00:03Holy .
00:04That's Big Mike.
00:05Somebody's in a hurry.
00:06Big Mike is one of my favorite customers.
00:09Ice cream!
00:11You never know what he's gonna bring in.
00:13This is cool.
00:14Go up nice and easy.
00:16It's always been my dream to create my very own Main Street,
00:19and now's my chance.
00:21Whatever you do, do not let this thing drop.
00:24Man, this thing is bad.
00:25I came to bring in my Xeno gum machine.
00:27I need somebody to oversee the gum machine.
00:29I was wondering if you want to take that on.
00:30I'm a little scared to give Bradley all this responsibility,
00:33but I know he can do it.
00:35It does not sound good.
00:36No, it does not.
00:37All we're gonna do is destroy this thing even more.
00:41Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:44and people took pride in their work?
00:47My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:51Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:55There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:57but there's no job we can't handle.
01:14Holy .
01:15Oh, hell.
01:16That's Big Mike.
01:17Somebody's in a hurry.
01:18What's up, Rick?
01:20Good to see ya.
01:21How you been, buddy?
01:23Good. How you been?
01:23What's going on?
01:25Got a New York City taxi meter here for ya.
01:27Cool.
01:28I came down to Rick's today because I got this taxi meter
01:31of an old taxi cab.
01:32Just a little piece of automobilia history, you know?
01:35So I thought, we'll bring it down to Rick, see if he can't restore it.
01:37This is cool.
01:38Where'd you find that?
01:39In a junkyard.
01:40And the best part about it was when I got in it.
01:45It's still going.
01:46It's still working?
01:47It's still working.
01:48Eric?
01:49Oh, yeah.
01:50That's very cool.
01:51So the thing's basically like a clock.
01:53Ten cents a minute, it'll go.
01:54It's got some of the writing on the bottom there.
01:56It says it came out of it.
01:57Wow.
01:58What year is it?
01:59It's about 1950s.
02:0050s?
02:01That's very cool.
02:02Yellow Cab Company, New York City.
02:04This taxi meter is really neat.
02:06I mean, it just goes to show how they actually charged fares back in the day
02:11to where nowadays things are all digital and electronic.
02:14It's not the same.
02:15So, you know, the funniest, craziest thing alive is that the first speeding ticket
02:21was ever given to anybody in 1899, and that was the guy in a taxi.
02:27Oh, no way.
02:29I want to know why you're picking it up.
02:31I just thought it was cool.
02:32It's an iconic, you know, piece of automobilia.
02:34Yeah, it's a huge piece of history.
02:36It's from our history.
02:36Yeah, exactly.
02:36I like the big yellow, the original yellow it was.
02:39Maybe that taxi yellow, that iconic yellow color used to be.
02:41Yes, yes.
02:41Absolutely.
02:42Maybe a wood base.
02:44Just give it some heights, give it some look.
02:45Yeah.
02:45Until you walk up, you go, whoa!
02:46Yeah, a little eye candy.
02:48I'm just going to put it in my garage in my man cave.
02:50Right.
02:50So the guys come over, and I'm going to drink a beer and run the meter on them.
02:54What do you think it's going to cost?
02:56Okay.
02:56To pull it apart, blast it all, fill the holes, then go ahead and get it all painted.
03:02Then redo your face with a little brighter gold.
03:05Yeah.
03:06With all that, I'm looking at 1,300.
03:121,300?
03:13Whew!
03:13There's a lot of work in there, Mike.
03:15I mean, I got a lot of custom stuff done up.
03:17We're talking about sort of something you're going to mount on your mantel for everybody to see.
03:20Yeah.
03:20I want to do it nice for you.
03:21And I know you do nice work.
03:23Yeah.
03:24Well, you know what?
03:26The meter's running.
03:27The meter's running, buddy.
03:28Let's do this.
03:30You're on the clock.
03:38Wow.
03:39Look at all the springs in this thing, dude.
03:45All right.
03:49Hey, Ted.
03:49You got a minute?
03:50What you doing?
03:51Sure.
03:52With the boss, anything.
03:53Yeah, yeah.
03:54You know, we've been here at the shop for a while, and we got the inside all dialed in
03:57and stuff, but I'm driving up every day, and I'm looking at this place.
04:00It looks like a big concrete block.
04:02We've been here at the new shop for a while now, and one of the things that I really wanted
04:06to do was come up with a cool design for the front of the building.
04:10I mean, something to make it look like home.
04:11You know, I've always had this dream about restoring a whole boardwalk of a 1940s, you know,
04:17like a street.
04:18Good old-fashioned Main Street USA from the early 40s.
04:21Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:22So I thought, why don't we, I mean, such a big, long building.
04:25I wanted your ideas about what we could do to the front.
04:27You got a bank.
04:28You got a drugstore.
04:29You got a bakery.
04:30Perfect.
04:30Yeah, yeah, something like that.
04:31Yeah, the building's perfect for it.
04:32It's huge, flat, giant, open canvas.
04:34Right.
04:35So we could maybe paint on the building or do something like that?
04:38You could paint it.
04:39Yeah.
04:40It's going to look kind of flat, and if it's not done really, really well, it's going
04:42to look a little hokey.
04:43Yeah.
04:44But we could build something.
04:45We could actually fabricate sections to put on the front of the building, and you could
04:48have some real stone, some real brick textures, glass windows maybe.
04:53Yeah.
04:54This is why I love working with the best of the best.
04:57Ted's the type of artist that can envision this completely finished before it's even drawn
05:01up on paper.
05:02So what do you think?
05:03Big project?
05:04Little project?
05:05Time?
05:06The building's big.
05:07This project potentially could be huge, but this big blank canvas that we got really can
05:12present some really cool opportunities for us to do something really nice.
05:14Okay.
05:15I'll get you some as quick as I can.
05:17We'll take it from there.
05:17Cool.
05:18Cool, cool.
05:18Thanks.
05:18Let me know as soon as you can.
05:21Hmm.
05:29Kyle, look at this damn wheel.
05:31Excuse me, guys.
05:32How you doing?
05:33I want to get an estimate on this machine.
05:35Okay.
05:36You don't want us to estimate it.
05:37We'll get Rick for you.
05:38All right.
05:39I appreciate it.
05:39Thank you, guys.
05:40Kyle and I do a lot around here, but we leave it to Rick to say how much it's going
05:44to cost.
05:45Hey.
05:46How you doing?
05:47Good.
05:47How are you?
05:47Good.
05:48Stan.
05:48Stan, good to meet you.
05:49Nice to meet you, Rick.
05:50Man, this thing is bad.
05:52I came today to Rick's Restoration to bring in my Xeno gum machine to have restored.
05:56What year do you think this is?
05:581893.
05:59That's incredible.
06:00These are in places like bars and barbershops.
06:03Gum in the beginning, it wasn't for your breath.
06:05You know, it's good for your jaw.
06:06Little did they know later on in life they put so much sugar in it, now it's bad for
06:09your teeth.
06:11So you think it works?
06:12Or it doesn't work?
06:13No, it does not work.
06:14This is a pretty sentimental value to me because my uncle restored the back of this.
06:19And it was working, but over the years, it is broken again in the back of the mechanism
06:23itself.
06:24My uncle worked on it.
06:26Unfortunately, he's no longer living.
06:28It means a lot to me.
06:29He's one of my favorite uncles.
06:31Do you know where that went?
06:32Well, this is the weight.
06:33That was the weight.
06:33This was what my uncle put on it.
06:35Oh, he made that.
06:36He made that.
06:37Okay, because I've never seen a piece like this.
06:39This was not an original piece.
06:41There's a lot of work in this piece.
06:42He's a great craftsman.
06:43Yeah.
06:44When you turn this, the spring would tighten up.
06:47And then when you put the penny in, it would make this thing spin.
06:50And then each time this spins, it spins the gear.
06:53See the gear move over there?
06:55Which turns that gear, turns that gear, turns that gear, pulls this arm back, pushes the
06:59gum forward.
07:00It's a lot?
07:00A lot.
07:01Right.
07:02It's pretty intense.
07:02First of all, I'm going to get the mechanism out.
07:05And then we're going to figure out what broke.
07:06But you've got the instructions in case you know how to put them together.
07:09I know.
07:09I just was reading that.
07:10It says, irresponsible persons should not be allowed to touch.
07:15I've got to weigh out who my irresponsible ones are.
07:17I've got to figure out who's going to help me work on this.
07:19All right.
07:20So I want to know, how do you see it being done?
07:22Well, I would like to get it back to its original state.
07:25Okay.
07:25Working state, you're saying?
07:26Working state.
07:27Okay.
07:27Still in the antique form with the patina on it.
07:30So we want to leave the patina.
07:31Yes.
07:32What do you think the price would be for that?
07:35Um, the whole thing doing it the way you would like it done.
07:39I'm looking at $1,500.
07:46Well, being that it's a very, very sentimental piece for me, it's worth it for me to do that.
07:52All right.
07:52Except that price.
07:53Okay.
07:53Awesome.
07:54Pressure is definitely on.
07:55It is pressure on.
07:56I can feel it.
08:05Okay.
08:06Okay.
08:06Grab that side over there.
08:09All right.
08:10Now, Tyler, come forward.
08:11I gave Ted some ideas earlier on how I wanted the shop front to look.
08:15So far, it looks like he has nailed it.
08:18It's just a lot bigger project than I thought it would be.
08:21Tilt it.
08:22Tilt it forward.
08:24Stay there.
08:25Hold on.
08:26Nice and easy now.
08:27I don't want this thing falling.
08:34My dad is determined to rebuild the front of the shop.
08:37So, that means I'm going to have to step it up and Brett Lee's going to have to step
08:40it up as well.
08:41So, you know how busy we've been lately, right?
08:43There's nobody to really watch this Xeno gum machine.
08:46So, I was wondering if you want to take that on.
08:48Yeah?
08:49Yeah.
08:49Yeah.
08:50You good with that?
08:50I can do that.
08:51All right.
08:51I got the process sheet.
08:53It's right here.
08:53Okay.
08:54This will tell you who's going to do what.
08:56Yeah.
08:57This is definitely stepping it up from other tedious jobs.
08:59So, I'm pretty stoked to, you know, show him what I can do.
09:02You good?
09:03Easy enough.
09:04Bam.
09:05We'll see ya.
09:05Alrighty.
09:06I'm a little scared to give Bradley all this responsibility.
09:09But I know he can do it.
09:15Oh, this thing's all kinds of jacked up.
09:18Yeah.
09:18Let's test it out.
09:20Tyler's having me oversee the Xeno gum machine.
09:22While I have Cowboy and Robert finishing up on the wood, I'm giving David's
09:26hand with getting the coin shoot fixed.
09:28I like the quick little fix someone did here with the yardstick.
09:31Just drop straight through there.
09:33Mm-hmm.
09:34Let's take this wood off.
09:35The shoot is held together by a brass plate and a yardstick.
09:39We have to take it apart so Dave can weld the cracks and the breaks.
09:42So, we're cracked here, we're cracked here, we're cracked there, there.
09:45Split in half here.
09:47A lot of welding.
09:49It's in a lot of pieces and I don't think we'll be able to replace it.
09:52So, hopefully Dave can put it back together.
09:54Ready?
09:55Yeah.
09:57Oh, wow.
10:01Yeah, right.
10:03We're gonna have a big problem trying to weld this.
10:05Like, you know, when you weld something, the metal gets hot and it turns into like a liquid.
10:08This, all it's doing is just blowing away.
10:10You can see where I put that filler rod in it, that piece just blew out.
10:14Some of this old metal like this, it's damn near impossible to weld.
10:19And I'm gonna stop right here because if I try to keep going, all we're gonna do is destroy this
10:23thing even more.
10:24Being in charge is pretty tough.
10:26I gotta step it up and figure out a way to fix this.
10:29This sucks.
10:30This does suck.
10:37Hey, Jesse, while my dad keeps working on the front of the shop, I'm spearheading the taxi meter.
10:41Since this is gonna be a display piece, I've headed over to the upholsterer to get a cover made for
10:46the pedestal we created.
10:47Hey, Tyler.
10:48You good?
10:48What's going on?
10:49Alright.
10:49Um, so, we wanna make this look like an old school taxi cab dashboard.
10:53Oh, cool.
10:53Do you have some blacks I can pick from without going through that mess?
10:58I have a mess that you can go through right here.
11:00Oh, yeah, I got a smaller mess.
11:02I pretty much know what I want.
11:04Now, I just hope I can find it.
11:06Picking out upholstery isn't like pin the tail on the donkey.
11:09You really have to know what you want and then feel through all the options.
11:12I'm thinking something like this.
11:14Okay.
11:15Okay.
11:17Got it?
11:19What do you think?
11:19Yeah.
11:20We'll do material on this side and then we'll do the piping here.
11:24Okay.
11:24And then we're gonna do staples under here.
11:26Alright.
11:26I thought it'd be cool to learn another skill in the business and since upholstery is such
11:30a big part of restoring things, I thought it'd be really interesting to learn how to
11:33do it.
11:34So, I'll mark it and you cut it.
11:36Alright.
11:36Alright.
11:39You cut the straight line?
11:40Not really.
11:42Geez.
11:44Don't cut yourself.
11:45Extra large scissors.
11:47These scissors are nice.
11:48I wish I had these in elementary school.
11:56Alright, Dave.
11:58Uh-oh.
11:59Got Calvary.
12:00The mech's not welding.
12:02No, it's starting to melt away and fall apart on me.
12:04Dave and I are still having trouble with the Xeno gum machine.
12:07So, I went ahead and called Rick in to take a look.
12:10Brittle.
12:10Brittle, brittle.
12:11Let's try some epoxy.
12:12Okay.
12:13Some of that, I got some really bad to the bone stuff.
12:16Get them laid out flat.
12:17Get them to dry.
12:18And we'll give that a shot.
12:19Sounds good.
12:20I'm pretty surprised that Brittle's in charge of restoring this machine.
12:24In fact, I specifically remember reading on the instructions, irresponsible people should
12:30not touch.
12:31But, I guess we'll see if you can actually pull this job off or not.
12:36Alright, that one's together.
12:38Just like that?
12:38Yes, sir.
12:40Good to go.
12:41None of my fingers.
12:51So, I'm going to put the needle on the line.
12:53Okay.
12:54I'm still over at the upholsterers working on a new base for the taximeter.
12:57And now, it's my time to start sewing.
13:00You can put your foot on the, on the pedal.
13:02It's very slow.
13:02And just kind of like barely touch it.
13:05Whoa!
13:07See?
13:07That's very fast.
13:10I blink every time it goes.
13:11Whoa!
13:12That's perfect.
13:13Okay.
13:13This is my first time sewing, and I seriously think I'm having too much fun right now.
13:19It's finesse.
13:29Kyle.
13:29What's up?
13:30Let's get this bad boy put together, huh?
13:32So, I've been working on this gun machine pretty much the whole way down the line.
13:36Now, it's time to get this thing back in one piece.
13:41That is so cool.
13:43It's got, like, all the original everything to it, you know?
13:47Now, this is going to go in here.
13:50Look at that.
13:51Yeah, it's nice.
13:58Hey, Rick.
14:00Hey!
14:00Hey!
14:00I'm here to pick up my Xeno machine.
14:02This machine really means a lot to me because it was restored once before by my uncle.
14:08I'm so anxious to see this, and I hope my money is well spent.
14:12I'm hoping you like it.
14:13I'm hoping you love it.
14:14You don't know how much I'm anticipating this.
14:16Hey, Bretley!
14:18Bring me the Xeno!
14:19Is he here already?
14:21Yeah, he's here.
14:21I'm here.
14:22I've been so busy with trying to get the front of the shopery done, I put Tyler in charge
14:26of the restorations for a bit.
14:28And when I found out that he put Bretley in charge of this gun machine, I nearly fell
14:32over.
14:33But I gotta admit, this thing turned out way better than I ever thought possible.
14:38All right, here it is.
14:40You know, you were really involved in this, and I want you to feel that same feeling that
14:44I get every single time that I show a customer the hard work.
14:48What did you do on this project?
14:50The woodwork and the mechanism and putting it back together, I mean, you did the inside
14:54and the outside.
14:56Yep, yep.
14:56And you know, if it doesn't come out like I like it, it's your fault, right?
15:00Ooh.
15:01Well, see, that's what I do with every day, Bretley.
15:02It's okay.
15:03Ready?
15:03I'm ready.
15:04All right, here we go.
15:05One, two, three.
15:09Bam.
15:10Wow.
15:11Isn't that cool?
15:12That is unbelievable.
15:13I was not anticipating this.
15:16What can I say after seeing the machine?
15:18Wow.
15:20Unbelievable.
15:21All right, if you remember, the base was broken off.
15:24So we pulled it apart and glued it all together.
15:26Redid the Zeno.
15:27Redid all these pieces.
15:28Everything on this thing is totally original.
15:30I didn't think you were ever going to be able to do this.
15:33This is probably my favorite part.
15:35You ready to see this?
15:35I'm looking forward to this.
15:36All right, here we go.
15:38Wow.
15:39What do you think?
15:39All right.
15:40That looks great in there.
15:41It looks so clean.
15:42So are you ready to see this thing work?
15:44I want to see the gum come out of this machine so bad.
15:47Here we go.
15:47Let's do it.
15:50Wow.
15:51Oh.
15:52Oh, God.
15:54Beautiful mechanism in there.
15:56That is fantastic.
15:57And a piece of gum.
15:59Yep.
15:59For only a penny.
16:00That's right.
16:01Monkel would be very happy and proud about this.
16:04Bradley, I'm really proud of you.
16:05You did a great job in this.
16:06And I'm really happy that you love it.
16:08I love it.
16:10And thank you very much for bringing it in to us.
16:12Thank you so much.
16:13Yep.
16:13Both of you.
16:13Yep.
16:14Great.
16:14Cool.
16:14Great job.
16:15My uncle would be ecstatic seeing what they had done to it.
16:19I'm really pleased, and I know upstairs he's very pleased, too.
16:45Big Mike.
16:46Hey, Rick.
16:47I was waiting and waiting for you.
16:49I was cleaning up the yard.
16:50I'm looking for my taxi meter.
16:52How'd this thing come out?
16:53Um.
16:53It came out pretty cool.
16:55Is it?
16:55It's got a few of those on there.
16:57It got it all checked up.
16:58It's all checked up.
16:59Looks cool.
16:59Oh, man, I'm juiced up to see this thing.
17:01You're gonna love it.
17:01You're gonna love it.
17:02I hope so.
17:02All right.
17:03This thing is D.O.
17:03A when I dropped it off.
17:05So, I hope Rick worked his magic, got this thing resurrected, because I'm really amped
17:08to see it.
17:09You're really excited to see this thing?
17:10I'm pumped.
17:11Come on.
17:12Come on, man.
17:13Here we go.
17:13One, two, three.
17:16Bang!
17:16Oh!
17:18That thing's bad, Rick!
17:19He pulls up that rusty drum and pow!
17:22I thought I was gonna have to pull up my sunglasses.
17:24That thing was so bright.
17:25Hey, what do you think?
17:26Taxi cab yellow?
17:27Taxi cab yellow.
17:28It's gonna get any better than that.
17:30Glossy, glassy finish.
17:31I mean, it's unbelievable the job they did on that paint.
17:34Oh, this thing's off the hook, Rick.
17:36What'd you have to do?
17:37Okay, so when you brought it in, if you remember, all this was just faded and broke.
17:42So, Ted redid all of that.
17:44This gold in here, that's a brand new plate.
17:46And then we wanted to put it on a dash, okay?
17:49So, Robert cut a piece of wood, and he gave it that shape.
17:51And then Tyler took it over to Jesse, our upholster.
17:54Yeah.
17:54And he made this just like a dash, same sort of naugahyde.
17:56It's the real deal.
17:57Yeah, yeah.
17:57And then this flag, it's about out here.
18:00It was really big.
18:00So, Dave cut this.
18:02He bent it.
18:03He made it shorter.
18:04Can't even tell.
18:04Right.
18:05So, now you can do it.
18:06You can get a set.
18:07I hear it ticking.
18:08Yeah.
18:09That is bad.
18:10Now it's hired.
18:11Okay, so it's running.
18:12What is it?
18:13The fare is 75 cents and 10 cents per minute.
18:16You didn't raise it for inflation?
18:17Okay.
18:18Okay, we left it the same.
18:19And then this one right here.
18:20We got no extras.
18:21If you wanted to add an extra.
18:23Now, what's the extra?
18:24The extra is a fare, meaning you got another guy in the car.
18:27Oh, I got you.
18:27So, you got one extra.
18:28Let's say you had two people and it's cost you 40 cents extra.
18:31All right.
18:31That's each person.
18:33That's slick.
18:33For the price of gas nowadays, I'll just mount this in my car.
18:36Well, my buddies want to go for a ride.
18:38I'm all set, man.
18:40That thing's awesome.
18:41It works like it's supposed to.
18:42You can't ask for anything more.
18:44It's just, I hope Rick stayed on the budget and he didn't keep the meter running too long.
18:47So, on the budget here, did you take the long way around the block or on it or what?
18:54Well, you know, this face was a little more than I thought it would, you know.
18:58But that was definitely worth it to me to get that done.
19:00And the whole budget and everything together, we made budget.
19:06We did?
19:06Yeah, we made budget.
19:07Oh, man.
19:07Okay.
19:09I'm glad to hear that.
19:10Yeah, yeah.
19:10I mean, I never expected it to look like that.
19:12That thing's awesome.
19:13I was really excited that Rick came in on budget on this thing.
19:15I know it was a little project, but just the little details and the way Ted did all the painting,
19:20I mean, you can't put a price on that.
19:22Okay, Mike.
19:23All right.
19:24Thanks, Rick.
19:24Meter's running.
19:25Gotta go.
19:26I think this thing will go perfect in my man cave or my garage.
19:30It's amazing.
19:31See you later.
19:40Tyler, Ron, Bradley, everybody, come here.
19:43Get everyone out here.
19:44I want to show you guys something.
19:46With the recent work on the front of the shop, our new location is becoming exactly what I envisioned for
19:51Rick's Restorations.
19:53Now that the work is done, I want to show it off to my team.
19:56You remember the front of the facade?
19:57Yeah.
19:58We finally got it done.
19:59I want to show it to you.
20:00Come on.
20:01All right, wait, wait, wait.
20:03You guys ready?
20:04Yeah.
20:05All right, come on out.
20:07Oh, yeah.
20:08This way.
20:09What do you think about that?
20:12Wow.
20:14Outstanding.
20:15What a shark.
20:16Is that bad?
20:17Check it out.
20:18I love it.
20:19Looks cool, huh?
20:20Awesome.
20:21Absolutely awesome.
20:21It looked like a big piece of turf, but now it looks really good.
20:26It's a good deal.
20:29Now this is home.
20:31We got the Richfield gas station, like the old shop, and then we added some new.
20:35We got a five and dime.
20:37We got a theater.
20:38We got a barber shop now.
20:40We've got a bank there, a diner, and then down at the end, we got the old restoration shop
20:45like we used to have.
20:46So both sides, we got the old, and in the middle is the new.
20:49You know, guys, this is my dream come true, and I definitely couldn't have done it without
20:53you guys.
20:54How about giving us all raises?
20:55Yeah.
20:55Yeah.
20:56I like that idea.
20:57I'm proud of you guys.
20:59We need to get back to work.
21:00Come on.
21:00Let's go.
21:02I'm really proud.
21:03No, I'm real proud.
21:04Come on, Anna.
