00:00Up next on American Restoration.
00:02Ron and I are on Historic Route 66.
00:05I'll show you something that I think I want you to restore.
00:08Oh, yeah.
00:09The Willitzer jukebox is like a scene straight out of Happy Days.
00:12What's up, Tyler? Not your favorite?
00:13You're awkward.
00:14Eric and Tyler don't exactly get along.
00:163,500.
00:1728.
00:1829.
00:1928.
00:1928.
00:2028.
00:23My cat, the boy, hasn't been feeling well,
00:25so we're taking him to the vet.
00:27Hear out your damn mind.
00:28The boy ain't riding in the back, you heartless .
00:33Remember back in the day when things were made by hand
00:36and people took pride in their work?
00:39My name's Rick Dale, and I bring these things back to life.
00:43Every restoration has its own set of challenges.
00:47There's no owner's manual for what we do,
00:50but there's no job we can't handle.
01:01Ron and I are out on the road doing some picking on historic Route 66.
01:05There's a couple of spots here that has some very, very cool stuff.
01:08Places along 66 are stocked full of collectibles and stuff we can fix up and sell for a pretty penny.
01:15We already got some really great stuff.
01:17But before we head home, Ron got a lead from a local shop owner that might want to get some
01:21stuff restored.
01:22So we're going to go check it out.
01:25Hey, how are you? I'm Rick.
01:26You're Rick.
01:27This is my brother Ron.
01:28Ron, how are you?
01:29How long have you been here?
01:30I was born on old Route 66, one block south, 84 years ago.
01:34Wow.
01:35Rick and Ron have come to look at some of my old junk.
01:39So let's go inside and look at a few things I got in there.
01:42Okay. Right on.
01:43You're walking into a little bit of America of yesterday.
01:47Oh, man. Check this stuff out.
01:50Holy crap, dude. Wow.
01:53It's not just a store. It's loaded with things from all over the world.
01:57Awesome.
01:58I'll show you something that I think I want you to restore.
02:02Okay.
02:02If we come to terms.
02:04And not gross.
02:05But follow me.
02:06Okay.
02:07Oh, yeah.
02:08That's pretty nice.
02:09What's the story with this one?
02:10We bought it about 1960.
02:13The Wurlitzer jukebox is the ultimate pop culture icon of the 50s.
02:18They were in every local burger joint so that teens could bop their head to Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry.
02:24It's like a scene straight out of Happy Days.
02:28What do you think it would cost to restore this machine?
02:31Okay.
02:31I'll start with making the mechanism work.
02:34Going through the amplifier.
02:35Making all the tubes make sure they're correct.
02:38Clean it all up.
02:39Make it pretty.
02:40Now, on the exterior of it, it's all beautified.
02:42We got, you know, all the front all gets redone.
02:45All the wood gets redone.
02:46The sides.
02:47The nameplate across the front.
02:49Everything gets restored to where it's basically a brand new.
02:52Brand new.
02:53Brand new one.
02:53And in order to do that, this is going to be $4,500 to restore totally.
03:01So then, now you have a working, beautiful, new.
03:06$4,500?
03:07Yes, sir.
03:08For full restoration.
03:09That's $4,500 pesos.
03:11No.
03:11Oh.
03:12Oh, you won them in dollars.
03:13Yeah.
03:14Not francs.
03:15Not francs.
03:17Okay, Jose.
03:18All right.
03:18Well, luckily, it didn't come to blows with Angel.
03:21But this jukebox is going to be a handful.
03:23So we're going to load it up and head back to the shop so we can get started on this
03:27restoration.
03:37Hey, cowboy.
03:40You almost done with that?
03:41Yeah.
03:42A few more minutes.
03:43What's this?
03:44That's my cat.
03:45I got to take him to the vet.
03:48And I need Kyle to take me.
03:50Man, you're just, you're killing me.
03:52I mean, we got so much going on right now, I can't afford you guys off.
03:55I got to take care of him.
03:56He's my family.
03:56He's the only family you've got, isn't he?
03:58That's it.
03:59That's my boy.
04:00All right, buddy.
04:01Don't be gone long.
04:02Get it done.
04:02And get back here as soon as possible.
04:04Quick.
04:04Okay?
04:05Thanks, Rick.
04:06Can't have cats at the shop.
04:07No.
04:09Next time, I'll bring a dog.
04:19I got a call from Eric, who's one of the local pickers that we do a lot of business with.
04:23He's kind of a pain in the butt, but we've got a lot of cool items from him in the
04:27past.
04:28So Tyler and I are going to swing by his place and see what he's got for us.
04:32Why are we here?
04:33Hey, it's my favorite person.
04:34And one not-so-favorite.
04:37Eric and Tyler don't exactly get along.
04:40Gotta have something in here.
04:41You definitely don't need any more of those.
04:43You're taking money out of my pocket.
04:44But Tyler has to learn how to deal with all sorts of people in this business.
04:48What's up, Tyler?
04:48Not your favorite?
04:49You're awkward.
04:50So what do you got?
04:51Well, I don't really need to sell you anything today.
04:53I actually called you up to show you something that I want to get restored.
04:56I found some kind of vending machine down on this reservation, and I'm thinking it might be worth something if
05:01we press it up right.
05:02What do you think?
05:04What it is, I mean, this company, H. DeGreniere, he was like the pioneer of candy machines.
05:09He built nothing but vending candy machines.
05:12It's probably late 30s.
05:13It's very Art Deco.
05:14It's very cool looking.
05:16Where do they have that?
05:16Movie theaters and stuff like that?
05:18Dad things?
05:18Yeah.
05:19Yeah, places like that.
05:20It was a selector.
05:20So it holds 12 different kinds.
05:22So that's 72.
05:24That's a good math.
05:25Wow.
05:26So maybe you smarter than my dog.
05:29All right.
05:30Well, let me just go about telling you how I'd restore it just like I would a normal customer.
05:34You're saying I'm abnormal?
05:35Yes, I am.
05:36You are abnormal.
05:36I'm just saying at the moment, this is what it is.
05:38First of all, this scene that's missing is going to be really hard.
05:40You're either going to have to try to find one of these, or you're going to have to try to
05:43make one of these.
05:44That's going to be probably the most difficult thing on the whole exterior of the machine.
05:50Then all in here.
05:51Okay, we got to make sure those all work again.
05:53And then inside, these actually for slots for candy bars in here.
05:57So all these are going to have to be reworked so that they work again.
06:00Well, I got to tell you, when I called you, I was thinking under a grand.
06:03I was hoping we could get this done for.
06:06Tyler, you're all over this one.
06:07Since it's Eric.
06:08No, Tyler.
06:09Wait a minute.
06:10I want a good deal.
06:10He's going to double it.
06:12$3,500.
06:13That's the best.
06:13What?
06:14Come on.
06:14You're killing me.
06:15You're killing me.
06:15Come on, Rick.
06:16I'm thinking half of that.
06:17I quite honestly think it's $3,500 too.
06:21Really?
06:21Is there any way we can get better than $3,500?
06:24What do you think?
06:25Do it for $32 if you throw in all that crap in the back.
06:28For $28?
06:29Can we do it for $28?
06:30$29.
06:31$28.
06:31$28.
06:32$50.
06:33$28.
06:34$28.
06:35$25.
06:35$28.
06:37$28.
06:38$28.
06:40$28.
06:44$28.
06:44$28.
06:44You got a deal.
06:47Tyler did a great job with the negotiations.
06:50So now we're going to head back to the shop and get cracking on this right away.
06:57We are not off to a good start on this jukebox.
07:00The gears are shot.
07:01The coin mech is stuck.
07:02It just doesn't pay to waste time and manpower on this.
07:05The pressure coming out of that nozzle right there is 50,000 PSI.
07:09That's a lot of pressure.
07:12My cat hasn't been feeling well, so we're taking him to the vet.
07:15If I get my ass to you, the cat was not going to be my friend no more.
07:29Freedom!
07:32Let's see what you got.
07:33Let's see.
07:35Where's the manual at?
07:37Please.
07:40We're restoring a 1940s candy machine for a local client.
07:43Kyle and Dave are trying to figure out the mechanism so we can get it working again.
07:47Got all these things figured out, I think.
07:49These right here are all seized up, but we still can't get it to operate off the button here, though.
07:54So this lever is supposed to grab this lever, push this down, see how it's cut the teeth?
07:58Right.
08:00Okay.
08:01That's clicking our shells.
08:03Yeah.
08:03When the shells flap up and the candy falls off the back, then open up the door and get your
08:07snack on.
08:09That did something.
08:10I think what we need to do is get this thing moved up, see what's moving and what's not.
08:15Get it all soaked up?
08:16Yeah.
08:22There we go.
08:23Okay.
08:24While Ron and I were out picking on Route 66, we actually got a restoration job.
08:29So now we're fixing up this awesome 1950s Wurlitzer jukebox.
08:33The first step is to figure out why it won't play any records.
08:37This is the mechanism.
08:38This actually makes this thing work.
08:40Yeah.
08:40It gets this, like, sort of gummy grease and it just freezes up.
08:44Let's plug it in and see what lights up.
08:47Ground him.
08:48Here, hold my hand, Kyle.
08:49A little gut shy there, buddy?
08:51Oh, we got some light.
08:52I hear something rattling.
08:54Yeah.
08:54I don't think it should be.
08:56Yeah, right up in here.
08:58Skipping out of that gear or something there.
09:00Yeah.
09:00Should we try and push a button?
09:01Yeah, yeah.
09:05Straight out of the coin return, we got a jammed mech.
09:07We are not off to a good start on this jukebox.
09:10The gears are shot, the coin mech is stuck,
09:13and it would take days to clean and reassemble hundreds of parts
09:17to figure out what else we need to fix.
09:19Watch that piece.
09:20There you go.
09:21It just doesn't pay to waste time and manpower on this.
09:24So I'm gonna bring in a jukebox expert to fix all the mechanical issues
09:28so we can focus on restoring the rest of this machine.
09:33In the meantime, I'm gonna have Cowboy and Tyler tear down the frame
09:36so we can get started on the woodwork.
09:41Kyle!
09:44My cat, the boy, hasn't been feeling well, so we're taking him to the vet.
09:48You're out your damn mind.
09:50The boy ain't riding in the back, you heartless .
09:53If Kyle tries to put him in the trunk again, he's the one that's gonna need a doctor.
09:57I wasn't gonna really ride him in the trunk.
10:00Yeah, you were.
10:01I know.
10:06There's the boy.
10:08How can I help you?
10:09I need the boy looked at.
10:11He's not feeling well, he's not eating right, and he's coughing.
10:14Well, that doesn't sound good.
10:16Come on in this room right here.
10:18All right, Cowboy, don't be too long.
10:19I'll be waiting.
10:22Hi, guys. Can I sit here?
10:26You look in your eyes.
10:29You like me, don't you?
10:31His teeth look pretty good.
10:33I look better than mine.
10:34Maybe I have to stick you in my pocket and take you home.
10:37He has a little fever, 103.5.
10:40Mmm.
10:41So I guess that explains why he's not feeling too well.
10:44If I get my ass to you, Cowboy's not gonna be my friend no more.
10:53Last chance.
10:55I've been trying to track down a replacement emblem that goes on top of the 1940s canning machine, but I'm
11:00having zero luck.
11:01So while Bretley's sandblasting the case and Phil's hammering away at the bodywork,
11:04I'm heading over to a custom shop to see if we can reproduce an exact duplicate of the emblem with
11:10something called a water jam.
11:12Ted?
11:12Yeah.
11:13Hey, how's it going? I'm Tyler.
11:15Hey, Tyler.
11:15I'm from Rich Restorations.
11:16Yeah. Basically what I do is cut material using water and a sand type abrasive.
11:21Now how are we gonna do this with this giant machine?
11:24Well, I've just got a piece of stainless there. We can cut it out of that.
11:28Once I tell it to go, it's gonna turn on the pump.
11:30We'll get some high pressure water out of the nozzle there.
11:33Yeah.
11:33And that just erodes the material away, following the line of the image there.
11:38So it cuts it out with water, basically.
11:40Water and a little bit of abrasive.
11:42The pressure coming out of that nozzle right there is about 50,000 PSI.
11:46You know, like if the water wasn't in the tank, it would cut right through the bottom of the machine,
11:49it would go through the concrete and start going through the ground.
11:53What?
11:54But the water actually absorbs all that energy, so.
11:57Oh, that's a lot of pressure.
11:58Yeah.
11:59Here we go.
12:03The water jet thing is crazy.
12:05This thing can slice through eight inches of steel like a hot knife through butter.
12:09And all the curves in the letters are coming out nice and smooth.
12:16That's it?
12:17Yeah.
12:17Wow, that was pretty badass.
12:23Nice.
12:24There we go.
12:27Voila!
12:27That's just like the original.
12:29Wow.
12:29Put that on your belt buckle.
12:31Wow.
12:32That's how I do it.
12:40What are you doing?
12:42Sorry, boy, that you have to get a shot.
12:44Oh, you did it.
12:46There you go.
12:46How is it?
12:48Yeah, you're better.
12:50Cut any money?
12:51I'll cut you again.
12:52Kyle, the boy is all fixed up.
12:56It's about time.
12:57The lady doctor gave my boy some medicine, so he'll be right as rain in no time.
13:01Somehow I turned into a scratching post.
13:05Bad news is, we're two hours late.
13:07We're gonna have hell to pay when we get back to the shop.
13:14I decided to give the candy machine a black and gray color scheme to give it a sleek and modern
13:19look.
13:20It'll really compliment the stainless steel emblem once it's polished up.
13:24Tyler suggested that we have Ted do the decals and the pinstripe in red, which was a great call.
13:30Because this thing is starting to look really cool.
13:41Where the heck have you guys been?
13:44There was a hundred cats at the cat hospital.
13:46You guys are like two hours past your lunch break.
13:49I didn't even get a lunch.
13:50I mean, what the hell?
13:51I got Tyler and Ron in doing your job.
13:55Okay?
13:55So who knows what got messed up.
13:57Great.
13:58So I need you to get back in there, but you guys owe me two hours.
14:01I'll do his two hours because he couldn't handle them.
14:04Don't call me for a ride home either.
14:12We still got a ways to go on the Wurlitzer jukebox restoration.
14:16Cowboy and Tyler are doing the woodwork on the frame.
14:18And then we're going to reupholster the side pieces with a nice plush fabric.
14:22And PJ, the jukebox expert, is cleaning every nook and cranny on the internal neck
14:27so that everything runs as smooth as silk.
14:30It lives again.
14:31So now we're going to finish up restoring the rest of the exterior, and then we're good to go.
14:43Hey, I got to take off.
14:45I got to go to Arizona and deliver that jukebox.
14:48I'll be back.
14:49It'll probably be tonight though.
14:50Okay.
14:50All right.
14:50I'll see you later.
14:51See ya.
15:07Oh God.
15:08What's up, Scrummy?
15:10Why are you here?
15:10I'm here to get my machine.
15:11Where is it?
15:12I told you we'd call you when it was done.
15:13Well, your dad did call me and said, come get it.
15:15I don't know why he would call you if he just went out to deliver something to somebody else.
15:18Your customer's always right.
15:20What am I?
15:21Customer.
15:22Oversized.
15:22Customer.
15:23Just hold on and I'll go check.
15:26I can't even get a break.
15:27I bet it was missing something in candy and it was supposed to be Tyler's job to get this
15:31thing fixed, right?
15:32Whether he did it or not, I don't know.
15:33I got no faith in that kid.
15:35I got a surprise for you.
15:41So, it is done.
15:42Look at that.
15:43Wow.
15:43Red too, huh?
15:44Yeah.
15:45Whose idea was that?
15:46Tell me it was yours, please.
15:47It was.
15:47I promise.
15:48You brought the red in, huh?
15:49I brought the red.
15:49I brought it to the table.
15:50Man, that's just awesome.
15:53No, you're not going to want to do that.
15:54Oh God.
15:57You're such a freak.
16:00Finally, you did something worthwhile.
16:03It's just beautiful.
16:04I like Harley Davison's and that's got crumbies.
16:06I'm just a big chrome guy and then black and silver.
16:09Well, obviously, I'm a black and silver guy.
16:10Look at the way I dress.
16:13God, I think you just cracked my back in about six places.
16:15That's good for you.
16:17That's gonna make me taller.
16:18So, did you really do this?
16:20Well, that was one of the biggest challenges we had.
16:22That was water jetted out.
16:23It shoots out at like 50,000 PSI and it's crazy.
16:26That's a lot of PSI.
16:27Ted did all of these nice letters.
16:29This is the one big decal.
16:30He drew this all from just freehand, but it's cleared over.
16:34So, I mean, this is never going to peel off any of this.
16:36And then I decided to do the red pen stripe down the side
16:39just to match with the candy and then it blends.
16:40You decided?
16:41Yeah, and it blends the colors with the menu.
16:44I'm gonna be so tall by the end of this.
16:46Does it really got all this candy in it?
16:48There it is.
16:50How do you like that?
16:51Oh man, that is just it.
16:53So, it's built to hold 72 candy bars.
16:55And on the front, you can display 12 different brands of candies.
16:58Does it work?
16:59Yeah.
16:59Show me.
17:00You ready?
17:00Sure.
17:01Make it work.
17:02Make it work.
17:02All right.
17:03It says to operate, insert nickel.
17:06Nickel's in.
17:07So, you push that button in.
17:09You pull this lever all the way out.
17:12Yay!
17:13Yay!
17:15We have candy bar.
17:16You can have that one.
17:18That's awesome.
17:19Happy with it?
17:20I'm happy.
17:21Good.
17:21Thanks again.
17:22No problem.
17:22I'm gonna give Tyler maybe this much credit for now.
17:25Until I see more of his work.
17:26But I'll give him a slap on the back really good for this one.
17:301940s is a great era, this thing, and all the chrome work.
17:32It's just beautiful.
17:35Ron and I are on our way back to Route 66 to deliver this jukebox.
17:40Mother of God!
17:41Well, we came down for a reason, right?
17:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:46Three.
17:47Booyah!
17:48What do you think?
17:55Ron and I are on our way back to Route 66 to deliver this fully restored 1950s jukebox.
18:01I just wish we would have checked the weather forecast, because this part of Arizona feels
18:05more like Alaska.
18:06Man.
18:07Look at all the snow.
18:11Holy...
18:11It's freezing out here.
18:13It's freezing.
18:14Did you eat your Wheaties?
18:16Every day.
18:18Mother of God!
18:21Hi, I'm Rick.
18:22Hi, Rick.
18:23My name's Mirna.
18:24Very nice to meet you.
18:24Good to meet you.
18:25Is Angel here?
18:26No, he's not here right now.
18:28Okay, good.
18:28That's perfect.
18:29We're gonna go ahead and get this set up.
18:31Okay.
18:32Luckily, Angel's out to lunch.
18:34So we're gonna try to set this thing up before he gets back.
18:36How about there?
18:37Yeah, that's good.
18:44Hey.
18:45Look who's there.
18:48I'm glad you're still riding a bicycle.
18:50Oh, my God.
18:51And I'm gonna ride it till I'm 100.
18:54Yeah, well, we came down for a reason, right?
18:57Yeah, yeah, yeah.
18:59Okay, let's go on in.
19:01You ready?
19:01I've been ready.
19:03God!
19:04Hold on.
19:04Over here.
19:05Look, you look like straight gangsters.
19:08Wow, I feel like the Lone Ranger.
19:11They took so much care to make it so special for me.
19:16A little bit more.
19:17Gosh.
19:18Here we go.
19:19One, two, three.
19:22Booyah.
19:23What do you think?
19:24Man.
19:25When they took the veil off of me, I was just speechless.
19:29Wow.
19:30You like it?
19:30Check it out.
19:32It's just beautiful.
19:33It's a beautiful moment.
19:37So here's what we did.
19:38We ended up taking it apart, and I mean it came all the way apart.
19:41All this wood on here totally came off.
19:43Every single piece.
19:44So we sanded it all down and then restained it.
19:47You see how it's got that real nice maple finish on it?
19:50It's just absolutely awesome.
19:51I remember the box, how it was.
19:54Then you look at it as it is now, and it's almost unbelievable.
20:00We ended up sending all the chrome to the chrome shop,
20:03re-chrome plating everything.
20:04Chrome plated?
20:05Yep.
20:05It came out nice.
20:06It's a beautiful chrome job.
20:07All the plates that hold the records inside here got re-chrome plated.
20:11Oh, man.
20:12The coin shoot in here, we went through and re-did all this.
20:15And all behind here has been all redone.
20:17All these switches and levers and everything.
20:19Oh, my gosh.
20:20I hadn't noticed.
20:22Hey, money.
20:24Christmas.
20:25It looks beautiful, but will it play?
20:29Will it work?
20:29Oh, I forgot about that now.
20:31You forgot?
20:33Well, here's the deal.
20:34We got to the inside, and there is thousands of wires.
20:37I'm glad I wasn't there, because I'd have had a stroke.
20:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
20:39Believe me, I almost had a stroke.
20:41Make this baby play.
20:42Yeah.
20:43Go ahead.
20:43Let it rip.
20:49Here it comes.
20:50It is.
20:56Dude, this is my jam.
21:06Good old dad.
21:08That was a dance.
21:09Rick and his brother have brought history back to life right in that building.
21:16That just makes my day.
21:18Well, that makes me feel great, Angel, that I did that for you.
21:21And it's awesome.
21:22I really appreciate you letting me do it for you, you know?
21:25All right.
21:26Oh, coming in for the hug.
21:29Nice.
21:29Thanks.
21:32You bet.
21:33Now, I need you to take me to your cash register.
21:37Huh?
21:39Cash register.
21:40All of a sudden, his hearing isn't so good.
21:42You're going to get my mask off then.
21:43I thought you were going to...
21:44Take me to your cash, Angel.
21:47Okay, follow me.
21:48All right.
21:50Wow.
21:51I thought you were just going to take off and say goodbye, and I was going to say thank
21:56you.
21:56I almost be in the...
21:56Ha ha ha!
21:57Ha ha ha...
21:58Ha ha ha!
