00:00Hi!
00:01What a gorgeous place!
00:03We want something that feels vacation.
00:05Why don't we just use a boat?
00:09This is awesome!
00:10It's definitely larger than the pictures.
00:14That is impressive.
00:16This boat weighs close to 13,000 pounds.
00:19I'm a little nervous.
00:21We got a bunch of wannabe pirates that never even been on a boat.
00:23I want to unwrap the steering wheel.
00:25And no instructions.
00:26All right, here we go!
00:28Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
00:30It's tipping!
00:30Don't let it fall!
00:32The starboard side needs scrubbing.
00:34Walk the plank, Captain.
00:37One, two, three.
00:39How'd you do that?
00:41No way!
00:41That's amazing.
00:46My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:49But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:51This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:53Everyone clear?
00:54I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:58Woo-hoo!
00:59But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
01:02Whoa!
01:03It looks so good in here.
01:05We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:08Whoa!
01:10I'm awake now!
01:11What if we did use a plane?
01:12Wait, really?
01:13All right, Alex, she's all yours.
01:16Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:18Oh, my God.
01:19It's so amazing.
01:21And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:23Love you.
01:24I love you.
01:24Oh, my God.
01:25Look at this, look at it.
01:26But the best part...
01:30Is we get to do it together.
01:46It's so vast out here.
01:48It's pretty.
01:49It looks like the ocean, like the waves.
01:53I do like how the wind moves the grass like that.
01:55It's cool.
01:55Mm-hmm.
01:56You're good on GPS?
01:57You know where we're going?
01:58Yep.
01:59So I got the coordinates from that couple that called Joe and Mandy.
02:02They own all this land, but live elsewhere on the property.
02:06We're going to a different spot.
02:07They said it was pretty open.
02:10It's open.
02:11It's just...
02:12It's a little bit in the middle of nowhere.
02:14All I know is they love being outdoors with family and friends.
02:18And they're interested in some kind of off-grid getaway spot.
02:21Cool.
02:23God, this is big.
02:24I thought our place was big.
02:25This is big.
02:27We're almost there.
02:29All right, I'm going to need that hat back.
02:31Well, I have mine.
02:35Oh, you want me to wear yours?
02:37Yeah.
02:41You look very pretty.
02:43I feel very pretty.
02:48Actually, Cap, I think I want mine back.
02:50I don't want it to get all sweat-stainy.
02:52That seems fair.
02:56Hi.
02:56What a gorgeous place.
02:58I know.
02:59Thank goodness.
03:00Nice to meet you.
03:01Awesome.
03:02This is incredible.
03:03This is our favorite place on the property.
03:06I can see why.
03:07Yes.
03:09We, in general, have always been outdoorsy, whether we're mountain biking, boating, camping with our kids.
03:17Outside is where we get our zen.
03:19Outdoors is huge for me.
03:20I lived up in Alaska.
03:21It's very much what I love.
03:24What brought you to South Dakota?
03:25A good friend of mine.
03:26Her family has a ranch.
03:28We came up to help on the ranch, and I instantly fell in love.
03:33It had all the open space that I love so much.
03:36And her family is amazing.
03:38Her dad, Dale, he was just a very loving and embracing family man.
03:44He did pass away.
03:45But he was the inspiration for getting us here.
03:49Oh, that's cool.
03:50Mm-hmm.
03:50Yeah.
03:51Very, very special at South Dakota.
03:52So, friends drew us here, and then how can you not love this place?
03:56Yeah, absolutely.
03:57Right?
03:57So, tell us what we can do for you.
03:59We want something that feels vacation.
04:02Okay.
04:02Something unique, of course, because we called you.
04:05What does, like, a vacation look like for y'all?
04:08With friends, we probably had more fun lamping, like, when we had a houseboat.
04:14Tell me about that.
04:15How fun.
04:16Had it for 13 years, and we enjoyed the heck out of it.
04:20Oh, fun.
04:21Yeah.
04:23This place is full of views and big sky, and that's what we would like to share with
04:30friends.
04:31Joe loves the water.
04:32I loved getting together with friends, having that open space, the stars, all of that.
04:38But it's now a time where we like to be close to home.
04:42So, it's mainly a space for you and friends to have family, to unplug and not have to worry
04:47about anything else.
04:48Correct.
04:48Okay.
04:49Something close by, but feel like we're a million miles away.
04:54Okay.
04:54Yeah.
04:55That's it.
04:56All right.
04:56Well, I'm good if you don't have any questions.
04:58Yeah.
04:58I'm good.
04:59You mind if we poke around for a little bit?
05:00No.
05:01No.
05:01Yeah.
05:02Feel free.
05:02We're going to dip this one in sunscreen, and then we'll...
05:05All right.
05:07Nice to meet you.
05:08It's nice to meet you.
05:09Awesome.
05:10We'll talk to you real soon.
05:11Thanks, guys.
05:21So, we got big fans of adventure.
05:23Yes.
05:24Being outside, being in nature.
05:26Mm-hmm.
05:26I think it's cool they lived on a houseboat.
05:28That sounds super fun.
05:29I suppose my question is, do we want to match the prairie, or do we want to match their love
05:33for the water?
05:34I don't know.
05:35Like, well, so what are the options?
05:36So, we could do a sod house.
05:39Or a log cabin.
05:40Could do a grain bin.
05:42That would be cool, but could we try to push the envelope a little bit and do, like,
05:47the total opposite?
05:50Because they love the water.
05:52So, what if we did something that kind of took this very flat land and totally snapped
05:57it?
05:58Okay.
05:58So, then how about we do a lighthouse?
06:01Yeah.
06:01Oh, for real?
06:02Yeah.
06:02I was just making that up.
06:03That would look so funny out here.
06:06What would we make it out of?
06:07I don't know.
06:08Because we could frame it.
06:09We couldn't make it out of, like, brick or anything.
06:11That's ridiculous.
06:12What about we could do, like...
06:14Oh, wait.
06:14Why don't we just use a boat?
06:19Do we should totally use a boat?
06:20And we were talking about how out here it looks like waves.
06:25Good point.
06:25The grass was looking like waves.
06:27I mean, we put an RV in a tree, so why not a boat in a field?
06:31You used to have a friend with a sailboat, right?
06:34Yeah, yeah.
06:35Often, when I would go out on the sailboat, we had a slip that we'd park the boat in at
06:41the marina.
06:41So, I wonder if we could model it off of the slip.
06:45Oh, like put a boat with a deck around it?
06:47Yeah.
06:49Oh, that'd be so cool.
06:50Because then you got your sitting, hanging out spot out of the grass.
06:52Mm-hmm.
06:53They would freak.
06:54I wonder if we could do a sailboat or something that would have a cabin inside for them and
06:59their friends to sleep.
07:01So, something like this?
07:03Yeah.
07:05Sailboats have a keel.
07:06How would you do that?
07:08I mean, we could either build up or go down.
07:10Or like dig a hole?
07:11Mm-hmm.
07:11Because then it would look like it was parked at the slip, and then the water disappeared.
07:16Mm-hmm.
07:17I don't know if we would want to do.
07:19This is awesome.
07:21Dude, I love this so much.
07:23You're going to come over this hill, this grass-flowing happiness, and there's going
07:27to be a sailboat.
07:28We're 100% finding a sailboat.
07:31This is the most fun part is because I get to see how excited you are.
07:36Dude.
07:37This build's going to be a blast.
07:38We're creating an ocean-going escape right here in the middle of the prairie for our adventure-loving
07:44clients, Joe and Mandy.
07:45At the heart of this is a real sailboat that'll be lowered into the ground so it looks like
07:50it's floating on waves of grass.
07:52Around it, we'll craft a custom deck, or slip, that doubles as the perfect hangout spot
07:57for family and friends.
07:58Inside, we'll turn the cabin into a cozy retreat with spaces to cook, sleep, and host, or to
08:06tuck away and fill a million miles away from everything.
08:10The tricky part is we don't know much about big sailboats, which means a lot of this build
08:15is uncharted waters for us.
08:17But hey, we'll figure it out together.
08:20And then I have a lot of ideas in terms of deck and what we want to do for entertainment,
08:25where it should even sit so I can run home and sketch that up.
08:29Love it.
08:37Coming up with ideas is the easy part.
08:40Finding a sailboat in a landlocked state like South Dakota is much harder.
08:46Sprout and I spent several days searching, researching, texting, calling.
08:54Like this?
08:55But everything was either too big.
08:58Wow.
08:59Aw, it's so cute.
09:01Or too small.
09:02Yeah, that's not going to work.
09:04Mm-hmm.
09:04Yes.
09:05Or too far away.
09:07Michigan?
09:08Pass.
09:10We're just not a sailboat.
09:11Is that purple?
09:13Hello?
09:14Hi.
09:15But then, after a lot of digging...
09:16I did call earlier.
09:18I wanted to...
09:18We landed on the perfect vessel.
09:20Okay.
09:21Great.
09:25I think I found it.
09:30Sprout tracked down a sailboat that's 32 feet long and eight feet wide,
09:35and apparently fully loaded with all the boaty things a boat's supposed to have.
09:39Now, I don't know much about that, but I do know that this one is nearby,
09:43which already makes it my kind of boat.
09:46Wow, that's like a legit sailboat.
09:48The owner's away, but he gave us the green light to go check it out.
09:52It's definitely larger than the pictures.
09:54It looks good.
09:56Uh-huh.
09:56The boat's 32-ish feet.
09:59Okay.
09:59That mast is another five feet on either side.
10:02That's a 40-foot mast.
10:04Holy catfish.
10:06Well, so this is all obviously rudder.
10:08Yeah.
10:09Little propeller.
10:10I was expecting there to be, like, cracks or something in it.
10:14Yeah.
10:15But there's not.
10:16I'm not loving those tires.
10:18Me neither.
10:19That's a bit scary.
10:20I think the only scary part about this boat is when it's on.
10:23Yikes.
10:24It doesn't have to go far.
10:25Mm-mm.
10:26Well, riddle me this.
10:27This trailer's on its last leg, so there's no other use for it.
10:31But it does provide a foundation for the boat, and the wheels could help us.
10:34What if we just dug a hole and just drove the trailer into it and parked it?
10:38It would just be, like, in the ground?
10:40Yeah, just dig a square hole, the size we need.
10:43Uh-huh.
10:43Take the skid steer, back this dude into the hole.
10:45Uh-huh.
10:45To the whatever level we decide, and then backfill the hole.
10:49So the boat and the trailer is buried.
10:50I'm good with that.
10:52Okay.
10:52Now the tires will lose air over time, so I want to jack up the corners of the boat trailer
10:57and block them up, lifting the tires off the ground.
11:00Right.
11:00I'll tell you what.
11:01I'd like to look inside, kid.
11:02Okay.
11:03Why don't you go grab the truck and just pull it up next to it, and we can get off
11:07the bed.
11:08Okay.
11:10Sweet.
11:16Can you get it?
11:17I'm just worried about the stability of the boat.
11:19Oh, no, it's on the trailer, kid.
11:21You're good.
11:21I mean, you go first, but love you.
11:25Love you.
11:27It's not bad.
11:30Well, that's like wood around it.
11:32Uh-huh.
11:34Oh, it's not bad.
11:36Check it out.
11:37Oh, yeah.
11:38It's got a little galley and a cameraman and...
11:40Hi.
11:41Hi.
11:42Got a little table and a little stove.
11:44Uh-huh.
11:45How hot is it in there?
11:47Very hot.
11:48You're doing great.
11:51I don't know, kid.
11:52I like it.
11:52It looks good.
11:53I don't know anything about boats, but I know it's not beat up.
11:56Yeah.
11:56The inside's good.
11:57It doesn't smell bad.
11:58There's no, like, junk and garbage and, like, rotten stuff in there.
12:01So that's good.
12:02Yeah, he said to just come check it out and make him an offer, so...
12:04Okay.
12:05Let's buy us a boat.
12:17Today's the day we're gonna launch this sailboat on its voyage to its new home on the prairie.
12:24I'm mostly excited that, in the middle of a landlocked state, we can build this boat retreat for Joe and
12:32Mandy.
12:34Right.
12:35I think the hatches have been battened down, the wind is in our favor, but the road ahead is bumpy.
12:43And I hope the wheels on this trailer will make it for one more journey.
12:48So the challenge is with this trailer, it's not designed to take this down the interstate or over the road.
12:56It's designed to move the boat from the water to its parking spot for the winter.
13:06So it's a pretty rough-and-tumble homemade trailer.
13:10It doesn't have lights, doesn't have anything like that, doesn't have a license plate.
13:14It just has a hitch and four wheels.
13:17I'm hoping they don't fall off on the way to Joe and Mandy's.
13:24While I keep my eyes astern, Sprout, Tanner, and Dustin are carving out a hole that's about to become our
13:31ship's new harbor.
13:33We gotta go about ten feet deep.
13:36We gotta build a ramp so we can back the sailboat into this pit.
13:41And that's the tricky part, because it's gotta be nice and gradual.
13:53Slowly but surely, we made it to Joe and Mandy's property.
14:00We're on the final leg with our sailboat, its last journey.
14:09Where we ultimately decided to dock this boat is about a half a mile across a hayfield.
14:15And it's no road, it's just really sort of a rutted path that they use with the tractors to get
14:19in and out.
14:20It's not meant to travel like this.
14:24The worst thing that could happen, I guess, is this thing could fall off of its moorings.
14:29And we have a real problem.
14:30We're just going real slow.
14:32I can't lose it with a half a mile to go.
14:38This is literally three miles an hour.
14:41Dude, check it out. Here she comes.
14:44That is so cool.
14:46I like how you can't see his pickup yet.
14:48And it just looks like the boat's sailing by itself through the grass.
14:51So this is the dream.
14:52To put a boat in the middle of the prairie.
14:55Yup.
14:55With waves of grass.
14:56Yes.
14:59So the plan is to put a boat in a hole.
15:02What's the worst that could happen?
15:06That is impressive.
15:11It's big.
15:14Could you find a bigger boat?
15:17Dude, this trailer was not meant to drive that.
15:2132 foot.
15:22It's huge.
15:23The plan is we'll just get it lined up pretty close and disconnected.
15:26Then we'll just use the stinger on the skid steer to lower the boat into the hole.
15:30Okay.
15:30All right.
15:31Questions, comments, concerns?
15:32Let's hope it works.
15:33Time to drop anchor.
15:35Jeez.
15:37All right.
15:40Sprout's skid steer skills get better every day.
15:43Mainly because I challenge her whenever I can.
15:46And moving this big boat into place is a perfect opportunity to build her confidence.
15:51Bring her own in, kiddo.
15:54Go back.
15:55Back up just a hair.
15:59Okay.
16:02All right.
16:03How you feeling?
16:04I'm a little nervous.
16:08I've never buried a boat either.
16:11I don't think anything's going to happen.
16:13But if this thing shifts or if there's any sort of failure, you have to be stable.
16:18Because if you do this or your reaction is to like move your hands, it makes it worse.
16:24Right?
16:25So if this boat wants to go, there's nothing you're going to do to save it.
16:30You're in the safest thing you can be in right now in that metal cage.
16:34Okay.
16:34I believe in you, kid.
16:35You got this.
16:36Okay.
16:37All right.
16:37So I'm going to be watching Tanner.
16:38You're going to be watching me.
16:39We're just going to crawl her down.
16:43And that speed is perfect.
16:45Just crawl.
16:46It's like almost as slow as you can do it.
16:50Yeah, just a little bit this way.
16:53This boat weighs close to 13,000 pounds, which is a little bit more than the skid steer weighs.
16:58So we have to bring this down real easy.
17:01All right.
17:01Keep coming straight.
17:06Right now, we're at a really good pitch.
17:08And when we get down to the bottom of the hole they dug, then this thing will level out and
17:12we'll set the tongue right on the ground.
17:14Alex, why don't you turn towards Cappy a little bit?
17:18Yep.
17:19A little more.
17:20Okay.
17:20Okay, come straight in.
17:22Only got this far to go.
17:24Okay, we only have a couple feet left.
17:26And we're trying to get it as close to centered in the hole as we can.
17:30Okay.
17:34So Sprout backed it in perfectly.
17:36Nice job, kiddo.
17:40The boat's at a good height.
17:42But now the problem is it's not level.
17:44The boat itself is tipped up here and we want it to be here.
17:50So we need to dig a little more dirt out from under this end of the trailer.
17:55Straight back.
17:56To make this happen, Sprout needs to back out with the skid steer and I'll get in there with an
18:03excavator.
18:06I just have to worry about my guys in the hole.
18:08I don't want to bump the trailer and I don't want to hit the mast.
18:13I think we're good over here.
18:14I would just jump back the body width and then just try to get your teeth under here.
18:18Okay.
18:19So our trick when we're setting this thing is we need to set it level.
18:23But there's nowhere to put a level on this boat.
18:26It's shaped like a banana.
18:29So Sprout's spotting behind us and she's the one telling us whether the front needs to go down or the
18:33back needs to go up.
18:34How's it look, kiddo?
18:36Two thumbs up.
18:40You got your boat.
18:41I know.
18:42Well, I think we have to rename it.
18:44I don't know. What do you think is a good name for a boat?
18:47Well, I feel like since it should be meaningful, we should name it after Joe and Mandy's friend Dale.
18:54I like it.
18:55Okay.
18:56Dale.
18:57Dale.
18:58Love it, kiddo.
19:08Mandy and Joe's ocean theme escape is taking shape.
19:12We've successfully sunk our land yacht into the prairie.
19:15Now we can frame up the dock around it.
19:18First order of business, mark out where the deck posts will stand,
19:22which will anchor into these concrete blocks that sit on top of the ground.
19:26Okay, kiddo, you can just park that in front of the ramp.
19:34The reason they're shaped like that pyramid is the physics of spreading out the footprint.
19:41But before we place these foundation blocks, we need to figure out exactly where they should go.
19:49We wanted to have at least five feet of walkway so you could come up the stairs, walk down a
19:55nice deck, and then on the back of the boat is where the hangout's going to be, where you can
19:58sit and have chairs and all the things.
20:01But we want the decking to be right up against the boat.
20:03We don't want any gaps.
20:05So trying to draw this right-angle L-shape against a boat that is curved is a little bit of
20:12a challenge.
20:12So what we're going to do is take string lines in two directions, in two axes.
20:16We'll use that to mark the peak of the hull's curve.
20:19From there, we can set the corners for our deck frame.
20:23Once the frame is up, we can cut the pieces of decking that will hug the boat's shape.
20:32Have you thought about hitting it hard?
20:37Sure.
20:39Come on up. Come on up. Come on up.
20:42I've never missed yet.
20:49All right, kid. That's going to be our footprint. Straight and square. Feeling good about it.
21:07The sailboat came with just about everything.
21:11Except an anchor.
21:12Now, I could search around antique shops or scrapyards.
21:17Wood.
21:18But the best place to start.
21:20Truck.
21:21Is Cappy's growing boneyard.
21:24Section of truck.
21:26Or treasure trove, as he calls it, at Shortgrass.
21:29He's always tossing odds and ends into a pile until an inspiration strikes.
21:34One pile of gravel.
21:37While I'm looking, I'm going to start to organize things with an inventory of Cappy's collection.
21:43Don't know what this is.
21:47C drawing here.
21:49Not to scale.
21:52Back scratcher?
21:54Steel.
22:02I think it should work.
22:04And now comes the challenge.
22:07Figuring out how this anchor will fit into the build and how I can make it look truly unique.
22:19Ahoy from the grassy seas of South Dakota.
22:24We're building a dock that'll surround our land yacht.
22:32So we're on the home stretch of our last pieces of deck framing.
22:35We're going to be onto deck boards today.
22:37Our goal today was just to get the framing done and we're way ahead of schedule.
22:41These guys have rocked it.
22:44This deck?
22:45It's going to be solid.
22:46I don't think you could capsize this boat cap.
22:50Years ago, the crew coined the term capsized for any build that gets bigger and more elaborate as we go
22:56along.
22:56Oh, that is so big!
22:58This is a capsized greenhouse.
23:00As if we didn't just like double the size of it.
23:03Maybe we should think about doing a sprout-sized thing instead of a capsized thing.
23:08Normally it's a good thing, but when you're working with a boat, not so much.
23:14We've never actually used that term in relation to a boat.
23:17That's fine.
23:18I like it.
23:22While Cappy, David and Dustin get sweaty, I get creative.
23:27I'm going to paint something special, something interesting that we can add on our build.
23:32I'm envisioning this like as a part of the landscaping almost, where they'll walk up and it'll be anchoring the
23:39boat to the ground.
23:40I'm thinking I'll do like a rip curl, where it is the start of the wave where it starts to
23:48break and have that white foam look.
23:50So I'll start with this dark blue first and just work that on the bottom area.
23:56Maybe get that outline of the rip curl.
23:59I totally understand why Joe and Mandy love the ocean and love the water.
24:04I've been in the water since I was small.
24:07I started surfing when I was around five.
24:09And so I'm hoping that we can help make sure that they feel the ocean out here in the middle
24:15of South Dakota.
24:18Okay, once I get this base structure down, I can work on the accents and then add the ocean spray.
24:27And then this will be ready for Joe and Mandy to drop anchor.
24:35While Sprout weighs the anchor, the boat slip is moving full steam ahead.
24:42David, our master carpenter, curved the decking perfectly around the boat's hull.
24:47And now it's literally all hands on deck, making sure every board lines up ship's shape as we fasten them
24:54down tight.
24:55Hi. Hey.
24:56So we have like 90% of the deck boards on. We have about a dozen left to go.
25:00And then last thing we have for this deck is the stairs right on the front end by the boat.
25:04And then the next piece is to hang the mast up.
25:08Can I go now?
25:10Yeah.
25:16Joe and Mandy's boat-themed getaway is sailing right along.
25:20And today we're going to focus on the star of the show, the boat herself.
25:24First order of business is changing the name to something extra special for them.
25:29And Aunt Wren's on deck to give me a hand.
25:3359 and a half. What's half of 59 and a half?
25:36Uh, 29 and three quarters.
25:39Good.
25:42I sketched the new name onto transfer paper so we can trace the letters right onto the stern.
25:47Giving us a perfect guide when it's time to paint.
25:51So, tell me about why we're putting a new name.
25:55So, Dale was a close family friend who inspired them to move to South Dakota.
26:01So we thought it would be nice if we named it Dale.
26:03That's awesome.
26:06I think Joe and Mandy are going to love this.
26:09Yeah, everybody needs their private getaway space.
26:13I literally cannot see another house or man-made thing from here besides a fence.
26:20Yep. It's just prairie.
26:22That's awesome.
26:25Wren finishes up painting the name while I set a course back to town for an appointment to pick out
26:30deck furniture.
26:31Which means I'm skipping a stressful part of the build.
26:37Sure, parking a boat in the middle of a pasture checks the box for our one-of-a-kind builds.
26:43But it's not really a boat until the mast goes up.
26:46And since my boat knowledge is about as empty as the ocean out here, figuring that part out has my
26:51brain tied in knots.
26:54I was working on it in my head last night, how we're going to set this 36-foot mast up
27:00on the top of this boat.
27:01I got a bunch of wannabe pirates that have never even been on a boat.
27:03I want to unwrap the steering wheel.
27:05I want to unwrap the steering wheel.
27:05What is it that called, the tiller or whatever?
27:08We got a telehandler, not a crane, so I only have 40 feet of reach, but I know the mast
27:11is 36 feet and no instructions, so stay tuned.
27:16To pull this off, in addition to Wren, I've recruited three of my most trusted land lovers.
27:22There's a lot of brains on this right now.
27:25I think we have a plan to do it, but we're going to go get the telehandler and rig it
27:28up with a pick strap,
27:29and then we're going to pick this mast up and slide it back down in the hole.
27:34Cap, there is no hole.
27:36There's just a bracket. You're just going to put it on that bracket.
27:37There's just a bracket, and it sits right on top of it.
27:43Okay, so we're not exactly off to a flying start.
27:46And because nothing's ever simple, I also managed to forget a key piece of equipment.
27:51We're going to pick up the mast.
27:53We got the machine to do it, but we don't have any of my lift straps.
27:56So, this rope, I'm going to cut it in half and I'm going to make a strap.
28:03I'm 11% sure this is going to work.
28:06That thing plugs into right here.
28:08Yeah.
28:08Then, of course, there's the question of how do we actually secure the mast once it's up.
28:14I just, I mean, so you've got these little cable dealers.
28:17I don't care. Anything that bolts this thing together, what do we got down there?
28:20Nothing, man.
28:21Normally, I'd lean on years of building experience.
28:24And where's the boom that the sail goes out on?
28:26Oh, it's on the ground over there.
28:29But this time, it's all about how-to videos on the internet.
28:32Good call, Wren.
28:33So, the slot on the mast faces the stern and then the furler attaches to the front and then there's
28:41a couple of side arms that hold the sails front and back.
28:45Yeah.
28:46Easy peasy.
28:47Furler.
28:47Boom.
28:48Some turnbuckles, flux capacitor, and let's stand a mast.
28:55I always say this job is like flying a plane as you build it.
28:58And it's never been truer than today.
29:01Except this time, it's a boat.
29:04You know what I mean.
29:06All right, you guys ready?
29:07I think so.
29:11All right, here we go.
29:19The hardest part is we have to pick this up about the middle of the mast because we don't have
29:24enough reach to pick this up from the very top of the mast.
29:27So, we're going to pick it up and the guys have to swing it under and then we mount it
29:32in this plate on the top of this boat.
29:35Are we still center line with the boat or are we going to go out?
29:38Go out.
29:42I don't want anyone directly underneath that thing.
29:46Okay, that's maxed out on extension.
29:49That's it?
29:50Wren, don't fight them so hard because I think you're pulling the top.
29:53Okay, I'm coming up.
29:56All right, we're going to try to twist it and get it in there.
29:59Okay, what's at the bottom?
30:01Okay, turn it.
30:04Okay.
30:05Push it in.
30:07Okay.
30:08You guys going to muscle it or do you want me to try to move it?
30:10Rock it that way.
30:11Okay.
30:20Yeah, that's doing it.
30:24Yeah, there it is.
30:28Let's get the gun out.
30:29It's tipping.
30:30Cappy, come help.
30:31Don't let it fall.
30:33What do we got to do?
30:35Let's push it up and get it back in the bracket.
30:37Stand up.
30:38Ready?
30:39Good pull.
30:39Okay, let's try to push it back on three.
30:42One, two, three.
30:45Get it in there.
30:47Get it, Scotty.
30:48Nope.
30:49Whoa.
30:50There it is.
30:51Yeah, it's in the bracket.
30:52It's in.
30:53Holy Christmas.
30:55So we've got it in its cradle in the bottom.
30:57Our ropes are holding, but there's an absolute rat's nest of cables and wires.
31:02Okay, look.
31:03This one here.
31:04Yeah, this is all tied up.
31:06So that one there.
31:07This one goes.
31:08We call it a yard arm or whatever.
31:09Where's the pins for these?
31:10This is not ideal.
31:11So there's four cables that hold this in place.
31:15But figuring out which four is the issue.
31:19Luckily, Dustin finally cracks the code.
31:21Okay, this one goes over here.
31:23This one goes here.
31:25And these two guys get hooked on somewhere else.
31:28We're attaching these two pieces, these buckles, these cables, so we can stand this all the
31:33way up.
31:34Trying to keep it forward-aft correct, and then the yaw east and west.
31:44I got mine in.
31:45Mine's in.
31:47Mine's in, too.
31:48I'm not cut out to be a pirate.
31:51I like the land.
31:53Dude, we got a mast up, man.
31:56Holy buckets.
31:57It's in.
31:58Just got to figure out where the other 27 cables go.
32:12While Cappy and the build crew try to become a sailing crew, I get the fun job.
32:18Hunting down cool furniture to turn the deck into the ultimate hangout spot.
32:23I'm currently shopping for some furniture to put on the deck at Joe and Mandy's.
32:33This is huge.
32:35I really like our theme of the ocean and whatnot, and I want to keep that same vibe, but just
32:42a little bit more elevated and not quite lake house-esque.
32:46I'm hoping that maybe something like this will be a little nicer, and this will fit better
32:52for the project.
32:54I like this one a lot.
32:56It is a little white.
32:59Yeah.
33:02Especially with how much seating this set offers, I can totally see Joe and Mandy with
33:08some friends hanging out here after a long day.
33:11I feel like this definitely fits them.
33:14Okay.
33:15I think I'll go ask if they can box this up.
33:23It's been a long day out on the prairie.
33:26We're still scratching our heads over which cables do what.
33:29I imagine this rope started nice and pristine, and whoever's on this boat one night just fiddling
33:34and just started tying knots and things because there was nothing else to do in the middle
33:37of the ocean.
33:41Last task of the day.
33:44I'm taking a ride to the very top of the mast to hang up the solar powered string lights
33:48that Sprout picked out.
33:51Got it.
33:54Zip tie it to the rail thingy.
34:00Okay, you can take me down.
34:03The destination is in sight.
34:06And soon enough, Joe and Mandy will set sail in their epic prairie getaway.
34:16It's another beautiful day on the high seas, and Sprout wanted me out here bright and
34:24early to tackle a special project with buckets and scrub brushes.
34:29Hello.
34:30Yo-ho.
34:32Ah, it looks great.
34:33You're welcome, but I love you enough to put those lights up.
34:36It looks so good.
34:38Pretty cool.
34:39What do you got going on?
34:40I am tackling the inside of the boat today.
34:43Ah, I see.
34:44I'm going to clear out all the junk in there and figure out what it needs to look nice
34:47for Joe and Mandy.
34:49Okay.
34:55Oh, there's stuff in here.
34:57I'll hand you the stuff we don't need.
35:00Oh.
35:02Jiminy Christmas, dude.
35:05How many...
35:07What is this, a hemorrhoid cushion?
35:10What is...
35:10I don't need those.
35:11You don't need those?
35:12You should take them.
35:13I don't need them.
35:14What if you need more?
35:15I don't need any more.
35:16I have a full roll.
35:18Okay.
35:19Now let's see what we have to work with down here.
35:22We have some couch cushions.
35:25Ooh, a complete guide to sales and sail handling.
35:29Does that book say anything about how to set a mast back up?
35:33You read it and tell me what it says.
35:36If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
35:42Our boat is leaking.
35:43There's no one at our helm.
35:46Huh?
35:46There's only a book on board and sheer will.
35:49We are struggling.
35:50Send help.
35:51We're from South Dakota.
35:52Help!
35:53We don't know what we're doing.
35:54We're from a landlocked state.
35:56We don't know how this works.
35:58Listen, if this capsizes, I'm just...
36:00I'm going with Davy Jones' locker, dude.
36:02Love you.
36:03It's good to know you.
36:04Hey, Cap.
36:05The starboard side needs scrubbing.
36:07I'm pretty sure port side needs a little bit of touch-up paint on the edging.
36:11Well, you lost me at port, but I'll do that first part.
36:17I don't know what that is.
36:18Oh, deck hand.
36:20Yes, Captain.
36:21How's it going?
36:22Great.
36:23Great.
36:24Make sure to scrub more.
36:26That's aye-aye to you, deck hand.
36:31Inside is looking much better.
36:33All I think I really need is blankets or something to make sure that it's all set for Joe and
36:39Mandy.
36:42Looking good, deck hand.
36:45Walk the plank, Captain.
36:48Oh, my God.
37:00Today's the big day.
37:02The good ship Dale is ready to launch.
37:05The sailboat sanctuary is ready to carry Joe and Mandy and all their loved ones into years of adventure on
37:11the prairie seas.
37:13I still don't know what half this stuff does.
37:16This looks really good, kid.
37:17I like your lights.
37:18They were a pain in the butt, but they're cool.
37:21Yeah, that wasn't as easy of an ask as I thought that was.
37:24No, worth it, dude.
37:25Every day.
37:26Nice.
37:26Awesome.
37:27All right.
37:28I'm going to head down and get Joe and Mandy.
37:29Okay.
37:29And I'll bring them back up.
37:30Okay.
37:31Nice.
37:33Joe and Mandy are waiting back at their house on the far side of the property.
37:37They've never laid eyes on this build.
37:40So while Sprout finishes up some of the final touches, I'm going to pick them up.
37:44I'm taking every precaution not to spill the beans.
37:47Blindfolds, guys.
37:48Okay.
37:48We're doing blindfolds.
37:49So we just have a little bit of a drive into the field here.
37:53You can see it from a little ways off.
37:55So I wanted it to be a surprise until we got up there.
37:58I often wonder, like, when we do things like this, is what the neighbors think.
38:01Yeah, the closest neighbor's not that close out here, but...
38:03This is true.
38:04You do not have a lot of neighbors out here.
38:08Blindfolds on.
38:08No peeking.
38:09Okay, no peeking.
38:10All right.
38:10I'm good.
38:11Okay.
38:11So I'm just having you stand right here.
38:13Okay.
38:13I won't leave your husband stuck in the car.
38:15Grace.
38:15Yes.
38:16All right, sir.
38:19Perfect, right there.
38:21All right.
38:23How are we feeling standing in the middle of your property with blindfolds on?
38:25Yes.
38:26So excited.
38:27Butterflies?
38:27So excited.
38:28Yeah, lots of butterflies.
38:29All right, on the count of three, you can take your blindfolds off.
38:32Okay.
38:32Okay?
38:33One, two, three.
38:34One, two, three.
38:36Oh, my gosh.
38:37Oh, my gosh.
38:39Are you kidding me?
38:41No!
38:43How'd you do that?
38:44No way!
38:44That's amazing.
38:50Wow.
38:51Did you guys do that?
38:53Alex dug a giant hole in the ground.
38:56Yup.
38:56That's how.
38:58That's sitting on a boat trailer.
38:59Wow.
39:00We dropped anchor in the middle of your property.
39:02Speaking of anchors, our anchor is right over there.
39:06Wow.
39:07We're the only ones with the painted anchor.
39:09Crazy.
39:09You guys want to go take a look at this?
39:11I so want to take a look.
39:12Mandy, go for it.
39:13Okay.
39:14This is insane.
39:16You've got to be joking.
39:18This is nuts.
39:21I love it.
39:23Oh, look at that.
39:23Wow.
39:24Look at that.
39:27Oh, my gosh.
39:29What do you think of that?
39:30Oh, my gosh.
39:32Wow.
39:34Are you joking?
39:36Oh, that's so cool.
39:39The name of the boat is Dale.
39:41Amazing man.
39:44Perfect surprise.
39:45Great name for a boat.
39:47I mean, for them to do that was above and beyond.
39:50Yeah.
39:51Love it.
39:53You guys had talked a lot about the adventure.
39:56You guys had had the houseboat, but thinking about the safety piece of it, right?
40:00Open water, open ocean.
40:01There's a lot to go with that.
40:02We are from a landlocked state.
40:04We understand how, like, the ocean isn't exactly feeling very safe when you don't know what's
40:09underneath.
40:10Like, I love the concept of the water, right?
40:12You're just out in this beautiful open area and so peaceful, which is here as well.
40:20And then we wanted to make it look like it was parked at a marina.
40:23Absolutely.
40:24And then give you a big enough deck that you could hang out with friends and have drinks,
40:27do some cooking if you wanted to.
40:29Everything in the boat is completely intact.
40:30The cabin is completely functioning on the inside.
40:35Well, Cappy, can we board?
40:37Absolutely.
40:38There you go.
40:38Absolutely, Captain.
40:39Go for it.
40:44This is so cool.
40:48And your favorite stuff.
40:51Yay!
40:51Games.
40:52This is exactly what we do.
40:55Yes.
40:56Hang out on the water, play games.
40:58Mm-hmm.
40:59Chill.
40:59Whoa.
40:59How fun.
41:01Wow.
41:03What's in there?
41:04I don't know.
41:06That's the bedroom.
41:07Wow.
41:08And these benches can burn to beds.
41:10This is amazing.
41:11You can comfortably sleep up to six.
41:13So fun.
41:14But with a big deck, you can have more people than that.
41:16Yeah.
41:17Can I peek?
41:17Yeah.
41:18Icebox.
41:19Oh, wow.
41:20That's great.
41:21That is awesome.
41:21We wanted it really to feel like it was just a boat out here in a slip and then the
41:26ocean just went away.
41:28You succeeded.
41:29So glad you guys love it.
41:30Yes.
41:31Thank you very much.
41:32It is the best of both worlds.
41:34We have the adventure of being out on the open space and we have the same feel that we did
41:41on the water that we loved so much.
41:44We can vacation every night.
41:47Yes, we can.
41:48Well, should we let these lovely people enjoy their space?
41:51Yes, I think so.
41:52Oh, thank you.
41:52Thank you very much.
41:53All right.
41:55All your work.
