A Brisbane man has been granted bail after appearing in court on terrorism charges. The charges included possessing or controlling violent extremist material.
00:00Max Belter was arrested earlier this week after police raided his home at the Gap.
00:07He was charged with two counts of possessing and controlling violent extremist material linked to a prescribed terror organisation.
00:15It's alleged during the search investigators found nationalist and racist material as well as precursor chemicals to make explosives.
00:24The 18 year old appeared in court today where his lawyers made a successful bid for bail.
00:29The court heard dozens of documents relating to the construction of explosives and firearms were allegedly found in his possession as well as an extremely graphic video of a person being killed.
00:41It also heard Mr Belter was allegedly storing chemicals used to build an improvised explosive device in his bedroom and he'd sought advice on how to purchase a firearm.
00:52Commonwealth prosecutors opposed his release arguing he showed a strong interest in violence and extremist views and was a danger to the community.
01:01His lawyer accepted the material was concerning but there was no evidence or charges suggesting his client has or will engage in acts of terrorism.
01:11He also argued it was unlikely his client would ever be ordered to serve a term of imprisonment for the charges which attract a maximum penalty of five years.
01:21A magistrate agreed and determined he could be given bail on strict conditions saying his young age, lack of criminal history, his cooperation with investigators and ongoing family support made him suitable for release.
01:34Mr Belter will be released from the watch house here this afternoon and his matter will return to court next month.
