00:02Holy moly!
00:04This is called the ozone.
00:06This is probably an early form of...
00:08Giving oxygen.
00:09This is like a modern-day vaporizer.
00:12How much would something like this be?
00:14I mean, don't make me have to use it.
00:17That's some of his old liquor steels, eh?
00:19We actually made liquor under my carport one time.
00:22Mama didn't know it, though.
00:23No, I didn't.
00:25I'm gonna have a talk with him after this is over.
00:27You wanna go ahead and kiss me?
00:29No.
00:30No.
00:31Frank!
00:31This flute was carried by Joseph Carroll Gillette.
00:35Was carried all the way through the Civil War.
00:38Fought in Antietam, Gettysburg.
00:41Wow.
00:41This is incredible.
00:42These are two of the most famous, most collected battles in the Civil War.
00:46If this flute was at both, we're talking serious dollars here.
00:52I'm Mike Wolfe.
00:53And I'm Frank Frex.
00:54And we're Pickers.
00:57We travel the back roads of America
00:59looking to buy rusty gold.
01:02We make a living telling the history of America one piece at a time.
01:15Danielle's texting.
01:17She's wanting a paid vacation.
01:20What?
01:21We gave her Arbor Day off.
01:23Yeah.
01:23We gave her gas for her car.
01:25We even gave her a car.
01:26And she was talking about per diem for lunch.
01:28What are you talking about?
01:29That's what she mentioned to me.
01:30She wants us to buy her lunch.
01:31And she's talking also about gas mileage.
01:33I mean, she only dries two blocks.
01:35She's getting out of hand.
01:35She's like a wild animal.
01:37You know what we need to do?
01:38Have you ever seen the show Scared Straight?
01:39Oh, yeah.
01:40We need to do that to Danielle.
01:41There you go.
01:42Whip her in line a little bit.
01:43That's what I'm saying.
01:44We can say, Danielle, we're going to hire an HR person.
01:47You know what I'm thinking?
01:48What?
01:48The only time I've ever seen her straighten up, ever, is when her mother stops by.
01:52Dee, are you using leather cleaner on that?
01:56No.
01:56What are you doing?
01:59Dude, listen.
01:59I don't have time for this.
02:01Mikey.
02:01No, I got to go.
02:02Goodbye.
02:03That was not Mike.
02:05Yeah?
02:06Why were you rude to him?
02:07You need to call him back up.
02:09And you need to tell him, Mike, I'm sorry.
02:12All right.
02:13When Sue stops by, that's the only time I ever see her straighten up.
02:17Well, yeah.
02:17I mean, it's her mom.
02:18Of course.
02:19So what are you trying to say?
02:20Maybe we need to get Sue involved.
02:23Hire Danielle's mom.
02:25Maybe it's like a spoof or something.
02:26All right.
02:27Let's call Sue up and go, hey, you know what?
02:28We're thinking about playing a joke on Danielle.
02:31We're going to tell her that we're hiring a human resources person and see if she'll go along with it.
02:36I like the way you think.
02:37Oh, you know what I mean?
02:38That's what I'm talking about.
02:39Hello?
02:40Hello, Sue.
02:41Hey, Sue.
02:42How you doing?
02:42Frank and Mike here.
02:44We've got something we want to run past you.
02:47We're trying to keep Danielle in line.
02:49And we've come up with the idea of hiring a human resources person.
02:54Are you thinking of me?
02:55We can employ you for a little while.
02:58Get Danielle back on track.
02:59We'd appreciate it if you could help us with that.
03:01Sure.
03:02So it's kind of like a little bit of scared straight.
03:05That'd be awesome.
03:07All right.
03:08Bye.
03:10This is perfect.
03:12Whose idea was this?
03:13It was both of ours.
03:14It was mine.
03:15Oh.
03:18Frank and I are in the great state of Alabama.
03:21We get a call from Danielle.
03:22And she says, you know what, guys?
03:24I got a hot lead.
03:25It's in a laundromat.
03:26I can't believe that we're going to pick a laundromat.
03:29Just think.
03:30If we pick something that's dirty, we'll wash it right there.
03:33I like the way you think.
03:34Oh, you know what I mean?
03:35That's what I'm talking about.
03:36Coin laundry.
03:37Awesome.
03:38All right.
03:38I'm going to grab a flyer here.
03:40Do it.
03:41What are you doing?
03:42Frank.
03:44Hey, boopie.
03:45What do you got?
03:45I got the drop-off service, dude.
03:48Oh, my God.
03:50I got some dirty laundry.
03:51And while we're here, why not?
03:54Hello.
03:55That's cool.
03:56Hello.
03:56Hey, you Linda?
03:57Yeah.
03:58Hey, I'm Mike.
03:58Hollis, how you doing?
03:59All right.
04:00Frank Fritz.
04:01Hollis.
04:02The sign up there said drop-off service.
04:03That's right.
04:04All right, to drop-off?
04:04We can do it.
04:05Cool.
04:05Here's a flyer of ours.
04:08Hey, Danny was saying you guys put a lot of windshield time in, just like we do.
04:11Yeah.
04:12That's cool.
04:12We're truckers.
04:14And we've been trucking for 28 years.
04:18This is a room full of stuff.
04:20You guys did collect some stuff.
04:23All right.
04:23This is cool, man.
04:26This doesn't look like a 30-year collection.
04:29It looks like a 60-year collection.
04:31These guys have been buying stuff mile after mile, possibly more than me and Frankie.
04:36So, did you guys specialize in anything?
04:38Yeah.
04:39Junk.
04:39Junk.
04:44These people have been collecting for years, and they've also been all across America.
04:49In these things.
04:51I got six.
04:52Anything with advertising you bought, huh?
04:54Who knows what they might have?
04:56What's this here?
04:57All right, here we got here.
05:00This is...
05:01Wow.
05:02An old Victrola.
05:03This would have been like a picnic model.
05:06Imagine that.
05:07Out with your lady alongside the river.
05:09Yeah.
05:09Little shade tree.
05:11Victrola's were made by the Victor Talking Machines Company.
05:14They got bought out by RCA in 1929.
05:16And that famous RCA dog logo you see, they got from the Victor Company.
05:20This design is elegant.
05:21And in its day, it was a high-tech music player.
05:24Does it work?
05:26I couldn't tell you.
05:27It saved my life.
05:28The crank's stuck on it.
05:30You know what?
05:30It's more of just a display piece, unless someone was actually going to repair it.
05:43How much you'll give?
05:44How much do I want to give for it?
05:46Be serious now.
05:48I'm serious.
05:50Let me sit here.
05:52I do 10.
05:54I'm not sure.
05:58How about 20?
05:5925?
06:00Yeah.
06:01I mean, I've got to do some major rebuild here.
06:0325 bucks?
06:04All right, my friend.
06:10Whoa.
06:11Now, this is a toy section.
06:12You guys have bought quite a few toys.
06:14This is Frank's section right here.
06:15Yeah.
06:15I'm a real big toy collector, and I love to see antique toys.
06:19This is Rodeo Joe.
06:20He jumps up and down.
06:21Does it work?
06:23Oh, there he goes.
06:24Rodeo Joe is made by the Marks Company, and they were one of the biggest manufacturers
06:27of toys in the early 1930s, all the way up to the 1980s.
06:31And you've got to have Rodeo Joe.
06:33It's really hard to find them to work.
06:35This one has its original hat.
06:37It's in great condition.
06:38The spring's not broke on it.
06:40It's a great item.
06:41What do you got on this guy?
06:43Well, we've got to get in the 80s, don't you think?
06:46In the 80s?
06:46My hair's still in the 90s on my clothes.
06:49Believe me.
06:51How about 75, Linda?
06:53You can do 80.
06:54Yeah, that's about it.
06:57Okay.
06:58Good.
06:5880 bucks?
06:59Yeah, that'll work.
06:59All right.
07:01You guys got a good eye.
07:03I mean, the stuff you've been buying's nice.
07:05I'd have had more if Linda would have had to cut me out of the money.
07:08Linda's holding the purse strings?
07:10Yeah.
07:12Don't tell anyone what's under there.
07:15They got some good stuff.
07:17Duh, what's this motorcycle jacket?
07:19Wow.
07:19I wore that coat to Daytona.
07:23So you rode to Daytona from here on your bike?
07:27Yeah.
07:27Well, that's the only way to go.
07:28Oh, yeah.
07:45This is...
07:46That's your original jacket?
07:47What year did I tell you?
07:4848?
07:48You told me.
07:4948.
07:50I can't remember exactly, but I've never been down with that coat on.
07:54See that?
07:54So it's your lucky coat?
07:55Yeah.
07:56This is Hollis' late 1940s leather coat.
07:59Anytime you see leather in this kind of shape, you gotta buy it.
08:03Next to it is a 1960s shop coat.
08:06Very cool.
08:07I've gotta try to have both these items.
08:09Would you be interested in selling your lucky coat?
08:11Yeah, I'd sell it.
08:12How about 125 on this one and 75 on this one?
08:16These are not my domain.
08:17What?
08:18I cannot believe he's telling you he's gonna sell them.
08:21Maybe two bills for both of them.
08:23You're giving in that easy?
08:25I don't believe it.
08:26What do you mean?
08:27Am I getting all the money?
08:30All right, 200 bucks?
08:31All right.
08:32A lot of collectors have that emotional attachment.
08:34These guys had none.
08:36If we saw something and we liked it, they'd put a number on it.
08:39Is it ticking?
08:41No, it's broke.
08:42How about 15?
08:4415?
08:45Yeah.
08:45Good deal.
08:46Yeah.
08:47You wanna sell this doctor's bag?
08:48Yes, sir.
08:49How about, uh...
08:50Like 20 bucks on that?
08:52Yeah.
08:53Good thing on that, Linda.
08:55Oh, how about $10?
08:56A cool little piece, got New York on it.
08:59Yeah, yeah.
09:00$10?
09:00Good deal.
09:02How about this airplane cigarette lighter?
09:04How about your own a gift?
09:05How about 20?
09:06Yeah.
09:07I think that's good enough, don't you?
09:08All right, 20 bucks.
09:11This is a good pick because it's diverse, it's unusual, it's eclectic.
09:16These are the kind of things I need to fill my stores.
09:21I like this Minnie Pearl poster.
09:22Where'd you guys get that at?
09:24Some things we can remember, like yesterday, some things we'd say, where did that come from?
09:28How long have you had it?
09:30A long time.
09:31To me, it looks like it has some age to it.
09:33Minnie Pearl was a country comedian that started performing in the late 1930s.
09:37Her real name was Sarah Colley.
09:39She made a name for herself on the Grand Old Opry, and then later on, on Hee Haw.
09:43Everybody loves Minnie Pearl.
09:45And she'd go, howdy.
09:47Yeah.
09:48And she wore a hat with a price tag hand out.
09:50We've been there many times.
09:51I've been to the Opry, too.
09:53It's almost like a religious experience being there.
09:55Absolutely, absolutely.
09:56When you walk into the Cathedral of Country Music.
09:58We're going to miss the old guys.
09:59What are you thinking on the Minnie Pearl poster?
10:02What do you think?
10:04Let me off.
10:05Making an offer?
10:06About 50 bucks.
10:07No.
10:08All right.
10:08How about 70 bucks?
10:14I'm good with that.
10:15Are you?
10:15You good with that?
10:16Yeah.
10:16That seems to be like we're hovering around that number.
10:19So 50 and 70 seems like a spot where you're at.
10:21But what you've got to do is tell her that I'm supposed to get part of that money.
10:25Oh, okay.
10:26Well, do you want me to pay you or her?
10:27No, me.
10:28Hey, she has the last word.
10:30Oh, good.
10:31I'm going to remember that.
10:32That's who I'm going to then.
10:35Oh, Frank.
10:36There you go, buddy.
10:37This is a great pick and we're getting a lot of good stuff.
10:40But it's always a race against time to find that one big item.
10:49Holy moly.
10:50It's probably an early form of...
10:52Getting oxygen.
10:54That comes from an Oldsmobile dealership.
10:57Really?
10:58This is a very unusual piece.
11:00How about 100 bucks?
11:01Daddy was offered $400 for it at one time.
11:04Really?
11:04Yeah.
11:04I'm changing gears in my mind.
11:07My $100 offer is definitely off the table.
11:09$400.
11:21Holy moly.
11:22This is called the ozone.
11:24It's an oxygen vapor generator.
11:26It's probably an early form of...
11:30Getting oxygen.
11:31I thought it was a Victrola when I first looked at it.
11:34It was actually a medical device.
11:35This is like a modern day vaporizer.
11:38This would have been something that somebody would have used in home.
11:41Probably would have had to have some real money
11:43to be able to have your own oxygen vapor machine in the house.
11:46That's what I was thinking.
12:00How much would something like this be?
12:03I mean, don't make me have to use it.
12:06I'd say about $175.
12:09$175?
12:10Mm-hmm.
12:11Let me think on that.
12:12I don't know how much...
12:14Nice old cabinet.
12:15It's got a great cabinet, but I don't know...
12:16You don't see something like that every day.
12:19It's got to be $1,800 maybe.
12:21Yeah, I would say it's definitely...
12:23It plugs into the wall, so it couldn't be...
12:26It's got to be...
12:26It doesn't...
12:27Where'd you see that?
12:27I didn't know that.
12:28There's a plug in the back here.
12:29Well, I'm nervous.
12:30So, see, this would plug...
12:31This plugs into the wall, so...
12:33Oh, man, I just dropped my price.
12:34I just dropped a lot because that would be electricity, you know what I mean?
12:38Yep, you're right.
12:40I mean, I'd take a chance on it for $75.
12:43I mean, just...
12:44I mean, I don't know what the market is on oxygen vapor machines, but it's kind of cool.
12:50It is.
12:51What about $90?
12:54I'd split it with you at $80.
12:56There we go.
12:57You and I stay on $80.
12:58Yeah.
12:59Oh!
13:01$80?
13:01It's going to go home, right?
13:03It takes a special guy, you know what I mean?
13:05You know what it took today?
13:06Yeah.
13:06It took me.
13:08I like Frank.
13:09He was just like a little teddy bear.
13:11He reminded me of my dad.
13:13My dad was short.
13:14He looks so much like my father.
13:16Yeah, he's a sweetie.
13:17You got one side?
13:18Yeah.
13:18One, two, three.
13:20I bought this oxygen vapor machine for $80.
13:23I'm going to try to sell it for $200.
13:26I laid down $200 for both these motorcycle jackets.
13:29I'm going to ask $400.
13:31Yeah.
13:32I shelled out $70 for this mini pearl poster.
13:35I'm going to ask $150.
13:38Thanks for letting us look through your stuff.
13:40You're welcome.
13:41It was an honor.
13:42It was a great time.
13:43You guys got a good eye.
13:44A lot of people travel throughout their own community, maybe their own state, but they
13:48don't put the miles in like these guys do.
13:50That's the same exact fabric that Frank and I are cut from.
13:54We see you rolling down the road.
13:55My handle's the bearded charmer.
13:56And I'm the picker man.
13:58All right.
13:58All right, guys.
13:59See you later.
13:59Bye, guys.
14:00I'm not a negotiator at all.
14:03See ya.
14:04See ya.
14:05Hollis used to be, but Frank and Mike put a spell on him today.
14:10Hold up, hold up.
14:16I forgot my laundry.
14:21What are you doing?
14:22I forgot my laundry, dude.
14:25Dork.
14:34Frankie and I are burning diesel at 80 mile an hour into Georgia.
14:37We're having fun.
14:38Look at that.
14:39Dude, there's the boiled nuts.
14:40Look at that.
14:40Oh, he's got pickles.
14:41Oh, man.
14:42That's some good stuff.
14:42We're coming back.
14:43Look at that guy.
14:44Jams.
14:44Oh, yeah.
14:44That dude's got it going on.
14:45Some areas are very old-time Southern.
14:48There's a lot of opportunities down here for pickers like us.
14:52Hey, Danny D, what's up?
14:54Hey, how you doing, boys?
14:55Hey, what do you think of this?
14:56What's your mom doing?
14:58Maybe she'd be interested in an HR position in the shop.
15:01My mom?
15:01Human resources, really?
15:03Really?
15:04Are you trying to kill me?
15:06See, I told you.
15:07You want me to work for my mom on a daily basis?
15:09She would be the person that you would go to to ask for, like, your vacation.
15:15Just normal stuff that me and Mike would probably poo-poo.
15:18I think you've lost your damn mind.
15:20I'm putting them wrong with you.
15:22You guys are driving crazy.
15:23I emailed you a lead for a guy named Bob, the junk man.
15:27Figure out the rest yourself.
15:28Bye-bye.
15:28We got just the reaction that we were hoping for from Danielle.
15:32But now Danielle has left us to fend for ourself on the next pick.
15:35I don't care what the GPS says.
15:37The GPS says we're in the water.
15:39Does it feel like we're in water?
15:40No.
15:40Then forget the GPS.
15:41I'm going back old school situation on this map here.
15:44Pulling this marathon station here.
15:46We need some gas anyway.
15:47You pump, and I'll get my mind working.
15:50All right.
15:51Here's the deal.
15:53There's where we came from, right off the 40 there.
15:56If you come across here, all we got to do is go down here, like, maybe four or five blocks,
16:01and take a right right there.
16:02Sometimes our GPS lets us down.
16:04But we're not going to let Danielle have the satisfaction, the thinking that she does everything for us.
16:09We'll find the pick on our own.
16:11All right.
16:12Let's rock it out.
16:20Danny's sending this to a guy named Bob, the junk man.
16:22He's got some Civil War stuff.
16:24This could be a great pick.
16:25This is it right here.
16:26Wow, this looks just like a residential house.
16:27This is it?
16:28Yeah, this is it.
16:29You know, my first impression, this just looks like a residential house.
16:32But you know what?
16:32You can't judge a book by its cover.
16:34He could have amazing stuff inside.
16:37Hey.
16:37How are you doing?
16:38You junk man, Bob?
16:39That's junk man, Bob.
16:40Nice to meet you.
16:41Nice to meet you, too.
16:42Hey, I know you talked to Danny on the phone, but here's a list of the kind of stuff that
16:46we buy.
16:47We buy anything from Vespas to BB guns to license plates to taxidermy.
16:52Daniel said you got, like, some tonnage.
16:54Oh, no.
16:55You got, like, a buildup.
16:57I'm a hoarder, but there's no dead cats.
16:59All right.
17:00When I first met Bob, I could see he was just my kind of guy.
17:04Come on in.
17:04All right.
17:05Just a laid-back dude, pair of jeans on.
17:08So how'd you get your nickname?
17:10Well, I've run the road for United Van Lines, and I'd be out there in different cities, and I'd collect
17:16stuff on my days off.
17:17I would go out and hunt stuff.
17:20I'd go to flea markets.
17:21I'd even stop the tractor-trailer at yard sales.
17:24People ask me, are you here to buy me out?
17:27And I have.
17:28Well, you got me all jacked up.
17:29Can we look around?
17:30Yeah, let's go on through here.
17:32All right.
17:34This is where the Civil War collection is.
17:36Okay.
17:39Bob had a mishmash of items.
17:40I mean, it's not exactly what you call a hoarder, because you can still see the floor.
17:44This is kind of no rhyme or reason in here.
17:48But when he started pulling out the Civil War stuff, I was getting excited, because Civil War stuff is hot.
18:22I have a muster roll.
18:23Stains, discoloration, creases, and especially tears.
18:27How much do you value this at?
18:29Uh, I don't know.
18:34This muster roll is amazing, but I can see Bob isn't sure if he wants to sell it.
18:38Mm-hmm.
18:39What else you got?
18:40Sometimes it's a good strategy to put something on the back burner.
18:44All right.
18:44Let him get used to thinking about selling it.
18:46This flute was carried by Joseph Carroll Gillette.
18:50Was carried all the way through the Civil War, fought in Antietam, Gettysburg.
18:56Hearing the words Gettysburg and Antietam has got me standing at attention.
19:00These are two of the most famous, most collected battles in the Civil War.
19:03If this flute was at both, we're talking serious dollars here.
19:21Where'd you find that?
19:22Um, a friend of mine, Mike, had a little junk removal business, and he had this flute out
19:29of a clean-out in Ramsey, New Jersey.
19:32We do have a problem here.
19:33This flute looks old enough to be Civil War, but the only thing we have to go on is this
19:37index card.
19:38For now, we're going to move forward based on this information here, because as a picker,
19:42you've got to work with what you've got.
19:44Back then, what did Mike value this flute at?
19:48$150 he sold it to me for.
19:50Okay.
19:50And then now, what do you value it at?
19:51Oh, this is a one-of-a-kind.
19:54You cannot put a price on a piece like this.
19:58Right.
19:59It's tough when you've got a seller that thinks his stuff is worth a million dollars.
20:02Bob called us.
20:03He's ready to sell.
20:05We're just going to have to approach it from a different angle.
20:07You know, Bob, I mean, I think this is a real significant piece here.
20:10We do have a friend, Eric, that deals with this stuff.
20:14I mean, he has a museum.
20:16In Gettysburg, we picked for this guy about a year ago.
20:19Come on in.
20:20All right.
20:21Oh, wow.
20:23But I've been collecting since I was a little kid.
20:26He would know a lot about this.
20:29And I know you weren't really red hot on selling the flute.
20:33Right.
20:34But would you be interested in letting us take a photo of it?
20:39Yeah, that would be great.
20:40We can send those to Eric and just get a little gist of what the value is.
20:44Okay.
20:44Even if we can't come to a number on it,
20:46at least he might be able to give you some information that you don't already know.
20:50We know a little bit about this stuff, but we're not experts.
20:53I'm not pulling the trigger on anything until we get Eric's eyes on this stuff.
20:57Hopefully, we hear some good news.
20:59Did you see this?
21:00It says road closed.
21:01There's some power on through.
21:02There's some stuff.
21:02Look at all these junk people.
21:03You know what?
21:03I'll take anything right now.
21:05Me and Frankie, we're just two strangers in the van.
21:08Hello!
21:08We're either intruders or we're guests.
21:11When we roll up onto somebody's property, it can be very dangerous.
21:14Easy.
21:15This is the building I'm interested in seeing.
21:17Okay.
21:17This thing looks bruiser.
21:19I've got my fingers crossed for good news on Eric calling us back.
21:23All right.
21:23In the meantime, there's a whole other building to dig through.
21:26All right.
21:26This is my hoarder.
21:28Touch off.
21:29My bracket.
21:30The hoard situation.
21:31Junk.
21:33Junk.
21:33I can't see where you got your nickname.
21:35Yeah, this stuff's not old enough for me.
21:40What do you see?
21:41Frankie, anything?
21:42I'm looking.
21:42Unfortunately, the pickings are a little slim here.
21:44Ooh, moist towelettes.
21:46Towelettes.
21:47Stretching envelopes.
21:49We love junk, but this stuff is junk.
21:52All right.
21:53And you do have the tonnage in there.
21:54Oh, yeah.
21:55You could have like a 24-hour bonfire.
21:57Basically, this whole pick looks like it's hinging on the Civil War items.
22:02VMS.
22:03Hey, this is that Eric guy calling from Gettysburg.
22:05Okay.
22:06Can you give us a few minutes?
22:07Sure.
22:07We'll get you up back to the house.
22:08All right.
22:08Sounds good.
22:09Okay.
22:09I have no idea what Eric's going to say.
22:12This is the call I've been waiting for to save this pick.
22:14Eric, what's up?
22:16What's up, dude?
22:16Hey, guys.
22:17So, if a muster roll is associated with a big battle like Gettysburg, it can bill for as
22:22much as $1,000.
22:24Yours is December of 62.
22:26There wasn't really anything historically significant going on at that time.
22:30And with the condition of yours, with the tape stains and everything else, you're looking
22:35at about $200, which is around the market value.
22:38So, you're saying with the tape stains the way it is right now, it's $200.
22:42That's high side?
22:43Yeah.
22:43I tried to get it from less.
22:45Even if it were in better condition, it's not from a particular battle.
22:48That really affects its value.
22:50Now, about the sleuths.
22:51Going off the index card, which you can't really validate, I ran the guy's name through our
22:56database.
22:57I saw him listed as a private and not a musician.
23:01That makes me think this is a post-Civil War thing, which is not good.
23:06Probably something that was played by a soldier in the G.A.R. after the war.
23:10G.A.R. stood for Grand Army of the Republic.
23:13It was a fraternal organization formed after the Civil War to help veterans stay in touch
23:17with each other.
23:17Unfortunately, that kind of kills the value of the flute.
23:33There's really no proof that this flute even belonged to the Sky Gillette.
23:38So, I think the flute is worth about $300.
23:41But I would try to get it a little cheaper.
23:42In a way, I'm relieved that Eric doesn't think this flute's from a particular battle.
23:46It's hard to buy anything from just the information on an index card.
23:50Eric just made our decision for us.
23:51Thanks a lot for your help, Eric.
23:53Thanks a lot, buddy.
23:53All right, thanks, man.
23:54Next time we're in Pennsylvania, we'll look you up.
23:56Take it easy, guys.
23:57Bye-bye.
23:57Bye, buddy.
23:58All right, bye.
23:58The flute is off the table for us, but at least we can give Bob some information about
24:02the item.
24:03Now, everything is riding on that muster roll.
24:05We talked to Eric, and one of the things he shared with us was, this is a great piece.
24:12Okay, obviously, there's a lot of information here, but with the tape and the condition that
24:16it's in, he said retail on it is $200.
24:21Okay.
24:21He said it's still a great document.
24:23I'd do $170.
24:25I'm not big on selling it.
24:28This pic is officially dead in the water.
24:31I mean, Bob is just too emotionally attached to this thing, but at least we were able
24:34to give him some information about the flute.
24:36The great thing about his museum is they have a huge database, and he learned from this gentleman's
24:41name, he was a private, like you said, but after his name, there was no musician.
24:46So that's why he's thinking that this is a host war.
24:50Okay.
24:51We're kind of in an awkward position.
24:52I mean, we have to tell Bob that his flute's not worth as much money as we thought it was.
24:56You have to be delicate.
24:57It would probably be around $300.
24:59Yeah.
25:00I figured it would probably be $500, maybe $1,000, but being a history piece, it's kind
25:09of hard to put a price on that.
25:10All right, my friend.
25:12This is all part of the job.
25:13You can't win them all.
25:15We got to keep on picking.
25:16Hey.
25:17Take care.
25:17Keep us in mind now.
25:18We had a good time.
25:18All right.
25:19Thanks for letting us look around.
25:20All righty.
25:20See you later.
25:21Take care.
25:21All righty.
25:22I gave Mike and Frank my business card.
25:25I hope they call me because you never know what I come across.
25:29Take care.
25:36This area that we're at right now kind of looks good.
25:39I mean, this looks good.
25:40Everybody's got stuff outside.
25:43All right.
25:43You keep your eyes peeled, son.
25:44Frank and I are freestyling on the back roads of South Carolina.
25:47We haven't heard from Danielle in a while.
25:49She's been giving us the cold shoulder ever since we told her we're hiring her mom.
25:53Oh, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
25:54Check this place out.
25:55Check this place out.
25:55Check this place out right here.
25:56Okay, for one, there is no place right there.
25:58Let's just pull back this road.
26:00That's a dirt road.
26:01So what?
26:01Just pull back the dirt road there.
26:02That's probably someone's driveway, dude.
26:04So what?
26:04Don't worry about it, dude.
26:05If we go all the way down someone's driveway like that and it's a bad situation, you can't
26:10get back out.
26:10You're committed.
26:11Remember that one time that we pulled down that dirt road and we found that guy?
26:14Do you have anything that you might be interested in selling?
26:16You kind of interrupted me.
26:19Oh, I'm sorry.
26:20All right.
26:21Better time to come back or?
26:22You are disturbing me.
26:24Did you see this?
26:25Road closed.
26:27Just power on through.
26:27Are you going to call a tow truck?
26:28There won't be a tow truck if you power through.
26:31Sometimes you just got to take a chance.
26:32If you don't take a chance, you don't receive anything.
26:35Well, junk cars, couple signs.
26:36You know what?
26:37I'll take anything right now.
26:38That's what I'm talking about.
26:42Hello?
26:43We're down south right now and a lot of people have guns.
26:46Me and Frankie, we're just two strangers in the van.
26:48You're hand on it.
26:49I'll handle it.
26:50We're either intruders or we're guests.
26:52When we roll up onto somebody's property, it can be very dangerous.
26:58Hello.
26:58Hey, how you doing?
27:00Fine.
27:00Hey, I'm Mike.
27:02Hello.
27:02Nice to meet you.
27:03I'm Frank.
27:03How you doing?
27:04I'm good.
27:05Here comes the most pretty lady you've ever seen in your life.
27:08She has a country smile a mile wide.
27:11Let me call with my son.
27:13Okay.
27:13Okay.
27:13What's your name?
27:14Ligon?
27:15Man, nice to meet you.
27:16My name's Frank.
27:17How you doing?
27:18Good.
27:18You?
27:18We buy and sell things.
27:20This is kind of like a little list of some of the stuff that we buy.
27:23Licensed junk collector.
27:24That's cool, man.
27:25Where do you get one of those?
27:26Oh, I buy it off the internet.
27:28Do you buy and sell for a living?
27:29What do you guys do?
27:30Nah, just a hobby.
27:31We're looking to fill up the van.
27:32So if you've got time, we'd love to look around.
27:34The van ain't big enough.
27:37I like this guy.
27:38It's all right.
27:39Me and Mama have 10 buildings out there.
27:41You know, we can go ramble in.
27:42Okay, really?
27:42I've seen quite a few from the road there.
27:44Good day.
27:44You collect stuff, too?
27:45It was my husband and him.
27:47Okay.
27:47And my husband's passed away, so.
27:49Oh, I'm sorry about that.
27:50It's in your blood.
27:51I got it in my blood from Daddy and his Daddy.
27:54Well, can we look around a little bit?
27:56Oh, yeah.
27:56Sure.
27:56All right, cool.
27:57Cool.
27:57I couldn't wait until I got home and said, hey, Daddy, look what I bought.
28:01Where'd your gear for it?
28:02And I'd tell him, well, you got a good deal.
28:04You got stuck on that, boy.
28:06This right here is most of the way I worked on stuff out here.
28:09So what kind of cars you were storing?
28:11Model A's.
28:11Model A Ford.
28:12That was the only interest, Calvin.
28:14He had mostly was the Model A's.
28:15That's what he liked, though.
28:16Well, he probably can relate to those.
28:17He grew up around them.
28:18Yeah, he grew up in a garage.
28:20His dad's shop.
28:21In a garage.
28:22Ellis' garage.
28:23Was that local here?
28:24Yeah.
28:25This is where all your rides are?
28:26Yeah.
28:31This was your dad's?
28:32Mm-hmm.
28:33He was driving this in his 70s?
28:3581 years old, he was riding around town in it.
28:37All of these cars were his father's.
28:40How long has he been gone?
28:42Since December 22nd.
28:44Okay.
28:45So what's it like for you coming out here right now and just being around his things?
28:50It brings tears to you.
28:51I know.
28:52But when Lynn starts talking about his father's cars, he starts getting really emotional.
28:57And it's very touching to see this because it's not just the car.
29:00It's a connection to his past with his father.
29:03The nice thing is your dad's living through these.
29:06I mean, you almost feel like your dad's with you.
29:08We'd have been with him almost 61 years would be next month.
29:14And it was good years.
29:16This thing's street legal?
29:18No.
29:19We're riding Christmas braids.
29:21Anything goes into riding that Christmas braids here.
29:25He used to race old cars.
29:27So he said he wanted to make a hot rod.
29:28So we took that two-door coupe there and painted it up.
29:32I love it.
29:33What are these things?
29:34They look like.
29:35That's some of his old liquor steels, huh?
29:37We bought them as copper and brass.
29:39And we kept them all instead of selling any.
29:43So these are all just pieces of steels.
29:45Everything is copper.
29:47There are so many pieces to this contraption.
29:49This thing is like a hillbilly Lego set.
29:52These deer hunters would find them in the woods.
29:54This is a scrap weight, right?
29:55Yeah, and they would bring them and sell them to us.
29:57And we would keep them, you know.
29:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
30:00That's fine.
30:00You're a scouser item.
30:01Yeah.
30:02Gotcha.
30:02Because, you know, there ain't no more of this stuff no more.
30:04This is your old school stuff here.
30:06This is old-timey.
30:07Yeah.
30:07When I'm looking at these still parts, I get excited, man,
30:10because the guys that made these stills and worked them,
30:13they were good old boy outlaws that were living on the edge.
30:16This is really cool stuff.
30:18The steam that went in here would come out over here
30:22and then go into the condenser.
30:24Okay.
30:24Gotcha.
30:24So, Lynn, how do you know so much about moonshining?
30:27I was fixing to ask that.
30:30You're going to ask the same thing?
30:32Yes.
30:32Well, we used to have a bunch of moonshine bootleggers in town here,
30:35and they sort of, I would question about it,
30:38and they would school me on it.
30:39We actually made a steel.
30:41Me and a fellow did,
30:42and made liquor under my carport one time.
30:45Mama didn't know it, though.
30:50I'm going to have a talk with him after this is over.
30:52I've learned a lot today.
31:07How much for these three pieces?
31:11Mmm.
31:13$150.
31:15How about, uh, how about $100?
31:20How about $125?
31:23How much for these three pieces?
31:32Mmm.
31:35Mmm.
31:36How about, uh, how about $100?
31:42How about $1.25?
31:45How about $110?
31:49We can do that, see if she's been so good so far.
31:53How do you feel, how do you feel, Mike?
31:54I feel good.
31:56I feel good.
31:56You know, it's our first cousin price.
31:57You want to go ahead and kiss me?
31:59No.
32:00No.
32:01Right.
32:04That's what's left of a detonator.
32:09Uh-huh.
32:10What's up with the Jack's Beer Clock?
32:12Did it work at one time, or?
32:14Yeah.
32:15May work now if I plug it in, eh?
32:16Plug it.
32:17The Jack's Beer Clock.
32:18This is a killer piece.
32:20You know, this is a down south beer down here.
32:22You know, I can't find this stuff in the Midwest where I live.
32:25Oh, yeah.
32:26Is it supposed to light up?
32:28It could light up.
32:29Let's see.
32:29It's plastic in the back, and somebody put...
32:31Nope, no light up.
32:33What would you have to have for this?
32:35$75.
32:36Dollars?
32:37Yeah, I'd try.
32:39If it lit up, baby.
32:40I got to go shopping.
32:42Yeah.
32:43Somebody taped it in there.
32:44See that part where they taped it?
32:45It didn't light up.
32:46It's just a standard clock.
32:48A little bit of the front of it's kind of a little damaged on it.
32:51Well, what would you give for it?
32:54I'd do $40 on it.
32:55That'd be the best I could.
32:57And he wouldn't hurt my feelings by any means.
33:01I'll do it.
33:02All right.
33:02It's impossible to hurt his feelings.
33:04It's impossible to hurt my feelings.
33:05He's like an Armadillo.
33:06I didn't even know it was here.
33:07Yeah, you didn't even know it was here?
33:09After data has passed away,
33:11all his junk is her junk now.
33:13Oh, my.
33:14Because me and her walked around a month ago,
33:16and she said,
33:17I didn't know we had this much stuff.
33:20This was the first building that was ever put here.
33:23This was?
33:24Yeah.
33:24So this is probably the oldest stuff, Mike.
33:32How much for eight of these pieces here?
33:34What are you thinking, Mama?
33:36Make me an offer.
33:38Eight of them?
33:38Yes.
33:39How about $100?
33:45How about $110?
33:49I'm not even going to try to talk that sweet face down.
33:54I was real proud of her.
33:56Because this is really not her speed here.
33:59Not her style there, you know.
34:03That'll be $1 a pound there.
34:05How about $2.75?
34:09He has a lot of gas and oil signs here.
34:12And gas and oil is very popular, very easy to sell.
34:15It's got some wear on it.
34:16How much?
34:17$75.
34:18Make it $60 and I'll take it.
34:21Ooh.
34:22What's up with this banner?
34:23She's pretty sexy.
34:25Check him out.
34:25He's looking at her.
34:26Uh-huh.
34:27I know.
34:28Yeah, I'd go $2.25 on it.
34:29He's going back to Iowa.
34:31We've been over every square inch of this property, but there's still one building to check out.
34:36This looks like your little man cave here.
34:37Yeah.
34:39Oh, wow.
34:40There's a lot of stuff on display.
34:41There's stuff on shelves.
34:42There's stuff in glass cases.
34:43So this is stuff that you guys collected together right here?
34:46Yeah.
34:46What are those down there, Frankie, in that frame?
34:48Which one?
34:49Those coins or something?
34:49No, they're loonies.
34:51They're called loonies?
34:52Yeah.
34:52They were used in the mill up here, and they paid the workers off in loonies, and they had
34:58a mill store up here, and you spent them back in the mill store.
35:01Really?
35:02And that's the only way you were paid?
35:04And then you had to spend your money that the store, that the mill owned themselves.
35:10Yeah.
35:10Can we see them?
35:11When Lynn was telling me about these loonies, my mind was flashing back to that Tennessee
35:14Ernie Ford song, 16 Tons, sold my soul to the company's store.
35:34So there's 10, I can't say, let's say it for me, he says 10, and then what's it say?
35:38These are 10, they're 10s, they're 25s, 5s.
35:41Tell me, like, what's the words?
35:42Calhoun Mills store.
35:43Right.
35:43They all say that?
35:44Yeah, non-transferable.
35:45The only way they got paid was with these coins.
35:48That seems strange.
35:49I mean, so it's beautiful for electricity and stuff like that.
35:51I mean, no.
35:52Well, they lived in the mill houses.
35:55They had a mill village, see?
35:56Every one of them was on a street that looked just alike, you know?
35:59Well, are they still there?
36:00Yes, a lot of them are still there.
36:01Wow.
36:02When we get into a small town like this, and we can learn about its local history, the
36:06roots of it, it really paints a picture of what it was like to live in the deep south
36:10back in the day.
36:11What's up with that spaceship clock?
36:13Where'd you get that at?
36:13That comes from an Oldsmobile dealership.
36:16This is a very unusual piece.
36:18I've never seen one like this before.
36:20There's a little spaceship on that.
36:21Mm-hmm.
36:22Just like the spaceship.
36:22They said it was a Oldsmobile rocket, you know?
36:24Yeah.
36:2588 rocket.
36:25The Delta, the 88 rocket, yeah.
36:26Got a light in the back of it.
36:28Oh, yeah.
36:28It does got a light right there.
36:29I don't know anything about this clock, but I do know that the 1950s were the golden
36:34age of sci-fi culture.
36:36If this thing is really from that era, a lot of people are going to be interested in
36:39it, especially because it's unique.
36:41Is this something you'd consider selling?
36:43Well, it was dead, as you know, and I'd say, yeah, we'd probably sell it.
36:47Do you know where you found it?
36:49Down around the Columbia area somewhere.
36:51Did you ever plug it in?
36:51Did you ever see it?
36:52No, we never have.
36:53We just never rewired it?
36:55Yeah.
36:55How about, uh, how about a hundred bucks?
37:00I'd like to get more than that part, because, you know.
37:02I know.
37:03You know what I'm saying to you?
37:03Yeah.
37:04Daddy had two or three people tried to buy it, you know, to Oldsmobile collectors.
37:08What did they offer?
37:09I know he was offered $400 for it at one time.
37:12Really?
37:12Yeah.
37:14$400 for it?
37:15$400.
37:15If an Oldsmobile collector offered $400 for this, it's got to be something.
37:19It's unique.
37:20Frank and I buy a lot of transportation stuff.
37:23I've never seen one before.
37:24I'm changing gears in my mind.
37:26My $100 offer is definitely off the table.
37:29$400.
37:31Well, would you take $400?
37:37$400.
37:40Well, would you take $400?
37:48Yeah.
37:50It's an honor to buy it.
37:51I very much appreciate it.
37:52All right.
37:53I took a chance on this Oldsmobile clock for $400.
37:56I'm going to have Danny set up an appraisal.
37:59I bought these steel parts for $110.
38:01I'm going to ask $300.
38:04I bought the Jack's beer clock for $40.
38:07I think I can get $75.
38:10Thank you very much.
38:11Thank you, Mama.
38:11Thank you, Mama.
38:11Thank you, Mama.
38:13You made Lynn's day.
38:15All right.
38:15Thank you, Mama.
38:16And that is day.
38:17Yeah.
38:17Thank you so much.
38:19There comes a time you have to let things go.
38:21And it was a good time to do it.
38:23A fun time to let it go.
38:26Right.
38:26I suck at that motion.
38:28Sweet picking, guys.
38:29When you freestyle, it's a shake of the dice.
38:32You never know what's going to happen.
38:33If we're just pulling in a dirt road, meeting two lovely people.
38:38See ya.
38:39What better does it get?
38:40We're spending it good.
38:44I'm itching to get back to Iowa.
38:45The stuff we're buying now is totally different than the stuff we bought five years ago.
38:49I think so, too.
38:50I've got a good feeling about the clock I bought.
38:52I can't wait to see what the appraiser says.
38:54Iowa, here we come.
39:00Just keep kicking.
39:01You're fine.
39:01It's getting gas.
39:02All right.
39:04Dave, the silver fox shows up.
39:06Hold up.
39:07Good night, boys.
39:08Dave's been picking longer than Frank and I.
39:10This guy is like our mentor.
39:11Anything that we find that's really unusual, we always call Dave.
39:14Oh, there it is.
39:16Yeah, what do you think?
39:17Oh, man.
39:18He's digging this thing.
39:19I can tell.
39:19What's the story of that?
39:20Now, Danielle sent me photos, but you said it was out of a dealership?
39:23Well, the guy that we got this from, he said his dad bought this from a guy at an auction,
39:29and everything at the auction was Oldsmobile.
39:31He was thinking that it was an Oldsmobile dealer promo.
39:34Like, this would have went something with a dealer.
39:37And then he said that a guy came by his house, a big Oldsmobile collector, remember?
39:41Mm-hmm.
39:41And he offered him 400 bucks for it.
39:43And that was years ago.
39:45I was thinking, you know, this thing's got to be at least worth 400 bucks.
39:48You know, I was willing to take a chance at it.
39:50If that guy was willing to throw down 400 because of that, then I'll do the same.
39:54And he was showing us the face with the rocket, and that's the symbol they had back in the 40s.
39:59Like the Delta 88 or something?
40:01Yeah, the 40s.
40:01Rocket 88.
40:02Rocket 88.
40:03There you go.
40:03Okay.
40:04All right, so what can you tell us about it?
40:06Well, here's what I know.
40:07In 1949, they came out with the Rocket 88.
40:11That was kind of a precursor to the muscle car.
40:13I mean, it was that popular.
40:27You would think that, wow, this is, uh...
40:29That thing's cool.
40:30Oldsmobile.
40:31It's pretty awesome, man.
40:32Yeah, it's pretty neat, but it's not an Oldsmobile clock.
40:37It's not?
40:38No.
40:39When Dave said, it's not an Oldsmobile clock, my heart broke.
40:43Really?
40:43No.
40:44You'd think it was, and I think probably that guy, because he had an Oldsmobile dealership,
40:48thought, hey, I'm going to have this in my store.
40:49I threw down $400 for this clock because of that story.
40:54If you look up Oldsmobile clocks, a lot of them were neon, and they had this, like, Saturn figure
40:59around the clock.
41:00But this, it's actually what they called a rocket clock.
41:04It's a lion's hair clock.
41:05Their heyday was, like, 1950, 1960s.
41:08They made a lot of figural clocks.
41:11Ponies, owls, you name it.
41:13It's from what they call the atomic era, or space age era.
41:17This clock has that classic look from all those sci-fi movies you saw in the day, Forbidden
41:21Planet, The Day the Earth Stood Still, you know, the space age era.
41:25What's neat about this, too, if you plug it in, and the light lights here, like...
41:28I saw that.
41:29I saw that with the light right there.
41:31Yeah, it's like a Christmas tree bulb.
41:33It looks almost like it's shooting off the back a little bit.
41:35Right, right.
41:35Even though it's not Oldsmobile, I mean, space age stuff, atomic stuff, that stuff's got to
41:39be very collectible.
41:41It is very collectible.
41:42It just has a great look, and it's what appeals to a lot of collectors.
41:45This is probably the third one I've seen, so it is pretty rare.
41:48Yeah, I've never seen one.
41:49Yeah, and this one is in really, really nice condition, too.
41:51Did you see it sell?
41:52What were they asking for it?
41:53I did see one sell at auction.
41:55The condition wasn't quite as nice.
41:57The finish was deteriorated on it.
42:00This one, the condition's so nice.
42:01It has the original finish on it, and it's not been cleaned or changed or anything.
42:07I value this at $700 to $800.
42:16That's good.
42:17I mean, he paid $400 for it?
42:19That's a good buy.
42:20Chapter 1, Oldsmobile Folklore.
42:23Chapter 2, Rocket Clock, $700 to $800.
42:27I'm kind of bummed a little bit that it's not an Oldsmobile Clock, but I can totally jive
42:31on the whole Atomic Era stuff.
42:33I like that stuff myself, too.
42:34I know.
42:34I love it.
42:35I think it's great.
42:35I always love coming over here because I might see something interesting and cool,
42:39and today was that day.
42:40You know, if you get an Oldsmobile guy, he's going to like that, too.
42:42The Rocket Eat, baby.
42:44That's what I'm talking about.
42:45This is the piece we're going to move forward, and we're not just going to sell the piece,
42:48but we're also going to give the person that's going to buy it the knowledge that we just
42:51learned today.
42:57Frank, how are we supposed to sell these when they're all wrapped up and no one can read them?
42:59Danny's mom has been working for about a week now as our HR person, and I got to tell
43:03you, it's been amazing.
43:05What are they?
43:06They're those old marriage certificates.
43:08Hey, what do you got on this book here?
43:09That goes with that whole kit right there, not just that one thing.
43:12Oh, that's what I'm saying.
43:12That's not even all priced together, is it?
43:14What are they doing?
43:14What?
43:15My mom is driving me crazy.
43:18Danielle has always been a handful, even as a child, and it is so fun to get back at
43:25her.
43:25I came in five minutes late today, and she busted me out.
43:29Five minutes.
43:30Well, why'd you come in five minutes late?
43:32This better be some kind of joke.
43:34I had stuff to do.
43:35I had a brush knife.
43:36You know what?
43:36You know what that sounds like, Frank?
43:37It sounds like something that you need to take up with the HR department.
43:40Yeah, that's not us anymore.
43:41Doesn't it?
43:42Yeah.
43:42Sure.
43:42She's taking away my sick...
43:45Danielle.
43:46Hi.
43:46Hey, I need to talk to you upstairs, all right?
43:49Okay.
43:50Later.
43:55It's a walk of shame.
43:56She's done.
43:57She's done.
43:58It's fun while it lasts.
