Transcript
00:00some big news the uh the Texans are according to Adam Schefter this is the first I've seen the
00:06report of it I'm sure there's others out there who have it now but the first one that popped
00:09on my timeline uh Texans and QB coach Gerard Johnson have parted ways per sources so Gerard's
00:18been here since D'Amico got here right he's been the he was the QB coach when Bobby Slowick was
00:23the OC they like most of the staff were kept around last year even after hiring Nick Cayley
00:30so the timing is interesting with this Seth Gerard had interviewed for a couple of offensive
00:35coordinator jobs he obviously didn't get those um but Gerard Johnson who was probably still is you
00:42know you you know you a lot of guys get fired and go on to have great coaching careers yeah
00:46but
00:47certainly viewed uh coming into the coaching community as one of the bright young minds on
00:53the offensive side of the ball and um I mean this you could open this up into 29 different directions
00:59of speculation the the problem and the tough part is it's always with any position coach
01:04all right how much of an effect is he having on the quarterback either positively or negatively
01:09or um I don't know like what their parting ways all right was he let go did he not come
01:16to terms
01:16on a new contract that he wanted uh who knows but we do know that CJ has not progressed as
01:24rapidly
01:24or as much as we would like yeah you're the quarterback coach and the quarterback is the
01:30perceived to be the problem right right right right so I mean like but that and that's a tough thing
01:36with position coaches though um you know one of the one of the old philosophies is like okay how good
01:40is the position coach well uh how good are the players playing and I like I can look at Rod
01:44Wright the
01:45defensive line coach and I've like I know what I'm talking about when it comes to coaching defensive
01:51linemen I've watched him coach so I've seen it firsthand just how good a coach he is I told you
01:56before I'm jealous that I didn't some of the things that he's teaching these guys are things that I
02:01didn't realize coaches were coaching um like he's really really smart in the way he breaks everything
02:06down but also the defensive line consistently has guys playing above their scouting report or above
02:12where they what they've done at different places so uh like he's a good d-line coach um quarterback's a
02:18lot trickier because the biggest variable is just flat out what's the natural ability of your quarterback
02:24right then your other variable is the defensive coordinator then your other variable is the
02:28quarterback's coach and they all you know you know intertwine and play off of each other so I don't
02:33know maybe there'll be some juicy tidbit okay later on the follow-up to this on the text page
02:39from lots of people the base power text line 713-572-4610 again if you're just tuning in
02:46Gerard Johnson and the Texans have parted ways according to Adam Schefter that's the extent of
02:51the detail we have the one name that is now coming in on the text page flooding in as to
02:57who they want
02:57to be the quarterback coach now Case Soraya Keenum you got it buddy you got it now hire Case Keenum
03:04to
03:04replace him that is a text um all caps toss Keenum the bag to coach up CJ look I said
03:12this when we did
03:14a segment within the last few weeks uh you know it was a segment we did like our five point
03:20plan
03:20to to you know fix the Texans this offseason or what the five biggest things we would do
03:25and obviously you know uh yeah we had uh you know trade up to draft Jeremiah Love you know go
03:31get this
03:31offensive lineman find some I remember one of them was find some that you know shop in that veteran
03:38value aisle in the secondary to build your depth there yeah the fifth one that we came to on that
03:43list was get Case Keenum back in the building in some shape form or fashion are they willing to pay
03:48Case Keenum quarterback coach three million dollars per year uh because that's what Case Keenum can make
03:55as the emergency quarterback for the Chicago Bears holding a clipboard yeah yeah but I mean
04:00that's one of the things people will bring up though is wow Case was here CJ's rookie year
04:05had an incredible rookie season yeah Case was gone after that oh Case is with the Bears this year and
04:11he's part of uh you know a resurgent Caleb Williams or at least I guess maybe a a surging Caleb
04:17Williams
04:17sure that or an improved Caleb Williams I I think there definitely could be something to that
04:22now is that if if if only you're signing him to be your emergency quarterback but he's in the room
04:28and around and everything um there's I would definitely explore it well Case Keenum I guess
04:33the big question would be does Case Keenum want to coach someday and in case he's into a lot of
04:37things
04:37he's made a lot of money coach though you know yeah he seems like he seems like a coach he
04:42does no no no
04:43yeah we as we've been saying he was essentially a coach for CJ when he was here I think is
04:48how
04:48his dad also didn't his dad also though didn't make millions of dollars in the NFL right so which
04:53which can which can open up a variety of angles to this thing because you know Case I'm sure is
04:58involved in some businesses some side ventures and things like that does he like that does he want to
05:03coach does he want to live a coach's lifestyle that's a big thing I would say the three million
05:07bucks if I had to guess probably factors in less than what if he wants to coach how does he
05:13view that
05:13opportunity and we're totally speculating now if he's even in the mix for something like this again
05:18the Texans are parting ways with Gerard Johnson so they have an opening now at quarterbacks coach
05:23getting an opportunity to go to a familiar building to coach a quarterback that you're familiar with
05:29there's no burn-in period with CJ Stroud he knows the ABCs of coaching CJ Stroud and what CJ likes
05:35and
05:35doesn't like I think it's a pretty good opportunity as far as an entry-level opportunity goes
05:40you know it's a it's a especially specifically for him it's in a city he knows a place he knows
05:46a head coach that he knows a GM that he knows it's a very familiar surrounding with a quarterback who
05:52let's face it Seth if CJ recaptures that magic Case Keenum all of a sudden becomes a hot name
05:58oh yeah oh that's a smart move for him right that's my point yeah yeah yeah for just leapfrogging
06:05into being an offensive coordinator or something okay yeah yeah get to that accelerated pace um if
06:11he wants to coach if he wants to coach Matt Schaub just took a job with Arizona right correct as
06:17the
06:17quarterback's coach yep that's right that's right do you think we should try it should we wait is it is
06:22that uh what's the etiquette on stealing a quarterback coach from another team that's been there for a week
06:28oh no yeah I'm thinking about Case Keenum yeah that's funny um no for Case Keenum I'm putting
06:36myself in his shoes where being a backup quarterback as many people will tell you like it's a it's the
06:41best job in the world that's yeah when you're an older quarterback yes it is when you're a younger
06:46quarterback it's not so much fun being the guy that's just the the the fill-in dude the guy that's
06:50just trying to make no you don't take any punishment you make a few million bucks oh no no no
06:54Brian
06:54Horrier actually had a really good article about the stress of being a backup quarterback as a young
06:59player yeah where you're just you know that your opportunity could come at any moment and you just
07:04have to be dialed in mentally all the time and everything without taking any reps and all that
07:09that's a stressful job no doubt um but veteran backup quarterback that is a cushy existence especially
07:15when you're in the emergency you're basically you're being you're there as a mentor and as a guy that
07:21can also communicate with the receivers almost be uh I don't want to say a coach on the field but
07:27it's a it's a very unique spot without taking a whole lot of physical punishment yeah yeah boy this
07:32is an interesting one man I'm anxious to see you know I I'm curious you know CJ and Gerard all
07:37reports
07:38are had a great relationship Gerard would report or Gerard and CJ both would talk about how at the elite
07:4411 camp back in the day when Gerard was one of the either counselors or young coaches there that they
07:50that's where they forged their relationship um this there will be you know I would imagine there
07:56will be more information that comes out as to how we arrived at this you know Gerard walking away or
08:02was this the Texans saying we're going to move in another direction as I spitball in my brain and I'm
08:07just thinking about okay what are the things you could do to get Case Keenum on the roster as just
08:12an
08:12actual quarterback you know immediately you think okay well what if he's just your backup and you trade
08:16Davis Mills away you got to remember that Case Keenum has attempted very few passes over the
08:23course of the last that's a non-starter for football seasons yeah that's over the last four seasons he's
08:28got a three and one record but he won that game in Tennessee yeah remember that he's uh 80 uh
08:3580 he's
08:36thrown well 142 passes in the last four years yeah I'm not into that I'm not I'm not into moving
08:41on now
08:42the you know the question might be do they what does the organization think of Graham Mertz you know what
08:46he is only 36 though yeah um yeah yeah because he played like 10 years of college you know it's
08:52weird that he's only 36 years old he hasn't been in the NFL I mean his first year was 2013
08:57right yeah
08:58first year he played yeah he was first year he played practice squad in 12 yeah I guess yeah because
09:03he was in college for so long it does seem like he should be 42 years old by now um
09:08but uh yeah that
09:10would you what do you really feel about Graham Mertz and do you not want to give up on the
09:15upside of
09:15him yeah um or do you make room by by carving him off the roster yep yep that's right
