00:00What I want out of this project is to have something
00:03that my dad is stoked about.
00:06I think that we take this down to that nice grassy area.
00:09Straighten up.
00:10Straighten your wheel.
00:11He built this thing by himself when he was almost
00:14the exact same age as Alex.
00:16Yep.
00:18And now my daughter and I get to remodel this.
00:22We did it.
00:24And then we get to bring it back for dad.
00:26Oh, now like we measured it.
00:29One.
00:30Two.
00:31Three.
00:33Oh, my God.
00:35It's beautiful.
00:38My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:41But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:43This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:46Everyone clear?
00:46I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:50Woo-hoo!
00:51But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:54Whoa.
00:55It looks so good in here.
00:57We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:00Whoa!
01:02I'm awake now.
01:03What if we did use a plane?
01:04Wait, really?
01:05All right, Alex.
01:06She's all yours.
01:08Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:10Oh, my God.
01:11It's so amazing.
01:13And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:15I love you.
01:16Oh, my God.
01:17Look at that.
01:18Look at that.
01:18Look at that.
01:18But the best part...
01:22...is we get to do it together.
01:39Building has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.
01:43I built for clients, built for friends and family, but never for the person who taught me how to build
01:48in the first place.
01:49I'm talking about my dad, Larry Kapp.
01:53He showed me how to drive a nail straight, read the grain of wood before making a cut, weld metal
02:02so clean it looked like one piece.
02:06He taught me to build more than just structures, but how to create spaces that hold people, stories, and love.
02:15And last night, I had an idea.
02:17A project I could do just for him.
02:21Will this one work, kiddo?
02:23Yeah.
02:24What are you working on?
02:25Some parsley?
02:26Yes.
02:27They're so healthy in here.
02:28Everything is very happy.
02:29Good job.
02:30Very happy.
02:30Mama's very happy in here, too.
02:32Mm-hmm.
02:32Oh, my God.
02:33That is so big!
02:35I'm so glad we made this for her.
02:38Yeah, it was really exciting.
02:40I think it was yesterday when we had Mom and Penny out here.
02:43Oh, fun.
02:44And they had so much fun, especially since we had a lot of new flowers in here, since that's Mom's
02:50favorite.
02:50Right.
02:51When Mom and Penny were in here, putzing around, I was driving with Dad around our property.
02:56He wanted to go sit at the fireside.
02:59He said this thing to me, and it sort of caught me off guard a little bit.
03:02I never thought I would be so lucky to sit here and look at this view.
03:07Aw.
03:08Right?
03:09And I said to him, I said, well, Dad, you can come out here anytime you want.
03:12And he said, well, no, I don't want to be a bother to you kids.
03:15But he said, they don't need an old man sitting here.
03:16So last night I was just laying in bed thinking about what we could do for him out here so
03:21he could enjoy the space.
03:23Well, I know that he sits on his front porch in Spearfish a lot.
03:26But I never thought about, like, the fact that he just has to look at Main Street.
03:29Right, yeah, just not quite as peaceful on his porch with traffic.
03:33But if you got a minute, I'd like to show you something.
03:37Yeah, sure.
03:37Okay.
03:41Did you just eat some?
03:43They're parsley.
03:44It's good for you.
03:48So when Dad moved from Long Valley, where the ranch was that he grew up on, to Spearfish, just a
03:54little older than you are now, he think he was just turned 17.
03:57Oh, wow.
04:00And there was only two bedrooms in the house.
04:02So Grandma and Grandpa got one, and all four kids were supposed to be in one.
04:06And Dad was not interested.
04:09He was the only boy, right?
04:11Yes, he has three sisters.
04:12Yep.
04:13When my grandparents bought the old motel in Spearfish, Dad noticed an unused tool shed on the property.
04:19So he remodeled that building into a bedroom.
04:23So he lived out there by himself when he was your age.
04:26And then after that, Grandpa and Grandma put a number on it, 15, and used it for a room.
04:32So in like 1989 or 90, somewhere in there, Dad and I remodeled it again.
04:40And there it is.
04:42Wait, how did it end up here?
04:44When the motel was sold and demolished in 93, number 15 was sold off with it.
04:50Then when I bought this land just outside of Spearfish, I was shocked to find it here.
04:54The previous owner of this property was the same person who bought it from the old motel.
04:59That's crazy.
05:00So my thought was, if we could take this building that was originally his, that he remodeled, and turn it
05:07into a space for him again.
05:09That's cool.
05:10Yeah.
05:11I thought about leaving it up here, but it's sort of like the trees obviously block a little bit of
05:16the view.
05:17And the entire point of this is to give him a view.
05:20Right.
05:20So I think we take it down to that grassy area on the other side of the greenhouse, where it'll
05:25be near the fireside, but it'll be out of the way so Dad won't feel like he's bothering anybody.
05:29And it'll have the same view he loved that day we were talking about it.
05:33Are you thinking that the overall structure will stay the same?
05:35I think we turn it sideways and put a big covered porch.
05:39When I imagine it, I see an Appalachian style cabin.
05:42They're known for having an extended roof that kicks out over a long porch.
05:46I wonder if we do like a French door.
05:49Yeah.
05:49I like the French.
05:50Yeah.
05:50And I think that on the front porch that there should definitely be some rocking chairs.
05:55Sure.
05:56At least two.
05:57So even though it is for Larry, I think that there should also be a space for his other half.
06:01Sure.
06:02Yes.
06:02Miss Penny would love to sit in a rocking chair too with them.
06:05I wonder if we can make it a garden or an orchard.
06:08The old motel, we had seven mature apple trees.
06:11Oh, wow.
06:12So I think it would be cool to put an orchard around it.
06:15Do you want to lay out where you want that on that hill?
06:17Okay.
06:18If we're actually going to plant trees, we'll need the fence up real soon.
06:21Okay.
06:21So the deer don't eat the young trees.
06:23Yeah, but let's make it a cool looking fence.
06:26Yeah.
06:27The only other thing that I want to do is just peek inside and see what we're working with.
06:30Dude, it's going to be perfect.
06:32Do you want to see?
06:33Yeah, yeah.
06:34Go for it.
06:35Okay.
06:37Oh, whoa.
06:39This is crazy.
06:43Yeah, I mean, it's not perfect.
06:46They're gross.
06:47I think I'll definitely look into some new furniture.
06:50And we can tear down these interior walls to make one big open space.
06:54Yeah, I can totally see it.
06:56This is definitely workable.
06:59To build my dad's dream getaway, we're stripping his beloved building number 15 down to the bones and relocating it
07:07to the perfect spot where he can enjoy his favorite scenic view unobstructed by the trees.
07:13We're giving it an Appalachian twist by rotating the structure so the side will open up to the landscape and
07:20extending the roof line to create a covered porch.
07:22Inside and out, it'll be transformed into this beautiful rustic hideaway complete with an orchard and a gated fence to
07:30keep the deer out.
07:30My dad doesn't settle for average, so the real challenge here is earning his seal of approval, but Sprout and
07:37I are up for the task.
07:39It would be a perfect thing for him.
07:41When I thought about why it meant so much to me, this was a project that dad and I worked
07:45on just the two of us.
07:47Like, none of my brothers helped.
07:48And I remember it so vividly just because, like, I got to spend just me and dad.
07:53So, I think he'd be tickled to know that his granddaughter was involved in it.
07:57Dude, I'm super jazzed.
07:58Dude, that's gonna be neat.
07:59Awesome.
08:00It was a tiny house before it was a hashtag.
08:15Sprout's back at Granny Flats designing a cool layout for the orchard, and I'm staking out the foundation for Number
08:2115's new home.
08:29My dad's an early riser, and we want him to be able to come here and take in these sunrises
08:34over this amazing view.
08:36Not too bad.
08:43I hear a diesel pickup.
08:45Our man Tanner's here.
08:49Hola, amigo.
08:50How's it going?
08:51How's it going?
08:52Thanks for coming.
08:53Yeah, of course.
08:54We're gonna move that little white building from up on top of the hill down here, and I want the
08:59top of concrete six inches out of the dirt.
09:01Okay, so we'll just go steak to steak.
09:03Yep.
09:03Only special instructions from the kid.
09:05Do not hit the plum tree.
09:07Don't hit it.
09:07Don't.
09:08Don't get anywhere close to it.
09:09She texted me this morning.
09:10Make sure he doesn't touch the plum tree.
09:12Fine.
09:13All right, well, you dig.
09:14I'm gonna call in some reinforcements to form up the foundation.
09:17Sounds good.
09:17Yeah, give me a holler if you need anything.
09:35When folks heard I was doing a build for my dad, they showed up ready to help.
09:58So, Levi, that's why you're here.
10:00That looks a lot nicer than if I did it.
10:01It can't be nice of you to show up.
10:03We just about got her dead.
10:06And here you are.
10:07Listen, I was on some really important calls.
10:09Uh-huh.
10:10Well, since there's no cell service out here, I doubt that.
10:15Yeah, well, I got here before mud, so at least you can abuse me for that part of it.
10:19Well, based off of the plans you didn't give me, how does it look?
10:22Perfect.
10:23Okay, that's what I like.
10:24Perfect.
10:25I think we're ready to pour some concrete.
10:41So we're pouring the footers for the walls, and that's what the building will actually sit on top of.
10:48Many hands make light work.
10:59While the concrete cures for a few days, Sprout jumps into bringing her orchard vision to life.
11:06And sends me out to get the trees.
11:10She's got the plan.
11:11I'm just the guy with the truck.
11:16Hello.
11:17I see that we have some trees.
11:19Yes, it was successful.
11:20So we got apple, pear, plum, and cherry.
11:25Okay.
11:26We'll just get them unloaded from the truck.
11:27We'll get them set around next to each hole, start planting some trees.
11:31So I hope Dad likes this, and I think this is going to be a really cool sort of throwback
11:35to the old motel, but with a little better view.
11:47Once the trees are in, but before they become a buffet for our friendly neighborhood deer, we'll put up a
11:53fence made from repurposed heavy-duty steel posts.
11:57This is drill stem used in well drilling for water wells, as well as oil field work.
12:01And once they reach a certain point, they recycle them.
12:06I'm happy to find a new home for these old pipes.
12:09But I'm even happier I get to break in my shiny new toy.
12:13Give me one tap right there.
12:15A skid steer attachment that pile drives these posts straight into the ground.
12:24This thing is awesome.
12:27My welding buddy, Rodney, and his brother, Austin, weld the angle iron between the fence posts.
12:33Turn and burn, baby. Turn and burn.
12:35This framework will hold the metal panels, which will make up the fence itself.
12:39It'll keep out our four-legged friends.
12:53Tackling a build this big is a lot of work.
12:57So you have to break it up with a little fun.
13:03Sometimes that fun has unintended consequences.
13:07You are looking at it!
13:10You are looking at it!
13:13Give me more! Get out of here!
13:17All righty.
13:19Truce.
13:23Once Sprout dries off, we head up the hill to start removing parts of the building that we don't want
13:28to use.
13:36First thing first, let's get all the interior stuff.
13:39We can start with trim and then drywall, and eventually we'll get rid of all these interior walls.
13:44Be careful.
13:46Right.
13:46I know demoing is exciting.
13:48Today we just work on the inside, and then tomorrow we'll start on the outside.
13:51Okay.
13:51So, you good?
13:52Yep, I'm good.
13:53Okay, let's go.
13:55Jeez!
13:57Nice shotgun.
14:04Here's Cappy.
14:06Demo up front, or before we move it, is to make it lighter.
14:10Sheetrock is heavy.
14:11Windows doors are heavy.
14:12Siding is heavy.
14:13Shingles.
14:14So the lighter we can make it, the easier is to pick it up with the telehandler and take it
14:20to its new home.
14:26Today is a big day on the build.
14:28We're moving the cabin down the hill to its new spot.
14:31That'll happen when I get back.
14:33I'm on the hunt for steel to turn into a custom gate for the orchard fence.
14:38While I'm gone, Sprout's in charge of demoing any unwanted materials from the outside of number 15.
14:44Today we're going to be working on the siding here.
14:47We need to strip it so it'll be a lot lighter for when we move it down onto the orchard.
14:56Each piece of siding overlaps the one below it to give it a weather tight seal.
15:02So, the best way to demo it is top down.
15:06I suppose I should have known that anything that was built by Larry would be well built and hard to
15:12take apart.
15:14Oh.
15:23I'm on my way to Phillip, South Dakota, about two hours east of Spearfish.
15:28I'm looking for some skeletons from a metal fabrication shop that's there.
15:33So, skeletons are these metal pieces that are left over when you cut a part out of a piece of
15:39sheet steel.
15:40And I want to use one as a custom gate for the orchard.
15:46Cappy.
15:46Brad Heltzel.
15:47Nice to meet you.
15:48Nice to meet you.
15:50So pretty.
15:50We've got a couple different mills on this side.
15:53Our CO2 laser, we cut 5 by 10 sheets.
15:56I see why you have golf carts.
15:57Yeah.
15:58We have a big area.
15:59We started in South Dakota, we ended up in Montana.
16:05Oh.
16:06Nice.
16:08Is this what you're after?
16:10Yes.
16:10We've got a whole pile, but if you take one, you've got to take them all.
16:15Deal.
16:18So we got the score of the day.
16:21Do I need all of them?
16:22No.
16:23Am I still going to take them?
16:24Yes.
16:31The demo is done ahead of schedule, and we're waiting on Cappy.
16:35But the weather isn't waiting on us.
16:39Well, Alex, you're the boss, so you make the call.
16:41Are we waiting for Cap, or are we just going to do it?
16:44I say let's start, because if we look out over there,
16:46it looks like it could rain soon.
16:48So I think let's start now.
16:50All right.
16:51Sprout, she's the real deal.
16:52She cares about the project.
16:54She cares about the clients.
16:56She's running the crew like a master.
16:58I couldn't be more proud of that girl.
17:00You're the boss.
17:01He is too late, Pancake, on this one.
17:05Hello.
17:07Hey, kiddo, how's it going?
17:08Good.
17:09We might be starting without you.
17:12Dang it.
17:13I was wondering if you were.
17:14You guys are so fast.
17:15I thought that demo would take most of the day.
17:18No.
17:19All right.
17:19Well, I guess I'll catch up the second I can get up there.
17:23Okay.
17:23Sounds good.
17:24All right. Love you. Thank you.
17:25I love you.
17:26So we currently have our interior and exterior all stripped
17:30and pulled out.
17:31So right now it is light enough to lift it with the telehandler.
17:35We're adding extensions on the fork so it can pick up the entire thing without having it tip off,
17:41which is the exact opposite of what we want.
17:47So working with Sprout on this project for me, you know, we get to work on a lot of things
17:51together.
17:52And I've always really tried to encourage her to have some ownership of these builds.
17:57You know, I remember distinctly as a kid cutting plywood or ripping boards with my dad and being so terrified
18:03to mess it up.
18:04Just remembering like the encouragement of, well, so what if you messed it up? They'll make more.
18:10I hope I've given her the courage to just try.
18:19Okay. Feed it in slowly.
18:22This cabin is the biggest thing I've ever lifted with the telehandler.
18:26So I've got to be careful.
18:29I don't want to wreck the one thing that Cappy wants to save for his dad.
18:33Down just a little bit.
18:36There you go.
18:38I think she's good. I think we just need to strap it in.
18:45Strapped in and ready for takeoff.
18:48Just as the drizzle is turning the ground into a slip and slide.
18:51Straighten out.
18:54Okay, straighten out.
18:59Straighten your wheel.
19:04The good news is the storm is passing us by.
19:08The bad news.
19:10This cabin is heavy and it's awkward.
19:12And yep, I'm going backwards down a hill.
19:14You got it.
19:19All right, we're going to go over these blocks here in a second.
19:22Up.
19:23Yeah, that's good.
19:24We're halfway there.
19:26Only halfway.
19:28Oh, and Cappy's still not here.
19:30Looking good.
19:31All in a day's work.
19:32She's my hero.
19:35Hey, there's Cappy.
19:37All the fun stuff without me.
19:39Look who finally showed up.
19:41Oh, hey, Cappy.
19:42And right when we're about done too.
19:44Well, you can go back to doing what you were doing.
19:46We got this.
19:48Hi.
19:49Hi.
19:50Thanks for not waiting for me.
19:51Yep.
19:51I didn't want to drive any faster with that load.
19:55So these guys rocked this demo so fast.
19:58I thought it would take all day.
20:00They finished it in just over half a day.
20:02I'm super proud of her.
20:03She's doing really good.
20:06So the cabin is off its old site and successfully down the hill.
20:10Now all that's left is to bring it down safely.
20:14Slow is smooth.
20:15Smooth is fast.
20:16We'll put it down on blocks for now so we can remove some of the rotting wood before we attach
20:21it to the foundation.
20:23Okay, good?
20:24Yeah.
20:25Now it just shifted a foot.
20:27Yeah, we'll drive over.
20:28Just have her turn to the right and come forward.
20:30A little bit more to the right with your steering wheel?
20:32A little more.
20:34I'd go right there.
20:35This is so sensitive.
20:37So just real easy.
20:39Yup.
20:41Perfect.
20:43It happens to all of us.
20:46Good thing dad built this thing to last.
20:48You got this.
20:49Now shake it off.
20:51All right, just extend out.
20:54So she's over the foundation.
20:57She's concentrating so hard, watching the ground guy, making sure her controls are good.
21:01This is by far the biggest thing she's ever moved.
21:04I'm going to have you just come straight down.
21:07Ready?
21:08Everybody's clear.
21:11No more.
21:13No more.
21:15Yeah.
21:16Yeah!
21:17Great job, kiddo.
21:26That was stressful.
21:28What's next, kiddo?
21:29I think we call it, and then we will regroup in the morning.
21:33Snack time.
21:34Snack time.
21:35Isn't it just dinner at this point in the day?
21:37Yeah, I suppose.
21:55Everyone beat me here.
21:57The crew arrived early to get a head start on replacing that rotten wood at the bottom of the walls.
22:03Good morning, beautiful people.
22:05How are you feeling after the big move?
22:07I must say I slept really well.
22:10Slept like a rock.
22:15It's not just the locals that showed up to help the dads build.
22:18Our favorite master carpenter, David, drove down from Minnesota.
22:23What's up?
22:28How are you?
22:30How are you?
22:30Look at you.
22:31I know.
22:32David's an old friend, and we've done lots of builds together.
22:37Thank you for coming.
22:38Let's go have some fun.
22:39I like it.
22:40Okay.
22:41All right, I'll see you over there, kid.
22:45Sprout's manning the skid steer so we can get number 15 off of these blocks and set down on its
22:50forever foundation.
22:51All right, kid, get squared up with the middle of the building.
22:55So just real easy, start putting some straight-up pressure on it.
22:59Upsy-daisy.
23:00The building's moving.
23:02Come in here.
23:03The building's moving.
23:05He's nimble.
23:06He'll be fine.
23:09Okay, kid.
23:10Down real easy.
23:15Nice.
23:16The cabin's landed, and now it's time to turn it into something really special for Dad.
23:22While we attach it to the foundation, Sprout's carving out the space for the new French doors.
23:28I think it's good.
23:29All right, dude, this is your baby.
23:31You cut this whole thing out.
23:32We've got some choices.
23:34Okay.
23:34Okay?
23:35We've got, you know, gingerly push, rock it back and forth and pushing outside.
23:41Yeah.
23:41Okay, that's option one.
23:42Option two, Sparta kick.
23:45Just...
23:45Okay, that's two.
23:47Or go flying Sparta kick, superhero landing.
23:51I think option number two, Sparta kick.
23:54Awesome.
23:55One, two, three.
24:02You scared the crap out of me.
24:05We did it.
24:07Good job.
24:08Oh, wow.
24:09That's a lovely deal.
24:10Yeah.
24:11Dad will like this.
24:22Alex.
24:22Hello.
24:23Let me set these down.
24:25Oh, good.
24:25You brought tea.
24:26I brought tea.
24:27Fun stop for you.
24:28I invited Cappy's mom, Penny, over to give me more intel on our client, Cappy's dad, Larry.
24:34Well, come in.
24:35I grabbed us some blankets.
24:37Oh, we might need those.
24:38Yeah, it's a little chilly.
24:40So where is Larry?
24:41Is he unsuspecting of our intel meeting?
24:44He is unsuspecting.
24:45He's working on a puzzle.
24:46Okay, good.
24:46Started a new one.
24:47So we're good.
24:48I was hoping that maybe we could get some more stories about Larry and just learning more about him.
24:55One of the reasons that I think he loves short grass so much is because it reminds him of the
25:00prairie where he grew up.
25:02I found you some pictures.
25:03And this is where he and his sisters grew up.
25:07Wow.
25:07It's a house.
25:08And then there's some outbuildings and barns and one here that's really pretty cool.
25:14Okay, close your eyes.
25:15Okay.
25:16Okay.
25:18What?
25:19Is that just crazy?
25:21Oh, my gosh.
25:22I've never seen him with a mustache.
25:24How old was he when this picture was taken?
25:26He was probably 22.
25:30He's so handsome when he was that young.
25:32He was very handsome.
25:33Very handsome.
25:34Excellent taste, Penny.
25:36I did good.
25:37I did good.
25:43I'm headed home after a long day at the office.
25:48The cabin's coming along great.
25:50And yeah, I'm really proud of that.
25:54But what sticks with me more is how it brings us together as a family.
26:01It's a good job.
26:03At this stage in life, it's not just about what you're building.
26:06It's about who you're building it with and who you're building it for.
26:14What I want out of this project is I want my dad to have this place.
26:18You know, my mom said it the other day on the phone.
26:21He loves that view so much.
26:24And I never knew that.
26:25He never told me that.
26:27It really struck me.
26:28And part of it was, I think, pride that I was able to purchase this land.
26:39It looks crazy right here.
26:42Wow.
26:44That is amazing.
26:46And build what we've built with Rachel and Alex.
26:49But to have something that my dad is stoked about.
26:57I know my dad's proud of me.
27:02But what I get to do is...
27:05And then center your machine right there.
27:08Thanks, Kevin.
27:10You're right.
27:12You're gonna do one here?
27:14Okay.
27:15Perfect.
27:16I love you.
27:19What I get to do is model that for Sprout.
27:25That's what I get to do.
27:41We're getting closer to transforming my dad's old cabin into this beautiful rustic retreat.
27:48Today we're working on the new signature feature.
27:51The Appalachian style long shaded porch with a slanted roof.
27:55Oh my gosh.
27:56It looks amazing.
27:57It's getting there, brother.
27:58We're just starting to square it up though.
28:00It's a little bit blustery out here right now, but we're gonna conquer.
28:04Be careful on that slippery platform, please.
28:07I'm good.
28:08So these guys have the posts and the beams up.
28:11Right now we're putting the rafters on.
28:13So as soon as it stops raining, we can start putting some sheeting on top of this.
28:17And then it's roof paper and then we're ready for shingles.
28:19So that'll be nice to get our not waterproof roof waterproof.
28:35We got the porch roof finished just as the skies cleared.
28:38Perfect timing for Dustin and I to start on the deck.
28:41So now that we're ready to put up the deck framing, it starts with cutting a notch in this post.
28:46That'll accept our deck framing into it.
28:49So we'll do that by taking the saw and making a bunch of kerfs.
28:52Just a bunch of little, little cuts.
28:55This is something my dad taught me how to do.
29:03Now we're ready to take a chisel, clean all that out.
29:08And then we set our big deck beam into the notch.
29:12Oh, now like we measured it.
29:16While we finished the deck beams, Rodney has some of his guys measure, trim and weld the fence panels to
29:22the posts.
29:27Wow.
29:28It looks so good.
29:33Hello, kiddo.
29:35Looks great.
29:36What do you think?
29:37Wow.
29:39Question for you, madame.
29:40The sheetrockers specifically said that you wanted this wall to not be sheetrock.
29:47That is correct.
29:48Okay.
29:49Why is it not sheetrock?
29:51Because it will be stone.
29:53What's stone?
29:54The wall will be stone?
29:56Yeah.
29:58Cool.
29:59So it'll feel more like the inside of an Appalachian cabin, but it's super slick.
30:03I found it online.
30:04It's basically that it comes in sheets and we can just and it's on the wall.
30:09Ah, okay.
30:10It's a stone veneer.
30:11That makes sense.
30:12Right.
30:13Well, I will trust the process, bro.
30:16And then I have one more thing for you.
30:17I found this super interesting site that has basically, it's furniture, but they incorporate things from a farm.
30:25A farm that's in front of a tractor.
30:27Yeah, so they have tractor parts.
30:28They have stuff from like barns, like the old wood.
30:31Very cool.
30:32I'll ask if they can make something for us.
30:34That's cute, kid.
30:34He'll like that a lot.
30:35He moved off the farm when he was your age.
30:37Mm-hmm.
30:38I think he sort of always missed that.
30:42Hello, hello.
30:43Hi, Mama.
30:44What are you doing?
30:45Oh, my goodness.
30:45Are you that level of retirement, Mom?
30:47You're just walking around with an oil lamp in the middle of the day?
30:49What is this from?
30:51That was Grandma Cap's oil lamp.
30:53Wow.
30:54There you go.
30:56I just found it and went, hey, that'd be cool.
30:59That would be cool in here.
31:00Yeah.
31:00What else you got in your bag?
31:02Well, I have a treat for Alex.
31:04I'm giving it to her.
31:05I told you I was busy.
31:06Listen, Alex is busy.
31:07Alex is really busy.
31:08She's got things to do today.
31:10No, no, no, no.
31:12She needs cookies.
31:15Watch yourself.
31:15I told you they're for Alex.
31:17You know, we were looking for stuff the other day.
31:19Well, I found more stuff in the entrance.
31:21Really?
31:21I'm so excited.
31:22Yes.
31:22Yeah.
31:22Because we know we've never seen Laurie without his hat.
31:25Oh.
31:26But this is an actual clean one.
31:27Oh.
31:28There you go.
31:30All right.
31:31It'll be good for you.
31:32Well, this is the family brand.
31:34Yeah.
31:34Dad's family branded their cattle on the farm with those initials.
31:38Oh, okay.
31:38And that was actually Cap and Serby.
31:41Okay.
31:42Grandpa Cap married Cleo Serby.
31:44Mm.
31:45So there you go.
31:46That's super cool.
31:47Just stack them on top.
31:48And most importantly, I finally found one.
31:51Yay.
31:52You did not.
31:54I know.
31:54What are the odds?
31:56Is the actual key to 15?
31:59That is bananas that you found that.
32:01I was so excited.
32:02Dude, that is nuts.
32:04That is so cool, Mom.
32:06Yeah.
32:06All right.
32:07I'll walk you back to your truck, Mama.
32:08Okay.
32:08And I'll stay here and enjoy.
32:10You just keep working.
32:11Yes.
32:11Working hard.
32:12Don't eat all those cookies.
32:13Eat however many you want.
32:14Shh.
32:14I'm definitely eating all of the cookies.
32:31So I'm headed out to Shortgrass this morning.
32:35Yesterday, we gave 15 a facelift, wrapping it in brand new siding made from tough recycled
32:41materials.
32:42So this is a product that'll outlive me and probably outlive Sprout.
32:46And then Wren gave it a fresh coat of paint.
32:49Meanwhile, David and I took on the decking.
32:53Look at this view.
32:54That's pretty awesome.
32:56I picked up a slick new trick from the master himself about spacing out the screw holes.
33:02This is old bull, young bull stuff.
33:04So instead of measuring them, David drilled two holes in his speed square.
33:09So then every time when he sets it down, the holes line up and he just drills through the holes.
33:15That is genius.
33:16Together, we're kind of awesome, you know?
33:18Love it.
33:23I know Sprout spent most of the day yesterday painting the inside, so I'm excited to see
33:27the color on the wall.
33:29She also has a plan for stone siding on one of the walls.
33:32So I've used stone siding on the outside of the buildings, like the she shed we built
33:37for Kaylee, but never thought to put it on the inside.
33:39So I'm going to learn something new today, which is fun.
33:42Super excited that the weather is a gorgeous day today.
33:44Yeah, so today's going to be a big day.
33:47Oh, hey, kiddo.
33:49Hi.
33:49Look at this paint color.
33:51I know, right?
33:52It turned out really nicely.
33:53Awesome.
33:54So...
33:55Stone siding.
33:56Stone siding.
33:57Like, I love this color, but it's just pretty flat right now.
34:00Sure.
34:00And how the rocks are around here, it would be a really nice tie-in into the land here,
34:06but also it would just help add some depth and texture.
34:09Yeah, I'm excited to see it.
34:10I think it's cool.
34:10It's got that sort of cabin feel, but with a little modern twist.
34:13Yeah.
34:14I suppose I have to haul all these pieces in here, don't I?
34:16Yep.
34:18I'm starting to realize that the only reason I'm here this morning is to haul heavy things inside,
34:22so today I'm the queen's mule.
34:28Happy to do it.
34:34I'll just tack that up right here.
34:45I think now that we have our first layer, we can just check them, make sure that we're level, and
34:49then we can just stack up our layers.
34:52It's like a very not tasty cake.
34:56It's gonna look cool, kid.
34:57Yeah.
35:06Hey, guys!
35:08That's what I got.
35:09I know what you got.
35:11What is this?
35:12It's my furniture piece.
35:14Yeah, let's open it.
35:21Oh, my goodness.
35:22Oh, look how pretty it is.
35:24Yeah, it's a table.
35:25So what's the story behind this piece?
35:27Well, it's from that couple in upstate New York, who make furniture out of things from a farm.
35:32This table is made from an old 1946 tractor and 100-year-old silo wood.
35:381946?
35:39That was the year Dad was born.
35:41Nice, kid.
35:42He's gonna love this.
35:44I think it'll be a great table for all of his puzzles.
35:48Oh, yes, Larry and his puzzles.
35:49If we could move this over there so we can unpack it and then we're out of our workspace.
35:54Yep, I got it, man.
35:55Yes, please.
35:57I'm on it.
36:01While Sprout and I put the finishing touches on the inside, Ruby and Tanner are up top tackling the roof.
36:08We're using a composite shingle designed to look like classic slate, but tough enough to handle whatever wild weather South
36:15Dakota throws at us.
36:16Hey, can you believe, though, we did this whole roof and we didn't smash any fingers?
36:20Yet.
36:22We're so close.
36:23So close.
36:26I'm watching out for my own fingers as I get this heavy sheet steel orchard gate into position.
36:32It's been modified with a few special mementos.
36:35When I had it on the bench, I was thinking about Dad and I wanted to put in a couple
36:38things that just made me think of him.
36:40So I did a little sunshine on the top there and then this old insulator here from a farm.
36:46He told a story when he was a kid, the electrical service came through and he remembers getting power in
36:52the house.
36:52That was a really big deal.
36:54And this is just a farrier's rasp or a woodworking rasp and a rake because he grew up on a
36:59farm.
36:59I thought that was kind of fun.
37:00The next step is actually to weld the hinges to the gate itself and to the fence post.
37:15Well, let's test it.
37:17All right, ready?
37:19Oh, there we go.
37:24Easy access for Larry, but keep deer and Dustin out.
37:40With all the heavy lifting behind us, I have just enough time to decorate number 15 with some personal touches
37:46that'll mean a lot to Cappy's dad, Larry.
37:53This table looks really good.
37:55I'm really happy that we got the custom order in and it's the perfect spot to put some photos I
37:59got from Cappy's mom that Cappy and his dad have never seen.
38:03I think that Cappy and Larry will love all of the surprises I snuck in here.
38:11Hey, kiddo.
38:13Hi.
38:14Oh my gosh, that looks so nice, dude.
38:16Don't come too close.
38:17Stop there.
38:18It's supposed to be a surprise.
38:20What?
38:20For me?
38:21For Larry?
38:22For both of you.
38:23Well, cool.
38:23Well, I was going to come say hi and give you a hug, but I'm going to go get mom
38:25and dad.
38:26How about that?
38:26Okay.
38:27Okay.
38:31All aboard the Larry Surprise Express.
38:35You're going to have the urge to look up, but don't look up.
38:37You've got to promise not to look.
38:41How was that?
38:42And we're going to say peek-a-boo.
38:44So Alex has worked very hard.
38:46I went to see her and she told me I wasn't allowed to come in.
38:49Oh.
38:49So I have not seen the inside of this.
38:51Well, okay.
38:52So I get to be surprised with you and dad.
38:54She said she had some special things for Larry.
39:02Eyes still closed.
39:06Kid's coming down, too.
39:07Oh, she's coming.
39:07Oh, good.
39:10Hello.
39:10I'm just looking at the mirror.
39:11Oh, hello there.
39:13Now we're here because you've always said that you love this view.
39:16But the thing I really want to show you is behind us.
39:19Dad, I want you to think about the first time you saw this building.
39:22You were Sprout's age.
39:24It was a tool shed.
39:25And then in 85, you and mom bought the motel.
39:28And then you and I remodeled it.
39:30And then the last time you saw it was in 94.
39:33So, yeah.
39:34When you sold the motel.
39:36So, it looks a little different.
39:38Ready, kid?
39:39One.
39:40Two.
39:41Three.
39:43Oh, my God.
39:51That's sweet.
39:51That's beautiful.
39:52Is that a good sitting porch, Dad?
39:54It's beautiful.
39:56You moved it.
39:57We turned it.
39:58Perfect.
39:59So, we can see the view.
40:01The view.
40:02Oh, my God.
40:03And then what we wanted was to bring back the fruit trees that we had at the old motel.
40:07So, we decided to put this beautiful seven-foot-tall orchard fence around it to protect all the fruit trees.
40:13Oh, my gosh.
40:15What do you think?
40:16Beautiful.
40:17That's a long ways from a tool shed.
40:21Well, kid, do you want to show them the inside?
40:23Yes.
40:24I would like that.
40:25Okay.
40:30All right.
40:32So, I haven't seen this either.
40:33Come on in.
40:36Oh, jeez.
40:44Oh, my gosh.
40:49That's my other favorite picture.
40:51Oh, these are some of my favorite picture of all you boys.
40:54And a puzzle.
40:55Okay.
40:56The puzzle.
40:57As we can see, this was definitely a big undertaking.
41:01Yes.
41:01We originally stripped out the inside and we took out all the drywall and all the furniture, all the windows.
41:07And then we worked our way from the outside in.
41:09Oh, my gosh.
41:10These photos I pulled from the photo albums that you gave to me when we met.
41:14And then up here, I have some pictures of Larry in his Air Force days.
41:19Oh, my God.
41:20That's quite the mustache, Dad.
41:21Come here.
41:22Look at that.
41:22This picture was taken in England.
41:25Yeah.
41:26Wow.
41:26And it was in the military newspaper.
41:30Oh, my gosh.
41:32You're very handsome.
41:34What is this?
41:36So, there's a company that makes furniture out of old farm pieces and wood from barns.
41:43And I know how much you like these green tractors.
41:46Do you want to know what year?
41:481950?
41:49Nope.
41:49It's a 1946, eh?
41:51Oh, my gosh.
41:52Oh.
41:53Yes.
41:53The model of tractor that was the year of your birthday.
41:56Oh, my gosh.
41:57That's crazy.
41:58I wanted this space to be a time capsule for all of the stories that you've told me and
42:02you've told Kathy because they deserve to be showcased.
42:05Yeah.
42:06Well, you want to go sit in the rocking chair, Dad?
42:08Yep.
42:09There's a sunny one for you and a shady one for me.
42:11It's perfect.
42:12There you go.
42:12Okay.
42:14I think a lot of things in my life that I've done is hugely because of watching what my
42:19dad did and the man he taught me to be.
42:21Perfect.
42:23It's a multi-generational project.
42:25It started with my grandpa cap and then my dad and then me and now Sprout.
42:30Four generations have touched this building and this is its new home.
42:36Did you think 62 years ago when you saw this as a tool shed you'd be sitting here now?
42:42Not even in the wildest dreams.
42:45This view is perfect, son.
42:49I'm glad you like it, Dad.
