00:02Well, we know that police were called to Margaret Street here in the Brisbane CBD just after
00:06seven o'clock last night to reports that a driver had reversed into the gates here at
00:11the Brisbane synagogue and luckily didn't do too much damage, but it did bring down
00:15one of the gates.
00:16There was actually a man standing behind the gate at the time that was narrowly missed.
00:21What have police had to say about the incident?
00:25Well, they said that the driver was a 32-year-old man from Sunnybank who was known to be a
00:29victim to them.
00:30He did flee the scene, but they were able to use Polair to track him down and arrest
00:34and charge him a short time later.
00:36He's since been remanded in custody.
00:38Now, they're also saying that while they are not treating this as a terrorist incident,
00:42they are treating it as a targeted attack.
00:46Our specialist counter-terrorism officers have been involved in the investigation from the very start,
00:50and I can confirm this is not considered a terrorist incident.
00:54This is a criminal investigation.
00:56Police are considering the man's mental health and intoxication as being contributing factors.
01:02Tara, has there been any reaction from the community there?
01:06Yes, we did hear from a member of the Jewish Board of Deputies a little earlier who said,
01:10understandably, the Jewish community is devastated by what has happened here overnight.
01:14A synagogue is a sacred space, a place of prayer, reflection and community.
01:25To see its gates viciously rammed is profoundly devastating and is not dissimilar to what we have seen throughout the
01:36globe.
01:38Now, she said that there has been a meteoric rise in anti-Semitism that's been aimed at the Jewish community,
01:44and so they're now backing the state's premier in calling for stronger hate laws to be brought in.
01:49The first polluted is a visit from now on Tuesday in August 30th of December 30th of February 30th of
01:51April 31st of September 31st.
