00:03When the photographer becomes the subject, Melbourne artist Nathan Beard has won the
00:09$30,000 National Photographic Portrait Prize for a tender snapshot of his Aunty May in
00:15Thailand.
00:16She had suffered a fall at home and I was the only one in the house with her and she
00:23insisted that evening, even after the shock of the event, to bathe herself and do so independently.
00:29You can't see her face but that doesn't mean that you don't have an emotional connection
00:33to her.
00:34You might look at it and see one of your loved ones.
00:37The prize is bittersweet.
00:39May died in July.
00:41It's sort of like a final gift of hers to me.
00:45There were more than a thousand entries in this year's prize.
00:4930 finalists are now on show at the National Portrait Gallery.
00:53It truly is a celebration of portraiture in its most expanded form.
00:58Showcasing a rich diversity of style and subjects, some poignant, others powerful and plenty
01:05playful.
01:06The National Photographic Portrait Prize has been running since 2007, but this is the
01:12last year of the competition in this format.
01:16Accompanying the prize is a retrospective exhibition celebrating almost two decades of finalists.
01:22From famous faces to depictions of disaster, from the young to the young at heart, there's
01:29plenty to drink in.
01:30The photographs will be on show until October.
01:34probably
01:34back to Buzo for years.
01:35Until June.
01:36Tonight.
