00:00Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney unveils a sweeping multi-billion dollar defence strategy
00:06designed to strengthen the country's armed forces and reduce reliance on the United States.
00:12Described as Canada's first comprehensive defence industrial plan,
00:17he says the strategy reflects what the government sees as a shifting global security environment.
00:24Carney said Canada could no longer depend solely on geography or long-standing U.S. protection to guarantee its safety.
00:32The plan commits more than 500 billion Canadian dollars to national security over the coming years.
00:39Of that total, 180 billion dollars will be allocated to military procurement,
00:44while 290 billion will be invested in defence and security infrastructure.
00:48Carney, who has been openly critical of U.S. President Donald Trump,
00:53argued that changing global alliances require Canada to build a more self-reliant defence base.
00:59At the same time, he stressed that greater independence would not mean isolation.
01:05Ottawa has already joined the European Union's Security Action for Europe programme
01:09and is exploring closer defence partnerships in Asia, including with South Korea,
