00:00So the rules are going to change this season and we're going to see a big change at home plate,
00:04which is the new ABS system that's being put in this year.
00:09And as you can see there, the top end of the zone, 53.5% of the player's height, bottom
00:15of the zone, 27% of the player's height, depth of the zone, 8.5 inches from both the front
00:19and the back of the plate to the center.
00:20So that is where the strike zone will be set. During the game, we're not going to see the box
00:26anymore because they think that somehow the players can get a hold of this information or somebody can steal it
00:32from them, give them a quick sign.
00:33I saw this in play, Ryan, the other day with the first batter of the game in Jupiter when the
00:38Marlins played the Washington Nationals.
00:40Andy Alcantara, as you'll see here, pitching to Nassim Nunez. What happens is he throws the pitch and as you're
00:48going to see, Nunez kind of checks swings here on the pitch and CB Buckner behind the plate, so they
00:55strike between them and then you'll see Nunez tap his helmet.
00:59They go to the replay. Inevitably, in less than 15 seconds from now, you're going to see that they proved
01:03that it was not a strike. Nunez gets a hit. Brady House hits a home run.
01:07The Nationals end up going on to win this game. So your thoughts thus far? Is it working for you?
01:13Not working for you? What's your opinion?
01:16So I definitely need to see it in play more. I love that we got a challenge system and not
01:21just a full automated strike.
01:24So I think there'll be way more growing pains with that, but it's just going to be the strategy of
01:29the game that's really most fascinating to me.
01:32Right now, I think guys are going to be fast and lose, kind of just tap in the head whenever
01:37they want to because they're trying to figure out who's good at this.
01:39But I'm really curious how that shift takes place once the season starts. Are we seeing any challenges in the
01:45first five innings of a game?
01:47Are there certain hitters that have a green light and others that aren't going to have a green light at
01:51all?
01:51I think the one thing we will see, I don't think we're going to see too many pitchers hitting the
01:56top of the head because I think the catchers are going to be the ones
01:59that are going to be doing those challenges. They have a much better look at it.
02:02And everything that we're hearing so far as pitchers are not very good at challenging pitches.
02:07As a former pitcher myself way back in the day, everything's a strike.
02:11So I get why they want the catchers to handle that side of it.
