The Dog House - Season 8 Episode 100 - Special Christmas Special
Transcript
00:01In a quiet corner of the English countryside, there's a magical place where the spirit of
00:14Christmas is all about woofs and walkies and even the grumpiest Grinch can't help but smile.
00:27There's nothing better than having a dog at Christmastime.
00:31I'm not really Santa.
00:33Dogs definitely love Christmas as much as we do.
00:35We're going to find you at home for Christmas.
00:37Where a dedicated team try to find every dog a new family.
00:42Merry Christmas!
00:44Are we feeling festive?
00:45Yay!
00:48Oh my God.
00:50Oh, look.
00:52Oh, that was amazing.
00:58This could be the start of a really beautiful relationship.
01:02This year, we're all invited to some very furry festivities.
01:07All ready for Christmas!
01:09As Wood Green's dogs steal the hearts of a new set of owners.
01:14All they want for Christmas is someone to love and to love them in return.
01:28Come on then, let's find Father Christmas.
01:32Do you think the dogs notice?
01:34Everyone's a bit giddy at Christmas, so I think the dogs feed off that and they're probably
01:37like, woohoo!
01:39My dogs have a stocking every year.
01:41I'm 27 years old and I still wake my mum up at 6am.
01:45Look what Santa's got you!
01:48I get lasagna on Christmas Day, much to the horror of my family.
01:52In fact, my dad, Niamh, refusing to come round for Christmas dinner.
01:59Christmas Day gets to that point and it's like you can even watch a film, you can have a two
02:04-hour bath.
02:05The bells ring out of Christmas!
02:11This is going to make your Christmas, isn't it?
02:13Yes!
02:14All right, ready?
02:15Three, two, one.
02:17That was a fish!
02:18What is a dog that sneezes?
02:24Chihuahua!
02:25What do you call a magician's dog?
02:28A labracadabra dog.
02:31Hoping Santa is really going to slay this year is the Johal family.
02:36Merry Christmas!
02:37Merry Christmas!
02:39Morning!
02:39The party's arrived!
02:40Oh, my God!
02:42So, are we feeling festive?
02:43Yay!
02:44There we go!
02:46So, talk to me about your Christmas Day.
02:48Run me through your day.
02:49We wake up and we get presents.
02:51We go downstairs for presents first.
02:52Two presents each.
02:54Do we have Christmas songs on?
02:56Oh, yes.
02:56Bit of caroling?
02:58Well, it wasn't so much caroling, cattle wobbling.
03:00Yeah.
03:02We're not actually Christian, but we still love Christmas.
03:08We're all Sikh.
03:09That's our religion.
03:10Really, Christmas is not our thing.
03:12Huh?
03:14I didn't know that Sikhs didn't celebrate Christmas.
03:17We embrace everything.
03:18We'll take everything on board and do all of it,
03:21pick and choose the nice bits that we like.
03:23Do you want the lights on?
03:27Best Christmas jumper ever.
03:30First weekend of December, the Christmas tree arrives,
03:32then it's full steam ahead.
03:34Then boom.
03:34Then we're in Christmas mode.
03:36Tinsel?
03:36Tinsel's a bit tacky.
03:37Oh!
03:38Shots fired!
03:39Not on my tree!
03:41Hide the tinsel!
03:43I try to find new decorations every year,
03:45but since a certain department's door closed down,
03:49my life is very sad.
03:51R.I.P. dead moves.
03:53We weren't going to name things!
03:57So, obviously, are you for a dog?
03:59Yes, we are.
04:00Yeah?
04:00Potentially.
04:01Dad, stop being so negative.
04:03Is he normally like this?
04:05Yes!
04:06Oh!
04:08Right, listen, I don't think we should keep you waiting any longer.
04:11So, make yourself something first,
04:13someone will come down and have a chat with you.
04:18Good boy!
04:20What would you like for Christmas?
04:27Good morning, Euphriticalia with green.
04:30Because I have a dog on the street.
04:33His body looks way too thin.
04:37She's just really submissive and petrified.
04:41We get stray dogs in all year round.
04:43It seems more sad when they come in at Christmas,
04:46because Christmas is a time of goodwill
04:48and they should be being loved,
04:51not abandoned out on the streets.
04:55Some people find Christmas time really stressful
05:00and maybe sometimes people just can't cope
05:03and the dogs are the ones that pay the price.
05:11Hiya.
05:14A member of the public called our kennels
05:16and said that they'd found a pair of dogs tied to a post
05:20in an alleyway.
05:23I popped down to come and pick them up.
05:26Can't find any microchips.
05:27OK.
05:27That's where we are now.
05:29The one on the right here looks pretty scared.
05:33We'll take them down to the kennels.
05:35Cool. No problem.
05:36Do you want picking up?
05:44Let's go.
05:46Good.
05:47Let's go.
05:48Come on then.
05:48Come on then.
05:54Yeah.
05:55I know, it's a bit worrying.
05:57When we get stray or abandoned dogs come in,
06:00one of the first things we do is we give them a name.
06:03Jenny, this black one, she seems quite happy.
06:07Doria thinks a little bit more nervous.
06:09She's been panting a bit, kind of pasting the kennel.
06:11They're a little bit dirty and a bit matted some places.
06:16A little bit skinnier there, aren't you lady?
06:19But we can definitely get you looking better, can't we?
06:22If we get a pair of dogs, we can't just take for granted
06:26that those dogs are best of friends.
06:28So we have got to monitor them quite closely
06:30so that we can assess their needs going forward.
06:34Good girls.
06:35Yeah, we'll leave them to settle in now.
06:37Well done, ladies.
06:48Hello.
06:49How are you?
06:50Merry Christmas.
06:52Merry Christmas.
06:52Merry Christmas.
06:53I like your jumper.
06:54I'm Angel now.
06:55And I'm Sue.
06:56Hi, Sue.
06:57Hi, Angel.
06:58Hello.
06:58Jessie.
06:59I'm Paminda.
06:59I'm Mia.
07:00Mia.
07:01I'm Arjun.
07:02Arjun.
07:03And I'm Keira.
07:04Smiles all round, I see.
07:06Yeah.
07:07Have you as a family had a dog before?
07:09No.
07:10No.
07:10They've had dogs.
07:1296, I got a pedigree Rottweiler, Leon.
07:17I picked him out from the litter.
07:19So I brought him home in like a shoe box.
07:21This was one of the earlier pictures we had Leon and I taken.
07:25They just had this great bond.
07:27You know, he made me, I made him, and we just kind of were the same.
07:32Losing him was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.
07:36What was Leon like?
07:38Don't stop.
07:39Dan will cry, don't stop.
07:41He'll cry.
07:42It spoiled me for other dogs.
07:44Does that make sense?
07:45Totally.
07:46OK, why have you decided that now's the time for a dog?
07:50Because I've been wearing them down for eight years and they finally said yes.
07:54Every Christmas.
07:56My Christmas is dog clothes, dog toys.
07:59Subtle hints like that.
08:01Keira's commitment is quite impressive.
08:05So I've been trying to put off Keira, having a dog.
08:08Trying to protect her from that pain that comes from when you have to say goodbye.
08:14Maybe it's, you know, the dad in me to protect her.
08:17Maybe it's the Rottweiler in me trying to protect my daughter.
08:21What breeds are you open to?
08:24I like Hocker Spaniels and breeds like that.
08:28Because then you can do agility with them.
08:30They like playing fetch, you can train them, do lots of things.
08:32And they're like a good size.
08:34OK.
08:35So quite a clever dog then we're looking for.
08:37OK, yeah.
08:37So we need intelligence.
08:38Yes.
08:39Fizzy energy.
08:40Fizzy.
08:41Fizzy energy.
08:42Fun, playful, hyper.
08:44Hyper is a stretch.
08:45Yeah.
08:48So you want a fun buddy, basically, don't you?
08:52Right, let's see if we can make your Christmas.
08:54See you in a minute.
09:00Family of five.
09:02They're looking for something in the region of perhaps a spaniel size.
09:09So there's a little mushy.
09:13You know what you're getting with a three-year-old, don't you?
09:16Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:17Do you think Milo?
09:19He's super fun.
09:21Or Luna.
09:23Mmm.
09:25She's a labradoodle so I think that's going to really match well
09:29with what Kira's looking for, that spaniel-y energy.
09:34She's not enjoying life in kennels.
09:37She's just gone really withdrawn.
09:39I've seen the other side to her, her personality.
09:43She's cheeky, fizzy, funny.
09:45Trick training.
09:46That's brilliant in dogs who are a little bit more nervous.
09:49So if that's something that Kira is looking to do,
09:53I think that will really, really help Luna settle into a home.
09:58I think she's a good little match.
09:59I just don't think first impressions are going to be great.
10:07OK, so we have found you the very pretty Labradoodle.
10:15Oh!
10:15Oh, my goodness!
10:17Oh, my God!
10:18Dad, say yes.
10:22Her name is Luna.
10:24Now, Luna's having a really hard time here in kennels
10:29and she's gone into a shell and done this.
10:33She may struggle initially.
10:36So, in order not to overwhelm her,
10:41what we'd like to do is start with you two.
10:46It's essentially got the experience.
10:48And it's your dog.
10:50Yeah?
10:51Would you like to meet Luna?
10:52Absolutely.
10:53So, does Kira and I get to decide whether they get to meet the dog?
10:56Oh!
10:58I'm going to take Dad and Kira.
10:59You lead the way, Kira.
11:01Mum, it's going to be so cute!
11:03And her name is Luna!
11:05Merry Christmas, Luna!
11:07Come on, then.
11:09Luna's not always happy and goofy.
11:12With Luna's previous home,
11:14she wasn't able to go out of the house much
11:16and she didn't get many of the opportunities
11:18that sort of a young puppy would normally get,
11:20which has resulted in her becoming more nervous
11:22and timid of new things.
11:25We just need someone to be really patient with her
11:27and give her the time and the space
11:29to come out of her shell on her own terms.
11:33When you're in her club,
11:34she'll be your best friend forever.
11:36I'm excited!
11:38Find you a new home!
11:40Good girl!
11:44Do you like the idea of the name Luna?
11:46Yeah, I do.
11:48I don't think there's anyone who's done her homework
11:50more than Kira has.
11:52She's clued up on dogs,
11:54she knows all the breeds,
11:55she's got a lot of compassion.
11:56Oh, my God, it's so cute!
12:00I took her to class.
12:01She couldn't stop smiling everywhere she looked
12:04because there's just dogs everywhere.
12:05She came back so happy.
12:08Ooh!
12:11She could be our dog.
12:13I want to try and get my dog
12:15to be able to do lots of tricks.
12:17You're teaching this dog something,
12:19you know, you're showing this dog
12:21that, you know, you can help it do stuff.
12:24I'm helping the dog learn something new.
12:27Be nice and brave.
12:29She's looking all right.
12:32Positive mental attitude suit, come on!
12:34We'll put it there so we could watch it like that.
12:39Eight years in the waiting.
12:40Eight years, Dad.
12:42Eight years.
12:43Good girl.
12:43Be brave!
12:47Oh, my God.
12:56You're my ex-act!
12:58Christmas Zoomies!
13:00People dancing all night long
13:04Time for all those presents.
13:06And exchanging kisses
13:08What film should we watch this year?
13:09Time for singing
13:11Oh, look at all that, especially a winner.
13:14Oh, great Christmas gifts!
13:17This is Luna.
13:18Good girl.
13:19She can be a little bit nervous to start with.
13:22Oh, my God.
13:23Plucking up the courage to meet Keira and her dad, Jessie,
13:26is one-year-old labradoodle, Luna.
13:29Yeah.
13:30I think Luna, the name, suits her.
13:31It does, doesn't it?
13:34Oh, my God!
13:35She's so cute!
13:38Keira doesn't control herself.
13:41I'll give you her lead, just so she doesn't try and follow me out.
13:44It'll be okay.
13:50Come here. What's this?
13:56So this is what I was worried about.
13:58She's gone all frightened now.
14:01Erm...
14:02Body's gone all tense.
14:03The tail's tucked.
14:05She's not feeling relaxed.
14:10Oh, you're very nervous, aren't you, darling?
14:17How sad that she's so upset.
14:24What's this?
14:27Come here.
14:32It's okay.
14:35Yeah, she's not interested.
14:37I kind of feel bad.
14:50I've got some mistletoe, like...
14:53..underneath the mistletoe.
14:55That's a hard pass.
14:59I think there's no mistletoe needed that.
15:01Are you trying to wheel your hair back in now, are you?
15:04Getting your little underbite out.
15:05That's not happening, sister.
15:10Oh, thank you.
15:11You knew what that meant.
15:15Oh, yay!
15:17Yay!
15:18I've got Christmas kisses!
15:20Yay!
15:23Chico?
15:25Don't know what to expect.
15:27It's like blind date, but for doggies.
15:30American Bulldog Chico is looking for a big, slobbery Christmas kiss.
15:35People tell him he's handsome, and then he smiles back at them as if to say,
15:39yes, I know I am.
15:40He just takes it all in. He loves it.
15:43It's like butter wouldn't melt in his mouth.
15:47Chaperoned by devoted dog dads Darren and Alan.
15:51Merry Christmas!
15:52Merry Christmas!
15:54That's Chico.
15:55Oh, my God. You're gorgeous, ain't you?
15:57He's just cheeky, and that's what he gets called.
16:00Chica Chico?
16:00Chica Chico.
16:01Chica Chico! I love that!
16:04Come for a pal, or is it a date?
16:06Well, I think it might be a date.
16:08He's had a bath and everything.
16:10I'm going to say, has he got a bit of that doggy aftershave on?
16:12Black cherry.
16:13Black cherry.
16:14Apparently that's the one that does it.
16:16I need to have a sniff of him.
16:18And I say hello.
16:21Oh, delicious.
16:23Do you smell lovely?
16:25Do you reckon he kisses on for a state?
16:26He goes mental when he meets other dogs.
16:28Does he?
16:29Yeah.
16:30Well, I'll be honest with you, he smells better than most of men that I've met.
16:33So I think he's got a shot here.
16:39You're enough.
16:40You're a good girl.
16:41You OK?
16:45Chica's a bit distraught.
16:46No, she's not.
16:47She's all right.
16:47Look at Chica's face.
16:49Hello.
16:50What's this?
16:55Yeah, do you smell the trees?
17:04Nothing's going to change until somebody has at least got hold of the lead,
17:09because then there's that connection.
17:12So I want this to work for her.
17:15Good girl, Luna.
17:16Good girl.
17:19I think now is the right time for her to have a dog.
17:22She's definitely matured enough.
17:24She's just going to get so much out of it,
17:26because she'll put everything into the dog,
17:29whether it's love, whether it's enjoyment.
17:32It'll help her grow as a person.
17:34And if she has half of what Leon and I had,
17:38I'll be over the moon.
17:43Hi.
17:45Come in.
17:46Come here.
17:47Good girl.
17:55It's okay.
17:57It's okay.
17:59It's okay.
18:00Good girl.
18:01Good girl.
18:03Go on, Kira.
18:25This little girl is absolutely amazing.
18:33Yeah.
18:34Good girl, Luna. Good girl.
18:38The movement is important. You are just out together.
18:42It's been a long time. Yeah, she's having a good sniff.
18:45You're just there.
18:47She's then like, oh, we had a good time, didn't we?
18:50Walk a little bit faster.
18:51She's going to get confident. She sees you more confident.
18:54Good girl, we can do it. Good girl.
18:57Daddy's right. Yay!
18:59You know what they do in the crafts when they show the audience?
19:02Come on, then. Like they do at crafts.
19:04Like they do at crafts.
19:07Come on. Come on.
19:09That's it.
19:11Yay!
19:16Good girl.
19:18She's snuggled into her.
19:20I think we're going to get a belly rub.
19:22Please. Oh, come on.
19:25Come on. Oh, we're going to have it.
19:27Hi.
19:29Look, there it is, there it is, there it is.
19:31Good girl. Good girl.
19:35Good girl.
19:37Good girl.
19:38Oh, my goodness. Yay!
19:41There you go. Now go get it.
19:43She's that plate bowing. Great as you are.
19:46Yes!
19:48He's bounding all over the place. Look at her.
19:52She's so cute.
19:54Oh, this could be the start of a really beautiful relationship.
19:58Oh, my God, isn't it just?
19:59That was huge.
20:01Good girl.
20:03It's just me.
20:05She's on the bench between them.
20:07Oh, my God.
20:09Lulu, Lulu, Lulu.
20:10I kind of felt victorious.
20:12I'd, er...
20:13I'd won the trust of this little dog.
20:17When I could see the connections and the little sparks between Luna and Kira, it was brilliant.
20:25The only reservation is she's not going to just come in and all of a sudden be everybody's friendly dog.
20:30We've got to make sure that we fit Luna as well, what she needs.
20:35I like Luna.
20:36I think we should adopt her.
20:39I second that.
20:39That's up to them.
20:41I also think we should adopt her.
20:43I second that.
20:45There's two votes.
20:46Anyone else?
20:51You're really rocking the Christmas tutu.
20:59Oh, Chico time!
21:02If I move over...
21:04Oh, I like that you have to move over to one side.
21:06That's what happens at home.
21:08So I'll be sat on the couch, really comfortable, and he'll just go...
21:12..stare at me, and sometimes I'll end up on the floor.
21:15What's he looking for, the sister, a girlfriend?
21:18He's thinking girlfriend.
21:21Character or looks?
21:23Chico?
21:23I think he wants both.
21:25I'd say someone that can put him in his place when he's getting too in their face.
21:29He had a sister, Holly, quite dominant over him and stuff as well, so...
21:34Yeah.
21:34He knew his position.
21:36So this is Holly and Chico on Christmas Day.
21:42So Holly was a diva.
21:44Very stroppy, very demanding.
21:47Chico and Holly, they seem to complement each other.
21:49She brought out the best in him and him in her as well.
21:55We lost her last October.
21:57Oh, I'm sorry.
21:58She was a Dorset all-time bulldog.
22:01Sounds like she was a very big personality in his life.
22:06It's affected him.
22:08It's heartbreaking, isn't it, when he makes that little sound?
22:12So are you looking for another bulldog or are you open to other breeds?
22:17I'm definitely a big bulldog fan.
22:19Bulldogs are the ones I look at first.
22:21OK.
22:22We'll go and work on it.
22:22See you soon.
22:25Good boy.
22:26Get me a doggy.
22:27Good boy.
22:30Prance like Prancer.
22:32Need some antlers and then you'll be a reindeer.
22:35We'll be all right.
22:37Good girl.
22:39After arriving together as strays, the Woodgreen team have been assessing Jenny and Dory's behaviour.
22:47We're seeing more reactivity from both of them, kind of feeding off of each other.
22:53Good girl. What's in here?
22:54So, we do think splitting them is going to be better for both of them.
22:58We'll get you settled.
23:00So, although it is initially sad, when you know, kind of, that they're going to move forward a lot quicker
23:05apart, that does make it a little bit easier.
23:08I think we'll be absolutely fine.
23:10Good girl.
23:12Well done.
23:14See you later.
23:18Good girl, Jenny.
23:23Hello.
23:24Hello.
23:24Hello.
23:26I would feel like I've let you down if I didn't tell you that we do have a bulldog.
23:35Yeah.
23:37You know, she would be very much a close replica to the dog that you've lost.
23:42She's six years old, very affectionate, and she'd be a great dog for Chico.
23:47And her name is Queen.
23:49My God.
23:51You've gone on a date, Chico.
23:55Queen is definitely the sassy Queen.
23:58Definitely got a swagger going on.
24:00She kind of gives that side eye, but it's like a regal, yeah, I know that I'm good.
24:08Queen has not been lucky in love so far.
24:11You just want to sit there and look gorgeous.
24:14Yeah.
24:15It's really hard for Queen to be in kennels because she is so affectionate.
24:21She's just so lovable. How can you not love this little face?
24:25Think this will be your time to shine?
24:39What song is guaranteed to get your dog's attention this time here?
24:45I have no idea.
24:48Oh Christmas Treat.
24:50Oh my God, that's terrible.
24:55Now you're ready for your date, Chico.
24:57She's called Queen, so you need to treat her like one.
25:04If we got a dog ready for Christmas this year, it would be the best present for Chico.
25:11Since Holly went, he looks so sad.
25:15I know that he misses her because when I take him out, he'll be all bubbly and excited to meet
25:21other dogs.
25:22And then when he gets home, he just looks lonely.
25:26I really think that him getting a new partner will bring out the giddiness and all the things that we
25:32love about him.
25:37You're watching the dog now, aren't you? You know what's coming.
25:40This is a really big day, exciting day for him.
25:50This is Queen.
25:52Oh, how beautiful is Queen?
25:57Oh, oh.
25:58Swaps.
26:00That's a nice play bow.
26:01Oh, he likes her.
26:04And she's play bowing back, which is lovely.
26:08She's made a brilliant first impression.
26:10Look at her face!
26:13Oh, my goodness.
26:16Goodbye.
26:16She's definitely enjoying the interaction.
26:18Confident. Yeah, definitely.
26:22She's a really nice age, got that life experience, so she knows how to handle herself.
26:29Goodbye.
26:32This is brilliant, isn't it? This is exactly what we wanted to see from them.
26:36Goodbye.
26:40What do you think we should have for Christmas dinner this year?
26:43Fillet steak.
26:44Oh, don't you want turkey and, like, pigs in blankets?
26:47I can take it or leave it.
26:50It's supposed to be mistletoe.
26:52We're going to have a little kiss under the mistletoe.
27:00We can't have pigs in blankets with fillet steak, can't we?
27:04Ooh, you can.
27:06Bringing the festive cheer.
27:08Tracy.
27:08Merry Christmas.
27:09Merry Christmas.
27:11And her husband, Rick.
27:13I love your hat.
27:15It's a Christmas pudding, is it?
27:16It is.
27:17And where's your Christmas hat?
27:18I don't wear a Christmas hat.
27:19I'll try.
27:20Get him in some antlers.
27:25Are you going to go with the hat, Rick?
27:31Look at that.
27:32Stunning.
27:33Gizzle.
27:34Hoo, hoo, hoo.
27:35Bah humbug.
27:36Bah humbug.
27:36Is this all the front?
27:37Are you really, really Christmas here?
27:39Is that what's going on?
27:42I get proper into the Christmas spirit, driving, singing.
27:48I need to have a bit of Mariah.
27:50Really?
27:51From my youth.
27:52No.
27:53No?
27:53No.
27:55We have good banter together and, you know, we've been together like 20 odd years.
28:01Was it love at first sight?
28:02I think it was for you, wasn't it, Rick?
28:04Sorry, you pursued me.
28:06You pursued him?
28:07Yes.
28:07I did not.
28:08We worked at the same place.
28:10And you followed him?
28:10Yes.
28:10So it was my job to get properties ready for new tenants.
28:14He was a tradesman.
28:16Everyone knew Rick.
28:18She followed me everywhere.
28:19I did not.
28:19Was there a chat up line in there?
28:21Was it literally, why are you following me?
28:24Yeah.
28:30Chico wants to be your friend.
28:33Hello, you.
28:34How are you doing?
28:36Oh.
28:36Chico.
28:37Oh, he loves her.
28:38Maybe a little bit too much.
28:41Chill out.
28:45Just to tell him he's been a bit too intense.
28:49And just to back off a little bit.
28:51That's what he needs, though.
28:52Yeah.
28:52He does need a lady to tell him off.
28:55It's just a little bit too OTT on a first date.
28:57He's not very good at playing it cool, is he?
28:59No.
29:00Chico, that's a bit too much.
29:03Oh, OK.
29:04All right.
29:05You know, she's just asserting some authority, isn't she?
29:08He likes to be controlled.
29:10Yeah.
29:10That's what he's used to.
29:11Yeah.
29:15She's getting a little bit fed up now, isn't she?
29:17Yeah.
29:17Come on, you come over here, have a little break from him.
29:20Just take this jumper off.
29:23You can see how desperate he is to make friends.
29:25Yeah, he just wants to be friends.
29:27Yeah.
29:30He's the softest dog.
29:32He needs this.
29:32He needs to have another dog there that can bring the best of him.
29:38Put a smile on his face.
29:41You need to keep your cool, Chico.
29:43He needs to play a bit of hard to get.
29:45He's too eager.
29:46What do you think of Queen?
29:48She's a stunner.
29:49She is.
29:49And she's such a character, isn't she?
29:51Got a swabber all over his face.
29:53Oh, lovely.
29:53Yeah, she loves the ears.
29:56How are you doing the big tickles?
29:58Is that what you want?
29:59I think they really like her.
30:01And they desperately want this to work.
30:04It's whether Chico's going to be too much for her.
30:07Who's Chico?
30:08Are you more relaxed now?
30:10This is so lovely to see that they're just happy to be around each other.
30:13Just happy to chill.
30:14Are you turning on the cuteness even more now?
30:16Yes.
30:17Yeah, you are.
30:20You be friends.
30:21Yeah?
30:22Be friends.
30:22We will go out for a walk and see how they get on.
30:30Come on, Queen.
30:32When Chico was getting told off by Queen, she wasn't subtle with it.
30:37It was, right, that's enough.
30:39You get a treat when you don't bark at Chico.
30:42We want to take a little think about it.
30:45I just want to make sure that it is the right one
30:48and we're making the right choice for him as well.
30:51It feels a bit weird that we're on the date with them.
30:53I know.
30:59Have you considered what type of dog you might be looking for?
31:03No.
31:05I love all dogs.
31:07My issue is how the dog would cope with the wheelchair.
31:13Right, OK.
31:14Unfortunately, Rick had a freak accident.
31:19I fell off the table.
31:22Yeah.
31:22And paralysed from the chest down.
31:26So sorry to hear that.
31:29I was round the next door neighbours and I just happened to be in their garden.
31:35A nice sunny day to see my friend.
31:37Maybank holiday, wasn't it?
31:39Yeah, sitting on their garden table, just swigging my legs and then I've had a coughing fit.
31:51Blacked out and fell off the table, gone straight head into the floor and I was instantly paralysed.
32:02I couldn't move anything.
32:10It's been a real...
32:12Tough.
32:13It's been tough, yeah.
32:15It's been a tough time.
32:15I'm just grateful that we've got him.
32:20We've still got his cheekiness and his charm.
32:22Still the same person, it's just that I can't walk.
32:26No.
32:28So all four limbs on Rick are affected.
32:32His spinal cord was just really badly bruised.
32:35When I was on the ward, I moved my big tail on my left foot and I was like, wow.
32:42It's been 11 months.
32:44He went through lots of physio.
32:46I moved both arms, you know, but I can't do a lot of else though, can I?
32:52Not at the moment.
32:53Not at the moment.
32:56I miss a cuddle.
32:59And it's something that we're working on, isn't it, with like physio.
33:02So he can put his arm around me.
33:04Yeah.
33:06But having a dog snuggle up to you.
33:09Do I have some sofa time with the dog?
33:11You happy with him up on the furniture?
33:13Absolutely.
33:13Oh, yeah.
33:14Up on the furniture.
33:15It'll be spoiled.
33:17I can tell.
33:18It'll be spoiled.
33:20Age bracket.
33:22I'd like a younger dog, if possible.
33:25So we could spend more time with it.
33:27So we could spend more time with it, yeah.
33:28Yeah.
33:29We're going to go and have a look.
33:32Oh, Rick.
33:37Oh, right.
33:38So we have just met Tracy and Rick.
33:42Mm-hmm.
33:43Tracy and Rick.
33:44What are they looking for?
33:46Temperament's got to be the main aspect because Rick's in a wheelchair.
33:50He had an accident.
33:51I'm wondering about Jenny.
33:55Did you see that?
33:57Jenny came in with Dory.
34:01They've been doing really well now that they're separate.
34:05Jenny, she's really affectionate and she just loves a cuddle.
34:09She'll lean into you for attention.
34:11She's really, really sweet.
34:14She's ridiculous.
34:16She's really ready for her new home and ready to bring some Christmas joy into someone's lives
34:21who might have lost a bit of their spark.
34:23Come on.
34:27Is that a heartbeat I can hear?
34:29Yeah, my gosh, guys.
34:32We've had a look.
34:35We've found one that we really like.
34:38It's a little girl called Jenny.
34:40Jenny.
34:41She's approximately two.
34:43OK.
34:44So it's a nice age.
34:44Perfect.
34:45Yeah.
34:46She's unique.
34:47OK.
34:48And I think that she'll turn heads.
34:51Is she the little dog?
34:52She's no chihuahua.
34:54Right.
34:55Don't worry.
34:56Can't do that to your street cred.
34:58No, no, no.
35:00She loves to have a fuss and snuggle.
35:03Yeah.
35:04You're thinking, well, why is she here?
35:07She had a tough time.
35:09She was found tied to a tree.
35:12And was brought into us to look after and find a new life.
35:18So here we are.
35:22Want to meet her?
35:23Let's go and meet Jenny.
35:24Yeah?
35:25Yeah.
35:25Awesome.
35:28Are you excited?
35:30We're going to meet some new people.
35:37We're going to meet Jenny.
35:38Hey.
35:40Wow.
35:40Yeah, Jenny.
35:42Since my accident, I can't do anything for myself much.
35:51The current terms of it has been hard.
35:53I'm not sure how you do, if I'm honest.
35:59You know what I mean?
36:01One minute you're alright, the next minute you're not.
36:04A little lip there, I think.
36:07This was our wedding anniversary.
36:10I think our 18th.
36:11It's very difficult seeing old photographs of us.
36:15Rick was always the loudest guy in the room.
36:22Everything has changed.
36:24Yeah.
36:25Apart from me and you.
36:27Yeah.
36:28That's still, that's still just the same.
36:33A bit of a lot of swathing us out.
36:38Some things you say, honestly, are not weird.
36:42Why?
36:47At the moment, with Rick, he's very withdrawn.
36:51We've got a very diluted version of Rick.
36:56And I want to get some of that old Rick back.
37:02I can't believe someone left her tied to a tree.
37:07So sad.
37:12Rick's mood when he's around dogs just changes.
37:15His little face lights up.
37:18And, er, it's just a joy.
37:21With a dog, Rick's confidence will grow.
37:25Seeing Rick happy is just everything, to me.
37:34Is it his house?
37:43Shall we get your Christmas dinner?
37:45Do you want some sausages?
37:47Pigs in blankets?
37:50Hello.
37:51This is Jenny.
37:53She's really affectionate and she loves treats.
37:56OK? I'm going to leave you to it.
37:58You're welcome.
38:00Hi, Jenny.
38:04I love her.
38:06Oh, did he just say, I love her?
38:08Did he just say that?
38:09He did, yeah.
38:10Yeah, he did.
38:11Oh, my God.
38:13Hi, little girl.
38:14Where you going?
38:17Oh, shall I find you a treat?
38:20Jenny.
38:22Hi.
38:24Hi.
38:26Hello.
38:27I'm delighted, but obviously, we've got to see what she thinks of Rick.
38:30Yeah, it's early days, isn't it?
38:32Yeah.
38:32Because he's not in a position to offer a hand or give her a treat.
38:37Good girl.
38:39Jenny, who's this?
38:42This might be your daddy.
38:45Jenny!
38:48Jenny!
38:51It's almost like she's unsure about Rick just sitting in the chair.
38:58What's this?
38:59What about the ball?
39:01The dog's primary source of communication is body language, so they're watching our movements all of the time.
39:08And, obviously, Rick can't move his body.
39:14You look.
39:15It's hard for her to work out.
39:17No.
39:18No?
39:21The only thing is, like, is whether she takes the arts.
39:23I think she's beautiful.
39:25Come on, then.
39:26Come on, little girl.
39:29Let's go and see Rick.
39:31I would say Tracer's was an angel sent down to save me.
39:36She's wonderful.
39:38Let's go and see Rick.
39:44And I wish I could do the same for her as she does for me.
39:48For her to be happy.
40:02Do you like a snuggle?
40:03I like a snuggle, too.
40:06See, that's the type of cuddle she wants.
40:13Come on.
40:15Come on.
40:16Good girl.
40:17Come on, Nick.
40:18Let's go and see Rick.
40:19Come on.
40:21Come on, baby.
40:32Come on.
40:33Come on.
40:34Come on.
40:35Come on.
40:36I would really love to see her get up to Rick's height on that sofa.
40:40Yeah.
40:40Come.
40:40Come.
40:42Come.
40:42Come.
40:44What's this?
40:46What's this?
40:46What's this?
40:47What's this, Jenny?
40:48What's this?
40:49Come on, girl.
40:51I just want the dog to accept us.
40:54That would be the start of a happy end to a sad, difficult time that we've had.
41:03Oh, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum.
41:05Mmm.
41:06Oh, Jenny.
41:08Oh, come on, Jenny.
41:11Please.
41:12Please.
41:12Come.
41:13Come on.
41:14Up.
41:15Yeah.
41:16Yes.
41:18Well done, Jenny.
41:21Yeah.
41:30Yeah.
41:33Yeah.
41:36Yeah.
41:38Good girl.
41:42I think she's adorable.
41:43I think she is, too.
41:47I think she is, too.
41:55I didn't have any expectations to walk away with a dog.
41:59We were still thinking about the dog.
42:01Is our life going to support a dog?
42:03You can either just say flat out no forever, or you can just gracefully give in.
42:10Luna.
42:11Come on, honey.
42:12Say hello.
42:15Luna is my little bestie.
42:17Spin.
42:18She's so clever.
42:20Good girl.
42:20Fist bump.
42:21She knows so many tricks now, and her confidence has grown so much.
42:27Come on.
42:28Come here.
42:29Luna loves him.
42:30She's always trying to cuddle up next to him.
42:32Good girl.
42:33Oh, you like that.
42:34The connection that I wanted Keira to have with her dog is there.
42:38Because it's going to be her dog.
42:40It wasn't going to be mine.
42:42Now I have her, it's so much better.
42:45I think she feels completely loved and safe here.
42:49She's literally everything I wanted in her dog.
42:51Everything.
42:53She can't put dog on her Christmas list because she's already got a dog.
42:56No, no, she's already talking about getting another one.
42:58Oh, yeah, she does want one.
42:59We've got one, can't we just have two?
43:02I shouldn't have taken her to Crofts.
43:09There you go.
43:10Smelling beautiful.
43:12I wanted Chico to have a new friend.
43:15I just wanted that spark back with him.
43:17That he'd have somebody else that he could bounce off.
43:19To give him and you Lisa life.
43:22I thought Queen was adorable.
43:24But she instantly put him in his place.
43:27We both had sort of reservations around if she'd keep up with him.
43:33We had a long talk about it.
43:34And then in the end, we decided not to.
43:40However, we did find him a friend.
43:44Tammy.
43:44Come here.
43:46Good girl.
43:47Hello.
43:48Hello.
43:49We came across Tammy in our local dog rescue centre.
43:53She was a stray and now she's part of the family.
43:57She's a little softy.
43:58They give each other kisses.
44:01And they're just really good together I think.
44:04Good boy.
44:05Good girl.
44:07And her and Chico spend all their time chasing each other.
44:10Which is what we wanted.
44:11Go.
44:11Go on then.
44:13You tired now Jiki.
44:15Chico's definitely a lot more content.
44:17He's just happier in himself again.
44:19But he's also, it's not like he's obsessed with her either.
44:23He can very much let her go and do her own thing.
44:25But he seems more content that she's in the house.
44:27Definitely Chico time again.
44:30Lock on together.
44:37Before we could even consider taking Jenny, we had to do lots of thinking.
44:41It was a really big decision that we had to make really.
44:46Which took all of about 40 seconds.
44:53So Jenny is now named Dottie.
44:57Dottie!
45:00She's fantastic.
45:01I absolutely worship her little paws that touch the ground.
45:04That's it.
45:06Love at first sight.
45:07Like totally.
45:09Dottie's coming out of her shell now.
45:11Oh, she certainly is.
45:13Mmm, Dottie!
45:15She's very mischievous.
45:17She had the builder's lunch away.
45:20Dottie Westies!
45:24Don't like Mr Santa, Dottie, do you?
45:27Like me?
45:28A bar humbug.
45:32Good girl!
45:33You do use your arms more to try and stroke her, don't you?
45:37Yeah, yeah.
45:38Right, Dottie.
45:40That's amazing.
45:42Yeah!
