00:00NFL news and notes right here on a Monday morning.
00:02Why?
00:02Because the NFL never sleeps here.
00:04We got to keep you updated on all the hottest topics there throughout the NFL landscape
00:07as we come up on an important time of year.
00:09Combine season is here, then free agency, and you're going to have the NFL draft
00:13and the way you go to OTAs and all that good stuff here that we love.
00:17Before you know it, you'll be watching some action and training camp into the preseason.
00:22Then on that opening Thursday night, that will include the Seattle Seahawks,
00:26the world champions of the NFL.
00:28But if we get to some of those news and notes, that sometimes isn't of the cheery edition here.
00:33NFLPA issues a statement following the passing of Vikings wide receiver Rondell Moore, 25,
00:38urging union members to check on their teammates and to prioritize mental health.
00:43Quote, in moments like this, we're reminded of how much our plays carry on and off of the field, Joe.
00:50Sad times when a 25-year-old man took his life here.
00:53You never know what some of these guys are thinking from time to time.
00:56And reach out and make sure you can see exactly if you can help with times.
01:00Yeah, you just, you never know what somebody is going through here, Donnie.
01:05And, you know, he had been dealing with injuries.
01:08It just, you know, it just took its toll on him trying to work his way back.
01:15And it's just such a shame because everybody, and I mean, everyone that's played with him or knew him,
01:21talks about just how he was there for everyone else.
01:24So it just goes to show you, you never know.
01:26Guy's putting on a, you know, putting on a face for everyone, and you just don't know what's going on.
01:31So, yeah, talk to people here.
01:34Just listen to what people have to say, that's for sure.
01:37And if you're talking to people throughout the NFL, it looks like, Joe,
01:41there's no discussions at this point by the competition committee to ban the tush push.
01:46Last year, the Packers wanted to ban it, then the Packers used to use the tush push.
01:49We're not hearing anything about safety from Sean McDermott.
01:52Well, he's been fired as a coach for the Buffalo Bills.
01:54But Buffalo had a big problem with it, then used it repeatedly in every single game with Josh Allen as
01:59the ultimate weapon.
02:00So it just seems like when the Eagles are really good at it, everybody hates it.
02:04But when everybody else gets a little bit better at it, they love it.
02:07Ah, shocker, right, the way that works here.
02:10And I just can't believe it took so long, Donnie, for everyone else to get caught up with it.
02:15And the only reason it was ever being even discussed as being eliminated was simply because defenses and teams just
02:23couldn't figure it out.
02:23But I still don't know the defenses have figured it out.
02:26But it feels like more offenses have now put it into their repertoire, which is why we're not getting any
02:33more pushback on this.
02:35Joe, a group called Bananarama in 1987 sung this song.
02:39I heard a rumor.
02:41I heard a rumor.
02:43Yeah, you get the point here.
02:44You know what that rumor is?
02:45Aaron Rodgers returning back for one more season with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
02:48Hallelujah.
02:49Or come on, man.
02:53It's a cruel summer, Donnie.
02:55It's a cruel summer.
02:55Oh, right back at it.
02:57My goodness.
02:58All the tunes.
02:59Little karate kid.
03:00I cannot believe I even knew that.
03:02That is awful.
03:03But listen, it could be a cruel summer for the Steelers if Aaron Rodgers is just like, you know what?
03:09Kind of went into my sweat box here in Arizona.
03:12Did myself a little deep, a little hiawaska.
03:15And, you know, the gods just don't want me playing anymore.
03:18And then what are you going to do at Pittsburgh?
03:20So, everyone better figure out what's going on in Pittsburgh with their quarter.
03:24You're bad enough you got McCarthy there as your head coach.
03:27But you better figure out, lock in your quarterback sooner rather than later.
03:31It's a cruel, cruel, cruel summer now that you're gone.
03:36Fantastic stuff, Joe.
03:37Bring it back to hits from 1987, which it feels like Aaron Rodgers has been playing since 1987 at this
03:42point.
03:42How about JSN?
03:44Some people might read this wrong.
03:45He says he deserves to be the highest paid wideout in the sport.
03:48Well, he actually does because it's his turn to get paid for a contract extension.
03:52And the kid is really good.
03:54He's probably going to be the highest paid wide receiver in football and maybe rightfully so.
03:58Well, there's absolutely no reason not to extend him here.
04:02I mean, I still think the big question is going to be what are they going to do with their
04:06running back situation there?
04:08Because they got a few guys that are due for a payday on that team.
04:13But the core, certainly on the defensive side, appears to be locked in, ready to go.
04:18So there are some decisions that Seattle has to make for sure.
04:22No, they do.
04:23And also understand this.
04:24When you win the world championship here, yes, those players got you there.
04:27But they get a little bit overinflated.
04:29You think you're going to win another Super Bowl without me?
04:31Or I don't even know if I should be asking for a contract.
04:33But I will since we just won the Super Bowl and you need me.
04:36Happens to every single team.
04:37But some of those guys deserve to be paid just a matter if they're going to get that franchise tag
04:41or get that long-term extension here.
04:43How about the Dallas Cowboys?
04:44They're paying their running back, Javante Williams, had a very good season last year.
04:47Three years, $24 million, $16 million in guaranteed money.
04:51They're keeping Javante in town in Dallas.
04:54Yeah, they are.
04:55And I got news for you, Donnie.
04:57I think it's a good move on their part.
04:59I really do.
05:00You need a running back.
05:02And they absolutely have a good one there.
05:05They got some other issues.
05:07They got to worry about their neighborly on the other side of the ball.
05:10But I think offensively, it's a good move there for the Cowboys.
05:14How about this one?
05:15Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, update on Travis Kelsey.
05:17Will he return next season or not?
05:19Quote, there is communication.
05:21As long as there's communication, Big Red says, I'm good at this point.
05:24I would have expected him to hang it up already.
05:28Because the one thing we know about NFL athletes, there is a timeline involved where you take some time after
05:33the season ends.
05:34The Chiefs season ended pretty early, much earlier than usual.
05:36You're probably back in the gym at this point.
05:38You're getting some workouts in to see how that body's going to react.
05:41So even though it only is February, I look for this next, what, Joe, three weeks or so?
05:46Where they need to know about who they're going to draft, who they're going to get in free agency, and
05:49what's going to take place.
05:50They need to get a commitment from Travis Kelsey.
05:52And also, if you are Travis Kelsey, you do all through the organization.
05:56Don't leave them out to drive.
05:57If they need to do tight end, let them know you're going to retire.
05:59But right now, I think that needle, Joe, pointing towards more him staying with Kansas City and playing another year
06:04for me.
06:05I think a lot of what he's waiting for, what they'll likely, is what is going to be Patrick Mahomes'
06:11timeline.
06:12Yeah.
06:12How long would he have to play?
06:14How long before Mahomes has an absolute shot at coming back next season?
06:19Or does he not?
06:20And if that's the case, well, then you'll likely know sooner rather than later.
06:24How about this?
06:25Always in the news, the NFL ticket.
06:28And for years, most people can't get dishes on their house.
06:31Therefore, you cannot get into the marketplace and watch it.
06:34Now they flip it over to YouTube, and YouTube's like, yeah, you want to pay like $1,000 a year,
06:38feels like.
06:38Go ahead and do it.
06:39But how about this?
06:40The NFL Sunday ticket case returns the court for an appeal hearing in two weeks with $14.1 billion and
06:46the current out-of-market viewing model on the line here.
06:48It always seems interesting to me how much you have to pay for that out-of-market experience here just
06:53for 16 or 17 weeks on the season.
06:55Make it easier for people to watch and just have those stupid commercials and charge more for it so everybody
07:01can be happy here.
07:01We're never happy with this, Joe.
07:03They always hold us hostage.
07:05No, they do.
07:06And listen, that goes back even further, Donnie.
07:08The old DirecTV days, too, where it was just impossible.
07:14And they've been fighting this in the courts for a long time.
07:17I mean, how would you like to be a business owner, right, own a restaurant or a bar, and then
07:22have to take out a loan in order to be able to afford the Sunday ticket?
07:26Because those prices were just absurd.
07:29So, yeah, this has been – hopefully this comes to a head here and a decision is made moving forward.
07:35But this has been hanging up in the courts for a while.
07:37Yeah, most people are like, Joe, what are you talking about?
07:39You pay the $400, you get it in?
07:40No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
07:41If you have a bar capacity that sits 300 people in here, they'll go, okay, that's 300 times 400 for
07:48the season.
07:48Like, what?
07:49I can't even afford to keep my lights on at that point.
07:51It's not like you buy one, you get to show it to everybody.
07:54It is a racket that the NFL does enjoy, gets a lot of money.
07:57It always was interesting to me.
07:58Like, let's give it to DirecTV where 95% of the country can't even get it.
08:02What kind of monopoly marketplace it is.
08:04It's just the NFL.
08:05How about this one from Yahoo Sports, Joe, predicted number one overall pick for any of those who will not
08:09throw at the combine this week.
08:11Oh, no, Joe.
08:11He's going to drop to the third round, isn't he?
08:14Yeah, no.
08:15He's already going to the Raiders.
08:17I think we all know this.
08:19Everyone needs a quarterback, and he is the only one in this draft, Donnie, that is worthy of that top
08:25pick.
08:25So, I don't think it matters what he does at this point.
08:29Except, like, just put him in bubble wrap.
08:31Say, Fernando, we're not going to see you until draft night here.
08:34Go to Cancun.
08:35Relax.
08:36Don't even work out and hurt yourself, because you're going to be the number one overall pick when it's all
08:39said and done.
08:40Whether or not he has a good chalk talk with the team or, hey, Joe, did you see him miss
08:44that slant pass here?
08:45We can't draft him now.
08:46He's number one.
08:46He's going number one.
08:48How about this story, Joe?
08:49Finally, did we get a victory here for the NCAA?
08:51Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguiar would not receive another year of NCAA eligibility after a judge denied his request for an
08:57injunction.
08:58The rule marks a win for the NCAA and could deter other players from challenging eligibility rules through state anti
09:04-traw lawsuits.
09:05Now, is he allowed, Joe, just to go to all 50 states and try a court that will actually give
09:09him an injunction so he can play, or is it over?
09:12No, it's never over with these guys.
09:14Too much money for it to be over that easily, Donnie.
