00:00:01C'est parti !
00:00:42Welcome to Politics Today.
00:00:44We're speaking with Professor Gerald Loss, Sinclair Fellow of Political Science at Eldergy University.
00:00:50Professor Loss, is America becoming a fascist state?
00:01:00Well, frankly, I think it's preposterous.
00:01:04The idea that the United States could somehow become a dictatorship?
00:01:09That's science fiction.
00:01:17Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that fascism is fiction, or that fascism doesn't flourish all over the world,
00:01:23but this is America.
00:01:33We have a system of checks and balances designed to prevent any one branch of government from exercising an inordinate
00:01:40amount of power.
00:01:46Believe me, this too will pass.
00:01:49America will never be governed by a dictator, or a demagogue, or a king.
00:02:00The America of today is not the Germany of the 1930s.
00:02:04The average American is not going to buy into a philosophy of hatred.
00:02:15We are a nation of immigrants.
00:02:18How is anyone going to convince us to hate ourselves?
00:02:25Our democracy is resilient.
00:02:27We will come through this.
00:02:29And without the civil war, some people are talking about.
00:02:39Look, I understand.
00:02:41People are scared.
00:02:42But I can assure you there's absolutely nothing to worry about.
00:02:46Believe me, it's all much ado about nothing.
00:02:59First up, on Great American News, we have field correspondent Mo Lackey reporting from the Capitol building.
00:03:05Well, Charles, as you can see, immigrants, minorities, socialists, and other dissidents are once again protesting in the streets.
00:03:14These traitors are making it abundantly clear that they have but one objective, to destroy America.
00:03:21Enough.
00:03:22Mom!
00:03:23Off.
00:03:24Don't you want me to be informed?
00:03:26The world is going to hell in a handbasket.
00:03:29There.
00:03:30You're informed.
00:03:31That's censorship.
00:03:32Yes, it is.
00:03:33Now, come on, honey.
00:03:34You've got to go do your homework.
00:03:56Hail the conquering hero.
00:03:59You won.
00:04:00Maria Rodriguez is on a path to citizenship.
00:04:03Oh, 4-1 for the good guys.
00:04:07How was school?
00:04:08The board is trying to ban 1984.
00:04:12Oh, yeah?
00:04:15Actually, it's pretty ironic if you think about it.
00:04:18Scary is what it is.
00:04:20Do you think your law firm could get involved?
00:04:23We do civil rights, not censorship.
00:04:25I know, but aren't the students' civil rights being violated somehow?
00:04:29I mean, they have a right to a complete education, don't they?
00:04:33They do.
00:04:34But a lawsuit won't do it?
00:04:37No.
00:04:39No.
00:04:40It was worth a shot.
00:04:41Don't forget, we got the Dem Club meeting tonight.
00:04:46Right.
00:04:48Right.
00:04:56Hey, kiddo.
00:04:59Mom wouldn't let me watch the news.
00:05:01That's censorship.
00:05:03That's what I said.
00:05:07You took these with your cell phone?
00:05:09Yep.
00:05:15You have a good eye.
00:05:16I know.
00:05:17You also know that when you use a printer, you don't have to let them dry, right?
00:05:20Yeah.
00:05:21But that's how they do it in all the movies.
00:05:24Okay.
00:05:25But the babysitter's gonna be here soon.
00:05:27Your mom and I'll be back in a few hours.
00:05:29What's the Democratic Club?
00:05:31It's a place where lonely leftists rehash the same arguments they've been having for years.
00:05:36So why are you still going?
00:05:38Because your mom needs to feel like she's still the activist she used to be.
00:05:43She's standing right behind me, isn't she?
00:05:56You know, I can't believe you said that.
00:05:58What?
00:05:59The activist she used to be.
00:06:02Come on.
00:06:02You do more for social justice in one class than the Dem Club's done in the last ten years.
00:06:07Oh, come on.
00:06:07You make us sound like a coffee clutch.
00:06:10Okay.
00:06:11Before we get started, let me remind everyone that the coffee's on the back table next to the minutes from
00:06:16last month's meeting.
00:06:18Uh, the September meeting of the Democratic Club is now in session.
00:06:22Uh, the first item on the agenda's gonna be the Christmas fundraiser.
00:06:28Now, I understand that we have some options here.
00:06:30You're not serious.
00:06:32With everything that's going on, you want to talk about a fundraiser?
00:06:35We have a process, Max. You know that.
00:06:37That's okay. Max, what would you like to talk about?
00:06:41Where to begin?
00:06:43The suppression of the free press.
00:06:45State-sanctioned hate crimes.
00:06:48Mass deportations.
00:06:49I've even heard that the government is building detention camps.
00:06:53Have you heard that?
00:06:54Okay. Okay.
00:06:55Okay.
00:06:56Let's start with the camps.
00:06:57There has been questionable construction going on in most states.
00:07:02Also that the government has been making lists.
00:07:06Uh, exactly what kind of lists are we talking about?
00:07:09I'm Chief of Staff for Senator Quick, and I...
00:07:13Would that be State Senator Quick?
00:07:18The point is, if the government were compiling lists, I think I'd know about it.
00:07:24I don't know what to tell you, David.
00:07:26Who's that?
00:07:30The information we have is that, uh...
00:07:32Definitely a government spot.
00:07:33The government is listing names of, uh, progressive academics, journalists, activists,
00:07:42May I say something?
00:07:44I was a professor of European history for 40 years.
00:07:48We all know who you are, Max.
00:07:50I'm simply establishing the fact that I'm qualified to speak with authority on the subject at hand.
00:07:57That guy's really starting to creep out.
00:07:58Believe me when I tell you what is happening today, it's not new.
00:08:00The government is normalizing fascism.
00:08:04It was going a little further each time.
00:08:07The National Socialists did the same thing.
00:08:10Hitler didn't start with Auschwitz.
00:08:12He started by demonizing immigrants, harassing dissidents, and controlling the press.
00:08:17Does any of that sound familiar?
00:08:19No.
00:08:20If you'll permit me to read a key article of our Constitution...
00:08:24Max, I don't think we have time.
00:08:27Oh, my God.
00:08:29What?
00:08:30There's been a bomb in the Capitol building.
00:08:32What?
00:08:34They're claiming it was the protesters.
00:08:36It's the Reichstag fire all over again.
00:08:39You think the government did this?
00:08:41What better excuse to crack down on dissidents?
00:08:43Just because there's a motive doesn't mean that...
00:08:46How are protesters going to get into the Capitol building at 10 o'clock at night?
00:08:49We are not talking about a plane or a van.
00:08:52Somebody had to have security clearance.
00:08:57Due to the latest incident, I think we should call it a night.
00:09:01I move to adjourn.
00:09:03Second.
00:09:05Meeting's adjourned.
00:09:06And I suggest that you all stay home tonight until we find out what the government's going to do about
00:09:11this incident, huh?
00:09:14What was that about?
00:09:29Amy fell asleep editing photos.
00:09:31Oh, don't tell me we have an artist on our hands.
00:09:34God help us.
00:09:38What did you think about what Max was saying tonight?
00:09:40You're asking if I think the government orchestrated the bombing as an excuse to crack down on dissidents?
00:09:45It's a brave new world.
00:09:47For sure.
00:09:48But you know Max, he's always been paranoid.
00:09:50Yeah.
00:09:51Hands in plain view.
00:09:52What the hell?
00:09:53Oh my God.
00:09:53You're under arrest by order of the United States government.
00:09:56I want to see a warrant.
00:09:58Noted.
00:09:59Now move.
00:10:01I said move!
00:10:10Grab the girl.
00:10:30Mommy.
00:10:31I'm scared.
00:10:32I know, honey.
00:10:34Just try to think of it as a game.
00:10:39Nancy.
00:10:40Nancy Washington.
00:10:41Who's there?
00:10:41It's me.
00:10:42It's Max.
00:10:43Max Steiner.
00:10:43Max?
00:10:44What's going on?
00:10:45I don't know.
00:10:47Is that you, Ethan?
00:10:48Yeah.
00:10:49I'm here too.
00:10:50David Gretsch.
00:10:51And Jack Bisbee.
00:10:55There's somebody else here.
00:10:57Who are you?
00:10:58Abi.
00:10:59Abi Dabiri.
00:11:00Dabiri?
00:11:01You're new at the club.
00:11:02I've only been to a few meetings.
00:11:04How come you haven't said anything?
00:11:05I haven't had anything to say.
00:11:07This isn't a coincidence.
00:11:09No.
00:11:09They must be using the damn club's membership list.
00:11:12Okay.
00:11:13But who are they?
00:11:15Where do you think they're taking us?
00:11:17Maybe some kind of detention camp?
00:11:19Let's hope so.
00:11:20What are you talking about?
00:11:22It means it's preferable to the alternative.
00:11:37Everybody out!
00:12:01This is how they do it.
00:12:03Anybody with a dissenting voice.
00:12:05They round you up.
00:12:07Take you to the forest.
00:12:08Make you dig your own grave.
00:12:09And put a bullet in your head.
00:12:10It's enough.
00:12:13Mom, are they gonna hurt us?
00:12:16Just try to be brave, okay?
00:12:21Vault!
00:12:28You can take your hoods off.
00:12:37Oh, thank God.
00:12:40You made it!
00:12:41Will someone tell us what's going on?
00:12:44Are you alright?
00:12:46I'm sorry about all the drama.
00:12:48If this is some kind of joke...
00:12:50Believe me, if there was some other way...
00:12:53Some other way?
00:12:55Do you have any idea what we've just been through?
00:12:57I mean, Jesus Christ, here's another way.
00:12:59How about you just fucking tell people first?
00:13:01People thought we were gonna be killed for fuck's sake.
00:13:04Please.
00:13:05I'm gonna tell you all I know.
00:13:08Last night, the government started arresting dissidents.
00:13:11People who've been signing petitions or going to rallies.
00:13:15Belong to a democratic club?
00:13:18Exactly.
00:13:18What, you mean all across the country?
00:13:20The president used the bombing at the capitol building as an excuse to invoke the War Powers Act.
00:13:25Five minutes later, he declares martial law and the military starts rounding everybody up.
00:13:30Thanks to Martin, we knew it was coming.
00:13:33So you just kidnapped us?
00:13:35Would you rather be in a camp?
00:13:37No, of course not.
00:13:38But you can't keep us here, wherever the hell here is.
00:13:43Now listen, there's armed conflicts happening across the entire country.
00:13:48You're a wanted man.
00:13:50You wanna go? Go.
00:13:52In fact, Martin's heading back to the fighting.
00:13:54He'll take you with him, sure.
00:13:56And all of you, whoever wants to leave, leave!
00:14:02I mean, be my guest.
00:14:03My guest.
00:14:04I mean, be my guest.
00:14:05I mean, be my guest.
00:14:12I mean, be my guest.
00:14:39So what do you think?
00:14:42It's definitely different.
00:14:49Is it safe?
00:14:50As long as they don't find out we're here.
00:14:52Who owns it?
00:14:53Someone from the Resistance.
00:14:55Free America they call themselves.
00:14:57Or I guess I should say what we call ourselves.
00:15:00Free America.
00:15:02Smart branding at least.
00:15:05Is there any electricity?
00:15:06Yeah.
00:15:07We have a generator in the basement.
00:15:09Okay everyone.
00:15:11Coffee will be ready in about five minutes.
00:15:14I'll give you a hand Sandy.
00:15:18No it really is a Dem Club meeting.
00:15:22How are you feeling?
00:15:23Oh.
00:15:25Much better.
00:15:26Thank you.
00:15:27Do you mind if I check your pulse?
00:15:29You're a doctor.
00:15:31Neurosurgeon.
00:15:32Although right now I'd rather be a cardiologist.
00:15:41Can I ask you a question?
00:15:43Shoot.
00:15:44How did you pull this off?
00:15:46You mean how did we get you all out?
00:15:48Yeah.
00:15:48That and this place.
00:15:50It was mostly Martin.
00:15:52Free America was organizing on the dark web for months.
00:15:55A few weeks ago Martin came to me and said that all of us were on an arrest list and
00:16:00he was assigned to get us to a safe house.
00:16:02Sounded crazy but for some reason I believed him.
00:16:08Are there other safe houses?
00:16:10All over the country.
00:16:12Speaking of all over the country, where exactly are we?
00:16:15I don't know.
00:16:17What does that mean?
00:16:18Well Sandy and I got here exactly the same way you did.
00:16:21Unless we know the better.
00:16:23You mean if we're caught.
00:16:25Still you could have given us some warning.
00:16:27No I couldn't.
00:16:29The arrest had to look legit.
00:16:32You know Martin risked everything to bring us all here.
00:16:36Oh, you doing okay Bubba?
00:16:39I'm perplexed.
00:16:41Join the club kid.
00:16:45Listen.
00:16:46I'm going to explain everything to you later.
00:16:49Okay?
00:16:51You want to go grab a couple of cookies from the kitchen?
00:16:53Hey, no TV but I found a radio.
00:16:59Raids continued throughout the night.
00:17:01Thousands of suspected terrorists have been taken into custody
00:17:04prompting the military to declare
00:17:06Operation Patriot an unqualified success.
00:17:10So it's over.
00:17:13That's state media.
00:17:15See if you can get a Canadian station.
00:17:16How much of the military is on our side?
00:17:19Well according to Martin,
00:17:20it's not just guerrilla raids.
00:17:22We're talking full blown civil war.
00:17:25Here we go.
00:17:26Here's more from Tom Davis with updates from the U.S.
00:17:29Fierce fighting continues in all major cities
00:17:32throughout the United States.
00:17:33Preliminary reports suggest that casualties
00:17:35are already in the thousands.
00:17:38Jesus.
00:17:38It would seem that the Free America forces
00:17:40are well organized, well equipped,
00:17:42and prepared for a prolonged conflict.
00:17:49You deserve so much your hand.
00:17:51You're a kind of a good one.
00:17:53Oh, I really don't find that.
00:17:56How long can we stay here?
00:17:58As long as we need to.
00:18:00Or until the food runs out.
00:18:03Well, that shouldn't be a problem.
00:18:05Martin will be back in a month to resupply.
00:18:09No, the only concern is to make sure
00:18:12that nobody knows we're here.
00:18:14Anybody have a cell phone?
00:18:22Good.
00:18:23There's one GPS signal, and we're finished.
00:18:26I have a question.
00:18:28Okay.
00:18:30Who put you in charge?
00:18:32Mark risked his life to save ours.
00:18:34I'm not questioning that.
00:18:36And believe me, I'm grateful.
00:18:39But just because Mark is the president
00:18:41of a Democratic club doesn't mean
00:18:43he's the right leader in this situation.
00:18:45But you are.
00:18:47I didn't say that.
00:18:48No, but you were thinking it.
00:18:51David's right.
00:18:53We haven't had a vote.
00:18:58I make a motion that Mark leads us.
00:19:01I second the motion.
00:19:03Any discussion?
00:19:05Hearing none.
00:19:06All in favor?
00:19:08Aye.
00:19:08Aye.
00:19:09Aye.
00:19:16Any opposed?
00:19:18Motion carried.
00:19:20Okay.
00:19:22Well, let's get to work.
00:19:29A Muslim and a Jew putting up Christmas lights.
00:19:34That's funny.
00:19:35I didn't even think about that.
00:19:36You're a journalist.
00:19:38You know what people are?
00:19:40Look, all I'm saying is that this whole Shangri-La thing,
00:19:43eventually it's going to come down to survival of the fittest.
00:19:48Are you listening to me?
00:19:50No.
00:19:56Rice.
00:19:57On top.
00:19:59Jawohl.
00:20:05Need a hand?
00:20:08We've got it.
00:20:09Thanks.
00:20:10Sit yourselves.
00:20:16We're putting the food in that corner and everything else over there.
00:20:19By we, you mean...
00:20:21You.
00:20:22Right.
00:20:23Food.
00:20:27Not food.
00:20:30So what are we going to do for clothes?
00:20:31I'm partial to Armani.
00:20:34Mark went to a thrift store.
00:20:35You can't be serious.
00:20:40Not food.
00:20:45MREs.
00:20:46Yum.
00:20:48You said you'd explain everything.
00:20:51I did, didn't I?
00:20:54Did you and Daddy do something wrong?
00:20:56No.
00:20:57Of course not, honey.
00:20:59Then why are we here?
00:21:05Well, your dad and I want the world to be a better place.
00:21:09And this is it?
00:21:12No.
00:21:13Not exactly.
00:21:28What are you doing?
00:21:30Martin says there was a safe room behind the display in the basement where we could all hide.
00:21:35And you think this is it?
00:21:37Yeah, I do.
00:21:41I think so.
00:21:43Move.
00:21:49I was about to do that.
00:22:15What are you doing?
00:22:16Taking pictures.
00:22:18Is the GPS on?
00:22:19No.
00:22:22Thank God.
00:22:23I don't want strangers to know where I am.
00:22:27Me either.
00:22:29So can I keep it?
00:22:31I don't think that's a good idea, kiddo.
00:22:34But Dad, we're stuck out here.
00:22:36My art is my only means of personal expression.
00:22:40I'm serious.
00:22:42I can see that.
00:22:46All right.
00:22:47Tell you what.
00:22:48If you absolutely promise not to tell anyone.
00:22:50I promise.
00:22:53I'm serious.
00:22:55So am I.
00:22:59Okay.
00:23:12How are you guys doing?
00:23:13We're almost done.
00:23:15Did you find that room?
00:23:16Piece of cake.
00:23:19I'm going to go make some coffee.
00:23:24How'd you do?
00:23:24Well, I divvied up all the clothes.
00:23:26Now we're thrift shop chic.
00:23:29What the fuck is this?
00:23:32I'm glad to see I'm good for morale.
00:23:39Someone has to be on the lookout all the time?
00:23:42Yep.
00:23:44We don't want anybody sneaking up on us, do we?
00:23:50Can I try?
00:23:52Sure.
00:23:53Use that to focus.
00:23:58Does that work?
00:24:00Yeah, it looks great.
00:24:02Let's just hope we never have to use it.
00:24:08I see a car.
00:24:10What?
00:24:17The basement, come on, move, everybody.
00:24:19I've got to get Amy.
00:24:20Put your food in that corner and everything else over there.
00:24:24I just want to put my foot in your ass.
00:24:26Oh, shit.
00:24:38We need to get downstairs now.
00:24:41Okay, okay.
00:24:42Go, go, go.
00:25:00Run, baby.
00:25:02Run.
00:25:07Let's go.
00:25:13Move it, move it.
00:25:14Come on, faster, faster.
00:25:14Go, go, go, go.
00:25:17Get in there.
00:25:24I saw the car first.
00:25:26Very good work, young lady.
00:25:28But from now on, we're going to have to whisper.
00:25:45I found this in the first aid kit.
00:25:47It might help you here better.
00:25:49Yeah, that's worth a drive.
00:25:50How many are there?
00:25:51Just one.
00:25:53He's not military.
00:25:54Maybe a neighbor.
00:25:56Well, if it's just one guy, then let's...
00:26:00We're not there yet.
00:26:11He might be a fugitive like us.
00:26:14Who just wandered by a safe house.
00:26:16Maybe he's the owner.
00:26:18Or he knows the owner's not here.
00:26:20It's the best time to rob the place.
00:26:23Well, then, maybe he'll just take what he wants and go away.
00:26:26Yeah, and what if he doesn't?
00:26:27Then we lose the element of surprise.
00:26:30I'm aware of that.
00:26:50Maybe we could talk to him.
00:26:52There's an old Russian proverb.
00:26:55One meets no friends deep in the forest.
00:26:57Shh, I think he's coming downstairs.
00:27:22Shh.
00:27:23I know you're there.
00:27:27I have a knife.
00:27:32And I've got a gun.
00:27:46What's your name?
00:27:48Jeff Mills.
00:27:52You're on the run at you.
00:27:54Hey, we're asking the questions.
00:27:58Says who?
00:27:59Says the guy with the gun.
00:28:04I thought we were done for.
00:28:06Where did Mark get the gun?
00:28:08He says Martin gave it to him.
00:28:11What are you doing here?
00:28:14My job.
00:28:15Yeah, which is what?
00:28:17I went to Rise and Lodges.
00:28:19Lock them up.
00:28:20Make sure the pipes don't freeze.
00:28:23So what you're saying is you don't have anything to do with the war?
00:28:26I've seen the soldiers.
00:28:35So what's the story?
00:28:36Well, he says he has nothing to do with the war.
00:28:41Do you believe him?
00:28:43I do.
00:28:44So we're detaining an innocent man?
00:28:46What are you, his lawyer now?
00:28:47Well, it looks like he needs one.
00:28:50Let's focus on what we're going to do with this guy.
00:28:52We don't have to do anything.
00:28:53We can just let him go.
00:28:55What makes you think that redneck's not going to turn us into the first local he comes across?
00:28:59That guy is country to the core, and I got news for you.
00:29:02Those folks are not on our side.
00:29:04That's a classist assumption.
00:29:05Maybe.
00:29:07But I'm not going to gamble with my life just to prove that I'm PC.
00:29:10Mark, what do you think we should do with him?
00:29:15Well, I think we should lock him up.
00:29:19Are you serious?
00:29:22It's ironic, isn't it?
00:29:24Righteous fugitives become reluctant jailers.
00:29:27Locking him up?
00:29:28What would that entail?
00:29:31I can't believe you're even considering this.
00:29:33Any of you.
00:29:36Where would you keep him?
00:29:38We.
00:29:41I think it's important to realize that if we're going to do this, we are all going to do this.
00:29:55There's a walk-in closet.
00:29:57We can convert it into a cell.
00:29:59A cell?
00:30:00We can make it like a bedroom.
00:30:01What if somebody misses him?
00:30:04He's not wearing a wedding ring.
00:30:06A guy like that's dating his right hand and a bottle of bourbon.
00:30:09Believe me, no one is going to miss this guy.
00:30:12What about the moral considerations?
00:30:14Look, we're not talking about hurting him.
00:30:17That isn't the point.
00:30:19Then what is the point?
00:30:22It's not who we are.
00:30:25Max, am I right?
00:30:29Maybe it's who we have to be.
00:30:35You don't have to do this.
00:30:36Yeah, I'm afraid we do.
00:30:44You've got to be fucking kidding me.
00:30:45You'll get plenty of food.
00:30:47Just shower a day.
00:30:48This is bullshit.
00:30:50I agree.
00:30:52But, it's the best we could do.
00:30:54Hey, just out of curiosity, what do you think of the president?
00:30:57The president?
00:30:59He's going to win this war.
00:31:00Then scumbags like you are going to get bullets in the head.
00:31:08Jack was right.
00:31:09That guy is not on our side.
00:31:13Put his truck in the garage.
00:31:15On it.
00:31:28You're not listening to me.
00:31:29I am listening to you.
00:31:30What I'm not doing is agreeing with you.
00:31:33You realize he's just some guy who looks after the lodge.
00:31:35But that doesn't mean we can trust him.
00:31:47What are you doing?
00:31:48Looking for something to read.
00:31:52Shouldn't you be annoying your parents?
00:31:54You don't like kids, do you?
00:31:57No.
00:31:59Why not?
00:32:01Because they're short.
00:32:04That's fucking stupid.
00:32:07Do your parents know that you swear like a sailor?
00:32:12They say it's okay.
00:32:13As long as I use the expertise for emphasis.
00:32:18Do they have the Lord of the Rings?
00:32:20No, just airport thrillers, celebrity biographies.
00:32:25What are they?
00:32:26Gossip for the mentally deficient.
00:32:30How much do you know about the Constitution?
00:32:33Nothing.
00:32:35Now that is the situation we are going to have to rectify.
00:32:39Sit.
00:32:46Do you know what this is?
00:32:48This is a copy of the Constitution of the United States.
00:32:52Little book.
00:32:54Big ideas.
00:32:55I regard this document with the same reverence other people reserve for the Bible.
00:33:00You know why?
00:33:01Because this is the owner's manual for our great democracy.
00:33:14Fuck off.
00:33:15Fuck off.
00:33:26We'll starve if you want to.
00:33:28It won't be my doing.
00:33:33Hey, how long are you going to keep me here?
00:33:35Not a moment longer than we have to.
00:33:49Six weeks into what is now being called America's second civil war,
00:33:54military strategists have begun referring to the conflict as a war of attrition.
00:33:59Neither side has gained significant ground in recent clashes,
00:34:02and it seems certain that hostilities will extend through Christmas.
00:34:09Mom, what?
00:34:10I need a hat and gloves.
00:34:13What? Why?
00:34:14It's really cold outside.
00:34:32Thanks.
00:34:37Worried about the weather?
00:34:40Cold is going to be a problem.
00:34:42It's going to get worse.
00:34:47Why don't you call everybody in for a meeting?
00:35:11Thank you.
00:35:12Thank you.
00:35:12Thank you.
00:35:16Where's Amy?
00:35:17She's reading upstairs.
00:35:19Okay.
00:35:20Three, four weeks on the outside.
00:35:22All right.
00:35:22I mean...
00:35:23All right, people, listen up.
00:35:25Clearly, we have some decisions to make.
00:35:28Martin is two weeks overdue.
00:35:31Doesn't look like the war's going to be ending anytime soon.
00:35:35And, uh...
00:35:36Now we're going to have to deal with winter.
00:35:41We could throw a Donner party.
00:35:43We could throw a Donner party.
00:35:45Too soon?
00:35:50How much food do we have left?
00:35:52About a month's worth.
00:35:54If we start rationing.
00:35:59What about gas for the generator?
00:36:01About the same.
00:36:03We could use the fireplaces for heat.
00:36:06Uh, smoke.
00:36:07I could see it for miles.
00:36:10So, what are you thinking?
00:36:13One of us is going to have to go on a supply run.
00:36:28You realize you are not going to have any idea where you are once you get out there.
00:36:32I have a watch for the compass.
00:36:35I'll be back before you even know it.
00:36:38Listen, I need you to be in charge while I'm away.
00:36:40Hmm.
00:36:42Hmm.
00:36:47I need you to do this.
00:36:51I don't need this.
00:36:57Mark.
00:36:58You know I can still go if you want me to.
00:37:01Thanks.
00:37:03It's got to be me.
00:37:05Mark.
00:37:07Don't think we're not grateful.
00:37:09She's right.
00:37:10You did good.
00:37:14Hey, get over here.
00:37:18You be careful in those woods, you hear?
00:37:20You too.
00:37:22Deal.
00:37:24Give me up.
00:37:26Ay, ay, ay.
00:37:29I'll be back in a couple of days.
00:37:41This for Mills?
00:37:42Yeah, it should still be hot.
00:37:47What?
00:37:48The gun?
00:37:49Oh.
00:37:59Make sure you bring it right back.
00:38:02Yeah.
00:38:14Where's your boss?
00:38:16Mark's not my boss.
00:38:18Man, they really got you done some shit work, don't they?
00:38:22Get it?
00:38:23Shit work?
00:38:24I have a master's degree in political science.
00:38:27So that's it.
00:38:30What?
00:38:31That's why they have you empty in my latrine.
00:38:34And why is that?
00:38:35Because they're jealous.
00:38:38They know you're the one who should be calling the shots.
00:38:40They can't handle that.
00:38:42So what do they do?
00:38:43They make you shit boy.
00:38:48I dumped my dues for the day.
00:38:50Run on, shit boy.
00:38:51Fuck you.
00:38:53Fuck you.
00:38:54Fuck you.
00:38:57Fuck you.
00:38:58Fuck you.
00:38:59Fuck you.
00:39:18You're not on for another hour.
00:39:20I know.
00:39:21I just thought we could talk.
00:39:23About what?
00:39:25You like movies?
00:39:26Not particularly.
00:39:28I ask because this situation here reminds me of a movie called The Quiet Earth.
00:39:33It's a story of a woman who has to choose between the last two men on Earth.
00:39:36Not going to happen.
00:39:37What?
00:39:39Never mind two.
00:39:40I wouldn't sleep with you if you were the last man on Earth.
00:39:43Come on.
00:39:43I'm a journalist.
00:39:44I'm just asking questions.
00:39:45The latest report suggests that at least six U.N. infantry divisions have crossed the Canadian border.
00:39:52Those divisions are expected to begin supporting resistance forces in Michigan, Wisconsin, and New York by the end of the
00:40:00week.
00:40:00Ethan!
00:40:02I think I see something.
00:40:03What?
00:40:04Where?
00:40:06Over there.
00:40:12I don't see anything.
00:40:14Look again.
00:40:15Way in the distance.
00:40:27They're not government.
00:40:29And they don't look like free America.
00:40:31It's probably just some yahoos out to steal whatever they can get their hands on.
00:40:33You mean looters?
00:40:36Every war's got them.
00:40:40The U.N. is sending troops to support free America.
00:40:43That's great.
00:40:46Shit.
00:40:47Where's Amy?
00:40:49I don't know.
00:40:53Amy!
00:40:56Amy!
00:41:01Cool!
00:41:10Amy!
00:41:12Amy!
00:41:13Amy!
00:41:14What are you thinking?
00:41:19Where did you get this?
00:41:20It's mine.
00:41:21Who else knows about it?
00:41:22Just Dad.
00:41:28Thank God.
00:41:30Mom knows about the phone.
00:41:31Later.
00:41:32Where is everybody in the panic room?
00:41:33Sandy went to get Mills.
00:41:35Sandy?
00:41:36Come on.
00:41:36Downstairs.
00:41:36Go, go, go.
00:41:48I need you to come with me.
00:41:50Is there someone here?
00:41:52Help!
00:41:55Help!
00:41:55Oh, yeah.
00:41:58Oh.
00:41:59Now get on your feet and keep your mouth shut, you bitch.
00:42:10Damn.
00:42:13Stop it.
00:42:21Keep an eye on him.
00:42:23Keep an eye on him.
00:42:28Jesus, what did you do to him?
00:42:30What I had to.
00:42:36There are two armed men upstairs.
00:42:38Hopefully, they're just going to take what they want and then leave.
00:42:40But in the meantime, I need you guys to stay back.
00:42:42What about you?
00:42:43I've got the door.
00:42:46Shouldn't you have the gun?
00:42:47No.
00:42:49No.
00:43:07I need you.
00:43:11I need you.
00:43:12I need you.
00:43:18I need you.

00:48:48Hoping Mark will come driving out of the woods with some crazy story about how he couldn't possibly get back
00:48:54till now.
00:48:56Not that you're doing a bad job or anything.
00:48:58Oh no, no, I get it, I understand.
00:49:01Did she want something?
00:49:03Some breakfast.
00:49:04Oh jeez.
00:49:06I'm just standing out here and I completely...
00:49:10No worries.
00:49:12I'll get on it right away.
00:49:14Thanks, Sandy.
00:49:21Good morning.
00:49:23I'll take three eggs over easy, two pieces of bacon, a warm croissant, and some French preserves, please.
00:49:34Or some really old oatmeal would be great, too.
00:49:37Sit down.
00:49:38I take it this is some avant-garde art project?
00:49:42Toilet paper.
00:49:44Right.
00:49:51Good luck.
00:49:53Good luck.
00:49:54Good luck.
00:49:56Good luck.
00:50:01Do you have a second?
00:50:02Of course.
00:50:03I was just hoping that the looters had left something behind, but so far no luck.
00:50:09What's up?
00:50:10Max didn't do too well last night.
00:50:12What happened?
00:50:14The cold is debilitating, and I think he's been having chest pains he's not telling me about.
00:50:19How do you know that?
00:50:21His nitro tablets are almost gone.
00:50:25Okay.
00:50:27I'll run the heating for three hours tonight, and, uh, could he use an extra blanket?
00:50:32It couldn't hurt.
00:50:34I'll take care of it.
00:50:35Thanks.
00:50:45That's it?
00:50:46Nancy said to put mills on half rations.
00:50:49Give him a full portion.
00:50:51But Nancy said...
00:50:52I'll talk to Nancy.
00:50:57I'll talk to Nancy.
00:51:06David, how many blankets does mills have?
00:51:10Two, I think.
00:51:12Take one, please.
00:51:14We need it for Max.
00:51:15Okay.
00:51:21Hey, shit boy.
00:51:26What's this?
00:51:27Your rations have been cut.
00:51:29By her.
00:51:31Me.
00:51:33I don't know.
00:51:35Looks like somebody got a demotion.
00:51:37What do you mean?
00:51:39From a handgun to a crowbar?
00:51:41That's a demotion in my book.
00:51:44I don't need a gun to deal with you.
00:51:46She took it, didn't she?
00:51:48Your balls and my breakfast.
00:51:50That woman's a thief.
00:51:52I'll tell you what.
00:51:53You want full portions again?
00:51:55You have to do something for me.
00:51:58I ain't gonna blow you.
00:52:01How well do you know this area?
00:52:03Like the back of my hand.
00:52:06Why?
00:52:07You thinking about making a run for it?
00:52:11You are, aren't you?
00:52:14If you do, you're gonna need me.
00:52:17In your dreams.
00:52:18I know these woods.
00:52:20I sure as shit know how to get out of them.
00:52:22I can find food, shelter.
00:52:25Hell, I'll even vouch for you
00:52:27if we run to the government patrol.
00:52:30What do you say?
00:52:32We got a deal?
00:52:44I'm waiting.
00:52:46Give me a second.
00:52:47I'm thinking.
00:52:54What's the matter?
00:52:56It smells funny.
00:52:58Yeah.
00:52:58It's old.
00:52:59It kind of smells like you.
00:53:02I'm old, too.
00:53:05Where'd you get it?
00:53:06It belonged to my father.
00:53:07He had to study the Constitution
00:53:10to become a United States citizen.
00:53:12And after he passed the exam,
00:53:14he carried that with him
00:53:15everywhere he went
00:53:16for the rest of his life.
00:53:18Like you do.
00:53:20Exactly.
00:53:23Amy,
00:53:24Max needs to rest.
00:53:26One more question, please.
00:53:33Okay.
00:53:37It's about the man in the closet.
00:53:40Well, what about him?
00:53:42If we keep him without a trial,
00:53:44doesn't that violate Amendment 14?
00:53:47Ah, you mean,
00:53:48nor shall any state
00:53:49deprive any person
00:53:50of life, liberty, or property
00:53:52without due process of law?
00:53:58That's a tough question.
00:54:00I guess I'd have to say
00:54:01that the Constitution
00:54:04governs policies, affairs,
00:54:06and actions
00:54:07of the government.
00:54:09And we're not the government.
00:54:11We're just a group of people
00:54:13trying to survive.
00:54:15What's the difference?
00:54:23Two pairs of socks
00:54:24and my feet are still freezing.
00:54:25Did you tell Sandy
00:54:26to give Mills full rations?
00:54:28We can't starve the guy.
00:54:29No, but we can't afford
00:54:30to waste extra food
00:54:31on the criminal.
00:54:33How many times
00:54:34do I have to remind everyone
00:54:35that the man's only crime
00:54:36was being in the wrong place
00:54:37at the wrong time?
00:54:38He goes back
00:54:39on half rations tomorrow.
00:54:41That's it.
00:54:41No discussion.
00:54:42It's not a debate.
00:54:43I thought it was a conversation.
00:54:48What are you doing out of bed?
00:54:49I'm sitting on the edge.
00:54:53Why aren't you under the blankets?
00:54:55I was choking on my back.
00:54:58We can't have you freezing either.
00:55:07Are you having chest pain?
00:55:23I can't have you questioning my orders.
00:55:26What?
00:55:27You heard me.
00:55:28Orders?
00:55:29But listen to yourself.
00:55:30You sound like...
00:55:31Alita, what do you want me to say?
00:55:33Somebody's got a man up.
00:55:36I don't know what to say to that.
00:55:43Oh, fuck.
00:55:49Max, you have to stay put.
00:55:52You sound like my wife.
00:55:54I didn't know you were married.
00:55:56Widowed.
00:55:58Nearly 20 years now.
00:56:00I'm sorry.
00:56:01No.
00:56:02It was a good life.
00:56:07Try to get some sleep.
00:56:09Get out of sleep.
00:56:22That's not what you said three days ago.
00:56:24The situation was different then.
00:56:26Yeah.
00:56:27We had three days more food
00:56:28to keep us going out there.
00:56:29Where's Ethan?
00:56:30I'm here.
00:56:32What's up?
00:56:34We're discussing whether or not
00:56:35we should try to make a supply run.
00:56:37I thought we settled that.
00:56:40Circumstances have changed.
00:56:42Max's health is failing.
00:56:44I can't be sure without the proper tests,
00:56:46but I think he has pneumonia
00:56:47as well as angina.
00:56:49I don't have any antibiotics,
00:56:51and he's out of nitroglycerine tablets,
00:56:53so there's nothing to treat either condition.
00:56:56You think we should go looking for medicine?
00:56:58Without it,
00:56:59he won't be with us much longer.
00:57:03So,
00:57:05we go?
00:57:07Wait.
00:57:07We can't sacrifice the whole group
00:57:09just to save one person.
00:57:10You just don't want to go.
00:57:11No.
00:57:12As a matter of fact,
00:57:13I don't.
00:57:13We made a decision as a group
00:57:15that staying here
00:57:16was our best shot at survival.
00:57:17I don't see how Max's condition
00:57:19changes anything.
00:57:20Abby is talking about a death sentence.
00:57:23I understand that.
00:57:24We have eight days of supplies, correct?
00:57:29Correct.
00:57:29Okay, let's lay out our options.
00:57:32Option one,
00:57:33we send one person.
00:57:35Uh, we tried that.
00:57:36Anybody heard from Mark lately?
00:57:40Option two,
00:57:41we send a few people.
00:57:42that just increases the chances
00:57:44of somebody talking
00:57:45if they get caught.
00:57:46It's got to be all of us.
00:57:49Max can't go,
00:57:50and I won't abandon a patient.
00:57:52Fine.
00:57:53Everybody but you and Max.
00:57:56Ethan?
00:57:58We can't just let him die.
00:58:01What about Amy?
00:58:02How well do you think
00:58:04she's going to do out there?
00:58:05What about the obvious choice?
00:58:07We stay here,
00:58:08we do what we can for Max,
00:58:09and we wait for help.
00:58:10I think we all know
00:58:11that that's the safest,
00:58:13most rational thing to do.
00:58:15He's right.
00:58:16We can't make this
00:58:18an emotional decision.
00:58:19The last we heard,
00:58:20the UN was sending troops
00:58:22in through Canada.
00:58:23For all we know,
00:58:23the war could already be over.
00:58:25Or it could go on for months.
00:58:36The true measure of any society
00:58:38can be found
00:58:38in how it treats
00:58:39its most vulnerable members.
00:58:42What are you,
00:58:43a fortune cookie?
00:58:44How about this?
00:58:45The most justice can be found
00:58:47by doing the most good
00:58:48for the most people.
00:58:54I'm going to go check on Max.
00:59:07What about the gun?
00:59:08What about it?
00:59:10If anybody leaves,
00:59:11they're going to need protection.
00:59:14The gun stays with me.
00:59:17And I'm not going anywhere.
00:59:21So what?
00:59:22You have the gun,
00:59:23so you decide whether
00:59:24the rest of us live or die?
00:59:37I'm just saying,
00:59:38this doesn't change anything.
00:59:39Yeah.
00:59:40This was so funny.
00:59:42Look,
00:59:43you might have to
00:59:43let me go for this.
00:59:44Yeah.
00:59:45It's okay.
00:59:46It's okay.
00:59:46I'm getting it out of here.
00:59:47I think.
00:59:48I'm going to love it.
00:59:49I'm going to love it.
00:59:50Max loved this for you.
00:59:52Yeah.
00:59:53It's so beautiful.
00:59:54It's so beautiful.
00:59:55Shall we begin?
00:59:58Max.
00:59:59Well,
01:00:01Max was a pain in the ass.
01:00:04But he was our pain in the ass
01:00:05and often enough our conscience.
01:00:09Max was not shy about voicing his opinion,
01:00:12as we all know.
01:00:15But he wasn't just a talker.
01:00:19Max believed that our best chance for survival
01:00:24lay in us remaining within these walls.
01:00:29So he did what he had to do to make that possible.
01:00:34To Max.
01:00:35To Max.
01:00:36To Max.
01:00:37To Max.
01:00:40Does anybody know a Jewish prayer for the dead?
01:00:49We, the people of the United States,
01:00:53in order to form a more perfect union,
01:00:55establish justice,
01:00:57ensure domestic tranquility,
01:01:00provide for the common defense,
01:01:02promote the general welfare,
01:01:03and secure the blessings of liberty
01:01:05to ourselves and our posterity,
01:01:08to ordain and establish this constitution
01:01:11for the United States of America.
01:01:13You're here.
01:01:14You're here.
01:01:17To Max.
01:01:21Hold on.
01:01:44We're getting out of here.
01:01:46Great.
01:01:47Stay there.
01:01:49We're going to need a map.
01:01:51Draw the area
01:01:52and anything else that might be useful.
01:02:00I thought you said you knew this place
01:02:01like the back of your hand.
01:02:05If we're both going,
01:02:06you don't need a map.
01:02:10Draw it.
01:02:12Fuck off shit, boy.
01:02:14Draw it!
01:02:17I said fuck off!
01:02:20God, shit.
01:02:22I'm going to kill you.
01:02:23Fuck.
01:02:24Fuck.
01:02:26God.
01:02:27Why couldn't you just fucking draw the map, man?
01:02:30God.
01:02:31God.
01:02:32Shit.
01:02:33You're a real fucking asshole,
01:02:35you know that?
01:02:36Fuck.
