jack hughes i mean i think next to adam fox jack hughes got
11:21the most
11:21criticism coming out of that four nations tournament he was the one that looked like he didn't belong on that
11:27team um of the whole four group i think and he he had a chip on his shoulder coming into
11:33this tournament
11:33you could see it on the ice he he was a huge part of this team and it's funny because
11:39you know when
11:40you talk about how differently the us and canada approached the tournaments the only premeditated
11:49lineup change that mike sullivan made the entire tournament was moving jack hughes up from the fourth
11:55line to the third line because jack quite literally gave him no choice you know like he was he was
12:00so
12:01effective and he just needed to be with better players and you know more offensive roles and and
12:06it worked it was it was key for them for sure um such a hard job because they're all phenomenal
12:13yeah like
12:14taking out it's like the one thing is like there's phenomenal forwards
12:20and i think top to bottom the depth up front the high end depth it's canada and people want to
12:27disagree that's fine but no it was true 100 like macklin celerini is oh my god in that conversation
12:34now he's in that conversation now he's a top five player oh yeah 100 and then you have mcdavid mckinnon
12:40and sid going down hurts and i wish like oh it like broke my heart that sid couldn't yeah i
12:46was
12:46shocked i'm like he's playing he's so selfless i'm like it makes sense he's so selfless oh he's
12:52shooting it up trying to get it right yeah it's like i can't i can't go no and him of
12:57all people
12:58would not sacrifice just to be on that bench like that was the least surprising thing i think
13:04that he would sacrifice classiest dude ever yeah and i just was like i couldn't brock nelson's
13:12a stud yeah he's such a stud i hated playing third generation olympic i mean like he's royalty he
13:19looks like one of the characters in the movie miracle from 2004 it's not him because he's too
13:24he's too young but i'm like that's the guy that i played against on the island for so long no
13:29he's
13:30just a stud defense for us we're doing it right on the back end right now and got a couple
13:40more
13:40coming too i mean it's it's interesting yeah i'm just so psyched you got to be there that's awesome
13:47i wish i could have been there but it was also really cool just to be around the rinks and
13:50seeing
13:51these kids yeah it started to really kind of crescendo up and it's what it's all about i just
13:57loved the game so much yeah no i think the best one of the coolest parts for me was
14:03just walking into the arena every day and seeing the different crowds of fans that were coming in
14:09from all over the world just oh yeah like just on the shuttle bus going there it was you know
14:15where i'm standing next to a bunch of guys with a switzerland uh flag as the cape with horns coming
14:23out of their head you know like just everyone dressing up and um it was really awesome to see
14:29so many people travel from all over the world just to support you know their their country in the in
14:35the hockey tournament um it was awesome to see you know even just the teams that didn't have full
14:43teams of nhlers you know how they love it was for them yeah how could you not i mean but
14:50being at world
14:51championships even these these like they're they're crazy they love it they're these national teams how
14:58they all like it's i wish we could i don't know there's just i guess maybe we're i'm not gonna
15:05say
15:05oversaturated with sports and football's king and everybody has their sports that they like to watch
15:12and people watch and i think i think it's great that we have all that here because i encourage all
15:16the
15:17kids to play all these different sports but like you go to you know europe for any event if they're
15:24passionate it's you hear a lot about the soccer obviously but yeah of course any anything any
15:29played in different countries over there and the fans are nuts nuts oh yeah no this is unbelievable
15:36you should have seen what some of these people were wearing like the afros with the different colors for
15:42their country like i have a i have a video of some guy for some bunch of guys from germany
15:47were just
15:48literally wearing like underwear and fro and afros that were like black yellow and red and i'm like
15:56sitting there filming them and he's like waving at me obviously filming him um but it was yeah what a
16:05what a cool community just to see for each each fan base of each country like all the different um
16:13the cheers and the chants and i have such funny videos that we're then we'll never see the light of
16:19day because the isa um yeah great great job great job growing the game everybody great food great food
16:27thanks thanks thanks for for starving me for two weeks um at least the arena was uh playable um but
16:37finished the the food on the other hand not as edible as us folks who were spending 14 hour days
16:46there would have liked but you know we uh we made do we made do um but yeah it was
16:54it was really just
16:56what a special thing to be a part of um an absolute grind 14 hour days every day i got
17:02like three
17:03hours of sleep every night i was going to bed at 3 30 every night yeah it was it was
17:09a lot uh for sure
17:10but i mean so many different storylines every every day there was something new to write about it was so
17:18easy truly it felt like the brain power of the work was non-existing because it just was so easy
17:24to write
17:25about all these unbelievable i mean dylan larkin finally winning something connor halibut exercising
17:31the playoff demons you know like there is just so many different routes that you can go to and they
17:37all have their own individual stories and now we've got a major press tour and i mean quinn hughes is
17:43going
17:43on fnl and it's a night show and yeah so it's so great for the game so great for the
17:50nhl um and yeah i mean
17:53we'll be seeing that jack hughes chipped smile with the gold medal in his mouth for for years to come
18:02yeah seriously or even that uh uh stick save from hellebuck should be on the stamp too
18:08my god let me tell you every time i spoke to connor hellebuck i was like damn like this guy's
18:16here to you
18:17know like he was so unfazed by everything every question every shot uh i loved the quote from him
18:25afterward he was talking about how it felt like everything he did that day leading up to the gold
18:29medal game was right he every step he took felt right every everything he did just felt right and
18:35that's honestly what it felt like talking to him like he he fielded question after question with such
18:41ease and he he just was i'm there to win a gold medal you know and he did and he
18:47was so big in
18:48that game um yeah for for a guy like that coming from his playoff history i mean you can imagine
18:55how
18:56easy it would have been to to give into that but he he didn't he didn't flinch once honestly that
19:02entire
19:03except for that camel cargill which that that was the only kind of goal that was going to beat him
19:07that was the best that was one of the best shots i know that was the only way that was
19:12the only way
19:12they were beating him that that's the thing like he was like there was one save that it went right
19:18into his chest but the the way that he just didn't move like there was no reaction to it whatsoever
19:26it
19:26just bounced off his chest and he was just still eyes you know like oh my god it was that's
19:32the zone
19:33that's what you call the zone oh yeah he was i think he was in it from the moment that
19:37he landed
19:38in milan truly like he he really impressed me um off the ice and on and on the ice it
19:46was
19:47what an unbelievable time yeah i got a bunch of pins yeah i know a bunch of people were asking
19:55to see my pins i got one here i got the nhl one right here i traded for that one
20:01so that's like the
20:02thing everybody trades for their pins a bunch of people like carry them and stuff i got this one
20:09from my dear friend bruce back over at nbc yeah all right he's at his 12th olympics so he's lucky
20:16enough to get his face on a pin he gets his own pin hey brucey he gets his own pin
20:21all right we got
20:22the milan one there you go the team usa one my mom got this one for me nice um and
20:29then bruce also
20:30gave me his paris one which is like his little caricature on it um we got this little coffee
20:38which is perfect because i drank coffee like it was water in milan without milk which because they
20:45would run out of milk for periods of time at the arena like you couldn't find milk at all in
20:50the entire
20:52oh cows in the totally no no milk whatsoever i know this is maybe controversial that i got the
20:59canada one oh why it made the game great like listen if it's not us canada it's still great but
21:06it's better i know here's the women's hockey one i got that from dave fisher the pr guy for team
21:13usa
21:14and then i paid 90 bucks for this one to get into the milan like club thing where they had
21:21all of the gold medals from every single year on display which was really cool i took a picture of
21:29the 1981 obviously where does uh the 2026 gold medal rank amongst the style no look they're a little
21:37you know it's a little modern definitely not as uh cool as the 1981s with the uh olympic torch uh
21:46engraved in it and every single one they also say i feel like every year the last couple olympics
21:52people's medals are breaking now because they're so what yeah oh my god you haven't seen that yeah like
22:00every single person like either like they get chipped or the uh thing falls off the actual
22:08you know thing you put around your neck oh yeah i have a bronze from 2021 worlds that my two
22:14-year-old
22:14now carries everywhere and if that thing hasn't broke i don't know how these things are breaking yeah i
22:20know you would think but uh cheap ioc stop being cheap come on ioc give us the right to put
22:29some
22:31seriously grow the sports i've got a video of the us girls celebrating that would have gone like
22:37triple platinum viral because apparently the broadcast didn't even catch them celebrating and
22:42i have like a perfect bird's eye view of them all coming together and just going bananas and i couldn't
22:50put it anywhere you got to send it to someone that sends it to someone that gets you know who
22:57i sent
22:57it to um our like subtext line that we have uh for our post sports plus subscribers subtext everybody
23:05should sign up i'll text it a lineup and news every day but i sent uh videos of the celebratory
23:13stuff i said don't tell the ioc i'm putting i'm putting my credential at risk for you guys
23:23once in a lifetime maybe if you go well you can go back now oh you have to go back
23:28in four years
23:29oh yeah we've already uh we've already casually dropped the 2028 world cup of hockey in
23:342030 and the french alps we'll be we'll be trying to go there for sure oh no i heard that
23:40place is
23:40boring the french alps yeah it wouldn't be fun at all yeah i mean what a time yeah no seriously
23:51it's
23:52it's very exciting that we're going to be able to have this um every two years now so it's very
23:59important i think and i think it's going to be huge for the game so i mean we've already seen
24:05the
24:05kind of you know discourse and just you know topics of conversation that are just dominating
24:11headlines everywhere both political and sport so the politics more eyes more eyes on the game
24:18more eyes the better let's keep it on the game everybody with their
24:24it's impossible it's impossible all right well as much as i would love to keep talking about
24:33this and i probably could for another two hours um we could segue into some rangers hockey but before
24:40we do that we do want to give a shout out to one of our beloved former rangers um who
24:46has given some
24:46tough news ron dugay our former podcast host was diagnosed with stage four cancer um just horrible
24:55news obviously i mean i've been in touch with with ron uh since he had surgery a bit ago um
25:02he's in
25:03phenomenal spirits because he always is um and we just want to know that uh want him to know that
25:10we're
25:10thinking of him and and pulling for him and um we're gonna put a link to his gofundme page in
25:17the
25:17description of the podcast so please if you're listening if you enjoyed listening to ron while
25:22he was on the podcast um please do consider donating to help out with those costs so we love him
25:29and we're
25:30wishing him all the best moving forward yeah ronnie's the best hey you know what interesting about him
25:36too like he was so he was so interested in health and wellness too when we play some of these
25:42alumni
25:42games together and he was always a curious guy which i thought was cool you know he's obviously
25:49we don't want to go too long but like he he was he was such an interesting guy when he
25:53played the
25:54stories that he had but the amount of questions he asked really impressed me with all the young guys
26:00that would come in and these alumni games every year there's a couple more
26:04and he was just curious i just i really admired that about him and about like what it's like
26:09nowadays or just about it yeah it could be about anything oh yeah you know he was asking me about
26:14my diet and different things you do training and then i'm like i don't know you know i just like
26:18stopped eating breakfast because i don't burn as many calories brian's like yeah my big mac
26:25i said back in the day back in the heyday
26:29it's okay you don't have to hide it you're getting over this break i had one over this break no
26:34it's
26:35hell yeah maybe two or three a year i'd have there you go yeah treat yourself yeah treat yourself
26:41treat yourself um all right i hate to i hate to turn the conversation truly
26:49i really don't want to yeah let's get through it let's just get through it yeah all right all right
26:56all right latest loss for the new york rangers oh great coming out of the break
27:01three two and overtime to the flyers that made it five in a row dating back before the olympic break
27:08and the rangers yeah i know i know how about wait i'm not done and the rangers have not won
27:15in regulation at home since before thanksgiving oh man so um i'll be honest i wasn't watching last
27:23night i was still trying to get on milan time not off of milan time i should say um so
27:29brian just
27:30what what stood out to you about last night's loss well you know this is where they're at um
27:38the state of the rangers right so i did a show at at mlb nhl network but it was for
27:45amazon prime
27:45canada coast to coast there's eight games on and we might have had three highlights of the ranger flyer
27:51game there were a lot of and a lot of these are canadian driven games so we had a lot
27:54of that with
27:55more playoff implications as well so we had more of that right and and the new york rangers right now
28:00are not like at the forefront of no what's going on around the league uh in terms of on ice
28:06play
28:06because of where they're at as a team uh sam carr fighting and scoring although the goal
28:15goal's a goal a little weird one yeah he kind of gets one off the bar and rips it and
28:20you know irson probably didn't love it it's just you know they're sort of playing out the string and you
28:26know mike sullivan's not coaching that way i think the guys that just got back it's hard to ask a
28:31ton
28:31from them the time change and the just the dopamine drop that yeah comes with just the magnitude of
28:39what they just accomplished to yeah where they're at now but what a turnaround yeah you look at a guy
28:44like carrick there's value there oh yeah i want them to keep them but there's value there someone's
28:51going to offer something for him and um you want to see you know a strong finish from fox and
28:59shesterkin
29:00we'll see how that all plays out and now we're looking at kids we're looking at maybe what could
29:05be the future giving them opportunities is it the greatest situation for them to succeed who knows i don't
29:13really subscribe to that i subscribe to if you get to put on an nhl jersey and go play
29:21show what you can do and earn your ice the nhl should was has been and should still be a
29:28meritocracy
29:29and eventually it is but they're going to get some time to play uh which you know they've been
29:34bossing and grinding and in the jungle for a while so give them a shot see what happens
29:40and you know hopefully there's some storylines that we can kind of latch on to and that are
29:45positive yeah hopefully tough one last night four on three and then yeah those guys are gassed
29:52who obviously spent three weeks training obviously getting back in shape because he looked pretty good
29:59um yeah that's the loss of the flyers at home they can't win at home it sucks yeah yeah and
30:08i i think
30:08you know it's kind of at the point in the rangers season where it's kind of hard to dissect
30:16losses and games in general just because it doesn't it doesn't mean anything at this point it really
30:22doesn't and the attention and the focus is on what chris jury is is able to accomplish over the next
30:30however many days up until yeah march six trade deadline um and kind of on that note you know when
30:41you're listening to adam fox talk after the game and it's obviously the first time that anybody's talked
30:47to him since the letter came out and he was naturally asked about his commitment level to
30:52you know staying with the rangers right now and working through what is going to be a ritual rebuild
30:58whatever you want to call it and his answer wasn't exactly the most inspirational for for confidence and
31:04and his mindset of where he's at but i'll read you the the quote um if if you guys didn't
31:11hear it um
31:12he said i mean i'm just trying to focus on this year right now and play each game that's really
31:18all
31:18i can do right now could control is i was just trying to work to get back and help the
31:24team finish
31:25strong so i think that's where my head's at i think that's a conversation when we're done playing games
31:32so i mean i think i would like to preface it obviously i wasn't there when he said it
31:38i watched the video and i think that i i'm going to write about it today too and i kind
31:45of want to
31:47make people pay attention to the circumstances of him saying these this i guess i mean you made this
31:53point before we yeah it was really good i hadn't thought of it yeah he yeah he look this was
32:00his first
32:01game back after a really long time he's been out for longer than he's ever been in his career this
32:07has
32:08been the worst string of injuries for him um first game back he just had a front row seat to
32:15watching his teammates get honored for a gold medal that he wasn't a part of that he thought he might
32:22have been a part of they just lost in overtime i can only imagine what the emotions and how tense
32:32he was
32:33in that moment all all that funneling into one moment coming out out of that game so i think that
32:40his response you know you're in a vulnerable position at that point and i do think that his response was
32:48indicative of of his inner thoughts for sure and i don't think that it's not nothing and not something
32:55to you know focus on because i do think that it was interesting that he said that because the alternative
33:00would
33:00be to definitively say i want to be here and i want to be a part of this going forward
33:06and he very
33:06clearly did not say that um and neither did you gorgeous jerkin apparently um but i think that
33:15you got to take the whole situation as it was and take all that into consideration i think that
33:22conversations will need to be had at the end of the season for sure because one of the number one
33:28things on chris jury's list to do i think is is making this a place that players want to play
33:32again i you're you're always going to have new york you know that will always be an appeal and
33:38that will never you know that will always bring players in i think but now you got to look at
33:45the
33:45guys who are in the room who you want to stay here and build around but you also want them
33:50to want to be
33:51here too um and right now it's kind of hard to say that like you know their circumstances and and
33:59the uh
34:00trajectory that they're on right now it's not looking that great so i think there's going to
34:06have to be conversations to be had but i'm curious what you thought when you heard about those comments
34:13uh i thought i was interesting he was to an extent honest like it's very easy like no i love
34:19it here
34:19and you're just lost i want to be here and then nothing else he thought about it he gave you
34:25an
34:25answer that yeah uh maybe he has been thinking about for a little while because although he hasn't
34:30been on the ice playing you know that's he's been around um it's
34:38it's interesting and understandable not not not quite a ringing endorsement right no and
34:44you know i think if you're a player in an organization there's things that you might want
34:49done differently no matter what the situation is it could be the best situation and there's 23 guys on
34:57a roster there's probably 23 different things guys can nitpick winning cures all yeah so
35:07they put a team together that wins games guys are going to want to come to new york and play
35:10i don't know why most of the team lives outside of the city but maybe the city is different than
35:16when i played in it and there's they're all married most of them are married that's why we
35:21we had you know whatever different different different times i guess i mean it's just so great
35:28living and playing in new york city but whatever it's fine i think uh winning cures all that's it
35:35i mean you want to win and it's frustrating going to the conference finals a couple times and
35:42getting set that close and then seeing guys getting traded off and then looking at the
35:47runway of how far is this runway where we're kind of back in the mix and that's what the conversations
35:53are but i mean that's a lot of term and money if you're talking gavrikov igor and fox trying to
36:02move
36:02out um i think it they play they have conversations throughout the rest of the season and um eventually
36:12because they need him and he's a huge part yeah he played well up until his injury so hopefully he
36:18finishes strong and they can sort of just reset yeah i mean and he want he you know you also
36:27think
36:27about how you know he moved heaven and earth to be here you know he did uh everything in his
36:33power
36:34to be yeah exactly so you know that's what i'm saying right for us to or for the rangers to
36:43have gone from you know being a place that a player did all that to get there to then
36:54hearing him say pretty non-committal comments about his future you know that's that's a bigger
37:01conversation and i think that is on the tippy top of chris jury's list of things to address because
37:08you know obviously you're going to be retooling but you think about the guys who are probably going
37:14to be staying around or the guys that they probably want to remain like jt miller he's yeah captain like
37:22he's pretty locked in optics wise they literally just can't they just can't get rid of another captain
37:29um and then you look at igor and gavrikov and fox um and it gets down to a point of
37:39you know you want
37:40them to be committed to it too and you want them to want to be here too and right now
37:44there's not
37:44there's not a lot there's not a lot that would me if i if i were a player there's not
37:49a lot that would
37:49make me want to stay but yeah you gotta see it through sometimes it's not always perfect yeah for sure
37:56um but i think that's that's part of the gm's job 100 so i think that is gonna have to
38:03be a topic of
38:04conversation um at the end of this season so yeah that was a very interesting thing to come out of
38:10last night the most interesting thing for sure and it's gonna be those types of topics that dominate
38:16the ranger storylines going forward because who the hell cares that they lost three two to the flyers
38:21in the same in the same fashion that they've lost so many other games you know giving up a goal
38:2539 seconds into the third period yeah things like that i was just like a classic that's classic you
38:33didn't have to be there you know yeah i didn't i could have written it remotely truly
38:40okay all right well um we didn't get to talk about the artemi trade um that much we talked about
38:47it
38:47separately but not not together um we want to put a bow on that because the trade deadlines in a
38:54week
38:54or yeah whenever this airs six seven days yeah we'll talk about the speculation regarding one
39:01vince trochik as well we get some clarity on that lots of teams would want him his number is really
39:07nice he's got some term we can talk about red man who's like i'm back in the same spot from
39:133 000
39:14miles away because la looks like a dumpster fire now um how funny was the uh the rolex exchange that
39:21was great that was fantastic hopefully more great things happen for the guy but if that's the best
39:26thing that happened for him through this trade this year that's that's that he got it got his number
39:30got 72 that's i was just cracking that was so that was that was so artemi um but yeah i
39:38mean
39:38obviously he was traded to la in exchange for a liam greentree a conditional 2026 third round pick if
39:44the kings uh reach the first round i believe in a conditional 2028 fourth round pick um if they
39:51reach two playoff rounds not looking great right no no it's not by evidence
40:01uh the rangers uh the rangers the rangers had to retain 50 percent of that of his remaining salary
40:10um and yeah i mean like the whole the whole way it unfolded obviously it was it was basically like
40:18a mini july first for for isemi panarin which was kind of funny yeah obviously his his agent was given
40:26permission to to negotiate um extensions which he did with la immediately after two years 22 million
40:34and it sounds like he left money yeah left a lot of money on the table elsewhere seattle
40:41upwards of 20 million on the table yeah yeah so you know clearly it wasn't a highest bidder type
40:48situation and you know artemi is a guy who came from absolutely nothing like he's probably has more
40:55money that he knows what to do with but i mean he i'll have some i can take some i'll
41:01take a check
41:08um but you know he talked about it you know being a feeling and you know there were obviously so
41:14many teams that were involved and who his agent were speaking to i think that he wanted to go to
41:19florida um if it were possible but it it just wasn't really feasible for them you know cap wise
41:27they weren't able to you know make that happen and and do a uh extension which was very clearly um
41:34a major sticking point for artemi understandably because he's just i know he's like the type of guy
41:39that like he you know he only wanted to go through all of this once yeah he didn't want to
41:44he did not
41:45want to have another situation yeah yeah at all like that's very much so like him so it makes sense
41:52yeah it makes sense why he why he wanted that to all be done in one shot um but yeah
41:59i mean it's tough
42:01it's a tough loss for the rangers um it's fans are bummed some yeah he was some fans favorite ranger
42:08like ever younger fans yeah like they're like and he did everything yeah he was he was worth it
42:15that's what i wrote for my column is it's so rare especially in a city in a market like new
42:21york with
42:21the expectations and the pressure yeah when you're a big name free agent coming in and signing for that
42:28amount of money i mean that is that is something that the fan base will hold over for you for
42:32your
42:33entire time that you're here if you sign any amount of money they don't do what they think
42:39you're doing you're getting yeah exactly so the fact that nobody talked about that contract once
42:46because he felt like he was worth every single penny truly and he was um so it's really i know
42:53we
42:54talked about your your analogy and you got a leaky roof and you got a ferrari sitting in the
42:58in the garage and you got to do all that and i get it i do but it's just really
43:04really difficult
43:05to watch the you know leading score for the last however many years walk out the front door
43:12ferraris are awesome they're awesome yeah but yeah i mean you gotta live in your house
43:20you gotta build a foundation here first no it's it's true um but i i do think that you know
43:27when we look back on this very transformative time for the rangers it's gonna be easy to
43:35pick apart the guys that drury decided to keep and decided to ship off you know like you're gonna look
43:42at these types of things and and wonder if different chess pieces could have been moved
43:47um especially for a guy like him you know that's just that's my biggest thing and you know from a
43:53personal standpoint i mean artemi was one of the best athletes that i've ever covered in my entire
43:59my entire time covering the rangers covering new york sports um that guy would give the shirt off of
44:06his back for anybody in his orbit um and that is i say that with my whole chest he is
44:13he really is one
44:15of a kind and from a media standpoint we will we will miss we will miss having that for sure
44:21he was
44:22always a fun quote and uh he was the worst guy to talk to when the team was doing well
44:27because he would
44:28just be cracking jokes and trying to make people laugh and we're trying to get i i so many times
44:34i
44:34walked away from him just being like you're not helping me like oh yeah he is he's one of the
44:42lightest he just you know really alleviates a lot of the the pressure and and darkness in any room
44:49truly and i know a lot of the guys in that room feel that about him too so it's tough
44:54it's tough and
44:55but he should go down as one of the best not only one of the best rangers free agent signings
45:00i think
45:01he is one of the best new york free agent signings honestly he deserves to be on that list
45:07that's my hot take hard to argue that you know really hard to argue that it's just
45:14you know and there's been a lot of excitement around free agent signings in new york sports it
45:19just simply did not work out and he had that he had that special chip in him where he just
45:25didn't
45:25care he was the man he wants the puck he makes the plays and he's the bread man yep in
45:30my short time
45:31being around the team big smile and a handshake when i'd see him always a hello always never met
45:38you before played against yeah that's cool i mean little things can be big things i appreciate it and
45:45i still enjoy watching him play it doesn't make any sense to me how he does what he does which
45:49i love
45:50about watching guys play yeah he's he's a hell of a player that's for sure wish they got a little
45:56bit more yeah i mean always that you always wish you and like at that point you're handcuffed
46:03too it's because if you look at the way that it unfolded like yeah um obviously there were a bunch
46:08of teams you know in on it and he was weighing a lot of different teams all the different offers
46:14he
46:14said every gm did their best to speak on behalf of their teams so funny that he said it that
46:20way
46:20um but you know he at the end of the day at the 11th hour right before the olympic trade
46:31deadline
46:31freeze he said the only place that i want to go to is la and i think that the rangers
46:38really wanted
46:39to get this done before the olympic break so they could focus on other things and at that point you
46:45know when the guy who's in total control says it's here or nothing you have to make it you know
46:51the lever there's there is no leverage so they you know you can complain about yeah you can complain
46:58about the return all you want but there was quite literally no other route to go so um yeah um
47:09trocek probably the biggest trade piece that drury has now going forward yeah that's where he has the
47:17leverage yeah especially after the olympics i mean there should be a line of people for the way that
47:24trocek played in the olympics i thought that he was i thought that he was great i mean both him
47:29and jt
47:30on that pk they did their jobs to the fullest and like yeah he's still such a good player like
47:38i'm not
47:39mad i'm not mad if they keep him yeah i get any assets i get any different things and he
47:44is the
47:44most valuable one i just think like you get those assets and you start well next year you're looking
47:51for vince trocek exactly that's that's what i was thinking like they were looking you know ryan strom
47:59and panarin were great together but they wanted a trocek type guy in that role and it felt like
48:06they were looking for him and you know when it looked like it wasn't gonna be long term with strom
48:12anymore they were able to face trocek in that in that uh playoff round and see exactly what what he
48:19can do up close and personal like that and i think that they were sold right after that and you
48:25know like
48:26they're gonna yeah you you wonder because they spent so much time trying to get that and now
48:33that now they're shipping it out and i'm not like i'm not the one that can it better be such
48:39a haul
48:40because i just i love vince and i like you know his family's wonderful and they love it here it's
48:44just
48:45yeah i don't know you know we'll see in a week yeah and i mean i i uh i got
48:52to sit down and talk
48:53with him about you know right after the letter and he's you know such an interesting guy in his in
48:59his
49:00career and his story getting to new york like this was the biggest role that he's ever had on any
49:07of
49:07the teams that he's been on being an alternate captain you know being a top six guy and signing
49:15the contract that he did like this was supposed to be the peak of his career so to say and
49:21i asked him
49:22yeah but i also asked him if that like makes what's happened to the team you know hit him a
49:28little bit harder than maybe some of the other guys in that room and he wholeheartedly agreed
49:34um you could tell how much it's weighed on him and you can tell that he's also a little offended
49:40that
49:41his name is out there as well like i think that he's not yeah if he's different ways to look
49:46at it
49:47it's so many teams are like they're out we want him so yeah yeah he does have some trade control
49:54yeah no he does everybody wants he does yeah he's got a trade list yeah and uh the funny thing
50:02about
50:02him i know everybody was talking about this at the olympics during the picture day when he uh
50:08ventured on over into the minnesota wild picture but i had actually heard that it wasn't trochek who went
50:15over there himself it was mr billy garan oh tamp tampering called his soft tampering oh don't
50:24get billy g in trouble he's a hero gold let's go baby no but but in actuality it was it
50:31was mr billy
50:32garan who called trochek over there and he was the one who was making the joke not not trochek so
50:37um i think that there is yeah allegedly soft tampering um
50:46but uh i think that uh uh oh we got a delivery yeah it's been a couple of days since
50:53they've seen
50:53dad oh can i say that again you are so famous now hi you got a maui hook
51:05wait to sleep all right give killian a turn you get to do this every time
51:09killian look at this look at this hair oh what'd you got in your hair oh is that a is
51:17that
51:17that's the moana thing that's what's it called killian maui isn't that his name what's that called
51:23maui hook maui hook yes special plowers no haircuts ever all right go see my mom coming
51:34i love you oh we'll just finish you can't talk though bye she's okay you got daddy
51:45see this is what happens when players get traded they gotta leave these kiddos yeah and they gotta
51:50pack up it's part of the game we're not complaining oh it's a lot it's a lot um yeah
52:00gillian's crying now hi hey can i finish i'll be done in two minutes what's on your face
52:06what'd you eat you got a boo-boo on your face how come
52:13what's this though chocolate he's like i have no idea did you have a cookie
52:21hand yeah okay can you please go
52:25that is hot those are hot they're spicy okay go get daddy water okay
52:32tell her we're almost done two minutes she doesn't know what that means i love you baby
52:42um sorry about that nick no you're fine you're fine um
52:48um yeah only other thing left to cover um got a bunch of injured guys back igor's back box is
52:55back
52:55sherry's back edstrom's available didn't play on thursday but he's available
53:02yeah i had i had reported um it was just yeah i mean it seems like it was they were
53:10weighing a bunch
53:11of different options for him and it was pretty uncertain which way it was going to go but i guess
53:17you know right before the break i had asked if you know what hit what it was what his timeline
53:23was
53:23looking like and i was told that after the after the break that he should be back but
53:28yeah so here he is so that's that's good that it that it all went according to plan but
53:32um and then rempy yeah rempy is on ir now had another procedure done on his hand on his thumb
53:42um yeah edstrom's still on ltir so they gotta they gotta activate him before they before they put
53:49him back in but i'm sure they will especially if they're you know leaning toward the youth
53:54at this point in the season so if he plays a couple games plays well don't they they'll get
54:01calls about him yeah giant winger perhaps perhaps i guess i guess we'll wait to see
54:13we're all we're almost there almost at the march 6 deadline i know all right that's a good place
54:19for us to stop um thanks for tuning in that was a really fun episode um give us a thumbs
