Fixer Upper: Colorado Mountain House - Season 1 Episode 2 - Bear With Us
Transcript
00:01Chip's dream has always been the home perched high on the mountain.
00:06Golly, we are not in Waco anymore, are we?
00:08This is our first out of Central Texas project.
00:11I love this fireplace.
00:13But I wish it was in here.
00:15I know.
00:16Does this seem problematic?
00:18I think it would be totally doable.
00:20Steve's going to be our connection point to get this project finished.
00:23I wanted to point out we had a visitor.
00:25I knew you were going to say bear.
00:27Maybe I did my last demo.
00:29And the only reason you're not demoing is because it's not in Texas.
00:33Unbelievable.
00:34My daughter, Ella, Chip had an idea to let her design the little cottage.
00:39This is your homework.
00:40Are you accepting the challenge?
00:42I'm accepting the challenge.
00:44Hopefully this is the thing that kickstarts all of the beauty she's going to create in the future.
00:49Let's go!
00:51Oh, I love me somehow.
01:01Since we left Colorado, Steve and the team have been busy.
01:04We started work on Ellis Cottage, removing the closets and opening up that space.
01:09And put in a new railing on the deck in the main house.
01:13And while everything is moving in the right direction, the reality of doing a project outside of Texas is really
01:19starting to set in.
01:19Hey, Joe, it's Steve.
01:22Hi, Steve.
01:23I got the hand-hume beams we're adding throughout the house.
01:25I think you're going to love them.
01:26But they are lighter than the existing wood, so I'm working on a solution so everything blends.
01:31And also, we got to talk about the fireplace when you got some time.
01:35We're really excited about gathering here with the whole family and even the extended family.
01:39We have about four months left to finish this project, so we're really starting to feel the pressure while we're
01:45here at home in Waco.
01:47Every project we've done, there's always a thing.
01:50There's always that one thing that likes to just kind of taunt me.
01:53Most projects have several things.
01:55But there's always, like, one major thing.
01:57And I can name them specifically on each project we've done.
02:00On the mountain house, it's a fireplace situation.
02:05This one sounds like a bummer.
02:07Why?
02:08Because there's no way to do it the way we designed.
02:13Steve was like, Joe, you've got to quickly make a new design decision.
02:18Oh.
02:19That's not what it's supposed to look like.
02:22What happened?
02:23Because we want a fireplace above and below.
02:26Okay.
02:27The ideal spot for a fireplace in this room is right here.
02:31Uh-huh.
02:31And the ideal spot for a fireplace in this room is right here.
02:35Because of this one being on the second floor, it's got to have a footer.
02:39Obviously, the deck can't support that.
02:41Uh-huh.
02:41So this has to go all the way down.
02:42Right.
02:43Because of that, I'm losing this French door in the den.
02:47Now you're just going to have this blank space.
02:49Let me just show you.
02:50That's what it was going to look like.
02:52That's beautiful.
02:54And now I have to lose this, and then it just feels like wonk, wonk.
03:01Really, at the end of the day, the choice is lose the downstairs fireplace or lose a French door.
03:07So do I just kill that and call it a day?
03:09Who cares?
03:10Hey, you know I love symmetry.
03:12Now we'll eliminate this door, but it's just everything gets tight and weird.
03:16But it's just downstairs in that one little corner.
03:19Yeah.
03:19You know, this is still the focal point.
03:21Yeah.
03:21You're going to have lots of that out there.
03:22That will be beautiful.
03:23Yeah, it's going to be great.
03:25Maybe in my mind, because for months now I've seen the downstairs have this-
03:29You know what?
03:29It is what it is.
03:30Have this beautiful fireplace centered, and then a French door, a French door, and then everything is centered around that
03:36moment.
03:37Where now-
03:38Too many words.
03:39It is what it is.
03:39So I'll just take a day, regroup, and we'll all be fine.
03:43Sounds like I get to keep both my fireplaces.
03:45That's great.
03:45You get both of your fireplaces.
03:46Great.
03:46I'll lose my French doors.
03:48Yes!
03:49I'll call Steve.
03:50All right, see you later, babe.
03:51Okay, thank you.
04:05So now that the design is complete on the main house, we have now put all of our focus onto
04:12this cottage, which is like a little guest cottage.
04:15It's a one bedroom.
04:16Really, on the exterior, everything's going to pretty much stay the same.
04:20All we're going to do is change the exterior paint color, but we're going to keep the roof.
04:25On the inside, for some reason I'm thinking the boys in this space, which is why I wanted to feel
04:30a little more masculine in the textures and the colors.
04:33But just add these feminine details, like more delicate grass, just really help balance that.
04:39And here I feel like it's like the lodge.
04:42The anchor of this space is going to be the new fireplace that we're going to install.
04:46When you're in the mountains, you think winter, a cozy fire is a dream.
04:50Then I'm going to put two windows on both sides because the view is just the most beautiful thing.
04:55So everywhere you look, hopefully there's a window and a view.
04:57So you'll see this really beautiful green that doesn't feel too punchy.
05:02Green is my favorite color.
05:03So we thought, let's put it everywhere we can.
05:05As far as a materials standpoint, we're going to keep the existing wood floors.
05:10The tongue and groove right now, it's white.
05:12We're going to paint it green.
05:14We want to play around with a little more color in there just to make it feel a little cozier.
05:18And then we're either going to keep the existing color on the walls or add this creamy plaster.
05:23This Dutch door right here actually was the Dutch door that was in the main house in the kitchen.
05:29I love that door so much.
05:30And since now that part of the kitchen is the primary bathroom, we're taking this Dutch door and putting it
05:36in this little cottage.
05:37In the kitchen, this is the tile.
05:40I love that it's tonal.
05:41You've got all different whites and creams.
05:43So I just think this is going to be a really pretty accent with this green.
05:47I just love how that plays off of each other.
05:49It's a small kitchen.
05:50So I'm really trying to add a little bit of character.
05:53You'll see that on the cabinets doing really simple brass knobs, a butcher block countertop.
05:59So it just feels timeless and classic.
06:02Here's the one bedroom in the space.
06:05And this is where I imagine it feeling kind of lodgy, but I wanted some texture.
06:09So I'm going to do this like nice dark green plaid wallpaper.
06:14And then where the existing tongue and groove is on the ceiling and all of the doors in the trim,
06:20I'm just going to match that with that same green.
06:22The bathroom.
06:23I thought to go with just one of my tried and true favorites.
06:26It's like a concrete with a limestone finish.
06:28And I thought it'd be fun to use on the wall so that it feels like a really cool statement
06:33right when you walk in.
06:34Overall, I just really wanted this to feel calm, soothing.
06:38So there's one more cottage to design and that's the one that I'm working on with Ella.
06:43She's taking lead on the design here in Waco.
06:45And I can't wait to see it come together.
06:50In the meantime, we're headed to Colorado to deal with the main house.
06:55Oh my goodness.
06:57Good night, babe.
06:59What a dream.
07:01Mountain towns are the best towns.
07:02They really are quite stunning.
07:04You have mountains.
07:05You have blue sky.
07:06Babe, look at that roaring river.
07:11I'm just so glad that the kids are with us.
07:13You know, it feels fun to be, you know, on vacation, kinda.
07:19Kids are exploring today.
07:21But really, it's like, hey, mom and dad are working.
07:23Work and play.
07:24We've got some stuff we've got to figure out.
07:25The fact that Crew brought his first fly fishing pole he got first birthday.
07:29God, I can't wait.
07:30I can't wait for you to fish down there with him.
07:32I'm gonna get after it.
07:34So what all are we excited to see regarding the property?
07:38I think we're just trying to take it a little, you know, day by day here.
07:42I think Steve's got a lot going on this week.
07:44He went this past weekend to go get all the hand-hewn beams.
07:47He picked them out individually.
07:49Those will be in the primary, the living room, really all over the house.
07:53I mean, we've got a lot.
07:55Hopefully, there aren't any more surprises, Chip.
08:04Hey, Steve.
08:06How are you?
08:06Good to see you.
08:07You too, man.
08:08Not seeing the house every day or every week, you feel a bit disconnected.
08:13How do you micromanage a project that I can't touch?
08:16Isn't it weird that we were strangers just a few short months ago, you know?
08:20Now, my wife, who I barely get a hug from, literally walks in and gives you a big bear hug.
08:26Steve saves the day.
08:26And I know she's worried about change orders, so she's buttering me up.
08:29We're coming as often as possible.
08:31There you go.
08:32Well, what are you up to today?
08:33What do you got on your mind?
08:34You know, I want to talk about your HVAC system.
08:36We're trying to figure out how to get it in.
08:37Yeah, totally.
08:37We don't have a chase.
08:38We don't have an attic.
08:39We don't have soffits.
08:40We don't have anything.
08:41It's all concrete.
08:41Because in Texas, you build an entire house-
08:44Around that.
08:44...so that all this stuff gets hidden and you never even know it exists.
08:48Right.
08:48This was not built for the HVAC side of the equation.
08:52We never put AC in Colorado.
08:54Okay.
08:54But now we do.
08:55Our winters are shorter.
08:56You're saying it's become more common than not even in these mountain town communities.
09:01Yeah, every house we do now has AC in it.
09:04So we're doing the right thing.
09:05But it's challenging every design detail.
09:09Totally.
09:09And I see that right there.
09:10And I'm like, there's going to be one in every room.
09:12So I'm really trying to understand.
09:14Yeah.
09:14Yeah.
09:14And I was afraid to show you, but I knew I had to.
09:17I have to see it.
09:17I think it's good.
09:18We have to address it now.
09:19We came up with a solution.
09:20Okay.
09:21So this unit, the floor mounted, AC and heat.
09:23And we're going to put it in the wall.
09:25And what we want to do is fur this wall out.
09:27Make it thicker.
09:28How far are we talking?
09:29This is eight and a half.
09:31So we're going to fur this wall out five inches, the whole wall.
09:34So how much of this is exposed?
09:36None of it.
09:37None of it's exposed.
09:38It'll be inside the framing.
09:38You'll never see it except for the linear bent.
09:41So it'll be in your baseboard.
09:43And we understand you want to put a piece of furniture here.
09:45I have a piece of furniture here.
09:46And it's like 65 inches tall.
09:47And I believe your furniture piece has legs on it.
09:50It does.
09:51So it would be a perfect fit.
09:52I see.
09:53Great.
09:53One of my favorite things in these renovations is the problem solving.
09:57That's what keeps me creative.
09:58So this is our conduit solution for this part of the house.
10:01And we're also going to be running the duct work from the lower level and then come up
10:04through the floor of the kitchen so that we can feed that part of the house.
10:09We'll be here for a couple days this week, so I'll check back in with you soon.
10:13Glad you liked it.
10:14Well done, Steve.
10:15Thank you, sir.
10:15All right.
10:15We'll see you here in a little bit.
10:16Thank you, Steve.
10:16Enjoy yourself.
10:19Babe, look!
10:20The beams!
10:21The beams!
10:22Holy cow!
10:22The beams!
10:24What a dream.
10:25These are gorgeous.
10:26But now I see what Steve meant because they're a lot lighter than the existing beams.
10:30Like I love how natural these look, so we need to see what he comes up with to fix the
10:35contrast.
10:36But they're beautiful.
10:38They look great.
10:38But Chip, everything looks so different.
10:41Wow.
10:42Look at these trees.
10:43I am a bit overwhelmed by the landscape.
10:45I want to take that one down.
10:46You know, look how dead that thing is.
10:47That's about to fall on the house.
10:49So that goes down.
10:50The only thing I'm seeing on the exterior that maybe I wasn't accounting for in the design was the landscape.
10:59What is this?
11:00I guess it's from these cottonwood trees.
11:02What whole lawn is that?
11:04I feel like I'm on Mars.
11:06I think every time we've come, not everything is woken up.
11:09But now everything is woken up.
11:11It's like the first time it's hit me that this is so disconnected.
11:15Like we're not physically here every day.
11:18When we come here, we're like, oh, my gosh.
11:20There's a lot of work to be done for us to finish this off by early fall.
11:24As I look that way, I'm a bit terrified now.
11:27It's like a lot of weeds.
11:29But I wouldn't, you know, we can do that little by little.
11:32I know.
11:32Just some stuff.
11:33Don't worry about that.
11:34Because worst case scenario, I think we can incorporate what we need to incorporate kind of as we go.
11:41That tree does need to go, though.
11:43Good eye.
11:44That'll be fun.
11:46Okay.
11:46Okay.
11:47This week, I'm meeting with a landscaper who I was going to walk through all the window boxes and the
11:53planters.
11:54And that's all I was putting money into.
11:56A couple hundred dollars.
11:57But now I'm going to be like, hey, listen, I need an extra favor here.
12:13This is going to be fun.
12:14I can already tell.
12:15How are you?
12:16I'm Joanna.
12:17I'm Judy.
12:17Judy.
12:18Nice to meet you.
12:19I'm Zach.
12:19Zach.
12:20I'm just so excited.
12:21Today I get to talk plants and landscape.
12:25I love gardening and I love landscape back in Texas, but I think this is a whole new learning curve.
12:30I don't know what a wildflower is and I don't know what a weed is here.
12:33I wanted to tackle the planters with y'all.
12:35But then if you have time, I'd love to walk through just the front, what we should keep, what we
12:40need to add, and then we can go from there.
12:43Beautiful.
12:43These barrel things, normally I love doing big new planters, but I was like, this feels natural.
12:49I've got five planters that I really think will help bring these porches to life.
12:54That's going to kind of be the big moment of color.
12:56It'll kind of frame all of this.
12:58I love the variation that you've brought.
13:01Some of these are perennials and some of them are annuals.
13:04Okay.
13:04Annuals will flower the whole time till cold.
13:07And the perennials just have kind of a joie de vie that we like because this is a perennial.
13:14Yep.
13:14This could be put in the garden in the fall, but it's so dramatic right now that we like to
13:20use it with the annuals.
13:22I see.
13:23Mm-hmm.
13:23If I were to leave the perennials in the winter.
13:27They might not make it in here because Colorado is very dry.
13:30So maybe all I need to think about here is just a mixture of both, but not this idea of
13:35like, I'll come back every season and maybe they're back.
13:37That's not how it works.
13:38Not in the planters.
13:39Okay, fine, fine.
13:41Very drawn to this situation.
13:43The fuchsia.
13:44My favorite thing about a planter is the spiller.
13:46You would just put on the edge.
13:47And it would kind of hide the old, the oldness.
13:50That's what I want.
13:50Which is very Colorado, these whiskey barrels.
13:52Yes.
13:53Okay, good.
13:54I love this.
13:55Lavender, yes.
13:56I just wanted to kind of show them the palette I love to work with, the textures, the layering.
14:01I'm a little more subtle when it comes to color.
14:03Yes.
14:03Very nice.
14:04I like purple.
14:06I love how muted that yellow is.
14:08It is very pretty.
14:09Any of these that do really good in window boxes, because obviously it's a little more shallow.
14:14There's a window box here.
14:15Let's bring it here and just get an idea.
14:16Is that heavy though?
14:17Should I just go straight geranium?
14:19You know what?
14:19The visual of seeing geraniums in a window box, it's pretty great.
14:24I love those.
14:25I've always wanted just like a full window box of geraniums.
14:29But we're going to walk to the front now.
14:31Let me take one of those.
14:32I just painted the house green.
14:33I want to make sure I don't do Christmas.
14:35Yeah.
14:36Or it may just pop off that green in such a beautiful way.
14:38You can educate me on what I'm looking at.
14:42I want to spend some time in here and here, because this is to me the most important part,
14:47is this walk up moment.
14:49When you look at this, what do y'all see?
14:51Is this wildflowers or is this a bunch of weeds?
14:53This is a native wildflower called false Solomon seal.
15:00And it's a ground cover.
15:01I would keep it.
15:02What about that branchy thing?
15:04This is a twin berry.
15:05This is a native.
15:06Do bears like that?
15:07They do.
15:08Oh crap.
15:08I'm so scared of bears.
15:10It can be cut down.
15:11You're not really killing it.
15:12But like this.
15:13That one I cut out down to the ground.
15:15This one you're saying cut.
15:16Some of the scraggly things, if you just cut them down, it's called hard pruning.
15:21And it'll come back.
15:22They come up more lively.
15:24I love meeting with people who are experts, who love what they do.
15:28Watching her just jump into that patch of, who knows?
15:32It could have been poison sumac.
15:33It could have been poison ivy.
15:35And I just love her knowledge.
15:37And I was trying to soak it all in, because at some point as the caretaker of this property,
15:41I'm going to have to have that same knowledge.
15:44And I can't wait to learn more from her.
15:46She doesn't know.
15:46She's going to come back here a few more times.
15:48And she's going to be my mentor.
15:50Would love just your expertise on how to set this up well.
15:53And then how do I maintain it?
15:55But I'm going to go check on the geraniums.
15:57I'll let you know.
15:58To me, landscape on any project brings everything together.
16:03I love it.
16:11We've been in Colorado for a few days now.
16:13And so today, Chip and crew are going to try out his new fly rod down at the river.
16:18This is awesome.
16:19This is awesome, son.
16:21While I'm meeting with the design team.
16:24They're also here in town.
16:26We're going to try to knock out all of the paint colors per room.
16:29I feel like we've done a lot of this back home.
16:31So I think we should be pretty close.
16:32The downstairs with the existing fireplace, we're calling that the, like, game room sitting room.
16:38We lightened up that room with the cream, but the trim around the snack bar is still dark.
16:43So it's between these two blues.
16:44And then this burgundy will be on the snack bar cabinets.
16:47I mean, I really like the left one.
16:50Mm-hmm.
16:50I know we're doing it in the reading nook.
16:52Mm-hmm. Right.
16:52I wanted to head home with 95% of the paint colors chosen.
16:57This blue-gray will go in the reading nook upstairs.
17:00And then right below it, it will go around the snack bar and the sitting room.
17:05This is the cabinetry.
17:07Two.
17:08So it's going to look like that.
17:09And then it's not too dark.
17:11I like that.
17:11Down there, there's no light.
17:12No, it won't.
17:12One of these is for the bunk room, right?
17:16Yeah.
17:17Which I think on that, what matches the wallpaper the best.
17:19It was this one.
17:20Great.
17:21We have a short timeframe here, so there's a lot to accomplish.
17:24So, um, today I'm...
17:29What do we think that is?
17:32Who's that?
17:43It's either Sasquatch or Chip Gaines, but I did think that was a bear.
17:46No, it's not a bear.
17:50No, it's not a bear.
17:50Is that a bear?
17:51No, it's a pig.
17:53That's not Chip?
17:57Oh, my gosh.
17:58It's a bear.
17:59It's a bear.
18:00Well, Chip is down there with crew.
18:04Let's go inside.
18:08Crap.
18:16Oh, he's a mad bear.
18:19I feel like we should go get Chip and crew.
18:21Anna's going down to this.
18:23Who's going down to this?
18:24Anna.
18:24Well, Anna.
18:25I don't want her risking her life.
18:26Well, someone's gotta go.
18:27No, not Anna.
18:29I don't want anyone going.
18:32Don't be on the deck, y'all.
18:39The amount of sweat.
18:42Chip, that's terrifying.
18:45I literally was like, he's gonna eat crew and you for lunch.
18:48Oh, yeah, don't trip bear.
18:49Bears know how to walk.
18:51Bear.
18:51I should have seen that coming.
18:53I kept hearing a rustling in the woods.
18:56And as always, I think Chip's gonna prank me.
18:59It's so hot.
19:00Let me tell you, when you first were acting crazy as I go,
19:03oh, that's Chip, because he would do that.
19:04But then when I really looked, it was like,
19:07I thought he was mad we were in his area.
19:11It had a stick.
19:12And it was hitting a tree.
19:14Now, do bears take sticks and whack trees?
19:16I don't know.
19:19On all fours, wiggling around like an idiot,
19:22taking a big branch, whacking stuff.
19:24And then you go in and then why did you come back out?
19:27Because then I see you walking and you look like a party gig.
19:31Chip, I really was scared.
19:33Oh, it's all very bad.
19:34And now, this is the story of my life.
19:36He just loves to scare me.
19:37But 90% of the time, I get him right before it.
19:41This one was successful.
19:43I legit was scared.
19:46Dude, you look awesome, bro.
19:48Dang.
19:48That is kind of believable.
19:50You both are in big trouble.
19:52Crew, were you in on this?
19:54Yes, ma'am.
19:55The only reason it didn't work all the way, crew,
19:57is because mama thought you were down there,
19:59so she came in to save you.
20:00I was so scared.
20:03So as I was trying to say,
20:05my philosophy on picking a paint palette
20:08is pick it in person, and that's what I'm doing.
20:11I've got so much bear hair in my mouth.
20:14You smell like a bear.
20:15Babe, I mean it.
20:15Like in my mouth.
20:17Truly, this doesn't smell good.
20:19So you.
20:19Oh, damn.
20:21That might be just me.
20:22That's what I'm saying.
20:23You mixed with cheap bear costume equals same.
20:25Babe, for real.
20:25Smell this.
20:26I just can't.
20:27That was awesome.
20:30That was awesome.
20:31I think we got her.
20:35I'm going to smell like a cheap bear suit
20:37all the way back to Texas, aren't I?
20:46So we're back here in Waco, and almost like clockwork,
20:50another pretty significant design issue has popped up.
20:53So we went to order the batch of tile,
20:57and I think the one that is the most off
20:59is this green for the kitchen.
21:01This is what we ordered,
21:02and their new batch of tile came in more of this lighter green.
21:06That's very different.
21:07I know.
21:08So.
21:10Okay.
21:11So this is the green I want for the kitchen.
21:13This was what we received a few months ago.
21:16This was an old batch.
21:18And I feel like this new green is just a little too,
21:21it's like bright.
21:23So since these are hand painted and put in the kiln,
21:26they take the color differently each time they do a new batch.
21:29Oh, no.
21:30So I talked to the manufacturer,
21:33and it sounds like if we're willing to ship them a control sample,
21:37they can match our color.
21:39They can.
21:39Okay.
21:40With the tile that I'm picking that's going in a lot of the spaces,
21:44what I'm running into is nothing's ever going to come out the same
21:47because it truly is just this handmade process.
21:50To me, though, the colors I saw today were almost too varied.
21:53Like, it told a completely different story.
21:55But that's crazy how different that is.
21:57Mm-hmm.
21:58I know.
21:59So that's what I'm a little nervous about,
22:01is like everything based off of this shade of green
22:03is now very different.
22:05I'm just trying to see, can we control that tone a little bit?
22:09Or if it's going to be completely random,
22:10then I really think I need to go back to the drawing board
22:13because we don't have a ton of time now.
22:14And we're already dealing with the variation in the wood beams.
22:17All of these details are really adding up.
22:19So we will ask them to update this new batch
22:22and have them send us a new control sample.
22:26Let's just hope for the best.
22:27Great.
22:44Holy moly, babe.
22:45Hi, Chip.
22:46It is some kind of hot.
22:47I know.
22:48It's like humid and hot here.
22:50I can deal with the heat.
22:51It's the freaking humidity that is a little bit...
22:56You okay?
22:57It's like choking me, you know?
22:58I feel suffocated.
23:00It's hot.
23:00Did you get all your chores done?
23:01Well, mostly.
23:02I'm about halfway done.
23:03You know, what I've been daydreaming about with the mountain house
23:06is just like how cool it's going to be.
23:09Like the weather.
23:10We're going to be down on the river, even if it's hot.
23:13I can only imagine down by the river it's not.
23:15But I don't think it even gets hot in Colorado.
23:19I think the last 20 plus years we've been doing renovations,
23:23summer is always our busiest season on these projects.
23:26Yeah, that's true.
23:27This will be the first project that we do in the summer
23:30where we're not sweating profusely.
23:32And I, my only fear is like that we only from this point
23:35moving forward do fixtures in Colorado.
23:38The funny thing is once we experiment and go there for the summer,
23:42we're going to be like, we work remote now.
23:44Yeah.
23:44We work for Magnolia, all remote.
23:46Okay.
23:47Well.
23:48Well, wish me luck.
23:49I'm going to get back out of here.
23:50Don't want to sit and craft with me
23:51while I'm putting some of these things together?
23:53As hot as it is, babe, that looks even more miserable.
23:56I can't imagine.
23:57You don't want to press flowers with me?
23:59No.
24:00Today I will say I wish we were there now.
24:04Good luck out there, babe.
24:07Just a few more weeks until we get some of that fresh Colorado air.
24:46today is a great day at the mountain house because we're getting to see the progress on the big
24:50cottage steve this already looks night and day different just with the painted ceiling
24:57it's really pretty the large cottage has been kind of where we leave all of the materials so
25:04every time we've come here it's not our headquarters yeah it's our little baby
25:07nothing's really happened in here this time though laura is here and while we're together
25:13we're trying to tackle every single thing in this space so that steve knows how to keep moving
25:18forward one thing what i'm seeing is too yellow on the wall which is honestly what i was worried about
25:24definitely your call okay let's look at these other samples these were two that you chose for the lower
25:29for the main house so i mean hold one up yeah maybe right here okay that makes it feel cooler
25:36it feels
25:36like concrete almost i don't want it to look like concrete walls it's getting adobe-ish do you
25:42think um yeah i'm sure that may be too white but let's see this was that cream color
25:50that too white i can see it in your eyes you're thinking about it
25:57am i gonna like this plaster what do you want to do you want to think about it in context
26:01of the
26:01roman shades like yes so reminder this will be green green
26:10it's too cold in here yeah it's not the right tone do you think with it next to the yellow
26:16is that what i'm saying i'm just wondering because that's what it plays games on you sorry
26:20color go in there yeah same color yeah this might be a cleaner way to see it okay now you
26:28can get a
26:28feel for it next to the green this looks good next to the green actually it really does okay fine
26:33yeah
26:34it's good hurry let's move on before i change my mind and i like the gingham with it i do
26:38too
26:38so laura you gotta sign the back of this i know right get me out of here
26:44i love our dutch door that we got from the kitchen and now it works perfectly my little
26:51bear can climb in and some you're gonna name it one of these days oh yeah i'm gonna try to
26:56get
26:56him to really love me shall we go see the bathroom yes we have some of your kyle up on
27:00the wall
27:02so i've only ever seen this on the floor and i was scared but i love it on the walls
27:07oh it's really sweet it's so pretty you know this bathroom is so tiny and kind of forgetful but
27:13this is like statement yeah it really is chips bring in those lights i do want to see the scale
27:20of those in the space let's go in there let's see those joey hey bud we're right here oh look
27:26at
27:26what i got steve oh man feel how heavy these bad boys are where did you find these marfa texas
27:32the town there's no way you've ever heard of i've never heard of it there's no way how did you
27:37end
27:37up there so road trip for father's day chip asked the kids for a week-long road trip and i
27:44get this
27:45video of chip in an antique shop look at this place y'all where are we at what planet are
27:51we on
27:52we are in marfa texas it was basically an abandoned lumber yard and each of these little cubicles that
27:59used to house lumber are now filled with something you don't even know what's in it
28:02oh my gosh look at that these are sconces from from black fixtures and he asked if i wanted to
28:11buy everything in the room and i said no he said okay what about in this one section there was
28:16all
28:16these light fixtures and i said okay let's just give a mask i said sure buy the light fixtures i
28:21had
28:21no idea what they looked like chip found gold with these light fixtures in marfa texas if you look at
28:27this doorway steve it's just like a little like that like six oh yeah just a little bit above the
28:31header i mean the reality are these light fixtures are really old there's no wiring so we have to get
28:36these lights completely rewired get them functioning again so they're safe for the space
28:41this is the only dilemma though because we've already chose our green in here okay yeah these
28:46don't match that i can only imagine can you get someone to like powder coat these like a nice
28:52glossy cream color just just the shade you hate the color enough i don't hate that i actually love
28:58the color i kind of do too what if we wire them and hang them and then can we can
29:03run uh oh laura
29:04hey quit being a brat we're gonna form teams here oh no we're gonna get outvoted it's just the green
29:12i feel bad is because these cabinets are green it's just a lot of green i get you i get
29:17you let me see is
29:17that door the same green and for y'all that contrast too much it's a different look i feel
29:23like leaving this raw and then going sour cream it'll literally be the cherry on top man these things
29:28are cool so i'm excited about this space this feels like if we have friends and family over this is
29:33a
29:34nice little spot i love seeing how it's all coming together steve this place looks awesome
29:38leaving you with these it's a plaster you're gonna get me a cream right that's it i think that's it
29:44awesome thank you awesome i'm gonna get out of y'all see you later bye i feel like the next
29:49time
29:50we come and see this it'll be completely done
30:01i don't know if you guys can hear that noise in the distance but that's the peaceful hum of no
30:07wives or children nagging at us what oh sorry joe i didn't see you there we're here with our couple
30:14friends we wanted to show them the mountain house at this stage so that they could really
30:19appreciate the after and today i thought it'd be fun to bring in a fly fishing expert to teach the
30:24boys a few things we're excited to be here thank you for having us well it's my pleasure genuinely
30:29it's a beautiful section of river and where we are makes for really good trout habitat this is exciting
30:34man that's a special spot i keep looking you look like the top gun of i thought this was the
30:40coolest
30:40outfit on the market i told her i thought we were scuba diving i mean do i look like an
30:44idiot you
30:45look like christopher lloyd in back and future you don't look dumb you just look over prepared over
30:49prepared be overdressed and under okay all right fair enough these are waiters that i'm you can see
30:55that i'm sure there's a very thorough set of uh of waiters w-a-d-d-e-r-s waiters
31:03it's like a rancher
31:04and an astronaut had a baby i feel like i want to come in almost like slow motion like i
31:10think
31:10i'm going to start a new trend with these bad boys i feel dare i say sexy we're gonna have
31:15fun
31:16thanks for setting this up we're excited while he's doing that steve is going to show me some
31:20wood samples and i think he may have figured out a solution for matching the different colored beams
31:25that would that's like a picture perfect moment right there steve i hope it's what you wanted
31:29here's uh gorgeous on this side we have some up for you goodness so this is actually what's on the
31:35walls it's what's going to go on the walls so we've got this mill from 12 by 12 of beans
31:40from
31:41california an old steel factory they're like 90 years old i love the cracks that is like character
31:47every piece is its own thing almost every room in the house is going to have some of this i
31:51love that
31:54i brought you some stain samples oh i love all your millwork okay so i like this one we're just
32:00going to kind of go one by one i feel like this is too yellow so i'm just going to
32:04eliminate as we go
32:05i know we were originally thinking more of a natural and some of these have gotten really dark
32:10yeah i feel like you want me to hold a few up for you i mean i think i know
32:14you're good you already
32:15i feel like i'm seeing the one i really like steve had about six or seven samples i could i
32:21saw the one
32:21i wanted he kept passing them to me but i was like this is the one i'm wanting it more
32:26swiss chalet
32:27than like mountain house like lodgy so the lightness i feel like i'm gravitating towards the more natural
32:34the better these are the right colors can you take these two i'm going to hold them up i would
32:41say
32:42that right piece that's like the perfect tone so this is like our control tone the one on my left
32:48hand
32:49this is already sealed with a natural so it's changed the color a bit this is raw in my right
32:53hand and this vertical is raw when i look at the board and then your samples it's a family i
33:00definitely
33:01want that natural stain on the bottom sample typically when i do wood in a house i'll pick
33:07specific spots in this space that i really wanted a lot of wood on the walls a lot of that
33:13warmth coming
33:13in with that natural material especially because this is what you see on the outside this is how
33:19i like to get in touch with nature chip is more hands-on i like to learn by doing so
33:25we'll walk down
33:25in there oh man this does feels good and refreshing doesn't it yeah wow to me it's like yeah we'll
33:33catch
33:33fish but like where we are who cares yeah who cares that's icing on the cake right yeah
33:41when you're up to bat playing baseball do you watch the face of the bat no no you look for
33:45the ball
33:45right for sure now with casting same thing i want you to be looking where you want the fly to
33:51land
33:51before anything don't overthink it just play around a little bit look at that chip hey it's like a model
34:01remember what that felt like that was awesome there is no doubt that we're having more fun than joe
34:12steve with the red rock the reddish dark stain on the beams i'm nervous it's gonna pull too red and
34:19i like the blonde one of the things that i've always known was gonna come to a actual design
34:25dilemma was the color of the existing beams it's almost like this really saturated stain that they
34:31put on the beams and it just felt like too dark now that i've see the wood that we're using
34:37i know
34:37i'm gonna go with a natural finish i just feel like i keep butting into that contrast of the dark
34:42and
34:43the light i want to show you what we came up with to match the existing beams to the hand
34:47hewn it's
34:48really kind of creative we've got this faux painter that's been working on some samples and i think
34:52they're a perfect match if you're saying he can replicate this up there i'd almost rather it go away
35:00then highlight all of the contrast that's happening in this small space yeah well why don't i go show
35:05you what he's done i think i do want to see this job let me introduce you to chase hi
35:11hello i'm joe
35:12joe nice to meet you i can't wait to see this i can already come back here and look i
35:17brought chase
35:18in here to boat paint the original beam so that it'll blend in with our hand hewn that i'm like
35:23which
35:23one's real right how long does this take you per section per beam section five to six hours
35:31literally like yeah you can't even tell it is art we'll mix our glazes and our color palette
35:37which you see here cool that is awesome and it's just all the colors of the oak beams that we're
35:42doing
35:43and the hand humans so that little knot up there is art that's not a real no that's uh that's
35:49a painted
35:49knot right here that's a painted knot yeah i mean when you were suggesting this in my mind i was
35:54like
35:54we had this like authentic the hand-hewn beams this old oak but when i saw them in the primary
36:01i mean
36:01it's i'm blown away i can't i'm like what i didn't know which one was real and which one was
36:05fake
36:05so i think knowing that this is an option we can really start tackling it space by space chase really
36:11solved the design dilemma now i get to keep this really tonal look light wood there's not going to be
36:17this huge contrast which is really the goal oh chip from fly fish academy oh that was so awesome
36:26how much fun scale of one to ten hey a thousand here you go nailed it very coachable i was
36:32like
36:32this and then you could like see the sunlight glistening off the line heavenly and then the line
36:38kind of floats out quick how i love the dance it's such a dance i love it how are the
36:47boys doing
36:47down there they're doing great tim caught one oh what a beauty we were so proud of him do you
36:54feel
36:54healed i feel healed
37:01we've had a good time in colorado with our friends today chip and i are going to take one
37:05more look at the house before we head home steve is really pushed on the main house and even that
37:11medium cottage but this little cottage still has a ways to go i'm going to facetime ella really quick
37:17while we're in here since the cottage is her little design project i'm going to walk through it with her
37:24on the phone just so she has a sense that she's a part of this you can see though how
37:29this room
37:30was really like storage but now we got to start moving on it hi ella hi i'm in the little
37:39cottage here
37:40at the mountain house and this is me making sure i've got everything that you're wanting
37:45down so i can communicate this with steve all the paint in here is that really pretty green on the
37:52walls green on the ceilings these are the floors ella are you okay if we sand these down and just
38:00refinish them yes or is that long pause and no no i like the floors okay good okay now i
38:08want to show
38:09you the opening that you asked for they took the closet doors off look how cute ella and i have
38:15been working on this design plan i really wanted her to lead though so for me it's stepping back and
38:20where she wants help or she wants a suggestion i'll step in but i've really tried to shut my mouth
38:26look at all your cabinets and i know you wanted new hardware because this felt a little too
38:31what is that word aggressive and then in here ella just that fun floor tile
38:38uh the shower is on which is sorry about that but it works there's a lot more happening on the
38:48main
38:48cottage and the big house this one's kind of the last thing but i feel like we're moving in the
38:54right
38:54direction and i think you're gonna love it now that i know that ella's happy with the structure
38:59when i get back to waco we can really start to think about the furniture getting to create a very
39:04sweet beautiful story and this little quirky cottage is just a fun thing that i get to do
39:09with ella and i've just loved it okay love you i love you too bye ella
39:21where's old steve what else you want to show us while you've got us let's go through the reading
39:26room first
39:30in here we're going with all paint grade yep tongue and groove redoing the whole thing
39:37this will be where your new gas burner will yeah i'm excited about that little thing yeah
39:41so we saved all the old red rock when we tore this thing apart we're going to rebuild this thing
39:45and
39:45make it look whole again and take it right to the new wall sweet this will be a notebook case
39:50that
39:50we're going to do out of the same stuff on the walls and it'll be really nice it'll slide in
39:54like
39:54a piece of furniture let's go i love this little room can i just sneak through here sure now we're
39:59in
39:59the toilet room you're in the primary toilet room yeah oh this feels so good i love it
40:03i feel like we have a lot of space in this bathroom it really is crazy closet um i love
40:10this arch in the shower i think that's so pretty for sure once we get all this reclaim wood on
40:14the
40:14walls and then the plaster and all the other elements it's gonna feel like a big warm hug
40:18exactly i'm just so excited about the direction that this project is going our little primary suite
40:25is going to be perfect for us looks great looks sharp love the beams these hand-hewn beams look really
40:31good they turned out well that's awesome right but i feel like everything is just moving along
40:37now that your mechanical's all installed we're getting to the point we can start closing walls
40:41up and that's where it's really going to change when do the windows and doors come in they're coming
40:46within 10 to 14 days they'll be on site i'd love to get those in then we get rid of
40:50all the plastic
40:50heck yeah then we can start finishing up the siding we got a lot of work on top of that
40:55well if you
40:55know your windows and doors are coming the woods here for the ceiling any major hiccup where you're
41:01like this is the only variable yeah what are you thinking the fireplace has me up at night okay because
41:07it's stuck in permitting limbo it's in zoning we have to address it now since 11 by 4 we're adding
41:13on
41:1344 square feet to the house okay we have the availability but they got to go through all of
41:18their processes to approve that 44 square feet and so that's where it's at today i checked on it
41:23yesterday i see we've got it framed we got it ready to go yeah everything else is good to go
41:28but we got
41:29to get the fireplace in because that impacts all of our stonework inside it impacts all the trim work
41:34on that wall yeah there's a lot of components that come together on that 100 so that's what keeps me
41:40up at night if you had to bet 100 bucks you think the go-aheads in a couple of days
41:43couple of weeks
41:44where are you feeling on that no in the county probably a couple weeks couple weeks the biggest
41:48variable is the fireplace upstairs and downstairs if those permits don't come through soon we might
41:55not be able to finish by first snow other than that i feel like it's smooth sailing from here but
42:00i shouldn't have said that out loud other than that it's gonna be great you're gonna jinx yourself
42:05i don't want to jinx myself but i feel like i can start seeing it when i come back i'm
42:09hoping by that
42:10point a lot of the walls will be closed in hopefully the windows will be in hopefully we'll know
42:14about the fireplace all right we'll have a seat back guys bless you see you see ya i'm excited
42:20about coming back in the next few weeks
42:28we got a lot going on so get ready to uh enter the beehives oh man well hi guys how
42:35hard to do
42:36this downstairs look at this y'all there's a lot of things happening on the main house and in the
42:43cabins did we have more candlesticks i feel like i'm the design intern joe has this ability to take
42:51something across the finish line i feel like we're gonna make it but in the meantime it's a bit of
42:56a
