00:00On Thursday, the Venezuelan National Assembly unanimously approved the Amnesty Law for Democratic Co-existence.
00:06Later enacted by Acting President Joseph Rodriguez, the law aims to strengthen peace and stability in the Bolivarian Republic.
00:12Correspondent Brian Meir tells us more.
00:17After weeks of deliberation, on the night of February 19th, Venezuela's National Assembly passed a law that will grant amnesty
00:24to hundreds of political prisoners
00:26who were arrested during coup attempts in 2024 and 2017.
00:32The bill was ratified unanimously with full support from government and opposition parties.
00:39You are carrying hope for Venezuela today.
00:44I greet the deputies of the Venezuelan opposition, as well as the deputies of Chavismo, of Bolivarianism.
00:54They are not new faces.
00:56There are many political actors from these last 25 years.
01:00And there are also young faces, for whom we are acting and guaranteeing the future.
01:06A future of peace, a future of coexistence.
01:11Supporters of the bill were quick to clarify that it doesn't apply to everyone.
01:15People convicted of murder, corruption, drug trafficking, and human rights violations,
01:20including public support for a U.S. invasion of Venezuela, are exempt from amnesty.
01:26The morning after the bill was ratified, Congress created a commission to guarantee that the law is properly applied.
01:35First of all, this commission will monitor compliance with what the law establishes.
01:40That is to say, those responsible for the administration of justice in the country must immediately comply.
01:49Because the law has already been published in the official cassette and has entered into force.
01:57With a series of procedures to guarantee that those individuals who were involved in the valent acts covered by this
02:03law
02:03are either released or their criminal case is dismissed.
02:09Supporters of the new bill are hailing it as an important step in re-establishing peace
02:13in a nation that's still reeling from the imperialist U.S. bombing raid
02:17and kidnapping of its elected president, Nicolas Maduro, and First Lady Celia Flores.
