No matter what’s happening around them, they always stop for one more. Leonid and Valentina were driving at night when they spotted a tiny white kitten alone on the highway and immediately turned back for her. Dodo editor Tarang shares how the married Ukrainian vets continue making room for animals like Jelly while living and working through the war.

00:00This couple was driving late at night when something bright on the side of the road caught
00:03their eye. That's when they found this tiny little kitten all by herself.
00:08She was just sitting on the side of a dark road watching car after car go by.
00:12There's no telling how long she'd been out there for before Leonid and Valentina found her.
00:16Together they run a small animal hospital and sanctuary in the middle of an active war zone
00:21in Ukraine. But there's one thing to know about these two is that stopping for an animal in need
00:27is kind of what they do. Leonid and Valentina are a married couple and they're both veterinarians.
00:32Instead of evacuating they stayed behind to treat and rescue animals who have nowhere to go.
00:40When they got back to their hospital they discovered how seriously Jelly had been hurt.
00:45She had multiple injuries including a spinal injury, a broken femur, and a severe head injury
00:51that left her permanently deaf. So Leo and Valentina did what they do best and they got to work right
00:56away. They treated her injuries and stayed with her through a recovery that was not going to be easy.
01:02Jelly would always walk a little differently.
01:07She wouldn't regain any of her hearing. But watching her thrive after everything she had
01:12been through made it impossible for Leo and Valentina to not fall in love with her.
01:17We cover so many stories about people caring for animals in circumstances that most of us can never
01:22imagine. And every time we're reminded that compassion doesn't wait for life to become easier.
01:28Leo and Valentina could have kept driving that night, but instead they stopped. And now Jelly is
01:32exactly where she belongs, in a loving home by the very couple who rescued her.
01:37Jeanne encuentro with my wonderful children.
01:38Andrea 12th of the fall is born in way of springtime, but we don't forget the same thing.
01:41And I told you, I was walking back to her.
