00:00One of the other elements of that, you remember the whole Jed Fish thing that was happening with DeMond Williams
00:05and his flirtation with leaving, them not putting him in the portal, him reportedly having a buyout and everything else.
00:11I guess Jed Fish, I heard some sounds, some comments from him about how they didn't put him in the
00:17portal or he didn't really want to get in because he didn't want to leave.
00:21And they're glad he's here and he's part of the program and all this stuff.
00:25And it gets me thinking for a long time, schools like would never want to go after players is just
00:30a tough look for you.
00:32And that's one of your guys. And we've seen that change now with some of these lawsuits happening.
00:37Then if your guy comes back, you fight to get a back and they do stay.
00:42Then you've got this PR mess to kind of clean up in this spin job, which is kind of what
00:47Jed Fish is trying to do and acting like we didn't remember like all this stuff.
00:51And he was talking about some Instagram posts and everything else. But it just seems like there's something crazy going
00:59on.
00:59And I think it might be DeMond Williams return because he was going to go to Oregon.
01:03And once Dante Moore came back, there wasn't a spot and maybe the Big Ten was going to get involved
01:10in everything else.
01:11Then you're just you're left with this PR mess and this nightmare.
01:14There. What I mean, I'm trying to think of like the question, I just see that I'm just trying to
01:21figure out, I mean, is this the reality going forward?
01:24And these coaches, like how long did it take for them to develop this spin to come out here to
01:29kind of get the fans and everybody back on the side of of what was your one of your star
01:33players last year?
01:34I think. And because of the generational differences of players today versus 20 years ago, I'm I'm fairly certain that
01:43the locker room won't be the issue.
01:45You know, like Williams, he's be like, hey, this happened. I'm back. I'm here for this team and players because
01:50of the amount of player movement.
01:52I think players and 19 to 22 year old kids are probably less like that.
01:58It's the fans that's going to be tough and the you know, the coaching that's going to be tough.
02:02Well, you didn't want to be here. Why are you here now?
02:04Now, how do you sell the fans on? Yeah, I wanted to be here all along in a press conference
02:09when we all know when we ask that question, he's lying.
02:12So, you know, maybe less of a deal than it would have been even five years ago.
02:18I remember a time, guys, when we were writing columns at Sporting News just going after Leonard Fournette and Christian
02:25McCaffrey for sitting out of bowl games.
02:27And now I look back at it and I'm like, yeah, that didn't matter that much, did it?
02:31So, you know, one of those things. So especially in McCaffrey's, in McCaffrey's case, he did OK after not playing
02:39in that bowl game.
02:41Absolutely. I mean, do you see this maybe is the PR team working on it as soon as DeMond Williams
02:47like decides to leave, like just in case he decides to come back?
02:50Because it seems like nowadays that's not really too crazy of a thought when when a guy enters the transfer
02:54portal and comes back.
02:55So as a PR team, like, are you just working on just spinning that story right away?
02:59Because that's just that seems like a lot of work that you got to deal with.
03:02Yeah. And especially if he truly doesn't want to be there or, you know, whatever the case may be, that's
03:07going to be a little bit of work there.
03:08I'm sure, you know, the play on the field will dictate that.
03:11And hopefully, again, this is another reason why, whether it's Swarsby or DeMond or the whole thing that happened with
03:18Darian Mensah and Miami and Duke, that I think we need to have like set contracts.
03:22I mean, can you imagine the NFL comp to this would be like, I mean, I'm trying to think like
03:28Joe Burrow using him for an example.
03:30And he's just like, oh, I'm not going to play for the Bengals right now.
03:33And then he then he tries to come back to the Bengals after a botched free agency thing.
03:38I don't see this is why we need the contracts to happen.
03:41You can be a free agent. You can go to wherever you want to do in the NFL and everything
03:46moves on.
03:46I mean, Bobby and I remember Carson Palmer kind of trying to strong arm the Bengals into a trade and
03:53that got messy.
03:54But those situations are few and far in between in the NFL because they're adults signing contracts and living up
03:59to those contracts as we can go.
04:01But of course, they can be cut. That's the big thing there.
04:04Those guys can be cut at any any point.
