In Malegaon, police have registered a case against seven individuals for allegedly offering namaz inside the Electricity Department office of the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC).

The case was filed on February 25, 2026, at the Malegaon Quilla Police Station based on a complaint by Mahendra Raghunath Sawant (43), an MMC employee.

According to police, on February 23, a delegation led by Lukman Kamal, president of the Malegaon Lok Sangharsh Samiti, visited the MMC office to raise concerns over unresolved power supply issues in their ward. The group reportedly waited for several hours to meet officials. As the delay coincided with the Asr (afternoon) prayer time, they offered namaz inside the office premises, stating they did so to avoid missing their scheduled meeting.

Police have booked the individuals under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Maharashtra Police Act, including:

Section 132 (BNS): Use of criminal force against a public servant
Section 189 (BNS): Unlawful assembly
Section 190 (BNS): Joint liability of members of an unlawful assembly
Section 292 (BNS): Public nuisance

A video of the prayer inside the office circulated widely on social media, triggering protests from local BJP leaders and certain Hindu organisations. In response, activists associated with the Sakal Hindu Samaj reportedly recited the Hanuman Chalisa within the MMC premises as a form of protest.

Malegaon Municipal Commissioner Ravindra Jadhav has ordered a formal inquiry into the incident. Police said further investigation is underway.
