01:42We've deployed about $3.4 billion in the ecosystem in Africa, about half of it over the last two years,
01:49which means that we are on a growing trend.
01:50So we will continue. We want to finance the ecosystem in Africa, finance startups, finance the infrastructure that is needed,
01:59finance the education that is needed, and also work with governments on helping to improve regulations so that we can
02:06have a more vibrant tech sector.
02:09Yes, you have been very early on financing the tech sector. What drove you to go to the tech sector?
02:17Because most of the people believe that in Africa we should go to basic resources.
02:22Because tech sector is the future. And Africa is the future. So you have to bring those together. The biggest
02:30opportunities are in Africa. Young population, dynamic, level of education that is going up, middle class, ready to invest in
02:39this and participate in this new economy, and talent.
02:43I mean, you just walk around here, talk with some of our young entrepreneurs from Africa, and you have brilliant
02:49minds with brilliant ideas. So very early, we realized that this is the future, and we wanted to play a
02:54part on it, and as a development institution to support it.
02:58This is something we shared, because when I decided that we should create Africa Tech at VivaTech, it's something which
03:08was very important to me and to a lot of people in our organization.
03:15And we were facing the skepticism of a lot of observation, and we were facing the skepticism of a lot
03:21of observers saying, but startups is the Silicon Valley, startups is Korea, is Israel, is China, Africa, and startups. Africa
03:34and innovation, this is not going to connect.
03:40So, have you found in the continent, enough startups, enough initiative, entrepreneurs, people willing to transform the country and to
03:55innovate?
03:56First, Maurice, I fully agree with what you said. I mean, I think we share that vision, and you've been
04:01a pioneer in supporting Africa's tech, and I have to really thank you and really, really congratulate you for that.
04:09amazing vision that you had very, very early on, when people, as you said, were very skeptical. And to your
04:15question, whether I see these companies, of course, and I would invite anyone to just get on a plane, go
04:20to Lagos, go to Cape Town, go to Cairo, go to Nairobi.
04:25In these cities, you already have ecosystems that are extremely vibrant. And innovation, what we very often forget, is that
04:34a lot of companies in the Silicon Valley, a lot of companies here in Europe,
04:38they recruit talent from Africa, and we have a lot of very brilliant minds that actually stay in Africa, a
04:45lot of companies in those cities I was mentioning, that are working in synergy with these companies around the world,
04:52and are bringing solutions, are bringing new ideas, are bringing innovation. So this is not, maybe 10 years ago was
04:59the vision, but today is the reality.
05:00We should keep the talent. We should not let the company, the Silicon Valley stealing the talent, because if you
05:09want to grow, and if you want to grow the business, you need the most important ingredient, which is the
05:16talent.
05:16Absolutely. We have to encourage Africans to go back. We have to encourage other countries to go and participate. And
05:23the talent I see there works across the world. And I think that's the beauty of the tech world. We
05:28can work anywhere and contribute. So Africa is getting more and more integrated in the world economy. It's also getting
05:34more and more integrated within Africa. And that creates a huge market and huge opportunities.
05:40Okay. As we move on, and as we move on, the Africa tech award, can you tell us a little
05:49bit how this has progressed? And if you are happy with the difference this year compared to last year?
05:58So the Africa tech awards is a fantastic, fantastic initiative. And again, thank you for really sponsoring it, pioneering it,
06:08and having the opportunity.
06:09You have the champion.
06:11Exactly.
06:11Can I ask for a big round of applause for her?
06:15To create the Africa tech award.
06:20She is the real champion.
06:22So I would say two things about the evolution. First one is that every year we get more nominations.
06:28And every year it gets harder to make decisions on who the winner is.
06:32There's nominations have been growing every, every year.
06:36The second point, which is, I think, even more beautiful than nominations,
06:40is that the award winners of the previous years, we've been following them.
06:44We've been seeing what they've been doing.
06:46And they've been so successful.
06:48They've been opening new markets.
06:50They've been raising more capital.
06:51They've been expanding their business.
06:53They've been growing their sales.
06:54So here, this award, whoever is going to get these three little things back home,
06:59it's not just a nice thing to put on the shelf.
07:02It's going to be an assurance of a very brilliant future.
07:05So maybe we will now let them getting their award because they are impatient.
07:12They are willing to know who is the winner.
07:15And we will let the ceremony start.
07:22I don't know exactly what is going on.
07:26Well, we need to go let them come in.
07:29They're coming.
07:30They are coming.
07:31And they will tell us how it's going to go.
07:33They are coming.
07:34Thank you both for your remarks.
07:37Arian, merci.
07:37So, we let you.
07:40Thank you.
07:41Merci.
07:42Now, before we begin this award ceremony, I would like to explain to you what the process selection was.
07:47First, we received around 382 applications from 33 African countries.
07:57This is a great achievement for the second edition.
08:02Deloitte, our knowledge partner, reviewed all the applications to narrow down the most promising startups in each category.
08:11Then, a jury composed of the rest of our partners and experts in the Africa tech space agreed on nine
08:21finalists.
08:23Now, some members of the jury are here with us.
08:26And the nine representatives of the finally startups are also here with us.
08:32So, please give them a round of applause.
08:40Now, today we will be selecting three winners.
08:45One for each category.
08:48Allow me to introduce you to the finalists.
08:51Representing the climate tech category, Kubik, Cumulus Water, and Oco.
08:59The finalists in the FinTech category are Asante, Financial Services Group, Bizao, and Curacel.
09:09The finalists for the health tech category are Ilara Health, Maidawa, and Waspito.
09:18I hope I'm pronouncing some of them well enough.
09:23So, let's get to it.
09:25Bill Sonborn will take it from here.
09:27He is the IFC Global Director for Disruptive Technologies, Creative Industries, and Funds.
09:35One could say he is the one who conceptualized the awards and the partnership between IFC and Viva Tech.
09:44So, I couldn't think of a better person leading the rest of the awards.
09:49Please give him a warm welcome.
09:59The floor is yours.
10:01Thank you.
10:01And thanks everyone.
10:03A warm welcome to all the entrepreneurs and investors in the room today who are watching around the world online.
10:11I'm Bill Sonborn, and we are about ready to launch officially and finally the Africa Tech Awards.
10:19Before we do, I want to take a moment to thank our partner, Viva Tech, who's been unbelievably valuable the
10:27last two years.
10:28And I also want to thank our knowledge partners, Deloitte, who helped in the jury and selection process to make
10:35sure it's rigid and honest.
10:37As well as our knowledge partner, Silverback.
10:40Thank you all.
10:44I'm also really, really grateful for our sponsors of these awards, which include Cassava Technology, Helios Investment Partners, OCP, and
10:55Site Ground.
10:56A round of applause for them.
10:58We couldn't do it without you.
10:59Thank you.
11:00These awards are a celebration of African innovation.
11:04But most importantly, they are a platform to help the most promising and impactful startups on the continent get global
11:11visibility and connect with new partners and from investors from around the world on tech's biggest stage, Viva Tech in
11:20Paris.
11:22Last year, the three winning startups were able to leverage this award to grow their business and multiply their impact.
11:29I'll give you some examples.
11:30The e-waste recycling company, We Center, that won the Climate Tech Award last year, signed new agreements and expanded
11:37from Kenya to 15 countries, becoming the largest and fastest growing e-recycling business on the continent.
11:44The Cairo-based pharmaceutical delivery platform that specializes in patients with chronic diseases.
11:52It was founded by a woman CEO, Chefa, expanded it only in Egypt, across Egypt, but also entered Saudi Arabia
12:01as a new market.
12:03Speaking of women founders, last week in Abidjan, IFC announced She Wins Africa.
12:09A big program that will happen this fall to recognize women founders on the continent.
12:15So all women watching in the audience or online, stay tuned for that in the fall.
12:23And the South African insure tech startup that won FinTech last year, Click2Sure, has grown by more than 40%
12:30since winning the award, while continuing to disrupt how insurance is bought and sold in multiple countries in Africa.
12:37The success of these three startups and many startups in Africa is a victory for all of us who believe
12:44in Africa's potential.
12:46And it serves as a powerful inspiration for the hundreds of thousands of talented entrepreneurs on the continent.
12:53That's why I'm particularly proud to see that this year's edition of the awards received that 30% increase in
12:59applications versus last year.
13:01This is another sign of the buzzing energy of Africa tech ecosystems.
13:06And the nine startups that made it to the finals are great examples of that dynamism.
13:13Congratulations to all of our finalists.
13:15Your innovative solutions are making a real difference to the lives of millions of people.
13:21You are winners regardless of which three of you.
13:24Take home the awards.
13:27A team of experts helped judge the awards.
13:30I thank them.
13:31And speaking of which, without further ado, let's get to the health tech category award winner.
13:39This sector holds an unprecedented promise for a healthier and more inclusive future for Africa.
13:45In a population that's going to double over the next 20 years, that already has too few physicians relative to
13:51the existing population, the only answer to increase health outcomes in the continent is tech.
14:00And many entrepreneurs and startups in the continent are working to solve that very challenge.
14:05Health tech startups are leveraging AI, including generative AI, as well as disruptive technologies to improve diagnosis, develop new treatments,
14:15and enable individuals to access medicines and health services more efficiently than happens in Western markets.
14:23And more affordably than happens in Western markets.
14:26Opportunity to leapfrog in the future of healthcare.
14:28Today we honor three startups that are driving this innovation.
14:32Opening new markets and most importantly improving and saving lives.
14:37The three nominees for this category are
14:40Ilara Health, Mydawa, and Waspito.
14:45Will all of you please stand?
14:55And the winner of the 2023 Health Tech category is waspito.
15:14Please come up to the stage.
15:16Sous-titrage Société Radio-Canada
15:48Thanks to investors.
15:50I see some of you in the room.
15:51Zach, Mariam, Potential.
15:57And most especially to the organizers of VivaTech.
16:00This is a great opportunity.
16:02Thank you, IFC as well.
16:04It's a great platform to elevate some startups
16:08from relatively smaller countries,
16:11like where I'm from, Cameroon.
16:12I hope this gives hope to many other startups
16:16in Cameroon today to know that they too can do it.
16:19They too should keep working.
16:21We can also be outstanding on the continent.
16:24And let's together try and solve this health problem,
16:27which is very big.
16:28Thank you very much.
16:31Congratulations again.
16:33Thank you, Sean.
16:37The next category is fintech.
16:41As almost all of you probably know,
16:43Africa is actually a global powerhouse leapfrogging
16:46most markets around the world when it comes to fintech.
16:49Just think of mobile money.
16:51In 2022, more than half of active mobile money accounts
16:55and payments made worldwide occurred in one continent, Africa.
17:01Fintech is the fastest-growing sector in the continent,
17:03and it's no surprise that it's also the category
17:06where we receive the highest number of nominations
17:08and is getting the highest amount of funding on the continent.
17:13I want to thank Cassava Technology
17:15and Helios Investment Partners for sponsoring this category.
17:18And I would like to invite on stage Wally Ayeni,
17:22Managing Director of Helios Digital Ventures,
17:24and Ify Jibbuno, Chief Marketing Officer of Cassava Technologies.
17:45Start with a few words.
17:47I'd like to thank you for actually thinking about
17:52and conceptualizing these awards.
17:55I'm going to keep my remarks quite short
17:58because I'm sure the suspense is quite big here.
18:01It's great to be in the room with people that believe in Africa,
18:05and then Helios, we really think about what does that actually mean.
18:09And for us, believing in Africa is having a very long-term view.
18:14That means whether it rains, whether it shines, whether you fall down,
18:20whether you get up, we're always going to be there.
18:23We're not going anywhere.
18:24So that long-term view is kind of what Africa needs,
18:28and that is what we're really, really super focused on.
18:31And the message I want to leave the room here with
18:34is actually for the people that didn't win.
18:39You know, it's very important to know that all startups,
18:42you guys are the ones that are reimagining Africa.
18:46You're rethinking what Africa is.
18:48So even if you didn't win the prize today,
18:52I want to say congratulations
18:53because you didn't win the prize,
18:56but you are part of the journey
18:58and you're part of the dream of building Africa.
19:00So thank you.
19:05First and foremost,
19:06I would like to say congratulations to all the applicants.
19:10The incredible number of people that applied
19:13is a true testament to the fact that Africa is rising,
19:18has risen,
19:19and is the cornerstone of future growth.
19:22It's super exciting to be among you all
19:26who are catalysts of the innovation
19:29and the future that is Africa.
19:32So many studies have demonstrated
19:34how Africa is the cornerstone
19:36of the growth of the global business environment,
19:40and I'm very proud to be part of that journey.
19:43At Cassava Technologies,
19:44we believe in a digitally connected future
19:47that leaves no African behind.
19:49But without the ecosystem,
19:51without each and every one of you here today,
19:54without the IFC,
19:55without VivaTech,
19:56we will not make it very far.
19:59We need to go together
20:00to really achieve what we need to achieve.
20:03So congratulations to everyone,
20:05and very proud to be on the stage.
20:10Thank you again, Wally and Ify,
20:13for your remarks.
20:15Remind everyone of the three finalists
20:18in the FinTech category.
20:20Asante Financial Services Group,
20:23Biziao,
20:24and Curacao.
20:26Could you all please stand?
20:32Congratulations to the finalists.
20:36And now,
20:37Ify and Wally,
20:37I'll let you announce the winner.
20:39With pleasure.
20:39And the winner is Curacao.
20:49I should give him the winner.
20:51Let's give him the winner.
20:55Congratulations.
20:56Congratulations.
20:59Congratulations.
21:02Congratulations.
21:05Woo!
21:06I didn't see that coming.
21:09Thank you, everybody.
21:11I want to say special thanks
21:12to VivaTech
21:13for this special opportunity.
21:16It's been an incredible couple of days
21:19for myself
21:20and a member of my team
21:21who's been here.
21:23We've seen very great interests,
21:25and it's very inspiring.
21:28For us,
21:29we're an insurtech.
21:30We work in insurance.
21:31Insurance is the Dom brother
21:33in FinTech.
21:35You know,
21:36nobody,
21:37very few people
21:37are interested in insurance.
21:39And so this is very inspiring
21:40for us
21:41on the journey,
21:42on the very hard journey
21:43of getting insurance penetration
21:45off from 2%.
21:48This, you know,
21:49dedication, obviously,
21:50to this,
21:50to my team.
21:51Very hardworking young people.
21:53Very inspiring young people.
21:56And I'm very glad
21:57to be here
21:59to take this home for them.
22:00Again,
22:00appreciation
22:01to some of our investors
22:02who are here.
22:04Very interestingly,
22:05to the Tenyi Lumilu Foundation,
22:06who really wrote me
22:07one of the first checks,
22:08you know,
22:08a couple of years ago.
22:10You know,
22:10to a few other investors here.
22:12Zach is in the room
22:13and a few other guys.
22:15I'm grateful.
22:16Thank you very much.
22:23Last but not least,
22:25it's time to announce
22:26our final prize of the evening,
22:28the Climate Tech Award.
22:29Climate Tech is critically important
22:32for the health
22:32and prosperity
22:33of people in Africa
22:34because climate change
22:35is having,
22:36while it's having dramatic impacts
22:37on the entire world,
22:39it can really be felt
22:40in the global south.
22:42Developing countries
22:43are most affected by it.
22:45They don't benefit
22:46from climate
22:48and related air conditioning
22:49and other things.
22:50From decarbonizing
22:52heavy industries
22:53to better ways to recycle
22:54and new solutions
22:55to protect farmers
22:56from droughts
22:57and extreme weather events,
22:58technology is opening
23:00new pathways,
23:01not only for climate mitigation,
23:04but importantly,
23:05for climate adaptation.
23:06I want to thank OCP
23:08and SiteGround
23:09for sponsoring this category.
23:12Unfortunately,
23:12SiteGround's not here,
23:13so I'll give a few words
23:15for them.
23:15SiteGround is a leading
23:16website hosting
23:17and software development company
23:18with a mission
23:20to revolutionize the industry.
23:22SiteGround transcends
23:23the role
23:24of traditional service provider
23:25by creating
23:26cutting-edge solutions
23:27that ensure optimal performance,
23:29security,
23:30and reliability
23:31for its platform.
23:32Now they're applying
23:33these same values
23:34and experience
23:36to other fields
23:37to use technology
23:39to invest in sustainable
23:40and environmentally friendly initiatives.
23:43SiteGround,
23:44thank you for your sponsorship.
23:49Now for the award presentation,
23:51I would like to invite
23:52on stage
23:53my friend Hisham El-Habti,
23:55president of Muhammad VI
23:57Polytechnic University.
23:59He's representing
24:00not only the university,
24:01but also the fact
24:03that the university
24:03was founded
24:04by the OCP Foundation,
24:05OCP.
24:07Hisham,
24:08please come out.
24:19Hi, everyone.
24:22Very happy to be here
24:23this afternoon.
24:24As it has just been mentioned,
24:26Africa is responsible
24:28for less than 4%
24:29of the world's gas emissions.
24:32but it's the most,
24:34it's the continent
24:36that's the most suffering
24:36from this old climate change.
24:39That's why at UM6P,
24:41thanks to OCP support,
24:43we are helping,
24:44supporting all the startups
24:46that are eager
24:47to help Africa
24:48defrog the development
24:50and to be in the mindset
24:51of adaptation
24:52to this old climate change.
24:54So we're very happy
24:56to support all the youth,
24:57all the ideas
24:58that will enable Africa,
25:00that will enable
25:01these African startups
25:02to have all the support
25:04needed to be
25:05at the forefront
25:06of this innovation.
25:08Thank you.
25:10Thank you, Hisham.
25:13And now I will remind you
25:15of the three finalists
25:17nominees for this category
25:19who are Cubic,
25:21Cumulus Water,
25:22and Oco.
25:24Will you all please stand?
25:29And now, Hisham.
25:31I'll let you
25:31announce the winner.
25:33Yeah.
25:35And the winner is...
25:37Cubic.
25:55Thank you again
25:57for this really wonderful...
25:59and as always,
26:01very emotional honor.
26:04We need to live
26:05in a very livable world
26:06and unfortunately,
26:09that's becoming tougher
26:10every day,
26:10but I just want to talk
26:11about our continent a bit.
26:15About 60 million tons
26:17of plastic
26:19goes unrecycled
26:21in Africa.
26:22Over 100 million people
26:24don't have a place
26:26where they can call home.
26:29And unfortunately,
26:30Africa is the one
26:31that's bearing the burden
26:32of climate change.
26:34If you go to any
26:35African country,
26:36agriculture is probably
26:37the one thing
26:38that we're really good at.
26:41And climate change
26:43hits hard there.
26:45I think when we started
26:46Cubic,
26:47my co-founder,
26:48Panda,
26:48and I were both parents.
26:50We said to ourselves,
26:51is this company
26:52that we're building
26:53something that is worth
26:55failing for?
26:56We didn't care about success.
26:58We wanted to know,
26:59if we failed tomorrow,
27:00is it worth it?
27:01And the answer was yes,
27:02because we could tell our kids
27:03we did something
27:05that was worth it
27:06for them,
27:06and we tried.
27:07So with that,
27:08I'm really excited
27:09that we've brought together
27:11some of the most passionate,
27:12some of the smartest people
27:14onto the team.
