00:00We're looking to transform this backyard.
00:03This build's really about us spending time together.
00:06OK.
00:07I like the idea of a hot tub.
00:08What can we do to make it fun?
00:10Dude, the bottom of the drum.
00:13Oh, yeah.
00:15I guarantee it's the first time anybody in the world
00:17has done what you're doing.
00:19This is scary.
00:20What's on your face?
00:22Concrete.
00:25That'd be a dumb way to die.
00:26I don't want to be a pancake.
00:27Oh, my god, it looks amazing.
00:30One, two, three.
00:32Oh, my gosh.
00:34I'm making it happen today.
00:38My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:41But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:43This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:45Everyone clear?
00:46I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:50Woo-hoo!
00:51But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:54Whoa.
00:55It looks so good in here.
00:57We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:00Whoa!
01:02I'm awake now.
01:03What if we did use a plane?
01:04Wait, really?
01:05All right, Alex.
01:06It's all yours.
01:08Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:10Oh, my god.
01:11It's so amazing.
01:13And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:16I love you.
01:16Oh, my gosh.
01:17Look it, look it, look it.
01:18But the best part is we get to do it together.
01:36Summers don't last long in South Dakota.
01:39So when Sprout and I get a chance to hop on the bike, we take it.
01:46And it's the perfect way to visit our new clients.
01:49Paul and Tracy are the parents of Sprout's friend Sophia.
01:53And they also love motorcycles.
01:56Sophia's a year ahead of Sprout in school, so she's off to college soon.
02:00Which means Paul and Tracy are about to be empty nesters.
02:05I don't know what kind of build they've got in mind, but I do know this.
02:09I'm going to soak up every second I get with Sprout before it's her turn to fly the coop.
02:27Well, hello, sir.
02:30Man, that is a pretty bike.
02:33Shiny.
02:34Wow.
02:35Yeah, just getting her ready to go out for a ride with Tracy in a little while.
02:38Nice.
02:38Yeah.
02:38Our first ride today, too.
02:39Yeah.
02:40Awesome.
02:40I'm super excited to see what we have in store.
02:43Should we go back and take a look?
02:44Yes.
02:45That blue is awesome, dude.
02:49Tracy, they're here.
02:50Hey, Cap.
02:50Hey, Alex.
02:51Hello, Miss Tracy.
02:52This is the cutest backyard.
02:54How are you?
02:55Good.
02:55How are you?
02:55Good.
02:56Well, yeah, so Sophia graduated this year.
02:58Yes, she did.
03:00I got a year, so tell me what it feels like.
03:02It's a little tough.
03:03You're going to have all the emotions hit you at one time.
03:07We have two kids.
03:09Jacob is a junior in college, and Sophia just graduated from high school, and we are becoming
03:18empty nesters.
03:19And it's like, where have the last 20 years gone?
03:23You're almost there.
03:24Tell me a story.
03:25I don't know much other than what Sophia told Alex.
03:27Yeah, I was told that the backyard could use some love.
03:31We're looking to transform this backyard into a fun place to hang out with each other.
03:38This build's really about us spending time together.
03:42Although we love each other very much, the time isn't always there for that one-on-one time.
03:47So we're looking for some place to connect.
03:52We are West Coast originally, so something with water in it.
03:56You always had access to water.
03:58Anything for relaxation, definitely.
04:02So what was this fenced off area here?
04:05Is that an old garden?
04:06It is an old garden, but as we both got busier and busier with our kids, we kind of just
04:12let it go.
04:13I want a smaller space that I can manage myself.
04:18Sure.
04:18Okay, so now we got a little patio.
04:20That's a cute little patio.
04:21It'd be really nice to extend that hangout space to invite friends over.
04:27Yeah, I see you got custom slopage on your concrete there.
04:30It's buckled over the years.
04:32Not a super usable space.
04:36All right.
04:36Is there anything else that you're looking for?
04:38I just really would like to be surprised.
04:41Okay.
04:41I'm quite excited.
04:43Good.
04:44Cool.
04:44That's all I got for questions, kiddo.
04:46Yeah, if it's all right, I'd love it if we could stay for a little while and just see what
04:50we're working with.
04:51I know there's a shiny bike out there for you.
04:54You guys take as long as you like.
04:56Awesome.
04:56Space is all yours.
04:57We're out of here.
04:58Awesome.
04:59Bye.
05:00Have a good ride up the canyon.
05:02See you guys.
05:03See ya.
05:09A little shady spot.
05:10Yeah.
05:12Okay.
05:13We've got two empty nesters who want to reconnect and not a lot of space to work with.
05:18Mm-hmm.
05:19We know that they like the element of relaxation because they haven't really had a chance to allocate much time
05:26for that in the past, what, 20 years?
05:28Kids ruin everything, dude.
05:30Um.
05:30Hey.
05:32We also need a space that has something with water.
05:35If the goal is relaxation, I like the idea of a hot tub thinking about just end of the day
05:40relaxing.
05:40But what can we do that's interesting?
05:43What can we do to make it fun?
05:48What if we...
05:49Dude, the bottom of the drum of the beehive.
05:53Oh, yeah.
05:54That is so beautiful.
05:57A couple of years back, we turned an old concrete mixing drum into a beehive hangout for our friend Donovan
06:03and his family.
06:05Oh, my gosh.
06:06But we didn't use the bottom of the drum.
06:09It's eight foot in diameter.
06:11That's easily four people.
06:12I like that.
06:13So, thinking about the drum, we need a seat inside it, and then maybe something to, like, protect the rim.
06:20It would be nice to have a little bit of a shelf around the top.
06:22I think we could bring this concrete drum full circle.
06:25I know a guy who handcrafts really unique high-end concrete furniture.
06:30Let me make a call about that one.
06:31Okay.
06:32But supporting it, because this thing is going to weigh eight, ten thousand pounds, that's including the people, any concrete
06:39fixtures, and the water inside.
06:42Mm-hmm.
06:42So, to support it, I think we're going to need a pretty substantial column that will concrete in the ground
06:47for sure.
06:48What about the heat source?
06:49I can put fire under it.
06:51Wait, like actual fire?
06:53Yeah.
06:53Where would we get that from?
06:55Well, I know we can use natural gas.
06:56Right.
06:59I don't have a burner solution.
07:02Okay.
07:03Let me think about that.
07:05We're also going to need a custom deck for easy access to the tub.
07:08Okay.
07:09And then we also need to contain the garden ones.
07:15So, let's do a couple little raised beds or something.
07:17Yes.
07:18The plan is to build Paul and Tracy a one-of-a-kind backyard oasis with a standout centerpiece.
07:26To do this, we're transforming the base of our concrete drum into a truly original hot tub, complete with the
07:33unique concrete fixtures for a footrest, seating, and shelving.
07:37We'll mount the tub on a support column that will also house a customized burner.
07:42We'll surround it with a tailored deck and privacy wall and add low-maintenance garden boxes for Tracy.
07:49Finally, we'll redo and expand the crumbling concrete patio.
07:54Easier said than done though, pulling all this off in this tight backyard space is going to take some serious
08:00creativity and a whole lot of hustle.
08:02I love it.
08:04It'll be really exciting.
08:06Okay.
08:07We can't wait to get started.
08:09I'm dropping Sprout off at Granny Flats to work on some personal touches for Paul and Tracy.
08:15That's also where the concrete drum base ended up.
08:18So, I'll take that over to my master welding buddy Rodney's shop to start fabricating the parts we need.
08:24Ready for a name?
08:25Yep.
08:25I'm going to need a bigger ride for that job though.
08:36So, we've got the bottom portion of this concrete drum in the back of the truck.
08:40We actually took it away from Rodney's.
08:42What are the chances you still have the bottom of that concrete drum?
08:47Oh, now you want it?
08:48Oh my God.
08:49We didn't end up using it for that build.
08:51So, this morning we're bringing it back to Rodney's shop.
08:54It's sort of like a bad penny for him.
08:56Like, he keeps turning up.
09:04What?
09:06You can take that away from my place.
09:09I swear.
09:10Last time.
09:11Okay.
09:13I'll walk you through it.
09:14You guys see?
09:14Yeah.
09:15So, I've got a real plan this time.
09:17It's not in writing or anything, but I have a real plan.
09:19As long as I get it on paper or something.
09:22A napkin.
09:23How about a drawing?
09:23So, it's a hot tub.
09:25Okay.
09:25We'll have a central support column.
09:28Cool.
09:28But there will be a burner in here that heats this thing up.
09:33Ah.
09:34What I'd like you guys to fabricate is we're going to have a plate like this that the drum sits
09:41on, right?
09:42And we need some brackets made that's going to support a cast concrete edge.
09:48Sure.
09:48Like a lip.
09:49And then inside the drum, we're going to do another bracket.
09:54And there's going to be a seat.
09:56Okay.
09:57So, can we unload it?
10:01For the last time.
10:04I promise.
10:05Pinky promise.
10:06Last time.
10:06Last time.
10:06Okay.
10:07Thanks, dude.
10:15There you go.
10:16That's a good pick.
10:21All right.
10:21Fantastic.
10:22Awesome.
10:23Cool.
10:23Thank you guys.
10:23Appreciate it.
10:24Well, it's quite the project, ain't it?
10:26Yeah, it is.
10:27Rodney and his brother Austin jumped right to work removing the old concrete mixing blades
10:32and fabricating the brackets that will support the concrete fixtures.
10:42So, I'm on my way over to Paul and Tracy's place.
10:47Paul wanted to help get us started.
10:49So, him and a couple of buddies tore out the old concrete pad and hauled it away.
10:53I love it when clients want to jump in and get their hands dirty.
10:57And now we're going to drill a three-foot diameter hole five feet deep.
11:01And that's going to have the pipe centered in it.
11:03And that's what's going to support our new hot tub.
11:12So, kiddo, hold me on the fence there.
11:15Okay.
11:15So, we've got four-footed deck, give or take.
11:19Right.
11:20And we've got eight-footed tub, which brings us to the 12-foot spot.
11:24And then we've got another four-foot, and this is where the deck ends.
11:27Yep.
11:28I think it works.
11:29Okay.
11:30I'll mark our spot.
11:31You go jump in the skid steer.
11:33Okay.
11:33Cool.
11:49That thing's huge.
11:51So, if one can't tell by the look on my face, I'm a little stressed.
11:58Just because this is a bigger auger, it's three-foot in diameter, which is a lot bigger than the ones
12:04I've used in general.
12:07So, we're really trying to make sure that we do this right the first time.
12:11So, yeah, hopefully this goes well.
12:14Slow is smooth.
12:15Slow is fast.
12:23Okay, kid.
12:23So, we're going right for this blue stake.
12:25Center line, please.
12:28Okay.
12:28Go ahead and go right down for the tip of my stake.
12:31Boom.
12:32Okay.
12:33So, you've used that little one before, the 12-incher.
12:36This one takes way more power.
12:38So, the challenge with that is you need to throttle this guy almost all the way up, but that also
12:43makes your controls.
12:44Super touchy.
12:45Real touchy.
12:46Because you have more hydraulic fluid flowing through, so.
12:49Okay.
12:49All right.
12:50Good?
12:51Okay.
12:52Okay.
12:52I don't know.
12:53Let's drill a hole, kid.
12:59This is a much bigger auger than Alex is used to working on.
13:02Yep.
13:03Yep.
13:03This folds in.
13:04So, I'm glad she's nervous.
13:09There you go.
13:10Now, all she has to do is prove to herself that she's got this.
13:15There you go.
13:21Yeah.
13:22I'm gonna have you try to pull some out.
13:26Look at that.
13:27Chocolate cake.
13:28Ooh.
13:29It's so satisfying.
13:31Love it.
13:32All right, kiddo.
13:38I'm headed to my buddy Kent's place because he said he has a pipe that might work for the
13:43big hot tub support car.
13:45We're gonna take it back to the shop and start fabricating it to accept the burner that's gonna
13:50be a heat source for this hot tub.
13:56I never miss an opportunity to poke around a boneyard.
13:59There's some kinds of stuff back here.
14:01He's holding out on me.
14:03Look at all this stuff.
14:04I spend all day here.
14:06Shaker screens and all kinds of stuff.
14:09Hi, rabbit.
14:11Sorry.
14:11Just looking for treasures.
14:15Okie dokie.
14:20Good news, bad news.
14:21Good news.
14:22We're 20 inches across, which is great.
14:25Bad news is we're just over 14 feet.
14:28Now we only need about six feet for the build, but I need to get it back to my shop
14:33to cut
14:33it to size.
14:34Problem is I can't haul this length of pipe and the skid steer at the same time on the trailer.
14:42Hmm.
14:45All right, I know what I'm gonna do.
14:50While Cappy's picking up pipes, I'm on the way to go pick up our client's daughter, Sophia.
14:56We know how much Paul and Tracy love taking motorcycle trips together.
15:00And Sophia has an Uncle Kevin who we've looped in because he has a motorcycle shop.
15:05And I'm hoping that we can find a part that we can transform into a handle that'll turn on the
15:10burner for the hot tub.
15:11I think that'd be really cool.
15:17Hello.
15:18Hi.
15:26Yee-haw!
15:30Rodney's shop is a lot closer to here than my shop.
15:35So, I'm just gonna take this to Rodney's shop.
15:39But he doesn't know I'm coming.
15:42Surprise!
15:56I'm so glad we can do this project for your mom and dad.
15:59I feel like they should have something special because, like, my mom's heart stuff.
16:05Oh, yeah.
16:06She had a hole in her heart, right?
16:08Yeah.
16:09It sounds like that it helped kind of bring everyone together and realize that, like, it's better to spend time
16:15when we have it, right?
16:17Yeah.
16:17Which is probably a good thing as well.
16:20Yeah.
16:20Yeah.
16:26Hey, girls.
16:27What's going on?
16:28Hi, Kevin.
16:29I was wondering if we could possibly root around here a little bit because we're looking for a part that
16:34we can use for a handle.
16:36Oh, I think we got some for you guys around here.
16:38Okay.
16:38Awesome.
16:39Help yourselves.
16:41We could start over here.
16:43Something like this might be fun.
16:44Maybe this could, like, turn something on.
16:47Oh, yeah.
16:48We could use that.
16:49Yeah, I'll make a pile over here.
16:51Okay.
16:52We can look over here.
16:54I think these were my dad's old handlebars.
16:56Cool.
16:56So that's, like, something that he actually had.
16:59This is definitely in the pile.
17:01There's this.
17:03That's crazy.
17:07This must be in the pile.
17:12I'm not too far from Rodney's shop with this pipe, but instead of driving all the way around the front,
17:17taking a little shortcut, pioneer cross-country sort of thing going on.
17:23It'll be fine.
17:33I've just got to squeeze past these unused parts of my old builds.
17:48Hi, buddy.
17:49Oh, man.
17:52What are you doing breaking this?
18:03I brought you some pipe.
18:04Here I am trying to get rid of something, and then you bring something else.
18:07I promise this won't stay for long.
18:09This is the support for the hot tub.
18:12Okay.
18:12This is my stem.
18:13But this we need to cut off about six feet.
18:17Okay.
18:17And then we need to cut out these holes.
18:20So inside this pipe is the burner.
18:23I need to put three or four of these all the way around it so air can get in as
18:27this burner does its job.
18:29Sure.
18:29Awesome.
18:30Well, I'll just stash it out of the way for the moment.
18:31For some reason, I know this won't be the last time you drop something off.
18:34This is for you, Rodney.
18:38Thanks, buddy.
18:39You know, sometimes it helps if you have two people that do that.
18:41Oh, see, that's good.
18:42Oh, man.
18:45Okay.
18:46I'm done.
18:47Thanks, dude.
18:47We'll get to work.
19:00So I'm on my way over to Granny Flats to meet my buddy, Brandon.
19:04He makes concrete furniture, beautiful pieces of art.
19:08His work is durable and treated to be completely waterproof.
19:12He is a concrete aficionado.
19:16He just drove up from Kansas to help with this build.
19:19And today we're going to form up these three concrete rings that'll be the footrest, the seat, and the rim
19:25for the hot tub.
19:26I'm really excited to see him.
19:29What's up, handsome?
19:31What's up?
19:31How's it going, brother?
19:33Dude, it's good to see you.
19:34Oh, man.
19:35Thank you so much for making the trip.
19:37Yeah, man.
19:37I'm so excited about this.
19:38I love the elegance of, like, your furniture and the stuff you do with sort of this, like, big, chunky,
19:44industrial metal tub.
19:46I guarantee it's the first time anybody in the world has done what you're doing.
19:49So I'm happy to be a part of it.
19:51Yeah, I love it.
19:52For this hot tub project, we wanted to do something really elegant.
19:56So we came up with these one-inch thick concrete seating elements.
20:00So right now he's putting together these giant tables using three-quarter-inch plywood and leveled perfectly.
20:08You ready?
20:08Yep.
20:08The reason we do that is this stuff is all self-leveling, and then you don't want it to slope
20:14to one side or the other, because that'll make your pour off.
20:16Looks good.
20:16And then the forms themselves get set on those tables.
20:20Fragile little things.
20:21Uh-huh.
20:22Tape them down, silicone in place, let the silicone cure for at least six hours, so tomorrow we'll actually pour
20:28the pieces of concrete in the room.
20:34Hey, kiddo.
20:36Hello.
20:37Hi.
20:38What do you got?
20:39I have motorcycle parts from Uncle Kevin's shop.
20:44First, some handlebars off of Paul's old bike.
20:47Oh, that's fun.
20:49I like that.
20:49Disc brakes.
20:50A random red spring.
20:51That looked cool.
20:52Dude, fun.
20:53Yeah.
20:53A bike chain.
20:54I like that.
20:57Oh, I know what it is.
20:59You put your helmet on it.
21:00Dude, fun.
21:00And then I talked with Sophia a little bit, learned about Tracy and how she had some heart issues and
21:07had heart surgery.
21:08She has a tattoo across the top of her chest that's a heart with wings out of it to hide
21:14the scars.
21:15Wow.
21:16Yeah.
21:16I was thinking that I could connect with Aunt Wren and maybe we can think about some ideas for some
21:22sort of art piece that we can do to help honor that for her, because I think that's pretty important.
21:28Wow.
21:28Yeah.
21:29Good idea, kid.
21:30All right, well, let's get some supper and we'll get at it tomorrow.
21:32Yeah.
21:32Nice.
21:45Rodney and I used his fancy robot arm torch to cut out the air holes in the hot tub support
21:51pipe.
21:54Now I want one of these.
21:57Then he welded the base plate for the hot tub on top of the pipe.
22:03Now we're cutting the pipe to the right length.
22:08And I'll hustle it over to Paul and Tracy's house for a big day on this build.
22:12Thanks, brother.
22:13Appreciate it.
22:14Talk to you soon.
22:15See ya.
22:17It's concrete pour day.
22:19We're using concrete to set the pipe into the whole sprout duck.
22:23And we're also going to pour the new patio.
22:26Paul and Tracy have agreed to stay at a friend's house so they stay out of our way and then
22:30we can actually surprise them.
22:32That means we have to work a little quicker so we can get them back home.
22:38Today's going to be an awesome day.
22:39Of course, my concrete guys are never late.
22:42So we're going to get the mini off.
22:43We have to pick up the giant pipe in the back of the truck, rig it up with straps and
22:47set it in the hole.
22:48So making it happen.
22:56So a big challenge today is just getting everything done in time.
23:00We never want to make these concrete guys wait.
23:03These guys show up, especially with this giant pump.
23:07We want to be real respectful of what we're doing in the time that we said we'd be ready.
23:14So it's sort of all hands on deck to get this piece done.
23:17What are we doing?
23:18I think we're pretty good.
23:19Let's suck it in a little bit, Cap.
23:22Down.
23:24We're centered in the hole.
23:25I think it looks good.
23:26All right.
23:27Toodaloo.
23:28Toodaloo.
23:29Thanks for coming.
23:33Now it's time to pour.
23:34And who amongst us will handle the pump truck's massive boom?
23:39All right, kid, we ready?
23:40I think so.
23:41That's what I'm talking about.
23:42I told you Alex never shrinks from a challenge.
23:45And I'm proud of her because she volunteered to wrestle with 10 tons of concrete.
23:50Here it comes.
23:56Probably need to be on this side of it, Sprout.
23:58It's a little bit of a rodeo, huh?
23:59Uh-huh.
24:00This is a lot more exciting than I would have imagined.
24:04This is scary.
24:06Do you remember what you told me the first time we poured concrete?
24:08That this is not on the list of dream jobs.
24:11Still isn't.
24:12I'm a bit winded because there is no way to stop it once it's coming.
24:17It's on your face.
24:18Concrete.
24:20So as one can see, I learned that lesson the hard way.
24:27The patio is done.
24:29And while the guys smooth it out, I'm going to pour the concrete for our hot tub base.
24:35So we're pumping a little bit of concrete inside the tube and a little outside the tube
24:39because I want it to be equal pressure.
24:41I don't want to fill up the middle and have it wander.
24:43So as I'm going, I'm checking level.
24:46We have to make this perfect because the hot tub itself sits on top of this.
24:50And full of water, it's going to weigh about 10,000 pounds.
24:53Oh, that's looking nice.
25:06Today, we're pouring the elegant concrete rings that'll be the foot rest, the seat, and the
25:12rim of our hot tub.
25:13Ready?
25:13Yeah.
25:15There we go.
25:15I'm really excited.
25:16This whole thing is all new for me.
25:18We're mixing up a special kind of concrete because these pieces are only one inch thick,
25:23but they need to be tough enough to last under water.
25:26And Brandon just told me we need 50 pounds of ice.
25:29It turns out adding icy water to the concrete slows down the curing process, which gives it
25:35a smoother texture.
25:39So we're going to load 10 of these bags dry, and then we have to weigh out the water.
25:44The reason we do weight is it's precise.
25:46So like a conventional concrete is more like cooking, and yours is like baking.
25:52Yeah.
25:53This is going to age gracefully.
25:54It's going to live forever.
26:04There we go.
26:09Cool.
26:13All right.
26:14You want to kill it?
26:14Kill it.
26:17Woo.
26:18That looks a lot like cake batter.
26:20So I'm going to pour in one spot.
26:22Okay.
26:23I'm just going to let it flow out.
26:24Okay.
26:24I'm just going to let it flow out.
26:24That is awesome.
26:30I can see why in the beginning we worked so hard to make these tables so level.
26:35It's because four pieces come together to make one big ring.
26:39So when they meet up with each other, then they're perfect.
26:54They're perfect.
26:56They're perfect.
26:57They're perfect.
26:58Cappy built the wall that'll go behind the hot tub to give Tracy and Paul some privacy
27:03from their neighbors.
27:04Now, Aunt Ren and I are going to decorate it with a mural that has a special meaning for
27:08the family.
27:10Normally, the gaps in the slatted design would make painting on it difficult.
27:14So I'm thinking outside the box.
27:16Hello.
27:17What are you wearing?
27:19I'm wearing our solution to our issue of trying to superimpose an image on here.
27:24Really?
27:25Mm-hmm.
27:26So I can take like an image and I can download it into the program and I can superimpose it
27:31here.
27:31All right.
27:32Let's get started then.
27:33So I'm currently superimposing a picture of Tracy's tattoo that she got after her heart
27:40surgery.
27:41From talking with Sophia, it really brought their family together.
27:44So we thought it would be really nice if we put her tattoo on the boards to remind
27:50her that she's made it through and she is so strong for it.
27:57I mean, it looks good.
28:08Rodney just finished adding the brackets to the concrete drum.
28:11Let's get it out of here so you never see this again.
28:14Yeah.
28:15Right there.
28:16And now Ruby and Oh My are taking it out for a multi-step makeover.
28:21I got the tank right there on the trailer.
28:23My co-pilot, he's not helping me do much of anything.
28:27First step, sandblasting.
28:29This deep clean will strip off all the old paint and grime.
28:34Next step, powder coating at my buddy Brian's shop.
28:38This is a finely ground powder that is baked onto the drum to protect it from South Dakota's
28:44toughest weather.
28:44Once the powder is applied, it is off to the oven where the high heat bonds the coating
28:50to the drum.
28:51When it cools, I get a call for pickup.
28:54Oh my God, it looks amazing.
28:58This is perfect.
28:59From gritty old concrete drum to custom hot tub centerpiece, the transformation is complete.
29:07Time to move this hot tub into its new home.
29:12So we're going to fly it into the backyard.
29:15The challenge is today, it's only Dustin and I.
29:19Ruby's out of town and Sprout's finding the garden boxes for Tracy.
29:23So we only have two of us to do a job that should probably take four.
29:28Wish me luck.
29:32What do you think?
29:33Wow, this looks great.
29:35Rodney did a nice job.
29:37Okay, so I have a plan.
29:38We're going to use the Mini to carry the tub into the backyard.
29:42But I want to test it first.
29:44I just want to pick it up off this cradle just a little bit to see where we're at on
29:47tipping weight.
29:48Gotcha.
29:48Okay.
29:49So I know the Mini will handle the weight of the drum.
29:53The challenge is in order to accommodate the size of the tub, the boom of the Mini needs to extend
29:58pretty far.
29:59Sort of think about holding a bowling ball right here versus holding a bowling ball arm's length.
30:04It's a little tougher to do.
30:06We're just going to pick it up real slow.
30:07We don't want the machine to tip and then we'll track it into the backyard.
30:10We got this.
30:11We got this.
30:17How does it feel?
30:19I like that as long as we don't swing.
30:27Am I clear?
30:28Yep.
30:29Okay, I'm coming down.
30:38I'm going to set her down.
30:44Now we need to access the bottom of the tub to bolt on the mounting plate that'll connect it into
30:49the support pipe.
30:50I'm using the Mini to tilt the tub so we're not working under 2,000 pounds of steel.
30:56That'd be a dumb way to die, getting crushed by a concrete mixer hot tub.
31:01Yeah, I don't want to be a pancake.
31:02This dusting cake.
31:03Okay, perfect.
31:12I like that.
31:15The next part is we have to bolt the first plate to the bottom of this.
31:20Rodney left this plate on top of the base.
31:22And then this plate then gets bolted to the second plate, which is welded to the base.
31:26Well, let's look at the plates.
31:29So if this, uh, wait.
31:38I messed up.
31:40So, uh, one thing I forgot to tell Rodney.
31:44I need a hole in the mounting plates so the flame hits the tub.
31:50Oh.
32:01Hola, amigo.
32:02Hello.
32:04You betcha.
32:06Well.
32:06You built exactly what I asked.
32:08I just forgot to ask for a hole.
32:10It happens.
32:11Yes.
32:11Well, I appreciate that.
32:13So Rodney to the rescue yet again.
32:15That's the kind of guy he is.
32:17He came over with his mobile rig.
32:25He's got a hundred feet of hose.
32:26And he's going to cut out this piece for us.
32:32Boom.
32:34Now we'll cut the plate that mounts on the tub.
32:41He just spart a kickin' out of the hole.
32:44Thank you, brother.
32:45Appreciate it, dude.
32:45Yeah, we'll see you.
32:49Get that last one.
32:53Okay.
32:54Awesome.
32:55All right.
32:56So we got the mounting plate on.
32:58All right.
32:59Tracking towards you.
33:07Stop.
33:08Okay.
33:09Really slow.
33:11Okay.
33:16It's in.
33:18It's in.
33:18Dude, put some bolts in it.
33:19Quick.
33:22Dude.
33:23Nice.
33:24All right.
33:25Concrete tops are next.
33:27Sweet.
33:29It's warm.
33:30It's warm.
33:30On the scale of one to Hot Pockets.
33:33How are we?
33:33Oh, you can handle it.
33:35Oh, you can handle it.
33:35Okay.
33:36The first one that goes in is our big donut.
33:38And that's the floor of the hot tub.
33:40We'll tip it down.
33:43You just want to be really careful with it.
33:47There.
33:48All right.
33:48Concrete donut.
33:50Concrete donut.
33:50So what's next is the bench pieces.
33:53Four of them that'll go in.
33:54We'll dry fit those to make sure they look great.
33:57There we go.
33:59Lastly, we'll dry fit the lip around the top of the tub.
34:04Got it.
34:05Yep.
34:05Okay.
34:06Awesome.
34:07Nice.
34:08Nice.
34:10So the next step is to get everything perfectly level.
34:13And we'll do that with shim and silicone.
34:15And then the weight of these pieces on the silicone cures,
34:18that's what holds these things down.
34:20Awesome.
34:31So back at Granny Flats today,
34:33working on this burner plan for the hot tub.
34:36We went to a commercial kitchen supply store and got this giant burner.
34:41So this is 160,000 BTUs.
34:45BTU stands for British Thermal Unit.
34:48It's a common way that we measure heat.
34:50So for reference, the kitchen burner that you have at home is 7,000 BTUs.
34:56So this burner is 20 plus times bigger.
35:00That's more than enough to heat up our hot tub.
35:04So the part I want to work on right now is how we actually turn the gas valve.
35:09So the girls went over to Uncle Kevin's shop and came up with some motorcycle parts that I think we'll
35:14be able to use on this.
35:16And the million dollar question is, which piece is it going to be?
35:19We've got this as an option.
35:21Vinny, what do you think?
35:24The handlebars.
35:26Handlebars.
35:27We could, you know, maybe cut this off here and use this as a, like a throttle.
35:32Like...
35:33I think we'll do that.
35:44Now that the hot tub's landed, the next mission is to make it part of a backyard paradise.
35:49That's both functional and easy on the eyes.
35:53Step one is crafting a custom deck that hugs the tub's curves.
35:57We've got all this blocking in here that we have to do because we're going to curve this decking around
36:04the tub.
36:06Then we need to bring the heat.
36:08So we've made this custom throttle that'll stick down through the deck onto the valve.
36:14And this is how you'll actuate the burner and light it.
36:18Let's see if this thing lights up.
36:21The gas line has been run.
36:23It's under the ground.
36:24And it's in our sprinkler box.
36:26I have to get this shaft all the way down through this decking, through the lid of that box, and
36:33to touch the top of the valve.
36:36Okay.
36:37Here goes.
36:41So that's wide open.
36:44We have ignition.
36:49Now, we finish installing the railing.
36:59It's 95 today, so I'm hiding under this deck in the shade.
37:03And after a quick wardrobe change, because my shirt looks like I took a dip in the tub, Scotty and
37:08I put up the privacy fence with a special touch for Tracy.
37:12So I'm excited to see what she thinks when she sees it for the first time.
37:16Dude.
37:16Awesome.
37:26Sprout and I are up bright and early, putting the final touches on Paul and Tracy's Hot Tub Haven.
37:34We're hoping it'll provide the perfect spark to kick off the next chapter of their adventures together.
37:41I like your lights, kiddo.
37:42I know, right?
37:43It looks super sharp.
37:44I love, love, love that.
37:47Same here.
37:47Obviously, she'll recognize it, but I'm interested to see how she'll react.
37:51React to it?
37:52You go get them?
37:53Yeah.
37:53Okay, cool.
37:54Okay.
38:00So wait here, and once we hit three, then it's ready.
38:06Okay, quick, quick, quick, quick.
38:07Yes.
38:08Okay, quick.
38:08You're right here.
38:10Okay.
38:11All right.
38:12What are we doing?
38:12We're counting to three.
38:14One, two, three!
38:18Oh, my gosh.
38:20Oh, wow.
38:34Hey, you two.
38:36Hi.
38:40There's no words.
38:46Kill me, brother.
38:50Oh, this is awesome.
38:51This was her.
38:53That's amazing, kid.
38:57Yeah.
38:58It's like in a restaurant when the food comes out and it gets real quiet.
39:01Yeah.
39:02It's always a good sign.
39:03It is.
39:04What do you think?
39:04Wow.
39:06It's so amazing.
39:08And you even have a concrete patio without a crack in it.
39:12That's amazing.
39:13Yes.
39:14Well, we took what you guys had said and thought a lot about the empty nester piece of it, because
39:20it's a natural part of you raise your children to be capable, fully formed adult humans, and they're leaving now.
39:26And then this idea that you guys get to relearn you.
39:31Yeah.
39:31Right?
39:32You know, the next chapter.
39:34Also, you guys talked about entertaining.
39:36So we actually expanded the patio three feet farther this way and a couple feet out this way so friends
39:42can come and hang out.
39:44That's awesome.
39:44Yeah.
39:45And then we took your vegetable garden.
39:48We cleaned that up.
39:49And then we brought in some of these boxes for you.
39:51So easier to work on.
39:53You don't have to crawl around.
39:54Oh my gosh.
39:55It's amazing.
39:56But yeah, so we ultimately decided we wanted to tie the patio into this hot tub space for you guys.
40:01Just a little place you could come at the end of the day and relax.
40:03Very cool.
40:04And then the privacy screen was Sprout's idea.
40:08Mm-hmm.
40:09Yes.
40:09Sophia and I sourced some parts from your old bike.
40:12And on the way out there, she was explaining the story of your heart.
40:17And I worked with my Aunt Wren to have it on the back wall.
40:20I can't believe you did that.
40:22The mural that Alex painted for me, I don't know if I'll ever be able to say in words how
40:30much it means to me.
40:32The surgery made us more aware our time could be short with each other.
40:38And Tracy is our heart, so it's extra special.
40:44It's pretty cool.
40:46That is so cool.
40:47The top rim on the tub, we did custom-made cast concrete.
40:51Very cool.
40:52So there's a cast bench inside and a little place for your feet.
40:55That is so cool.
40:57Oh, I'm so excited.
40:58Guaranteed no one else has one of these.
40:59No.
41:00Mm-hmm.
41:00One off.
41:01Absolutely.
41:02It was a lot of welding.
41:04A lot of fabric.
41:05Oh, yeah.
41:06Wow.
41:07This is amazing.
41:08Look at it.
41:09Holy smokes.
41:11They obviously know us quite well with our modern clean lines, the darker, deep colors.
41:18Just a space where it's very comfortable.
41:22We can come and sit, relax.
41:23To heat this, you tapped onto the side of your house and brought a gas line under with a commercial
41:28burner off of a kitchen stove.
41:30There's a grip off my old handlebars.
41:32There you spotted it.
41:35So this turns.
41:38Turns the gas on and off.
41:40Oh.
41:40Oh, my.
41:40And then that's how you light it.
41:44Shut up.
41:44So from the tub, if it's getting a little cold, open her up.
41:48If it's getting a little hot, run her down.
41:50Seriously?
41:51Mm-hmm.
41:51I love it.
41:52It's amazing.
41:53Couldn't have asked for anything cooler.
41:56I love it.
41:59Thanks, brother.
42:01Well done.
42:03Thank you, darling.
42:06Okay.
42:06All right, kid.
42:07This is going to be a great space for us and some quality time, and I think we should go
42:13enjoy it now.
42:14Let's do it.
42:16Okay.
42:16Let's go.
42:18I know.
42:19Look at these nice chairs.
42:22Oh, yeah.
42:23Yeah, I could do this.
42:25This is nice.
42:27For sure.
42:29What is this thing?
42:30This is a robot arm that allows you to cut out custom stuff, and here I've got a sign for
42:36Cappy.
42:37You know, he likes to store everything here.
42:39He left his shipping containers.
42:41From the swimming pool, the grain bin project, the beehive material.
42:46Got a little growing collection back here I should probably come take care of.
42:49Cappy's storage fee, $1 per foot.
42:53That's funny.
42:54You can do the entire thing.
42:54Bye.
42:54You can do.
42:54And you can do it.
42:55I can do it.
