They had no survival instincts — wait until they start leaping through the trees. Merazonia Wildlife Rescue told us how their wildlife team patiently taught Juna and Lars how to live like coatis again — and what it was like seeing them finally thrive in the canopy!

00:00Juna and Lars were rescued from the pet trade.
00:05So it's definitely very important to set those boundaries for them.
00:10The first few days was just really getting them used to going out.
00:15They're closely related to raccoons.
00:17They're super busy, they'd always be foraging nose in the ground.
00:21So it started out a lot with trying to show them different things to look for food.
00:28And then later on, try and be as boring as possible really, so they start exploring themselves.
00:37Some of the milestones were definitely them starting to find food for themselves.
00:44Starting to climb up high in the trees as well, at the start they were very scared of that.
00:49But later on they were up in the highest trees, just jumping from branch to branch.
00:56In total it took us about six months of daily walks.
01:03And the last month was just us being in the release cage, making sure they were okay.
01:10It was very exciting to be able to release them like that and to just let them do their own
01:17thing really.
01:21We all knew they were ready and it was good to see them go off and observe their wild behaviour.
01:28And I'm going to see them and that's the end of that, I'll see them for a little later.
