00:04on sale this week little Morris minor absolutely brilliant I could not
00:11recommend a vehicle more than this vehicle it was a bit of a boy racer at
00:16heart yeah as you can tell by his muggy thousand it's had suspension load big
00:22wide wheels on it disc brake conversion 1977 Ford Escort here we go hang on he's
00:29walking over dad collected this one I'll let him do this one it's got a real
00:32interesting history it was quite a well-known car is a quite a well-known
00:35car it messes with your head a bit really because it shouldn't sound like
00:39that it's just like hang on a minute hang on your eyes are telling you it's an
00:43Escort and your ears are telling you it's a TR7 V8 1979 Di Tommaso there we've got
00:49lots of bits here the body kit was so deep so they had to build an extension to
00:54the petrol flap you can see from here it means that body kit was probably two
00:57inches deep at the back the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car auctioneers
01:0555 the joys of an auction most people will go to us out with something in mind but
01:10come away with something different the fun is the chase you just don't know
01:16what's on the end of the phone what you're gonna find when you open them doors
01:19this is a family's love affair with motors that have lived a life testing testing
01:25most people will buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car that dad had
01:29you're selling dreams right here we go
01:42good morning Matthewsons in Thornton Liddell yes the cakes were lovely they're really nice we were trying to decide which
01:49would prefer the jam or the lemon curd
01:51while important decisions are being made in the office Derek's off on a bit of a
01:56pilgrimage we're off to a restorer in Croft to pick up two vehicles very very
02:01sadly gentleman's passed away I'm expecting them to be two nice cars I think
02:06there's an MG and a Morris minor so I'm gonna get the wagon out now and go and get the
02:09train
02:18in Croft the crew at classic car workshop are preparing for Derek's arrival for the last few
02:25years Kel looks amazing Woody it was definitely meant to look pretty when it's not and George we've
02:34saved the classic have undertaken 11 restorations for the bangers and cash restoring classics team
02:40including the iconic Ford Mexico have you ever seen George happier we haven't even had a chance
02:50to get it out he's in there we've never seen George happy oh my god it's me birthday but today
03:00they're having a different kind of celebration remembering their friend Ian Wastle a customer
03:06who loved the workshop so much he just stayed and he was a cracking old bloke cracking old bloke we
03:14miss
03:14him terribly while Ian spent many hours fettling away on his 1959 Morris minor thousand it was his
03:211955 MG magnet that brought him into the garage it was a customer that wanted this car to put in
03:29a
03:29five-speed box in and stuff like that he just said oh have you got anything for me I could
03:34do because
03:34I've retired and I'm bored I tell you what best thing he ever said to me that he would just
03:40sort of
03:41like became one of the one of the family didn't he and he was always here he come down and
03:45tinkered
03:46with his cars and had a laugh with us yeah yeah well he seemed to know a bit about everything
03:51didn't
03:51yeah it didn't matter what car it were you were doing crack and block crack and block as a farewell
03:58the crew are taking his two motors for a final spin before they go under the hammer this is the
04:04one that he played with the most the moggy thousand but they both look just as good inside as they
04:08do
04:08outside they're up cracking cars a pair of them it was a bit of a boy racer at heart yeah
04:15as you can
04:17tell by his moggy thousand it's had suspension load big wide wheels on it disc brake conversion
04:23it's a 1300 marina engine with twin carbs and a big bar engine in they just went to town on
04:29it
04:29he just loved playing with that just kept buying bits and putting them on the say he was an OAP
04:34boy
04:34racer really he was Ian and your interior oh yeah you know he loved putting clocks in this thing
04:40it's got a clock for everything in there honestly he spent a lot of money on it a lot of
04:45money and a lot
04:45of time and whoever buys this is going to get an absolute bargain he's done the same thing as
04:51what they're restoring classics do it exactly yeah spend a fortune and get nothing back for it sleeper
04:58car stealth isn't it it goes like the wind it goes like stink it does it goes really well this
05:04magnet as
05:04well this is just beautiful car as well absolutely gorgeous it's put a Ford five-speed gearbox conversion
05:11it was the Sierra I think it was yeah Sierra gearbox yeah we put the five-speed box in and
05:16said he
05:17wouldn't mind just doing a few little bits to it and I convinced him to bare metal it go to
05:21town on
05:21it and get the body looking absolute sweet and that's all we did to it for him we want to
05:28remember
05:28the good times about Ian because come down here and we had we had you know many a laugh and
05:33a muck about
05:34and a tinker with cars he absolutely loved it he loved it and then we miss him yeah we miss
05:39him
05:39like Matt miss him like Matt he never had a nasty word to say about well he some people he
05:44did but
05:45only the ones only the ones who deserved it we've still got his toolbox and his tools and there's all
05:51sorts of bits and pieces laid around the workshop that belong to him and well they'll probably always
05:55be there and then we can remember oh my look at that what is it it looks like it's doing
06:10100 mile an
06:11hour sat there doesn't it I don't even know how you pronounce it really a Dito Masso longchamp never
06:20heard of one mate what Paul was trying to say was Dito Masso longchamp an Italian supercar from 1979
06:28it's one of only 400 made with a few bits that look familiar it looks like a mark 5 Granada
06:35the
06:36top bit good Lord two hands to lift a bleeding bonnet Rover V8 in there look actually that's Rover V8
06:44well I might be wrong but location of the distributor rocker covers look like Rover it
06:50just looks like a Rover V8 to me and I reckon the base car is a Granada but I'll stand
06:57to be corrected
06:58because that pillar looks very much like Cortina Granada
07:07Alejandro de Tommaso wasn't your typical car maker a Formula One racing driver and businessman from
07:13Argentina with big ideas and very little restraint his first big hit was the man Augusta styled by
07:21Jajario and built as one of the most exciting high-performance sports cars to arrive on the
07:26scene for years after that the Pantera a wedge-shaped missile with a Ford V8 that sold well in the
07:34US
07:35and was a motoring superstar Paul was wrong about the Rover engine but right about some Granada bits
07:43that V8 engine was the same as in Starsky's Ford Torino the tail lights were by Alpha and yet it
07:50all
07:50looked a bit lancier sounding like thunder in an Armani suit with Versace wing mirrors it's a bit mixed up
07:58and how you say accessible
08:04it's weird isn't it
08:07yeah that's a strange car isn't it that
08:10hey Mickey what's the base car under here
08:14it sounded lovely
08:15had it running
08:16give her a pump
08:25let's be fair
08:27restored up revamped
08:28recommissioned all the rest of it
08:29if you park that next to that Aston Martin
08:31I know which one everyone would look at
08:33it wouldn't be that Aston Martin
08:34they'd all go at that
08:36everybody
08:37because it's just
08:38it's got stance
08:39it's
08:41yeah
08:41will its stance and oddball a low bring in the big bucks
08:46hang on
08:47just because it's a rare car doesn't mean it's a really valuable car
08:51sometimes yes
08:53sometimes no
08:54I had in me head 12 to 15 grand
08:56that's what I had in me head

10:28just fun to be though
10:29he was a nice bloke
10:30helped us with all sorts
10:32good
10:32he was
10:33yeah
10:35he knew everything about everything
10:36yeah
10:36didn't cost a lot
10:37and just run about
10:38and yeah
10:39yeah brilliant
10:40he loved adding clocks to it
10:42for some reason
10:43yeah well I know where he's coming from
10:44because I'm a similar age
10:45aren't I
10:46and when we had cars like that
10:48and they had no clocks in
10:49the clocks there
10:50like
10:50connected them all up
10:52and that
10:52stupid things we've done
10:55his moggy thousand
10:56has many non-factory upgrades
10:59it was in a bit of a sorry state
11:01some of the wings were
11:01gaffer taped on
11:02so we put new wings on it
11:04we got the engine sorted
11:05we did all the welding on it
11:06yeah no it's nice that
11:07bonny little thing isn't it
11:08yeah
11:08yeah well he was a handy fellow

11:36shock absorber conversion
11:38well he thinks a lot
11:38everything
11:39that should drive like a brand new car
11:40it does it was absolutely brilliant
11:42I bet it does yeah
11:43you'd be lucky if he's driven it 30 40 miles
11:46four to five grand by one of the best moggies in the country
11:49but that's a little bit different because
11:52it ain't only quite really a Morris minor is it
11:55it's like a sort of an MGB in drag isn't it really
11:57the overall condition and presentation
11:59and all the mods and add-ons
12:01I think it's going to take it up to six or seven grand
12:04yeah I mean I don't think it's a dear car up six or seven grand
12:07but funny market
12:08you know
12:10I think it's great
12:11I think it's lovely
12:12MG
12:12difficult one on the value

12:30yeah yeah
12:31but drives it
12:32because he loved them
12:33a lot of lovely signs again as usual

14:01all this you know
14:02you couldn't send a signal
14:03it had to be pigeon
14:04had to take it
14:05amazing isn't it
14:07and we've come all the way

14:15yeah
14:16which
14:16from our point of view
14:18you're like
14:19but
14:20there's two guys there
14:21thrashing it out
14:22isn't there
14:23you know
14:23simple as that
14:24third and last time
14:25when the hammer's down
14:26it is gone
14:27I can't stress that enough
14:2818,7
14:30sold
14:3118,700 pounds
14:32there you go
14:3318,7
14:34all the way
14:35in 100 pound increments
14:37wow
14:38yeah
14:40yeah
14:41yeah
14:55the auction dust
14:56has settled
14:57and Charlie's already
14:58sizing up the newcomers
14:59we've got
15:01I'm going to push the boat out
15:03I'm going to say
15:03probably the nicest
15:05MG magnet we've had through
15:06every now and then
15:07you get
15:08a type of car
15:09that's owned by
15:10a type of person
15:11that
15:12just
15:13has pride in it
15:14I think is the right word
15:15doors shut
15:18unbelievably
15:18they're lovely
15:19generally
15:20they're actually
15:21quite a
15:21good driving car
15:23grandad's had a few
15:24over the years
15:24he's always said
15:25how nice they drive
15:26they're a bit like an MGA
15:27apparently
15:28there's a servo
15:29I just spotted that
15:30that's another mod
15:31everything is neat
15:32everything is tidy
15:33everything has a place
15:34every nut
15:35bolt
15:35cranny
15:36is just nice
15:37you can just feel
15:38that it's had a nice paint job
15:41absolutely lovely
15:42the insides
15:43just unreal
15:44the seats look original
15:45and headlining looks
15:47fairly original as well
15:48so
15:48to keep a few little bits
15:50that are still
15:50relatively
15:51from the car's
15:52sort of period and era
15:53I just think it just
15:54finishes it off
15:55and just makes it
15:56that bit better
15:57me personally
15:59but there is one
16:00period feature
16:01that Charlie doesn't rate
16:04the map's a bit old
16:05though
16:052010
16:06I think we might be
16:07missing some rows
16:07out of that one
16:09yeah
16:09missing rows out of 2024
16:11ones
16:11never mind 2010 ones
16:12I don't know
16:13I just don't think
16:14they're the most pretty car
16:15in the world
16:15the actual shape
16:17I think they could have
16:18thought of a slightly
16:19prettier one
16:26down the road
16:27in Thornton-le-dale
16:28someone's off on a jolly
16:29and they've got a lot
16:30of reasons to be happy
16:32about it
16:33nice day
16:35local
16:36escort
16:37rally car
16:39Yorkshire
16:39bit of Providence
16:41and I'm fed up with emails
16:42so
16:44there's seven reasons
16:45why I'm going to
16:48get out of the office
16:49for a couple of hours
16:50winner winner
16:57for the past
16:5813 years
16:59I've been the custodian
17:01of Dan Gruer's
17:02V8
17:03escort rally car
17:04and I just feel
17:05it's going to be time
17:06to let somebody else
17:07enjoy it
17:08brilliant fun
17:08I did a Lombard rally
17:10at Duncan Park
17:11it's not really moved
17:12for two and a half years
17:13nothing wrong with it
17:14brilliant
17:14uses a lot of petrol
17:16in fact all my pension
17:17goes on petrol
17:20near York
17:21Ian Bell is saying
17:22farewell to a Mark 2
17:23Escort
17:24with a V8
17:25squeezed in it
17:26that once belonged
17:27to racing legend
17:28Dan Gruer
17:31the story of how Ian
17:32came to own the car
17:33stretches back beyond
17:34the mudguards of time
17:37how far do you want me
17:38to go back
17:39to beginning
17:40yeah go on then
17:41go on then
17:41right
17:42okay then
17:43everyone buckled up
17:44I think it was about 1971
17:46me dad's sister
17:48me
17:49do you want to go watch your rally
17:51it was minis predominantly
17:52a few escorts
17:53Cartinas
17:54Anglias
17:55that sort of thing
17:55and all of a sudden
17:58there's this car coming
17:59and where the rest of them
18:00were braking
18:01this car just
18:02like
18:03he put it sideways
18:04and I'm thinking
18:05oh this is
18:06looks like an accident
18:07but it wasn't
18:08and it was
18:09Dan Gruer
18:10and his Volvo
18:10I've no idea
18:11how he got around this corner
18:12but he did
18:13and after that
18:14I was really hooked
18:15and then when I got my own car
18:16I bought this Datsun 1200
18:18and I thought
18:18oh yeah
18:19job sorted
18:20I'm going to crack this
18:20no problem
18:22so I did my heart test
18:23pull back in
18:24and then
18:25there was Dan Gruer
18:26behind me in that Escort
18:27and he's like
18:28three wheeling it
18:28around cones
18:29he's going on three wheels
18:30I'm thinking
18:31well I haven't won this
18:32have I made a long way
18:33you know
18:34not a chance
18:35by way of explanation
18:37we feel you need
18:38to know
18:38that the late Dan Gruer
18:39was a Yorkshire rallying legend
18:41he was also known as
18:43Mad Dan
18:44and Desperate Dan
18:46a brilliant driver
18:47particularly famed
18:49for taking his Volvo 122
18:51to insane speeds
18:52whilst tulling a caravan
18:54Mad Dan's real name
18:56was actually Colin
18:57I worked at a garage in York
18:59and Colin Gruer's brother Ian
19:01he used to come
19:03then he was telling me
19:04that Colin was ill
19:05since leaving York
19:06Colin had gone to France
19:07and then he'd gone to
19:09a little village
19:09near Galway in Ireland
19:11and sadly he passed away
19:12by way of further explanation
19:15just a couple more things
19:18the engine of choice
19:19for these cars
19:20was a Ford Cosworth BDA
19:22B for belt
19:23D for drive
19:24A for something else
19:27I'm only going for what people said
19:29they seem to think
19:31the BDA was a little bit
19:32temperamental
19:33I know that the Rover V8
19:36going by the readouts
19:37we've had
19:37it's sort of putting out
19:39the same power
19:40as a BDA
19:41BDAs are maybe more now
19:43the ridiculous power
19:44they get from them
19:46now there's just one more thing
19:48before we leave
19:48this invaluable lesson
19:50as any rallying enthusiast
19:52will tell you
19:52almost every day
19:54if given the chance
19:55the sensible engine
19:56to put in this car
19:57is the Pinto
19:58strong
19:59reliable
20:00tunable
20:01and made by Ford
20:03not Rover
20:05people say
20:06oh
20:07drop a Pinto in it
20:08or drop this engine in it
20:09no no I aren't
20:11dropping engine in
20:12else it wouldn't be
20:13Dan Gruber's V8 Escort
20:14if it had a
20:14four cylinder Pinto in it
20:16I've done as little as possible
20:17put two new seats in it
20:19put some new seat melts in it
20:20new brakes
20:21it's a good throwback in time
20:22it's a blast from past
20:24if it sells
20:25I would love it to stay around York
20:26I think I've done my bit
20:28I've got it across from Ireland
20:30it's sort of something else's going on
20:46in Pickering
20:47a browser has discovered
20:49a blast from the past
20:51I used to use
20:52some of these
20:53but they were old
20:54for me
20:54when I started using them
20:57quite some time ago
20:58Derek returned
20:59with a Krypton tuner
21:01what's a Krypton tuner?
21:03something to tune sound
21:05you took one off
21:06at back of your lorry
21:07with your granddad
21:07oh that fit
21:08yeah yeah yeah
21:09I remember it yeah
21:09what's that?
21:12a load of rubbish
21:13why'd they fit you to?
21:15because it's granddad
21:16at long last
21:17this mysterious device
21:19has found an admirer
21:20in former engine
21:22diagnostic technician
21:23Roy Clark
21:25they were old
21:26when I started playing
21:27with them as a boy
21:28but I know a lot about them
21:30and I'm willing to share it
21:33it's school time
21:34this is like
21:35intensive care
21:37for cars
21:37well a bit like us
21:39when we go into intensive care
21:40nobody knows what's going on
21:42they just know
21:43we're not working right
21:44we've all given samples
21:45at the doctors before
21:46and we've sent it off
21:47well this will analyse them
21:49this is a top of the range
21:51for its age
21:51because we've got
21:52the introduction of oscilloscopes
21:54you can change that picture
21:55to look at other things as well
21:57like your exhaust gas
21:58yeah
21:58so your emissions
22:00it wasn't something
22:01that your average mechanic
22:02had owned
22:02certainly not
22:03Derek brought this back
22:05he did a good thing
22:06it's not a piece of junk
22:07if you can understand
22:09what this does
22:10you know enough
22:11about your car
22:12that's a living
22:13classic cars
22:14aren't going to go tomorrow
22:15so if this comes up
22:17in the auction
22:17if you've got a man cave
22:18get one
22:27around the corner
22:29Ian's Moggy Thousand
22:30inspiring Paul's
22:32top tip for newbies
22:34everyone who's coming into
22:36the classic movement
22:38in my opinion
22:39should start off
22:41with that
22:42or an MGB
22:45me
22:46that
22:48that there
22:48I think
22:49is absolutely
22:51brilliant
22:52super usable
22:53and just quirky
22:55aren't they
22:55it's a little peach
22:56isn't it
22:56little darling
22:57and I think
22:58it's set off
22:58by the colour
22:59and the banded wheels
23:00in my eyes
23:02get your clubs
23:03in there
23:03look
23:05I think they're
23:06a great little lump
23:07brilliant little car
23:08innit
23:08that should
23:09appeal
23:10to the slightly
23:11younger audience
23:12he's had a facelift
23:13a once over
23:14he's got some nice
23:15upgrades
23:18things like
23:19servo
23:20for the brake
23:20you know
23:21you don't have to
23:21really forcefully
23:22press the brake pedal
23:23nice light brakes
23:25they have light steering
23:26anyway
23:26slightly wider wheels
23:28just gives it
23:29a little bit more
23:30of a stance
23:31and I think
23:32it yeah
23:32it just looks right
23:34it just got it right
23:35so the upgrade side
23:36of that car
23:37won't really
23:38make it worth
23:39any more
23:39unfortunately
23:40so whatever
23:41you spend on it
23:42you spend on it
23:43it's what he wanted
23:44to do innit
23:45and the next guy
23:45will have a load
23:46of fun in it
23:47brilliant
23:48I'm going to suggest
23:49he's going to be like
23:50six or seven grand
23:51but I bet he wants more
23:52I bet he wants more
23:55absolutely brilliant
23:55you'll have more fun
23:56in that car
23:57than you will in that E-Type
23:58you will honestly
24:00you will
24:00you'd use it more
24:01because you'd pop to the shop
24:02in it
24:03and you'd pop here in it
24:04because they're just a smiley car
24:06the Jags are lovely
24:08but you aren't going to go shopping
24:09in it are you
24:10you're not
24:10you know
24:11I'd be alright running a Jag car
24:12I don't go shopping
24:13but most people
24:14have to go shopping a bit
24:16don't they
24:18so
24:18Maurice Salson
24:19who does your shopping
24:20I'm very fortunate
24:22I am yeah
24:22Ange does most of ours
24:24yeah
24:25I can't honestly
24:26hand on art
24:27remember
24:27the last time I went
24:30shopping
24:30yeah
24:31I had to go for a pint of milk
24:32the other day
24:33it'd be terrible
24:34I'll tell you what
24:35I had to ask him where it was
24:37yeah
24:38it was in some cold thing
24:39at the back
24:39yeah yeah
24:40so
24:41nah
24:42avoid shops
24:52little Maurice Miner
24:54oh

27:29why
27:31supposedly
27:31it was more reliable
27:32than the VDA
27:33yeah probably
27:34it is
27:35it came back
27:36from Ireland
27:36I heard it was there
27:37I just remember it
27:39from years ago
27:40it just seemed a shame
27:41to leave it there
27:42so
27:43took my missus
27:44for a nice weekend
27:44to Ireland
27:47while we're here
27:47yeah
27:48while we're here
27:49we're just
27:49going to go look at this escort
27:52but yes evidently this was built
27:54from an RS-1800 shell
27:56couldn't get a bigger radiator
27:57in there if you tried
27:58could you
27:58Range Rover
27:59is that what it is
28:00yeah
28:00yeah it's bloody massive
28:01isn't it
28:02have you used it in anger
28:03I did one of those
28:04Lombard Rally festivals
28:05at Duncan Park
28:06oh yeah yeah yeah yeah
28:07it was brilliant fun
28:08really it was good fun
28:10with it having lots of history
28:11I just feel I've been more
28:13the custodian of it
28:14than the owner of it
28:15yeah it's really bespoke
28:17isn't it
28:18yes
28:19no power steering at all
28:20not so bad when you get going
28:22but no
28:23stood still
28:24you don't want to be doing
28:25a three-point turn
28:26and you're wondering
28:27what that is behind seat
28:28I'm just
28:28before I ask a question
28:30I was just trying to work it out
28:31it's the heater
28:32hence the water pipe
28:34is going into it
28:34yeah what a machine
28:36that one
28:36that's your map light
28:37oh is it
28:38yeah
28:39obviously
28:39yeah
28:40remind me before you go
28:41to put some more petrol
28:43in it for you
28:43because I put a tenner in
28:45yesterday
28:45and it loves petrol
28:47how long will a tenner
28:48last you Ian
28:49five or six miles
28:51it's an animal isn't it
28:53it's an absolute animal really
28:54yeah
28:54just looking round it
28:56it's just like a bit
28:57of a time warp thing
28:58isn't it
28:58yeah
28:58it's a play thing
28:59really
29:00oh yeah
29:01we've just got to find
29:02someone who just wants
29:03to have a bit of fun really
29:04yeah that's all it is
29:06and a blast about
29:06well go on
29:07while you are there
29:07just fire it up
29:08so we can hear it out here
29:09yeah
29:09because it's um
29:10oh
29:11yeah this is something
29:12you don't hear every day
29:13a V8 in an Escort
29:18it messes with your head
29:19a bit really
29:20because it shouldn't
29:20sound like that
29:21it's just like
29:22hang on a minute
29:22hang on
29:23your eyes are telling you
29:24it's an Escort
29:25and your ears are telling you
29:25it's a TR7 V8
29:27yeah
29:29we've just got to find
29:30someone else who's as barmy
29:31as me and Ian
29:32that's the trouble
29:35and the clutch
29:36I'll let you put it on
29:37what is it
29:38on or off or heavy
29:39on or both
29:40both
29:40both
29:41both
29:42absolutely both
29:51it's mental
29:52but I could eat
29:53one of them false
29:53chest weeks
29:55yeah
29:55and some sideburns
29:57yeah it's like
29:58it's like life on Mars
29:59isn't it
30:12we're there we're there
30:13we're there
30:14it's not
30:14it's not viable
30:16competitively
30:16nah
30:17ship sailed on that
30:19yeah
30:20so we've just got to find
30:21someone who wants to have a bit of a play
30:22it's going to be novelty factor really
30:25shouting somewhere like
30:27in the teens
30:2813 and 14 and 15
30:29ish to me
30:32when we're going to try and peg it money wise
30:33I genuinely can't remember
30:34fuck it
30:36I'll get on
30:37I'll speak to you on the phone
30:38alright mate
30:38good to see you
30:39take care mate
31:03in bickering
31:05things are on the move
31:07and Paul's pushed over the edge
31:21thankfully rally car legend Charlie
31:23has a better grasp
31:25when it comes to
31:25rally car legend
31:27Dan Gruer's
31:28escort
31:28this is
31:29a mark 2
31:31escort
31:32rally car
31:33now
31:33I do know
31:34that it's a little bit different
31:36to a standard one
31:38because she's got
31:39eight cylinders
31:40quite a famous car as well
31:41he's clearly seen some action
31:43look at all the plates
31:44on top of plates
31:44so it's not the best shelf
31:46but
31:46if I ended up driving it
31:48I'd end up crashing it anyway
31:49so what's the difference
31:51it looks heavy doesn't it
31:52with the bigger wheels
31:53and bigger tyres
31:54and quite the squat
31:55and the mud flaps
31:56are nearly on the floor
31:57it just looks heavy doesn't it
31:58bit of go alright though
31:59I hadn't actually heard it
32:01you know
32:01I haven't heard it
32:02I want to hear it
32:03but
32:03if I ended up starting it
32:05I'd end up doing donuts
32:05in the shed
32:06so I can't do that
32:07but it'd sound mean
32:08though wouldn't it
32:08going through the woods sideways
32:10and lots of rev and wheel spin
32:12and all that
32:14generally in these escorts
32:15you run an atlas rear axle
32:16so you can run more power through it
32:18because obviously the standard one
32:19isn't going to take it
32:20the standard diff would just
32:21you put a jag axle in
32:22and a jag gearbox
32:23instead of a five speed ZF
32:25just to be different
32:26it clearly worked though
32:27didn't it
32:28that's what it wants
32:29isn't it
32:29somebody to use it
32:31if I had more time
32:32and more money
32:33then I'd use it
32:34but I don't say
32:34that's the end of that
32:35isn't it
32:39provisional bid on it
32:40I know you wanted 300 pounds
32:41we got it up to 250
32:43it's all systems go
32:45in the auction engine room
32:47I like that bike
32:49it's a lovely thing isn't it
32:51yeah five cylinder
32:51well they were
32:52a three cylinder
32:53yeah
32:53and yeah
32:54he's fabricated it
32:55into a five cylinder
32:56and it's so smooth
32:57it runs a lot
32:58I haven't ridden it of course
32:59but just had it running
33:00down in the shed
33:01down there
33:01it runs all lovely
33:02it sounds a lot of money
33:03you can't buy another one though
33:05it's one of one
33:06yeah

34:25got a good bike
34:26he's got a good bike
34:27but he's happy
34:28sold to a Kawasaki enthusiast
34:30who plans to ride it
34:32not just sit and look at it
34:361977 Ford Escort
34:39here we go
34:39hang on
34:40he's walking over
34:40dad collected this one
34:41I'll let him do this one
34:43it's got a real interesting history
34:44it was quite a well known car
34:45it is a quite a well known car
34:46the guys that used to campaign the car
34:49were I think probably a little eccentric
34:52but I love eccentricity
34:54and I embrace it
34:55and I love that we're in a position to mix
34:57with people that are just as barmy as me and you really
35:00so yeah it's a little bit unusual
35:02it's obviously got a V8
35:04Jag Axle
35:05Jag Back End
35:06you name it
35:06it's a play car
35:08but if you do sort of bit of homework on the history
35:10they were quite eccentric
35:11would turn up at events
35:12in shirt and ties
35:13really?
35:14yeah yeah
35:14and all the rest of it
35:15yeah yeah
35:15just real quirky and different
35:16so anyway there you go
35:18but there we're going to be
35:19we've got £12,000 there
35:20thank you at £12,000 bid
35:22I see it
35:22at £12,250
35:24at £12,255
35:27£12,250
35:31it's a silly story
35:33I really got into collecting cars
35:34because primary school
35:35we used to get a bus to go swimming
35:37and we used to go past a high-end car dealer
35:39we used to do Jensen's
35:41and I just loved the sound of them
35:42as we went past on the bus
35:43as a sort of 5 or 6 year old kid
35:45I said
35:45one day I'm going to have one of those
35:47so my first collectible car
35:48was the Jensen Interceptor convertible
35:50and I still own that car today
35:51I still use it today
35:53in Oxfordshire
35:54Steve Grove's collection
35:55extends from the esteemed
35:57to the exotic
35:59I own a Di Tommaso Pantera
36:01which is a two-seater sports car
36:031973
36:04very unusually
36:05this one is right-hand drive
36:06I think if you asked my teenage daughter
36:08she would tell you
36:09it's fast and loud
36:10and now
36:11he's bought his sporty Di Tommaso
36:13a stable mate
36:15bidding on it was quite fierce
36:16I think it went for about
36:17three times the estimate
36:18however three times the estimate
36:20is probably about right for it
36:21I'd done my work
36:22and worked out
36:22how much it was going to cost me
36:24to get that longchamp
36:25back to where it needed to be
36:26and I had in mind
36:27a value that I would go to
36:29and actually we were below it
36:30at the end
36:32Steve's no stranger to restoration
36:34a couple of years ago
36:35his Pantera
36:36was also a fixer-upper
36:38the plan for the car from here
36:40is to actually take it back
36:41to factory spec
36:42in terms of colour
36:42is to go back to the factory colour
36:44which was a metallic silver
36:45the thing that attracted me
36:46to the car
36:46is the opportunity
36:47to save a pretty rare car
36:49in a way that was actually
36:50financially viable
36:52one of the interesting things
36:53we found as we've gone along
36:54is in relation to the body kit
36:55what became very clear
36:56is it was made
36:57at home in a garage
36:58it was substantially expanding
36:59foam filler
37:00and wood
37:03glued onto the car
37:04I think it was a show car
37:05more than anything else
37:06I think they took it to modified car shows
37:07and hot rod shows
37:10so the big job
37:12has been to un-pimp this ride
37:14you can see the body kit's off
37:16you can see what's underneath
37:16the shape's there now
37:17and the body kit was so deep
37:19so they had to build an extension
37:21to the petrol flat
37:22you can see from here
37:23it means that body kit
37:24was probably two inches deep
37:25at the back
37:26spoiler alert
37:28I mean literally
37:29this was just glued on
37:31the original wheel arches
37:32are actually still here
37:33they've been bent up
37:34and they've been cut
37:35to allow the foam
37:36to be stuck into it
37:37still the odd residual bit there
37:39these were original
37:40Di Tommaso Campagnolo wheels
37:41which we found on eBay
37:43a lot of filler in here
37:44not yet sure what's underneath that
37:46and again you can see
37:48what they've done
37:48is they've bent up
37:49the original wheel arches
37:50and used that as a base
37:51for the body kit
37:53we've got four new wings
37:54a new bonnet
37:55and new wheel arches
37:56it took a while
37:57to trace them down
37:58so there's a very active
37:59owners group
38:00and then over a period of months
38:01a little Aladdin's cave
38:03appeared of things
38:04that are stuck
38:04in people's garages
38:05the headlights aren't right
38:06and aren't original
38:07these would have been
38:08large single lights
38:09actually in common
38:10with the Ford Granada
38:11from that era
38:12and then you can see
38:13what they've done here
38:14to the bonnet
38:14which is they've cut this
38:16to form a vent shape
38:17and then to actually
38:17keep it elevated and raised
38:19what we found
38:19when we took the body kit off
38:20was actually they just
38:21propped an old screwdriver
38:22under it and glued it in
38:23I expect that bonnet's unsaveable
38:25but we found a new one there
38:27mechanically
38:27there was actually
38:27a fairly limited number
38:28of modifications
38:29done to this car
38:30the engine is essentially
38:31a Ford V8
38:32so it's pretty easy
38:33to get parts for
38:34to be fair though
38:35actually the interior
38:36is not bad
38:37original headlining
38:38which is quite rare
38:38it has a stamped pattern on it
38:40so whilst it looks pretty rough
38:41actually there's nothing
38:42in here that scares me
38:44Steve's only fear
38:45when I did the assessment
38:46of this car
38:46before buying it at auction
38:47the bit that worried me
38:49was the rust
38:50that runs under the back
38:51from sort of around
38:51that wheel arch
38:52and across the car
38:53and in places it's structural
38:54so we'll have to do
38:55some work on those
38:56and it will end up
38:57quality wise
38:58very similar to the Pantera
38:59that sat next to it
39:00and then frankly
39:01they'll hopefully
39:01live a happy life together
39:02next to each other
39:03in my garage
39:04and which one gets used
39:05will depend whether
39:05I'm feeling angry
39:06and aggressive
39:06or calm and relaxed
39:09it's the last time
39:09this is ever going to
39:10sit on this car
39:11I'm going to go and
39:11stick it on the office wall
39:12and it's going to stay there
39:13I've got a gift for you
39:18it's better up there than on the car
39:20it's never going on the car again
39:27there's just something about
39:29their little cheeky appeal
39:30I just think
39:30they're just such a
39:31interesting car
39:33shape wise
39:33looks wise
39:34everybody loves it
39:35and so do I
39:36in the heart of the Cotswolds countryside
39:39where every view looks like a postcard
39:42sits a British icon
39:44right at home
39:46Steve Thomas
39:47and his almost 10 year old son Toby
39:50are the proud new custodians
39:52of Ian's 1959
39:54Morris Minor
39:57it's the only classic car
39:58I've owned that's older than me
39:59so yeah
40:03didn't mean to do that
40:04I iconically coined in
40:06the madness song
40:07the Morris Minor
40:08where I owned one
40:09it was made in 59
40:10which my son keeps singing
40:12annoyingly
40:14I'm driving in my car
40:16I'm but I'm but I'm but
40:18I guess you'll find
40:19your jackie
40:22I've bought a temperament
40:26from a blow
40:27from Resil
40:28it's a nice sound
40:30isn't it
40:30it was really
40:32oh
40:3259
40:35in a factory by the time
40:39this is Morris on the door
40:41the GP I learned it before
40:43I drive in and for my job
40:45let's gather
40:46those me I stop
40:48you're a madness fan
40:49now
40:51Toby what do the old
40:53cars appeal to you then do I like old cars yeah oh yeah I love a lot more
40:59joyful than newer ones there's like a lot of possibilities you can do with
41:03them like new cars like there's not that many possibilities when I old cars you
41:09can do like a bunch like off-roaders like speed racers like dune buggies like
41:17anything I presume we're not going to turn this into a dune book no we know
41:21right it's just a little show car a little show car and he's that what you
41:25like doing with it with dad and the family yeah we like going like to a few
41:29car shows don't we we go to quite a few car shows yeah yeah and it always brings a
41:33smile to people's faces yeah
41:37I'm a self-taught mechanic I own a couple of other classic cars and going back 20
41:4130 years ago I was building beach buggies out of VW Beatles I was chopping those up
41:46so my first car was a long wheelbase beach buggy I then went to a short wheel base
41:51beach buggy then I started trying to build a Delorean replica he's grown up
41:56knowing nothing more than classic cars when I'm at home and I'm doing stuff
42:00tinkering in the garage it's on a classic car and he can point to things he knows
42:04what things are he knows what things do he's absolutely adamant that his first
42:08car is going to be a classic will it be this classic I don't think it will be this
42:13classic for some bizarre reason I think there's something lacking in the
42:17education of classic cars because he actually wants a reliant Robin but I've
42:21still got a bit of time to educate him so you know it's fine this car belong to
42:26an old gentleman who sadly passed away all these friends who miss him what would
42:31you say about his car where it's gone to has it gone to a place where it's going to
42:35be looked after yeah it's going to be gone to a place where it's going to be
42:39looked after like done some really nice stuff to it and yes gonna be really nice all the
42:46classic cars he wants to be of an age where he can drive them all so just
42:50gonna have to keep hold of it yeah why would we sell it why would we sell it yeah
42:54why yeah we'll keep hold of it for you don't worry so it's a keeper it's a keeper
43:04yeah
43:08it's no closer Jackie
43:12I'll call to Tim from Rizzo
43:15I'll call to Tim from Rizzo
43:18I'll call to Tim from Rizzo
43:18I'll call to Tim from Rizzo
43:20It was clean
43:21And we're in the rain
43:22Yeah
43:22It was clean
