00:00Shaikh Dawood Ismail, the former Court of Appeal judge, has passed away at his residence
00:05in Kuala Lumpur this morning after battling a lung infection.
00:09Lawyer Shafi Abdullah confirmed that the 90-year-old passed at about 11.11 a.m. after being discharged
00:16from hospital yesterday.
00:18He said Shaikh Dawood was the best trial judge and appellate judge he had ever appeared before
00:23and was one of the most illustrious judges, noting that many landmark cases were heard
00:27before him, including the widely cited Kerry Wiley case, which involved an American national
00:32charged with drug trafficking.
00:34The Penang-born Shaikh Dawood started his career in the legal and judicial service in 1963 and
00:40was appointed as a high court judge in 1983.
00:43He retired from the Court of Appeal in 2001.
00:46He was known for numerous memorable legal battles in white-collar crime and corruption cases during
00:51the early 1970s, notably against the late lawyer Edgar Joseph Jr., who later retired
00:57as a federal court judge.
00:59Meanwhile, Malaysian Bar President Ezri Abdul Wahab said it is deeply saddened by Shaikh
01:04Dawood's passing and praised his long-dedicated judicial service and significant contributions
01:09to Malaysian jurisprudence.
01:12Senior lawyer Bastien Pius Van Dargen described Shaikh Dawood as a patient, courteous and balanced
01:17judge who embodied the qualities of a true gentleman and ensured fair hearings for all.
01:22Another senior lawyer, Pius Ranjan, recalled being deeply impressed by Shaikh Dawood's advocacy
01:29and judicial excellence, calling him a great jurist and the chief justice we never had.
