00:01A Terengganu state executive councillor has been accused of using his position in government to benefit two of his sons.
00:09Datuk Hanafi Ahmad was first charged with abusing his dual role as an EXCO member and as chairman of Pankalan
00:16Bekalan Kemaman Sendirian Berhad, or PBKSB, to obtain gratification for his son, Muhammad Najmi Hanafiah.
00:23That alleged offence dates back to August 15, 2018, at the EPIK Berhad office in Teluk Kalong.
00:31The second charge mirrors the first, this time involving another son, Ahmad Kamil Hanafiah, with the alleged offence said to
00:38have taken place at the same location nearly two years later, on June 18, 2020.
00:44The 66-year-old Chukai Assemblyman, who has two wives and 13 children, denies both charges which fall under Section
00:5223 Subsection 1 of the MACC Act 2009.
00:57If convicted, Hanafiah faces up to 20 years in prison, and a fine of at least five times the value
01:04of the gratification received, or 10,000 ringgit, whichever is higher.
01:08The court released Hanafiah on bail of 30,000 ringgit, with conditions requiring him to report to the Terengganu MACC
01:15office every month until the case concludes.
01:18His passport was not surrendered, though prosecutors retain the right to apply for it if he fails to appear at
01:25any future hearing.
01:26Tuesday's court appearance is not Hanafiah's first brush with public scrutiny.
01:30Back in 2023, he drew widespread criticism after an 18-second video went viral, showing him allegedly mocking the Menurama
01:40program.
01:40In the clip, he called the food tasteless before pouring orange juice over his rice, a gesture that struck many
01:47Malaysians as tone-deaf.
01:50Hanafiah pushed back on the criticism and threatened legal action against those he accused of spreading defamatory claims.
