00:00Whoa!
00:02There's a lot up here.
00:03Dang!
00:04Yeah, there's a few bikes up here.
00:07I've been buying and selling vintage motorcycles for a long time.
00:11This is the British invasion right here, man.
00:13A lot of it's stuff I've never seen before.
00:15Beano is schooling us.
00:17Oh, dopey duck.
00:19I've never seen dopey duck.
00:22I can tell that Dick really loved this duck.
00:26It's like it was the 1950s and he was a kid again.
00:29How much is dopey duck?
00:30Uh, dopey's $14,000.
00:32$14,000?
00:34Well, let's go up here and see the old mine shaft.
00:38No way!
00:39We walk down into the mine shaft.
00:41There's a lot of dirt in here on the ground.
00:43It was built in 69, so it's been here a while.
00:47I think it's caving in.
00:48I'm Mike Wolfe.
00:49And I'm Frank Fretz.
00:51And we're Pickers.
00:53We travel the back roads of America looking to buy rusty gold.
00:59We make a living telling the history of America one piece at a time.
01:10Here's the deal.
01:11I like cheap hotels, but I like clean hotels.
01:14Well, you can't have everything you want.
01:15It don't matter to me.
01:16It don't matter to him.
01:17He don't care.
01:18It don't matter.
01:19Sending the boys to North Carolina.
01:20We've had a lot of luck there.
01:23Some might even say it's, uh, the home of the honey hole.
01:26Did you pack my vitamins?
01:27I packed three different kinds of vitamins.
01:29Alright, because I need the multis.
01:30Did you pack these woman bars?
01:32No, I forgot those.
01:33See you later.
01:34Bye.
01:34I forgot his vitamins.
01:36Dang it.
01:39Danielle's sending us to a guy named Dick.
01:41Apparently he's been collecting since he was a teenager,
01:43and he's got a massive collection,
01:45and he's looking to thin it out a little bit.
01:47She also said that he's highly educated
01:49and really knows his stuff.
01:51Sounds like Danielle's got us another amazing lead.
01:53This looks like an old industrial area.
01:55I think it's right up here.
01:56Here's up here.
01:57This is it.
01:58Alright.
02:01Place is open.
02:02Wow.
02:02Look at that stuff already.
02:04You can tell that this guy did a lot of architectural salvage.
02:07I mean, guys that collect that stuff have a different eye,
02:09a very creative eye,
02:11so I was really interested to see what he had inside.
02:14Hello.
02:15This has got to be the place.
02:17Hello.
02:18Hey, how's it going?
02:19Okay, and you?
02:20Hey, I'm Mike.
02:21Hey, good to see you.
02:21Frank, you talked to Danny on the phone?
02:23How you doing?
02:24Eric, nice to meet you.
02:24Here's a flyer.
02:25I know she probably went over some of this stuff with you.
02:27Oh, wow.
02:27And we walk in here,
02:28it looks like you got like half of this stuff already.
02:30Dick and Eric, I can tell they're a father and son team.
02:33They've both been doing this for a while.
02:34There was tonnage, man.
02:36So this is all your own personal collection, all of this.
02:38Yes.
02:39Wow.
02:39Frank, I thought you were bad.
02:40No doubt.
02:42Do you specialize in anything?
02:43For me particularly,
02:44I like the fact that there's some sort of an art in there.
02:47Okay.
02:47When you see an item,
02:49there are people involved with that item in its history and its life.
02:53It represents a diversity of who we are as a people.
02:57There's something there.
02:58That's awesome.
02:59I like the way this guy thinks.
03:00You got some cool stuff here.
03:01There's no doubt.
03:02There's some folks that are at a daycare center who want the building,
03:04so I've got to clear some things out.
03:06This building right here?
03:07Yeah.
03:07Well, from just walking in the front door,
03:09I see you got a lot of stuff to clear out.
03:11Yeah.
03:11I think we got a challenge.
03:12Let's see if we can lighten your load.
03:14He has got stuff piled to the ceiling.
03:17Dang.
03:17Look at the size of this place.
03:18I'm looking over here.
03:19There's signs.
03:20There's machines.
03:20There's all kinds of stuff.
03:22Oh, there's that dog, Frank.
03:23For RCA?
03:24Yes.
03:25He's original.
03:26I mean, this guy had an amazing eye.
03:28Whoa.
03:29That's pretty cool.
03:30She was pretty naughty for her day.
03:32She is.
03:33It's a busted up store mannequin, a miniature, with this incredible lingerie on it.
03:38What are you thinking on this?
03:39Is this something you'd sell?
03:40Probably around three and a quarter on that one.
03:43She's quite good still, even.
03:46325?
03:46Yeah.
03:47She would be $1,200, $1,500 if she was in good shape easily.
03:50I mean, the most I'd want to pay for it's $100, because it's pretty busted up.
03:54I've got to stand away from her, because I'm falling in love.
03:56This guy's throwing some large numbers at us.
03:59How much is this?
04:00I wouldn't want to take any less than around, I don't know, $28 for that.
04:04They're hard to come by.
04:05Dang!
04:05Dick's prices were sky high retail.
04:08I couldn't even get that kind of money out of it.
04:10How about this early pinball machine here?
04:12Yeah, she's all there.
04:13I would go maybe $950.
04:15That'd be good.
04:16I think she's better than that, but...
04:18Okay.
04:18Me and Mike, we're pickers.
04:20We buy and resell.
04:21Mm-hmm.
04:21So we can't pay the top dollar for it.
04:24His prices, I don't know if Dick was ready to sell.
04:28It's time to find something cool, get this pick into high gear, and get some cash flowing.
04:33Oh, there we go.
04:33There we go.
04:34Rah!
04:35That's his.
04:36It's killer.
04:36Now, that one's two-sided, too.
04:38Yeah, double-sided.
04:39That's a good one.
04:39And he's still got his reflector.
04:41It's got the moxie on it.
04:42This tire company started making bicycle tires right around the turn of the century, and
04:47then moved into car tires.
04:48This little boy is a very iconic piece of automotive history.
04:53I had the tire boy and the tire.
04:55Oh, you did?
04:56The big one.
04:56Yeah.
04:57The big one, because I've seen a small one.
04:59There's the boy.
05:00What year do you think this little guy is?
05:02Late 20s.
05:03That's like you, Frank.
05:04He's yawning.
05:04I know.
05:05Look at that.
05:06Now that you don't have the tire boy, I mean, there's really no purpose in having
05:10this in, either, really.
05:11Yes.
05:12What are you thinking on this?
05:13That's a good sign.
05:14Yeah.
05:15You find signs that are this early, and they're always rotted, man.
05:18The paint's faded or they're cracked.
05:20This sign, it's mint.
05:22I think that would probably, in the right place, bring $1,200, $1,500 easily.
05:27Dang.
05:27A lot of the prices you're quoting me are retail prices.
05:30Maybe that's why there's so much stuff still here.
05:33No, nobody's seen it.
05:34Nobody's seen it?
05:35Nobody's been in here?
05:36We're the first guys in.
05:38Now that's a double-edged sword.
05:39Sometimes you can get the great stuff, but sometimes you're there just to test the water,
05:44to praise things for the person.
05:45If that's what Dick is doing, this pick is going to go nowhere fast.
05:49I tell you what, I'd step up all the way to six bills.
05:52What about 11?
05:53We're all going to be, 11?
05:54Yeah.
05:55Woo!
05:56I tell you what.
05:57Six is way too low.
05:58I'm going to get crazy here.
06:00I'm going to go to $700.
06:01If it was one-sided signs, this is a double.
06:04This is really super rare.
06:05Eric, help!
06:06Get over here!
06:07I'm not getting anywhere with this guy.
06:09Hopefully, Eric can help me out.
06:11Can we meet in the middle?
06:13What, a grand?
06:14Nine.
06:14A grand?
06:15Eric!
06:16Consult with me first here.
06:19950, that's bottom, and that's way below.
06:21Woo!
06:22I can see that Dick isn't budging again.
06:24It's time to move on.
06:25I'm over it.
06:26Oh, this is packed up down here, Dave.
06:28Whoa, mega.
06:30Whoa!
06:31Watch out, boys.
06:32Much for these petrified tires.
06:34They're wall hangers.
06:35These are wall hangers, exactly.
06:36Those are actually Fisk tires.
06:38They're Fisk.
06:38These are the tires that are advertised on the sign that Dick wouldn't part with.
06:42Coincidence?
06:43I think not.
06:44About one and a half each on them, because they're Fisk.
06:47I'll tell you what.
06:47I'll get crazy at $100.
06:51That's for the pair.
06:52Oh, for the pair?
06:53Yeah, for the pair.
06:54I'd do two on the pair.
06:55That would be good on this.
06:56Obviously, you appreciate them way more than I do.
06:58You don't want the tires.
06:59I'm over the tires.
07:00I think it's fate.
07:02The reason I came here today is to give you $900 for the fist sign.
07:07This is picking at its finest.
07:08Dick isn't giving in on the tires, so Mike's going to have to change his strategy to get
07:12what he really wants.
07:13You said $950 was your bottom up there.
07:16Yeah.
07:16Make me feel like I'm getting a good deal.
07:18This pick is like a wild stallion.
07:20It's getting away from me.
07:21I've got to throw a lasso out there, get that fist sign, and pull it back.
07:24$900 on the sign.
07:30$9 on the sign.
07:31All right, $9 on the sign.
07:32All right.
07:32We did it.
07:33We got something from Dick.
07:35We were feeling so depressed.
07:36I didn't want you to feel bad for long.
07:37Finally, we broke the ice.
07:39I stepped up a little higher on this tire sign.
07:42But with high-quality stuff comes a high price.
07:44Danielle said that when you were a young boy, like when you were 14 years old, you used
07:47to deliver paper.
07:48I delivered papers in Charlotte for the Charlotte Observer.
07:51He used to bring stuff home, so you were like up at like 4.35 o'clock in the morning.
07:55He had first dibs on the garbage.
07:56People threw out great stuff.
07:57Yeah.
07:58They still do.
07:58I think Eric cringes when I stop at Trash Piles.
08:01He collects stuff.
08:02He keeps things.
08:02He doesn't want to get rid of them, which means I'm kind of more of this.
08:05No.
08:07This is pretty crazy.
08:09You know, we see this a lot, where the older generation has collected a lot of items,
08:13and now the kids are trying to get them to sell to lighten their load.
08:17Oh.
08:18Dopey duck.
08:19Was it a carnival ride or something?
08:21No, it's like a coin-operated.
08:22Oh, yeah, okay.
08:22With coin-operated rides, it's all about the subject matter.
08:25It takes you back to your childhood.
08:27A lot of people collect these.
08:28This one, I've never seen before.
08:30Just sat outside of like a little store or something like that.
08:33They had it for kids.
08:34Okay.
08:34As an amusement.
08:35How long have you had it?
08:3635 years, maybe 40.
08:38Dopey Duck was a comic book character that had only been around for a short time during
08:42the 1940s.
08:43After two comics, they changed the character to Wacky Duck.
08:46Soon after that, he disappeared.
08:48I bought the horses before.
08:50I bought the candy apple red flying pig.
08:52Ooh.
08:53Crangy.
08:54But I've never seen Dopey Duck.
08:56Don't break it!
08:57You just get in here and...
08:59See, this handle's gone.
09:00It's like a Jesus.
09:02I can tell that Dick really loved this duck.
09:05It's like it was the 1950s and he was a kid again.
09:08This is exactly why a lot of guys collect.
09:10It takes them back to another time and place.
09:12How much is Dopey Duck?
09:15Dopey's $1400.
09:17$1400?
09:18Yeah.
09:18Here we go again with sky-high prices.
09:21There's no way this duck is worth $1400 as it stands now.
09:24The duck needs to be rewired.
09:26It's missing the saddle.
09:27It's missing the handle.
09:29How about a grand?
09:31Eleven and a half.
09:32That's coming from $1400.
09:33That's a good trip.
09:34$1,050, Dick.
09:36Eleven.
09:37That's good.
09:37I can't do it.
09:38I'm stepping away from the duck.
09:39I'm the first guy that's probably asked about it in 35 years.
09:42You're going to let him walk away for $50 on a duck here that you know you're never going
09:46to use?
09:46I couldn't let this deal fall apart.
09:48It was time for the bearded charmer to step in and save the day.
09:52So where are we, Levens?
09:53All right, let me step back into the gladiator arena here.
09:57I'd do $1,050 on the duck.
09:59And I was saying $1200.
10:00I'll do $1100.
10:01How about that?
10:02That's a good deal.
10:03He's stepping out.
10:04All right.
10:05We're moving on.
10:06I'm tapping out.
10:06I'm tapping out, Nick.
10:07We're moving on.
10:08Here, give me $1,050.
10:10All right.
10:10I don't like that.
10:12Your front side is much better than your back side.
10:15I got to hand it to Frank.
10:17I was ready to give up, and then Frankie helped me see it through.
10:22Look at all the ice cream stools.
10:24Yeah, these stools came out of downtown Greensboro.
10:27Out of the Woolworths department store and the Crest department store.
10:30And that's where the civil rights movement began.
10:33All kind of in the Greensboro Four?
10:35Correct.
10:36The Greensboro Four.
10:37Back in the day, this was a segregated South.
10:39They had whites-only lunch counters until four black students started the sit-in movement
10:44in Greensboro at the Woolworths.
10:46The movement spread next door to the Crest lunch counter and all across the South.
11:06Man, it looks like you got a lot of them here.
11:08Yeah, you got quite a few.
11:09Yeah, it was actually a Smithsonian museum came and took a couple of these out for a traveling
11:12display they had about the civil rights.
11:14Really?
11:15So you got them all from the Crest building and the Woolworths.
11:17Yeah, which are right there in the same couple blocks right where the movement started.
11:20Yeah.
11:21Are these something that you might sell?
11:23Yeah, I could sell some of them.
11:24What would you have to have maybe for a couple of them?
11:27Well, I'd like to get around two and a quarter for them.
11:30These stools are a great piece of history.
11:32But at two and a quarter, I don't know if there's enough meat left on the bone.
11:35How about maybe 75 a piece?
11:38That's 150.
11:39How about 125?
11:41A piece?
11:44Maybe 100 a piece would be okay on them?
11:46What about two and a quarter?
11:47We split the difference or something.
11:48Both of them?
11:49Yeah.
11:50That's fine.
11:51Does that work?
11:52That's fine.
11:52Okay.
11:52Yeah, they got some great history.
11:53Those are awesome, Frank.
11:54Yeah.
11:55I mean, I think those are cool.
11:56For me to be able to buy these historical stools that came out of the Friendsboro Four,
12:01this will go down on my folklore of picking.
12:04How much are those big car lights?
12:06Are these something you'd sell?
12:07Uh, yeah.
12:08Brass era parts are extremely hard to find.
12:11I'd be in at five.
12:13Which one did you want?
12:14I want the pair for five.
12:25Hey, look at the size of this place.
12:27Dick has been collecting for some 40-odd years.
12:30The warehouse wasn't just full of antiques.
12:32It was filled with a lot of things that were unique, unusual, and different.
12:37Whoa.
12:38Corvette.
12:38Cars too, huh?
12:39Yeah.
12:39I've got to have those unique, different items in my store for people to come in.
12:45How much are those big car lights?
12:47What are those off, a fire truck or something?
12:49I don't know if those are fire truck or like one of the early large touring vehicles.
12:54As soon as I saw these lights, I knew they were from the brass era, also known as the horseless
12:58carriage era.
12:59These are early.
13:01Yeah.
13:01From the 1890s to World War I, the brass era was the first era in automobile manufacturing.
13:07All the fittings, the lights, the radiators, all of this stuff was made of brass.
13:21And I think those are gas.
13:23Yeah, somebody electrified them at one point.
13:25Aw.
13:25What's wild about them is they have their own fuel source.
13:28This is a reservoir.
13:28This is a tank for it.
13:30Brass era parts are extremely hard to find and can be very valuable.
13:34Are these something you'd sell?
13:35Um, yeah.
13:36I'm thinking like, uh, I'd be in at five.
13:40Which one did you want?
13:42I want the pair for five.
13:45For the pair of those, I would, I don't know, like $750.
13:50$750.
13:50I see lights like that go $700, $800, $900 each.
13:53If you got the application.
13:55Danielle is exactly right about Dick.
13:57This guy is highly educated.
13:58He really knows about his stuff.
14:00But I'm a picker.
14:01I've got to get a good price.
14:02I'll tell you what, I'll come up.
14:04You're working with me a little bit.
14:06How about six bills?
14:07Ah, gee.
14:08I just, those are, those are good.
14:10Those are really, really good.
14:12I mean, you know.
14:12Hey, you called me.
14:13One of them's worth that.
14:15Six and a half, you shouldn't do it.
14:17Why don't we do this?
14:18Make me feel like I'm getting a good deal.
14:19$625.
14:22Um, okay, you bought it.
14:25Alright, Dick.
14:27There you go.
14:27$625.
14:28Didn't even do the deal and I'm sweating.
14:30Woo!
14:30Dick was a tough negotiator.
14:31We barely made a dent in his collection.
14:33But this guy's got a warehouse full of high quality items.
14:36And when you deal with high quality stuff.
14:37Grab Dopey.
14:38You got high quality prices.
14:40Alright, take off it.
14:41I paid $1,050 for Dopey Duck.
14:43I'm gonna ask $1,800.
14:46Those might be the most historical thing that you've ever bought.
14:49Could be.
14:50I paid $225 for the stools.
14:52I think for the collector of black American history, priceless.
14:56Here, Frank, you grab one of these.
14:57Hit me down.
14:57The big brass car lights I paid $625 for.
15:00I'm gonna have them appraised.
15:03I enjoyed the time that we had together with Mike and Frank today.
15:07Thanks for all your help.
15:08Overall, I think they had an appreciation across the board of quite a number of things.
15:12You had a great eye, my friend.
15:14Seriously.
15:14Enjoyed it.
15:15We put a little bit of a dent in it.
15:16How much?
15:16A little bit.
15:17That's really what I'm looking for on most of the special items.
15:20Wherever they go, it's because somebody appreciates them for what they are.
15:23Yeah.
15:24See you guys later.
15:25See you.
15:26Have a good one.
15:34I think we need a new van because this seat has got like a permanent lean going over.
15:40And I'm telling you what, at the end of the night, I feel like I need an adjustment
15:44because of my...
15:44You know what I mean?
15:45Wait a second.
15:46Let me get this straight.
15:47You think we need a new van because your seats wore out?
15:50That's what I think.
15:51And plus, I mean, look at the mileage.
15:53I think it'd be cheaper to get a seat than it would be a new van.
15:55We drove 1,000 miles down here.
15:57We've got a pocket full of money.
15:58Let's empty the pocket and fill the van.
16:00I got you.
16:01Usually when we're out freestyling, Mike thinks he always finds the great spots.
16:04You know?
16:05Today he's driving.
16:06I have the opportunity to look.
16:08See anything?
16:09Not yet.
16:09All I'm looking at is forest here.
16:11All right.
16:11What about that place right there?
16:12They got more money than we did.
16:14Wow.
16:15That place is huge.
16:16This is kind of a tricky area here because there's old and there's new.
16:21Pull, dude.
16:22Hold up.
16:22Hold up.
16:23Hold up.
16:23There's a ton.
16:25Some old finds.
16:26Look at the old pickup truck.
16:28I'll have to admit that this is a good one.
16:30This looks pretty good.
16:31All right.
16:32Look how much stuff this guy's got.
16:36A lot of outbuildings.
16:38This place looks like a picking village.
16:40Hey, how you doing?
16:41Hey, how are ya?
16:42How y'all doing?
16:42My name's Frank.
16:43Hey, I'm Mike.
16:44Nice to meet you.
16:45What are you acting?
16:45We're pickers.
16:46We're pickers.
16:46And this is like a little list of some of the stuff that we buy.
16:49Yeah.
16:49Do you sell anything here?
16:51I'll sell anything you want.
16:54All right.
16:55You're talking already.
16:55They're in the right place.
16:56That's music to our ears.
16:58I'm a sort of, I say, halfway collector.
17:01I like to collect stuff.
17:02You got a few minutes to show us around?
17:03Oh, yeah.
17:03I'll show you, man.
17:04Okay, cool.
17:05Let's look around.
17:06All right.
17:06When you can go on somebody's property, within five minutes he's showing you around and telling
17:11you everything's for sale, it's going to be a good day.
17:13Been on this property 72 years.
17:1672 years?
17:17So you were born on the property?
17:18I was raised right here on this farm.
17:20I'll be darned.
17:21So did you build all this stuff?
17:22Build everything you see.
17:24It's called Mooseville.
17:25Mooseville.
17:26I don't fish and I don't bowl.
17:28I don't play golf.
17:29So I love to build things with my hands and enjoy times of yesterday.
17:34How'd you come up with the name?
17:35Well, I'm a Moose.
17:36I just put bill on it.
17:38Is your last name Moose?
17:39Yeah.
17:39That's Charlie Moose.
17:40Charlie Moose.
17:41Makes sense.
17:41All right.
17:41I got it.
17:42That's cool.
17:45Look at this, Frankie.
17:46Mooseville Hardware.
17:47Seen that.
17:47Charlie built a hardware store, a church, a cabin, a hotel, a saloon.
17:51This guy built a whole little town.
17:54That's my mom and dad's old stone.
17:56That's amazing you still have that, Charlie.
17:57This town isn't open to the public like an amusement park.
18:00Charlie built this with his father for their own enjoyment.
18:03What's this?
18:04Is this like a little church you built?
18:05My daddy helped me build that in 1970.
18:07Have you ever had a wedding in here?
18:09Had 17 weddings in there and one funeral.
18:11Really?
18:12Had my wife's funeral in here.
18:13Wow.
18:15I liked Daisy yesterday and that's the reason I built this old town.
18:18If Charlie dreamed it, he could build it.
18:21I'm going to show you the old hotel now.
18:23You can get it.
18:24That's a cool cabinet.
18:25Look at that.
18:25Pretty cool.
18:25Now, have you ever had anybody spend the night here?
18:28Had two fellas, but they got in the bed up there and bumblebees are built in the matches.
18:33They come out of there right quick.
18:36What I like about Charlie was he's exactly like the guys I used to go visit when I was
18:40a little kid.
18:41I'd visit all the old guys that were sitting in their garages and they were building something.
18:46Is that sign plastic?
18:47That's plastic with the...
18:48Yeah, it's plastic.
18:49Come from High Point.
18:51My cousin gave it to me.
18:52It's got a good look to it.
18:53The lighthouse is cool.
18:54Yeah.
18:54I usually don't buy plastic, but there's a lot of people out there that collect nautical
18:58items and there'll always be a market for it.
19:00What would you have to have for something like that?
19:0235.
19:0335?
19:0435 dollars.
19:06How about 30?
19:07You got it.
19:0830?
19:09All right.
19:10I think it's a really cool sign.
19:11I mean, you could put a light behind it.
19:12It had great colors and great subject matter.
19:15Well, let's go up here and see the old mine shaft me and my daddy, Doug.
19:19You're walking across the hole now.
19:21Look at this thing.
19:23No way.
19:25This is cool, man.
19:26This is really cool.
19:27We walked down into the mine shaft and I thought, okay, this is going to be a little room.
19:31Look it.
19:32I can almost stand up here.
19:33Shh.
19:34I mean, it went on forever.
19:36There's a lot of dirt in here on the ground.
19:38I think it's caving in.
19:39It was built in 69, so it's been here a while.
19:44Oh, yeah.
19:45Look at this, Mike.
19:46Whoa.
19:48Charlie, you're blowing my mind.
19:50I was kind of wondering, where are we going to end up and what could be better?
19:53The town bar.
19:54Charlie's three bars for them.
19:56This place is cool, man.
19:57What year did you guys build this?
19:58This was the first thing we built at 66.
20:01Have you got this configured where if you leave the bar with a woman that ain't your girlfriend,
20:05can you go through the mine shaft into the hotel?
20:08You're the one saying that I am.
20:12Let's dig a little deeper back in here.
20:15Does this go with this?
20:16Yep.
20:17Okay, here.
20:19These go on each side.
20:20Now we're cooking with gas.
20:22It's a small man carved out of wood.
20:24He's got a little top hat on.
20:26This one's broke right here, but it could be glued.
20:28Let me see it.
20:28If you look at the detail in his face and his suit and his legs and everything, I mean,
20:33someone spent a lot of time making this piece.
20:36Frankie's got some tape here.
20:37He's working on here.
20:38There you go.
20:38Ooh, duct tape.
20:41Ooh, yeah.
20:42Look at that.
20:43Frankie got it working.
20:44Whoa.
20:45Whoa.
20:46Looks like you had a couple drinks.
20:48What do you got half for that?
20:51$3.
20:53$3.
20:54$3.
20:54All right, I'll take it.
20:55This is what makes our job so crazy.
20:58I just came from a pic where a guy was asking $1,000 for an item.
21:01Now I'm at Charlie's place, and he's asking $3 for something.
21:04It doesn't get more polar opposite than that.
21:07Look, he's got a little stage set up there.
21:09Will you do karaoke or something?
21:10No, we have live bands.
21:12Live bands?
21:13Yeah.
21:14You play?
21:14I play bass and I play juice harp.
21:17I was 6-year-old when my mama bought my first juice harp, and she said,
21:21boy, don't you break your teeth with that thing.
21:35All right.
21:36That sounded good.
21:37All right.
21:38If you were to send these off and have them brought back to pristine quality,
21:42you would expect to spend between $5,000 and $10,000 in restoration.
21:46I started circling the drain man.
21:48I'm like, okay, maybe I paid too much for him.
21:57This place just keeps on rolling.
21:59You know, we're having a really great time with Charlie.
22:01I mean, he's like the grandfather I never had.
22:03This is what I call a kid that's got everything.
22:05All right.
22:06But you know what?
22:07We're pickers.
22:08We have to at least cover our gas money.
22:10A little Listerine bottle.
22:11There you go.
22:11Are you trying to tell me something?
22:12Yeah.
22:13Mike, you might need some of that.
22:14Quit making it.
22:15Oh, you mean in the bottle, I guess.
22:16In the can.
22:16So this is collectible?
22:17Yeah.
22:18As pickers, we always try to stay ahead of the curve.
22:21All of a sudden, Charlie says, it's a glass bottle.
22:23They don't do Listerine in glass bottles anymore.
22:34How much is this?
22:35That's $3.
22:36$3.
22:37You know what?
22:37I'm going to buy this.
22:38This is going to be collectible someday.
22:39Listerine bottles are coming back.
22:41Damn straight.
22:44Ross.
22:45Oh, he got hair.
22:47That was a speedometer to come out of a Hup-mobile.
22:49Oh, the speedometer was out of a Hup-mobile?
22:51Yeah.
22:52My grandpa's Hup-mobile.
22:53They made Hup-mobiles from 1909 to 1940.
22:56This would have been on an earlier version of the car when speedometers were like accessories,
23:01kind of like GPS is today.
23:03How much?
23:04$5.
23:05$5.
23:06It's a Stewart speedometer.
23:07It's in decent condition.
23:09How about $4?
23:11I'm just kidding you.
23:12$5, I'll take it.
23:13All right.
23:13We make our living off of selling smalls.
23:16I mean, somebody wants to come into our shop and buy something that's unique and different.
23:20This is one of those items.
23:22Come on in here.
23:23Oh, yeah.
23:24I see some bicycles.
23:26We got some old and irons.
23:28Some rocking horses.
23:29Did you make this?
23:31Whirligig.
23:31Pretty cool.
23:32You made that?
23:33Yeah.
23:33How long ago?
23:34Probably 20 years ago I made that.
23:36The term Whirligig is for an item that spins or whirls.
23:39This one's really cool because the little guy on top is supposed to move back and forth
23:43like he saw in wood.
23:45It's kind of cool.
23:46Look at that.
23:47All right.
23:48I mean, he ain't chopping right now.
23:50What happened is it's out of line here.
23:52It's got to be pushed back down.
23:53It needs realignment.
23:54Kind of looks like father time.
23:56Yeah.
23:56For any folk art piece, when you have the story about the craftsman that made it,
24:00it gives it a lot more appeal.
24:02It's for sale.
24:0220 bucks.
24:04$20?
24:04I'm going to buy it because you made it.
24:06All right.
24:07All right.
24:07Thank you, Frank.
24:11Tell me about this frame here, man.
24:13This is cool.
24:14Something that I noticed that looked completely out of place was this amazing gilded frame.
24:18That frame come out of Midland, North Carolina.
24:21The man had a mirror in it.
24:23He broke the mirror and he said, you get it out of here.
24:26I said, I had enough bad luck.
24:27So he was a superstitious guy.
24:29How long have you had it?
24:31I had it probably 20 years.
24:3320 years.
24:33And in the 20 years, have you had any bad luck?
24:35I ain't had no bad luck.
24:36You know, I always had good luck.
24:38All right.
24:38This is from the Victorian era.
24:39A lot of people would love something like this because it shows its age.
24:44This ornate piece would have came down to here, and this piece would have came all the way up.
24:48So it's got a little damage.
24:49But I tell you what, with the gilding of it, it's a really neat piece.
24:52People are trying to reproduce things that look this old.
24:55So when you see something in an old building, and they've got a story behind it, and it's amazing, I
25:01had to have it.
25:02$25.
25:03$25?
25:05Yeah.
25:05It's worth more than $25 to me.
25:08Charlie's a really great guy, and he's been really good to us with his prices.
25:12This frame is worth way more than $25.
25:14It's time to pay it forward.
25:16I'd pay, uh, I'd pay $75 for it.
25:22You got it.
25:23All right, my friend.
25:24All right.
25:26Everybody wants to leave their mark on the world.
25:29Charlie's mark is Mooseville.
25:31It's going to live way beyond him.
25:33We appreciate the hospitality.
25:35Today, we didn't discover gold, but we found some stuff that we really liked.
25:39And that's what's important when you're a picker.
25:41All right.
25:42I bought the frame for $75.
25:45I'm going to add a mirror to it and ask $300.
25:49I paid $30 for the lighthouse sign.
25:51I think I can get at least $75.
25:54Watch out for my little guy here.
25:56I paid $3 for the Balancing Man folk art piece.
25:58To me, it's worth $50.
26:02Charlie.
26:02It was fun, man.
26:03I tell you what.
26:04You surprised the hell out of me with that mine shaft.
26:07I sort of like about everything they bought, but I don't mind them having it.
26:11I'm glad they got it.
26:12The place was great.
26:13Thanks a lot for your hospitality.
26:14Thank you all for stopping in.
26:16I enjoy people coming and looking at my town, watching how they smile and enjoy.
26:22See you, Charlie.
26:23Goodbye.
26:23Take care.
26:25I'll visit Mooseville again.
26:26Yes or no?
26:27Did I pull off the place?
26:28I did get a cool frame.
26:30I was just trying to make sure that you thought that was a good pick.
26:33It was a great pick.
26:34All right.
26:34Well, who picked it?
26:38What?
26:38I can't hear you.
26:39Run over by me one more time.
26:40It was a great pick.
26:45So I bought these old headlights from Dick a couple of days ago.
26:48I've asked Danielle to hook us up with an appraiser out here in North Carolina.
26:51So Danielle calls a guy named Bob.
26:53This guy specializes in brass-era car stuff.
26:55He's perfect for the appraisal on these lights.
26:58It's the right place.
26:59Got the cars, man.
27:00Hey, guys.
27:01Hey, how you doing?
27:02Hey, you Bob?
27:03What you got?
27:03Yeah.
27:04Mike.
27:04How you doing? Frank.
27:05Got the lights, man.
27:06Did Danny send you a couple pictures?
27:08Yeah.
27:08Check them out.
27:09I was excited to see the lights.
27:11I would say they're very rare.
27:13You're not going to swipe a credit card anywhere and find anything like that.
27:16These lights ran off carbide pellets or powder.
27:19Bob said that these headlights were fueled by carbide pellets.
27:22That's one of the things that drew me towards these lights.
27:36You would put your water in your canteen.
27:38OK.
27:38Put your pellets in the side.
27:40Make sure that you got enough water to go where you're going and get back.
27:43Yeah.
27:43That would drip on the pellets?
27:44Yes.
27:45That would create a gas.
27:46OK.
27:47You light the flame.
27:48Make sure you got your gases adjusted right so it's not too hot.
27:52That's a lot to go just out for dinner, huh?
27:54We've got it easy today.
27:56I mean, imagine all the steps you had to take to be able to get your headlights to work before
27:59you could even go for a drive.
28:01I know Cadillac was one of the first cars that went all electric.
28:04Electric starter, electric lights.
28:071912.
28:07So that narrows it down.
28:09We know these are probably older than 1912.
28:11Sure.
28:11Wow.
28:12I was pretty sure these lights were brass era, but when Bob placed them pre-1912, I knew
28:16I was right on.
28:17I'd never heard of this manufacturer before either, you know.
28:21That says CL Charlie.
28:23Does it say Paris?
28:25Yep.
28:26It says Paris.
28:27We know that they are for a European car.
28:31It could be for a Mercedes, Rolls Royce.
28:33I like those names when we're dealing with this kind of subject.
28:36It's better than Ford and Pinto.
28:38I thought they were for a truck.
28:39But when Bob said they were for a Mercedes Benz, all of a sudden they went from working
28:42class to first class.
28:44These would get really hot.
28:45They shook a lot.
28:46Because of all of the damage from the heat and the vibration when you looked for spider
28:50cracks, I was concerned about these dents.
28:53Yeah.
28:53He's pointing out a lot of things on them that I didn't really notice.
28:56You know, he's going, hey, did you see this dent here?
28:58Did you see this piece is missing?
29:00Suddenly, I'm starting to second guess myself.
29:02If you were to send these off and have them brought back to pristine quality, you would
29:07expect to spend between $5,000 and $10,000 in restoration.
29:10Really?
29:11Yes.
29:12Well, it's going to take a lot of money to get the dents out.
29:14A lot of stuff's going to have to be remade.
29:16When Bob said it would cost $5,000 to $10,000 to restore these lights, I started circling
29:21the drain, man.
29:22I'm like, okay, maybe I paid too much for them.
29:25We paid $625,000 for them.
29:26I know they're rough, but in this condition, what do you value them at?
29:35Well, I would probably say $2,000.
29:54Really?
29:55Yes.
29:56That's good.
29:56And either are good, Frankie.
29:58I know they're that good.
29:58These things have been sitting on a shelf for 40 years.
30:01I couldn't be happier, man.
30:02Thank you so much.
30:04That's awesome.
30:05I think it was a very good find.
30:06Let's head them on out.
30:07Be careful.
30:08I know.
30:09Now we've got to be twice as careful with them.
30:11Three times, actually.
30:12If you're the guy that's got the car, and you've been searching the globe for these specific
30:16lights, and you can't find them, where are you going to get them?
30:19You can get them from me and Frank.
30:21See you, buddy!
30:31Danielle!
30:32Hey!
30:32What's going on, girl?
30:33I have a lead that I fully expect you two to freak out about, Beano and Robin, his wife.
30:39Okay, this dude owns a ton of motorcycle stuff.
30:42This guy was actually born in the back of an Indian motorcycle shop.
30:46What?
30:46This guy has so much good stuff.
30:49Awesome dude.
30:49This is the ultimate dream you two have been waiting for forever.
30:53Danny, if this thing pans out, man, me and Frankie are going to give you a big old
30:57present, girl.
30:58Maybe an early Indian.
31:00How about that?
31:00Let's not hatch our eggs here before we get there.
31:03We'll check it out and let you know.
31:04I can't believe you guys are not absolutely jumping out of your skin.
31:07We are.
31:07We are.
31:08Woo!
31:10Howlin' Wolf and little Frankie Fritz.
31:11Yup.
31:12I'll see you later.
31:13See you later.
31:15Danielle really got us excited about this pick.
31:18I just hope it's as good as she says it is, because we never know until we get there.
31:22Alright, this is it.
31:23Look at the size of this building.
31:24Wow, this is huge.
31:27Settle down.
31:28What?
31:28I'm trying to get in here a little bit.
31:29What are you doing?
31:31Freak.
31:32Hello.
31:33Hey.
31:33Hey.
31:34How you doing?
31:34You Beano?
31:35Yeah.
31:36Hey, I'm Mike.
31:36Nice to meet you.
31:37Hi.
31:37My name's Frank.
31:41I see Beano and Robin.
31:42They're really nice people, but I can't help looking around this room.
31:46This place is like Santa's workshop for motorcycles.
31:49Danielle said that you were actually born in an Indian dealership.
31:53We lived over the Indian shop in Chicago.
31:55Then when I was two, my Indian company moved my dad to Georgia.
31:59Oh, okay.
32:00That's cool.
32:00My father was a motorcycle dealer from the day I was born until he died.
32:05When I was very young, my father started me off on a little Indian papoose.
32:11About 59 or 60, I started racing.
32:14So you're still racing?
32:15Yeah.
32:16How many races do you do in a year?
32:18Over a hundred.
32:19Really?
32:19Wow.
32:20Beano is in his mid-60s and he's still racing a hundred times a year.
32:23This guy is my idol.
32:25So Beano, Danielle told us that you're ready to sell something.
32:28I've got some medical issues with my knees.
32:30Yeah?
32:30Wore my body out.
32:32So to keep on racing, I've got to start building up a little fund to get them replaced.
32:37Okay.
32:37I've got the knee fund in my pocket here.
32:41Can we look around a little bit?
32:42Sure.
32:43Look at this.
32:45Wow.
32:45Whoa.
32:47This is all new old stock, BSA and Tramp parts.
32:51Oh, my gosh.
32:51Most places we go to, people just have stuff thrown all over.
32:55He had everything categorized.
32:56Oh, he has all brand new valves, everything.
32:58That's phenomenal.
32:59We had five shops around Atlanta.
33:02The only thing I wanted to keep was the British and Indian stuff, so I just built this building.
33:06Just to house it?
33:07That's awesome.
33:08I couldn't dream up a vintage motorcycle pick this big.
33:12All right, so this is sheet metal area.
33:14Down one aisle, it's all gas tanks, Norton's, BSA, Triumphs.
33:19I've never seen this many tanks in one spot.
33:21Going cross-country racing a lot, I'd stop in dealerships and find stuff.
33:26Oh, yeah, yeah.
33:27He was picking when he was racing, like he'd travel on the back roads going to the races.
33:31And buy stuff, too?
33:31If they could talk.
33:33They could tell some stories.
33:34They could.
33:35Wow, that's cool.
33:36Look at that sucker.
33:36That was my Norton 750.
33:39If you turn it over, it takes a nitrous bottle.
33:42Oh, wow.
33:56You'd hit the button, but then when you let off the button, it didn't slow down.
33:59It kept going.
34:02Imagine going down the road on a Norton 750 factory racer, and you're thinking to yourself,
34:07150-mile-an-hour is not enough.
34:09Boom.
34:10You push this button, and you're like Frank on Red Bull.
34:12Some original Indian stuff here.
34:15Ooh, look at that sucker.
34:16That one's been through a slam-bam fire.
34:19It's probably a 59 model.
34:22Yeah.
34:22Around 500.
34:23The one that is the most compelling to me is the tank that's burned up, that's sweaty-looking,
34:28that's dented, that's scratched up, that's got grease and oil all over it.
34:32How much does something like that worth?
34:33Probably 100 bucks.
34:35100 bucks?
34:37Mm-hmm.
34:37You know what I'd use it for?
34:38Just a display piece.
34:39Imagine the story this tank can tell.
34:42It's talking to me.
34:43How about 75 bucks?
34:47Yeah, I'd go 75.
34:48We ain't that far.
34:48All right, 75 bucks.
34:49All right.
34:50All right, I broke the ice here.
34:51You got to pick out the toastiest one you got.
34:53The toastiest one.
34:56Whoa!
34:57There's a lot up here.
34:59Dang!
34:59Yeah, there's a few bikes up here.
35:01That's been collecting a long time.
35:03This is a British invasion right here, man.
35:05Everything in this building is basically British.
35:08A lot of it's vintage motorcycle racing.
35:10A lot of it's stuff I've never seen before.
35:12Vino is schooling us.
35:14This one I had in Europe for 20 years.
35:16It's a BSA Gold Star 58.
35:19You were racing in Europe?
35:20Yeah.
35:21Me and my wife would go over there.
35:23Yeah.
35:24And we would go from England to the Isle of Man,
35:27strip it down and race it.
35:28You raced at the Isle of Man?
35:30Yeah.
35:30Wow.
35:31That's cool.
35:32The International Isle of Man Tourist Trophy Race
35:34is one of the most prestigious races in the world.
35:37It's held at the Isle of Man in England
35:39and it's still a killer, cool event to this day.
35:53Love the Alameda.
35:54So you were sitting there with a cappuccino on the corner,
35:56watching him fly by?
35:57No.
35:58I had a lager.
36:01It didn't matter.
36:02This is insane.
36:03Yeah.
36:04You don't get to see stuff like this, you know?
36:05As much as I love this bike, I don't even need to ask.
36:08I know it's not for sale.
36:10That's awesome that you still have it too.
36:14Ooh.
36:15Vino's got a lot of amazing stories, but better yet,
36:17he's got a lot of amazing things we need to keep on picking.
36:20Yeah, there you go.
36:22Look at that.
36:23Hey, it's just your size.
36:26It is.
36:27This is an early piece.
36:28Oxblood Red has felt Indian script across the chest.
36:32Awesome item.
36:33That was my mom's.
36:35Oh, this was your mom's?
36:36No kidding.
36:36My dad's wore out years ago.
36:39So your mom and dad both had these?
36:40Yeah.
36:41That's awesome.
36:41The history of American motorcycling roots lies in Indian.
36:45They started business in 1901.
36:48They were the first company.
36:49Harley started in 03.
36:50I mean, when you look at a piece of clothing like this,
36:52it tells a story.
36:53The kind of clients that we have that love antique motorcycles
36:56just don't love the motorcycles.
36:58They love the accessories.
36:59And this sweater has everything going for it.
37:02Is this something you'd sell?
37:04It probably would, yeah.
37:06What would you have to have for it?
37:08I'm thinking $200.
37:13That's exactly what I was thinking in this condition.
37:15I'd be honored to own it for that.
37:17Okay.
37:17Thank you so much.
37:19Good deal.
37:19If it was in better condition, Robin would be wearing it, right?
37:23That's right.
37:24That's right.
37:24Everybody is always searching out the part, the bike,
37:27anything that has to do with the lifestyle.
37:29I'm looking at this sweater, and it's amazing.
37:33Beano, are those leathers, are those something you would sell?
37:35Yeah, probably would.
37:36These are worn leathers, but they're still in great shape.
37:39They're a little bit tight.
37:40I mean, how long have you had them?
37:42I won them in Europe.
37:43I won the championship for wearer road racing.
37:47Whoever won the championship get a new set of leathers.
37:50And the guy that made them said, this isn't fair.
37:53It's going to take a cow and a half.
37:56He's hoping some skinny dude will win.
37:58Yeah.
37:59These are great racing leathers.
38:00They've got some history to them.
38:02And you know what?
38:03He can't fit in them anymore.
38:04What would you have to have for him?
38:06Probably around 600 bucks.
38:10About 400.
38:11I'd go five.
38:14How about I split it with you at 450?
38:28How about I split it with you at 450?
38:31That sounds pretty good.
38:35All right.
38:36Okay.
38:36450?
38:37Whose hand do I shake?
38:39Hers.
38:39All right.
38:40I think those are great.
38:41The leathers, to me, are a part of the history of Beano racing.
38:45And I knew Beano was going to have a hard time letting go of his leathers.
38:49So that's why I kind of stepped in.
38:55Oh, what do you got here, Beano?
38:56What's that?
38:57That's a 20s cutaway Indian motor that used to be on the counter at my dad's shop in Chicago.
39:03Oh, wow.
39:04Boom.
39:04That's really cool.
39:05This is an early Indian factory cutaway motor.
39:091922 was the first year of the Indian chief.
39:12Beano tells me that this was on the counter in the dealership ever since he was a little kid.
39:17Now, I look at this motor and I see that this is not made for the consumer level.
39:22This cutaway motor was only for dealers so they can show people how this motor worked.
39:26This thing is cool.
39:27You see the transmission of the sun.
39:28Right.
39:28You even cut the carburetor bowl out.
39:31See the float bowl?
39:32Yeah.
39:32Look at the float.
39:33So do you remember this thing?
39:35Yeah.
39:35Pretty cool.
39:36Sitting on the counter.
39:36You could turn it over and see all the parts move.
39:39It's moving.
39:40Yeah, it's moving.
39:41Everything's moving.
39:42When you crank the handle in the back, you can see the valves go up and down.
39:45To me, it's art in motion.
39:46I've seen Triumph cutaways, BFA cutaways, but not the Indian motor ones.
39:50This has the original paint.
39:51It's on the original stand.
39:53It still has a little bit of nickel on the cylinders.
39:55Can I make you an offer on it?
39:57Sure.
39:58How about 4,000?
40:01I was born with it and I've had it a long time.
40:03No, believe me, I can completely understand your family's history with it.
40:07What's the bottom number that you would take on it?
40:10I'd go 5,000.
40:11You won't find any more.
40:13No, I know.
40:14I've never seen one.
40:15I've never ever seen one.
40:18You know what?
40:19I'm going to do the 5 grand.
40:20I'll do the 5,000.
40:21I love it.
40:22I absolutely love it.
40:23It really speaks to the history of the dealerships and the company itself.
40:27This is an amazing piece of Indian motorcycle, American motorcycle history.
40:32What else we got on this shelf here?
40:34There's an 07 or 08 Indian motorcycle.
40:36Oh, didn't you see that?
40:38Look at that right there.
40:39Oh, it's got the oil tank with it.
40:41Cool piece.
40:42Now, was this out of your father's dealership as well or is this something that you guys acquired?
40:47Oh, yeah.
40:47This was too.
40:47Yeah.
40:48Not too long ago in Texas, Frank and I bought the rear section of an 08 Indian.
40:53I picked that up for the swap mate.
40:54What's left of it there is enough to possibly work with, especially for a guy that's got a motor.
41:00If I can get this motor and this oil tank, that's going to get me closer to being on the
41:04road.
41:05The timer's broken right here.
41:07It's a three bolt pattern on the top, so it's an earlier one.
41:10It's free too, huh?
41:11Yeah.
41:12The condition of this motor is amazing.
41:14There's really no chips in the fins.
41:16The oil tank is there.
41:17It's intact.
41:18It's amazing that it still exists.
41:21But you know what's the value of that?
41:23Um, probably $4,000.
41:26I stood tall on this one.
41:27I was at 5K on this one.
41:29Yeah.
41:29Okay.
41:30Timer's broken on this.
41:32They reproduce these, but I still have to step up to the plate and get another one.
41:35Since I've paid $5,000 for this one, would you do $28,000 on this one?
41:41No.
41:42It's a little bit low.
41:44I'm thinking $35,000 would probably be better.
41:47$35,000?
41:49What about, I see this, this manifold and this carb.
41:53I've got the opportunity to walk out of here with two really rare Indian motors.
41:57I'm not going to show my cards, but I'm going to pull a Frankie and do a bundle.
42:00This looks like Excelsior manifold to me.
42:03Excelsiors were made by Schwinn after 1911.
42:07So this carburetor and this manifold being for a 1912 Excelsior twin, to me, is motorcycle and bicycle a really
42:15cool crossover.
42:26What are you thinking on this?
42:28Probably about $600.
42:31How about I come up to $32,000 and throw on this?
42:39I'd go $34,000.
42:41So you're paying $3,000 for that and you're paying $400,000 for the carb.
42:43Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
42:44You're kind of stepping up on the carb.
42:45I can't imagine leaving here without this Indian motor.
42:48I've never seen one like this before and I doubt I'll ever see one like it again.
42:53How about $33,000?
42:58$33,000?
42:59Yeah.
43:00Okay, $33,000.
43:01All right.
43:02Thank you, my friend.
43:03This is the kind of stuff that keeps me up at night, man.
43:05It's an American motorcycle.
43:06This is an incredible piece.
43:08Getting to hear Beano and Robin's amazing stories made this a great day.
43:12But walking out of here with not one but two Indian motors really pushed this pick over the edge.
43:16We haven't had a pick like this in a long time.
43:20I paid $3,000 for the 1908 Indian motor.
43:23I think it's worth $5,500.
43:26It's got so much personality to it.
43:28I paid $200 for the Indian sweater.
43:31I value it at $400.
43:33Every once in a while, Danielle will oversell a pick.
43:36But not in this case.
43:37Beano's collection definitely lives up to the hype.
43:40All right.
43:41You're welcome.
43:42I paid $450 for the Indian Racing Leathers.
43:44I think I get at least $700.
43:48All right, my friend.
43:49Thanks for having us on.
43:50Sure.
43:50It was a good day.
43:51It was a good day.
43:52I guess I have attachment to all that stuff, but I've got plenty more.
43:57That was awesome.
43:58It was a great time.
44:00Motor's going to a good home.
44:01You bet.
44:01Next time you guys are around, you need to go for a ride on my trail.
44:05What?
44:05You got trails?
44:06Yeah.
44:06Let's go riding right now.
44:08Let's go.
44:17Me and Mike are always out on the road and we're always cooped up in the van.
44:20So when there comes a time that we can hop on a motorcycle and ride with a pro like Beano,
44:24it's fantastic.
44:25Woo!
44:26Woah!
44:26You
