00:00We want something that's tasteful, but also unique.
00:05Oh, it's good pizza.
00:06We're building this outdoor kitchen, hangout, barbecue space.
00:13Today is rammed earth day.
00:18I don't know why people go to the gym.
00:20Ever.
00:23Little more.
00:24Shoshugiban.
00:25It's a Japanese technique to preserve the wood.
00:27Oh, oh.
00:31Good chap.
00:32Thanks, Teej.
00:32Good chap.
00:33What is this?
00:35It's a smoker.
00:36You can bake in it.
00:39I could grow herbs in those.
00:41I love this.
00:44My given name is Jared Capp.
00:48But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:50This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:52Everyone, Claire, I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:57Woohoo!
00:57But I've recently teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
01:00Whoa.
01:01It looks so good in here.
01:03Who specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:06Whoa!
01:08Awake now.
01:09What if we did use a plane?
01:11Wait, really?
01:11All right, Alex, she's all yours.
01:14Into one of a kind creations.
01:16This is no she shed.
01:18This has turned into a she palace.
01:20Oh my God.
01:21And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:24Love you, man.
01:25I love you.
01:26That is so beautiful.
01:28Oh my God.
01:28Look it, look it, look it.
01:29But the best part is we get to do it together.
01:54We're headed to Chad and Mandy's today.
01:57The last time you were at their place was the greenhouse, yes?
01:59Seven, eight years ago?
02:00Yeah, that was one of the first projects you ever worked with me on.
02:03Big geodesic dome.
02:04I remember you were very excited about the shape of it.
02:07I was like, this is so cool.
02:10I was like, all the panels are in triangles.
02:12You're so small, you couldn't hold the extension cords up.
02:15So you'd roll them on the ground.
02:16Mm-hmm.
02:16And then I'd pick them up and hang them up.
02:19You'll remember they have the log house in the forest up above Leed.
02:23I'm not sure what they're looking for, but I know they've been doing some upgrades on the landscape and things
02:28like that.
02:28Long before you were born, they used to own in town an English pub called the Knight's Cellar.
02:33Really?
02:34Yeah, it was so cool.
02:36It was in this basement of this 130-year-old limestone building.
02:40It felt very English pub.
02:41It was really cool.
02:42That's crazy.
02:43Yep.
02:44I'm excited to see what they think we can do for them.
02:47Cool.
03:02Beautiful.
03:03Look at the greenhouse.
03:06Hey.
03:08How are you guys?
03:09Good.
03:10Amazing.
03:11Nice to see you.
03:12Nice to see you, too.
03:13Thanks for coming up.
03:14Absolutely, yeah.
03:15Tell me a story.
03:15I'm not sure why we're here.
03:18We've been here 25 years.
03:20Yeah, we're the second owners.
03:21Really?
03:22One of the most.
03:22I'm going to invite you guys out to see if you can sniff it up a little bit.
03:25Sure.
03:26We like to entertain.
03:26We had an English pub for a number of years.
03:28So it was like having a house party every night.
03:31And we don't have that anymore.
03:32We miss that.
03:32Just hanging out, making some food.
03:35That's our style.
03:36We have family and friends out a lot, and outdoor space.
03:39We're looking at an outdoor space, something along that line.
03:42Okay.
03:42Kind of sounds like you need an outdoor kitchen.
03:44Oh, that'd be great.
03:46Yeah.
03:47Is there a specific place on the property that we're thinking?
03:49Kind of the greenhouse that you helped with in that area, that vicinity.
03:53Awesome.
03:54Well, I see pretty green things in it.
03:55Yes.
03:55Must be doing well.
03:57It's producing.
04:00We thought this is an area right between the greenhouse and the garage where we'd love
04:06to sit around.
04:07We've got a fireplace there, maybe spruce it up and entertain, have some friends and family
04:12out.
04:13Open on the sides, I think, covered just for elements.
04:17Be able to capture that view.
04:19Yep.
04:20Yep.
04:20Absolutely.
04:20Nice.
04:21How many people are we thinking that you'll have there?
04:24We're not talking 50 people.
04:25Yeah.
04:26Probably, you know, six to ten people.
04:29We want something that's tasteful, but also unique, has character.
04:33I mean, our place has a lot of character, and I think they would do a phenomenal job with
04:38that.
04:39And then are there any things that we should stay away from in terms of colors or are there
04:43things that you want us to highlight?
04:44We're very earthy.
04:47Timeless.
04:47Very timeless.
04:48Yeah.
04:48Blend in to the area.
04:51All right.
04:52I think I'm good.
04:53Love it.
04:54Very cool.
04:54So excited.
04:55Thank you, guys.
04:55Thank you so much for coming out.
04:57Awesome.
04:57You bet.
04:58We'll talk to you guys in a bit.
04:59Thanks, guys.
05:00See you later.
05:02Well, it's almost lunchtime.
05:04Hey, why don't we head home and fire up the pizza up and figure this one out?
05:07Sounds good to me.
05:18Ooh.
05:19What is this?
05:19It smells good.
05:20Mmm.
05:21It's a lunchtime.
05:22Looks like we lost the sun.
05:23Yeah, but it's perfect pizza weather.
05:26Little crispy.
05:27I figured you'd want just cheese on yours.
05:29Mm-hmm.
05:30Let's talk Chad and Mandy.
05:33They entertain.
05:34That means family, friends, food, and drink.
05:37I think in outdoor kitchens, just what they need.
05:39Oh, that's good pizza.
05:40Isn't it good?
05:41The challenge, I think, is to make it fit their style.
05:45Mm-hmm.
05:45So if you did sort of a square back here with a roof on it, like some sort of cover,
05:50and then we did, this is where that fire pit is.
05:53Yep.
05:53And then people could sit out here, because here's the greenhouse.
05:56Mm-hmm.
05:56And here's that view, I mean, is just nothing but view that way.
06:00Mm-hmm.
06:00Yeah, I think they definitely need a food prep space to just set the food out.
06:05The question is, what would we build it out of?
06:07I clearly love my natural materials.
06:09How about rammed earth?
06:11You know, we'll take the native soil and compress it into forms and use that as the base for the
06:16food prep area.
06:18That would be really cool, actually.
06:20It's natural, but it's not crunchy.
06:23It is very modern looking when it's done.
06:25Yeah.
06:25It's modern looking.
06:26It looks really clean.
06:27There's no maintenance.
06:28It is just there.
06:30Yeah.
06:31What would the roof be?
06:32Would that just be like wood?
06:34Because what I'm thinking about is we have this gray scale build, right?
06:39And then we have these bright wood brown beams.
06:43It feels a little out of place.
06:44Burn them.
06:46Show Shuggie Bon them.
06:47Hold up, what is this called?
06:49Show Shuggie Bon.
06:51I swear, that's like a roasted pepper or something.
06:55No.
06:55It sounds like it is.
06:56That's a Shishido.
06:57Oh.
06:58Different.
06:58Close.
06:59Shoshuggie Bon.
07:00Just take a weed torch and you burn them.
07:02Used to do it to preserve wood a long time ago in Japan.
07:07The plan is to create an outdoor kitchen.
07:09There will be a space for Mandy and Chad to host family and friends.
07:13And relive their time as pub owners.
07:16We'll build a covered area with wooden beams heavy enough to handle a big snow load.
07:21And treat them with an ancient Japanese technique to blend them into Mandy's earthy palette.
07:28Under the roof will be a food prep area including a mini fridge, a barbecue grill, and a countertop made
07:34from natural materials.
07:35All supported by a rammed earth base.
07:38A round concrete pad will extend in front to handle seating for a few guests or for dancing during jam
07:44sessions.
07:46When we normally have a build like this, there's kind of already an area that's kind of rough and tough
07:51that we can mess things up a little bit.
07:53But for this, we really need to be careful about...
07:56All their finished space.
07:58Yeah.
07:58And all of those lawns are off limits.
08:00You're gonna figure out a color palette for the rammed earth for me?
08:02Yes.
08:03I'll source timbers.
08:04Okay.
08:04Cool.
08:05Should I heat your pizza back up?
08:06I'm gonna warm up mine too.
08:09You're welcome.
08:19With fall here and winter on the way, we can't waste any time getting the foundation set.
08:25But with Alex's mandate of protecting the lawn, we have to be careful with the heavy machinery.
08:31So instead of using the skid steer, we've rented a sod cutter to do the job.
08:47I miss my air-conditioned skid steer.
08:52With Ruby and Dustin's help, we get the area cleared and ready for concrete forms.
09:00Don't tell Sprout, but I was able to use a baby excavator to carefully dig out the excess dirt.
09:07After compacting the soil, the forms are set and the rebar is put into place.
09:13All we need now is 11 cubic yards of concrete and a bunch of muscle.
09:31Another beautiful day.
09:37Today is concrete stamped patio day at Chad and Mandy's.
09:42We have all the rebar in.
09:43We have the electrical conduit in.
09:45We're 100% ready.
09:47And like clockwork, our concrete guys are here.
09:56We brought in a pump this time because we didn't want to drive a concrete truck fully loaded across there.
10:02It makes really, really deep ruts.
10:06All right, the boys got their gum boots on.
10:07I better get mine on and jump into this.
10:12It's not like you can hide a concrete pump truck.
10:15So to keep the build a total surprise, Chad and Mandy are staying with friends while we work.
10:21We pump in the concrete, oftentimes called mud, filling the forms evenly as we can to the top to make
10:27a level surface.
10:28Too much mud is just as bad as not enough mud.
10:34Then we go over it all with a series of trowels and screeds, each of which have a specific job,
10:38until we're left with an even, smooth surface.
10:47And then it's just a waiting game for it to set up enough for us to actually stamp the texture
10:52into it.
10:55Sprout and I decided to do a stamped patio for them.
10:58She picked out a random slate pattern, which is this sort of timeless looking stamp that'll be really cool for
11:05this outdoor space.
11:07A powder release agent keeps the rubber form from sticking to the wet concrete as Dustin and I tamp them
11:13down.
11:13But it also adds a dash of color.
11:16This one's black.
11:17The point being to make the concrete look a little more like natural stone.
11:29I'm headed over to my buddy Levi's shop to pick out a piece of countertop for Chad and Mandy's outdoor
11:36kitchen.
11:36Sprout and I talked about a couple of different things.
11:38We talked about pouring a concrete top.
11:41We talked about even doing butcher block.
11:43Ultimately, we decided wanting something as little maintenance as possible.
11:47So we landed on a stone countertop.
11:50My buddy Levi is the guy that can make that happen.
11:53One of the funnest things about what we get to do is sort of this challenge to recycle and upcycle
11:57things.
11:58In this case, instead of going to buy a whole slab, there's a chance that Levi has a remnant of
12:03a countertop for us.
12:04And hopefully we can score that and it'll work for our project.
12:12But we really wanted to do something sort of next level, something elegant.
12:17A quartz or a marble or something like that we wanted to make just really, really sharp.
12:21I like this one.
12:24How we doing, Cap?
12:24Hey, Daddy-O. How's it going?
12:25Doing all right.
12:26What have we got cooking?
12:27This is for a local couple that were building this outdoor kitchen, hangout, barbecue space.
12:34So if you're going to be doing something outside, you're going to be looking at natural stone, granite.
12:39Probably going to be your best one.
12:40Okay.
12:40Are any of these granite?
12:42This one is granite.
12:43That one is granite.
12:44I did like the black and white one.
12:45Do you have any rems of this?
12:47Let's go look out in the yard and see if we can find any remnants.
12:49Okay.
12:51Holy camoly.
12:52Got a few options.
12:53Look at that boneyard of stone.
12:55So these are all pieces that come from obviously other jobs.
12:57So the remnant or the leftover piece is what these all are.
13:01Correct.
13:01This will be what we were looking at inside there at the discount way.
13:04Oh, sure, sure.
13:04Okay.
13:05And that looks like about a half slab.
13:07That's plenty big for what we're doing.
13:09Perfect.
13:10I'll definitely take that one.
13:11We'll get it tagged.
13:12Thanks, brother.
13:12In touch.
13:13Appreciate it, dude.
13:14All right.
13:14Talk to you soon.
13:28The town of Leed is above 5,000 feet in elevation.
13:31That means Chad and Mandy's place gets snowed on more than we do down in Spearfish.
13:35In one blizzard, they got hammered by like four and a half feet of snow.
13:40I'm having my favorite fabricator, Rodney, build four custom posts for the outdoor kitchen.
13:46Cappy has dropped off more material, of course, here at the shop.
13:50Need to build it with material strong enough to hold up the chunky beam roof, plus a couple
14:05I figure rather than track up the driveway, we can just walk these over there.
14:09So our front left corner is going to be our start, because that piece of conduit has to
14:13feed up inside this first post for an outlet, for a blender or a hot dish thing, or an amp
14:19for Chad's guitar, things like that.
14:22Easy peasy.
14:23Yeah.
14:31You feeling lucky?
14:33We're perfect.
14:34That's pretty dang good.
14:35I'll take it.
14:36I will too.
14:37All day long.
14:38Let's anchor it.
14:41With the post going up and being anchored down, Mandy and Chad's outdoor kitchen is
14:46starting to take shape.
14:49That's sweet.
14:59I'm taking a really large torch.
15:02We're burning the top layer of the wood and sealing it.
15:06It's a natural way to protect it rather than painting it.
15:22Today I'm putting sprout behind the wheel of the telehandler.
15:25It looks a little different than usual because we have a jib attached to the front.
15:29That'll extend the reach of the machine so we can fly these heavy beams in without tracking
15:34across Chad and Mandy's lawn.
15:41Whee!
15:44We're going to go up the driveway, swing wide, and we're going to come in at an angle.
15:49Okay.
15:49Okay.
15:50All right.
15:50If one of these beams clips the house, not good.
15:54So why am I letting sprout drive?
15:56You've got to let kids practice stuff.
15:58You've got to let them practice driving.
16:00You've got to let them use machinery or they're never going to know how to do it.
16:03Slow and smooth.
16:04Swim fast.
16:05Okay.
16:07Let's go up.
16:11All right, Ruby.
16:12We're moving.
16:13Real easy.
16:14Real easy.
16:16Nice and slow.
16:21Okay.
16:21Are you close to where you like it?
16:23I'm pretty dang close to where I want to be.
16:24Okay.
16:25Nice driving, kiddo.
16:26Thanks.
16:27One down.
16:28One more to go.
16:30We're coming down.
16:32Real slow.
16:40Awesome job.
16:43That was fun.
16:45At this rate, I'm going to lose my job.
16:51With her I-beams bolted into place, Sprout heads to dance class and it's time for the
16:56rest of us to get our wood planks prepped and ready.
17:05We set the first rafter up on top of our beams to mark the bird mouth, which is a little
17:10notch that we cut.
17:12So when the rafter sits down, it sits flat on top of our I-beam piece.
17:16We're going to cut this first one and then we're going to use that one as the template
17:20for the other six.
17:21We always want to use the same template every time.
17:24So we're going to get this one set.
17:25As soon as we cut them, we'll burn the ends and make everything match with our cool shishugi
17:30bomb that Alex got sorted.
17:31And as we start flying rafters, we'll be on the roof boards today.
17:46Let's go.
17:48We got our first beam cut.
17:51Bird mouth.
17:52Burned.
17:53Ready to go.
17:54We're going to start stacking this on the far side, working our way back towards the garage.
17:58We're going to do a lovely dance that the boys are going to keep cutting.
18:01Ruby and I are going to keep flying.
18:04We're going to have a roof today.
18:07Woo hoo, buddy.
18:09Like a glove.
18:11This is the first time I've ever sugar bonded anything.
18:13I don't know.
18:14What is this again?
18:17Show Shuggy Bon shows to burn.
18:20Shuggy is cedar or cypress.
18:22Sure.
18:23And Bon is plank.
18:24I learn something here every day.
18:26We just got our first burned plank secured.
18:29Just five more to go.
18:32One by one, we get each plank slotted precisely between the I-beams.
18:37That's perfect.
18:40That was the last of our rafters.
18:42I just got to get this one squared up and bolted down.
18:46Dustin and David make quick work of installing the roof, which means we've got the covered
18:50portion of this build done.
18:51Now we can get to work on the kitchen part.
18:59I'm on the hunt for rain chains and I know just where to find them.
19:05Instead of using a normal downspout, rain water will run out of our gutters and trickle
19:09down the lengths of our chains into pots.
19:12It'll be fun and elegant.
19:15Most people have a garage full of stuff they won't throw away.
19:20Happy has a full-scale junkyard.
19:32I'm here searching for the perfect set of chains.
19:37I have no idea where these are from, what their past life was, but I guess I'll ever know.
19:44I can haul this back to Granny Flats so Cappy can chop it up.
19:49Having his own boneyard really does come in handy.
20:07Now it's time for the part I've been looking forward to all week.
20:12Today is rammed earth day.
20:14I'm so, so excited.
20:16One of my favorite things ever is natural building.
20:18And what's really cool about this technique, it's thousands of years old.
20:21This beautiful, completely natural.
20:24We have limestone crusher fines, which is a byproduct from the limestone quarry here.
20:28It's all the little chips and the limestone dust that falls out as they make gravel.
20:32We mix this with about seven to ten percent Portland cement and you pneumatically or mechanically
20:39ram it in.
20:41Just like concrete walls, we assemble the forms in the shape of our rammed earth creation.
20:46I'm so jazzed.
20:53Dustin and Ruby are at the beginning of our production line churning out the wet mixture.
20:58There we go.
21:08I love it.
21:09That's perfect, huh?
21:10Yep.
21:11While David and I dump it into the forms and start compacting.
21:15That's it.
21:18Then it's like washing your hair.
21:20Rinse and repeat, bucket after bucket.
21:24Well, at least that's what I'm told.
21:32I don't know why people go to the gym.
21:35Ever.
21:50The guys start adding dye to make the mixture darker and darker.
21:55When it's done, you'll see the color gradation go from light to dark, bottom to top.
22:01It's going really smooth.
22:02We'll finish this guy up, clean up all our tools.
22:05And the only sad thing is I have to wait to strip my forms.
22:08It's like Christmas morning as a kid.
22:10I was never very good at waiting for that either.
22:21While we wait for our rammed earth to cure, I'm headed over to Granny Flats to unearth something
22:26that will add a very personal touch to Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen.
22:32If I was a keg, where would I be?
22:39Aha!
22:41I've got an idea.
22:42But before I tell you what it is, I do need to admit something.
22:46I don't know how to tap a keg.
22:48I understand how the concept works.
22:51I know it's under pressure, and I know there's liquid in here.
22:56Which I imagine is aged like a fine wine.
23:01I'm going to get made fun of on the internet for this.
23:07Gross.
23:08It's a different color.
23:09That did not age like a fine wine.
23:13Chad and Mandy used to own a bar a long time ago that they don't have anymore.
23:18But Chad's still a big fan of beer and brewing.
23:21What I thought would be neat is if we cut some bands out of this, we could actually do some
23:25sort of little planter
23:26just to sort of spice up the back of the outdoor kitchen.
23:31The idea is these are just going to have little culinary herbs like your cilantro's and your basils and your
23:37things like that.
23:38Mandy loves to cook, so I wanted to give her a little something that was literally right above the counter,
23:42right above the barbecue grill.
23:43Now that I have these three rings, I'm just going to clean them up, mount my attachment points,
23:50put a little half-moon piece of aluminum in there, and we'll be ready to go.
23:54There's a lot of smells going on in that.
23:57I hope Chad and Mandy love this so much.
23:59My goal is that Chad knows what this is the first time he sees it.
24:03We'll see how far he is from his pub days.
24:06So we'll weld a piece of aluminum across the bottom here, and then that'll be the actual planting space.
24:12Here.
24:13Like this.
24:15And this.
24:16Planters with love.
24:32Today is the big reveal, but not for the client, for us.
24:37We're ready to strip the rammed earth forms off, and this is always my favorite part.
24:42We make a plan, we put the colorant in, we tamp the levels, but we don't actually know what it
24:47looks like until we strip all the forms.
24:49So the boys are just about done pulling pins.
24:51I'm going to jump in and help them, and then we're going to get to pull back the forms and
24:55see what everything looks like.
25:00We're going to get to see the wave that we created in there with what I'm going to call monochromatic
25:07colorant.
25:09All right, you pull those two.
25:10I got one on this side.
25:13Look at him like it's a present on Christmas morning.
25:16It is.
25:16This is it.
25:17Are you ready?
25:18Let's go.
25:20No.
25:27My.
25:28I love it.
25:29We got our colors.
25:30We did.
25:31Nice job, dude.
25:32Let's just take her apart.
25:33We'll pop all the end caps first.
25:35All right.
25:35Both sides.
25:36Hold on.
25:38Oh, sh.
25:39Dude.
25:40Look at that wave.
25:48All right.
25:50Last one.
25:55That's a cool outdoor kitchen.
25:57It's going to be awesome.
25:58And this granite countertop, it's going to be perfect.
26:11Today is a very crisp fall morning.
26:14It was in the 20s this morning when I woke up.
26:16I'm on my way up to Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen project.
26:19Dustin, David, and Ruby are already there.
26:22And it's going to be a big day.
26:24We've got the roof on.
26:25The rammed earth structure's in.
26:27It looks incredible.
26:31Levi and his team are cutting that gorgeous granite remnant to size.
26:35Dustin's prepping the rammed earth wall to accept the granite countertop.
26:39The next steps for us, we have a copper gutter going on the backside of the building.
26:44David actually brought some copper gutters that he'd had from a job site 20 years ago.
26:49He'd brought those for us to use on this project.
26:52And then we're going to get to dress this thing up and show it to Chad and Mandy.
26:57Have a beautiful day.
27:03Morning, fellas.
27:05Morning, Cap.
27:06So I'm trying to flatten out this rammed earth for the granite.
27:13Taking a grinder.
27:14I've got to have my levels here to make sure everything's just proper.
27:18Because when we set the slab on it, you can't teeter.
27:22So we're making it flat.
27:31What'd you do?
27:33That's a $150 coat.
27:39That was fantastic.
27:41It's time to get real.
27:43Hey.
27:43Hey.
27:44Hey, Dustin.
27:45Oh.
27:52Hey, do you know what David's going to teach me to solder today?
27:54It's definitely an art, dude.
27:55To do that is an art.
27:56I'm going to do a sample piece first.
27:58One that we can hide?
28:00One that we can hide.
28:02Soldering is the process of using molten metal like glue to join parts together.
28:07It creates a solid connection.
28:10I'm going to cut a little piece off of this gutter to practice on.
28:17No pressure.
28:18Just everyone's staring at me, do it.
28:24All right, David.
28:25Go easy on me.
28:25Oh, you're going to just be a whiz at this.
28:29Okay, so we're clamped.
28:30We're good.
28:30Now, the fun begins.
28:32The term we use is chase the flame.
28:35You're going to actually bring the flame away from this because you're not trying to heat the solder.
28:41This has to be warm enough to melt this.
28:44All right.
28:45Chase your flame.
28:48Slow down.
28:50Chase your flame.
28:53Don't get behind your solder.
28:56You're done.
28:57Don't go back.
28:57You can see where when you came back here, you left that rough.
29:01Yep.
29:01If you hadn't have come back, that wouldn't have happened.
29:03Gotcha.
29:03That's a mistake.
29:05Okay.
29:06So you get a B plus.
29:09That's way better than I got in high school on anything.
29:12Look, Dad.
29:12Look what I did.
29:16With the pieces falling into place for the roof and the gutters,
29:19it's time to make something to manage where the water will flow.
29:23Rather than traditional downspouts, we're going to do a rain chain.
29:28We'll have two chains, 94 inches.
29:33And that'll give us a little bit of extra to go all the way to the ground or sit in
29:37the big potted plant or anything that Mandy wants to change up there.
29:40So she'll have a little option for that.
29:46Before we can hang chains, we need to hang the gutters.
29:48In order to do that, we need some support brackets.
29:51So I'm headed back to Granny Flats to source some scrap steel to build some custom ones for the kitchen.
29:57David and I soldered the new copper gutter sections together.
30:01And now the challenge is to hang them from a custom bracket.
30:05They sell brackets online, but I need a bracket heavy enough to hang a rain chain from.
30:10I'm going to use some scrap steel that I have, but it's a thick enough gauge steel that I can
30:14cut these custom brackets,
30:16which will bolt to the end of the rafter tails, and that's what will support our new copper gutter.
30:22So we'll get those shaped up, cut out, we'll paint them black so they match the Shoshugi bond beams that
30:27we did.
30:29This gets mounted to a plate, which will get screwed to the rafter tail, and we'll drill our little holes
30:33in there.
30:34You've got to have gutters, by the way. Please have gutters. They're super helpful.
30:38You've got to have gutters.
30:40Cappy out.
30:43Those custom brackets are made to hold some serious weight, and they'll need to because Sprout picked out some beefy
30:49material
30:50that we're going to use for our rain chains.
30:53So this is a set of wheel chains off of Skitter.
30:58Skitter is a big articulated loader with a hydraulic grapple.
31:02Yeah, they're real big.
31:04But what I like about them is these crazy knuckles.
31:06So I'm going to work on separating these into two long strings that are 94 inches long.
31:15We'll hang these on our new gutter brackets.
31:18Then, when it rains, rainwater will trickle down these cool-looking things.
31:35One custom rain chain. I like it.
31:53We've got a big day planned for Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen today.
31:57Sort of all the finishing pieces are coming together in one swoop.
32:03Granite countertops are showing up this morning.
32:05It's the first time we get to see them put on the rammed earth.
32:07We're installing the copper gutters.
32:08We're installing the rain chains.
32:10Barbecue grill that we're going to put in there.
32:12And, yeah, it's all coming together.
32:18The donuts are still warm.
32:26Countertop boys beat me here.
32:28Not by much.
32:32Good morning, fellas.
32:34Good morning.
32:34I did. You made it here.
32:35You beat me.
32:36Oh, yes. Look at these.
32:39Hope you're feeling strong today.
32:41Since this granite slab weighs over 400 pounds,
32:44we're going to use this mini cart to get it close
32:46and the clamps to deadlift this thing over the rammed earth walls.
32:50One, two, three.
32:53I weigh just a little bit.
32:57Excellent.
33:00Those wheels are slicked, dude.
33:02Big, fat, wide wheels.
33:04All right.
33:04One, two, three.
33:07All right.
33:07We'll just lean.
33:08Come down just a little bit.
33:10Okay.
33:11Oh, no kidding.
33:12Give it.
33:12Slide.
33:16Excellent.
33:16Oh, my gosh, dude.
33:18How sharp is that?
33:19It's fun to see it in the daylight.
33:20Yeah.
33:20Makes a big difference in the way it looks.
33:23Oh, yeah.
33:25Moment of truth.
33:26If I measure right, it fits underneath here.
33:29With room to spare.
33:30Well, how about them apples?
33:32Awesome.
33:33All right.
33:33We'll get it finished up and glued down.
33:35Cool.
33:35I'll get my tools and get back to work on my end.
33:37Thanks, dude.
33:38Appreciate it, brother.
33:39The countertop really helps me imagine the final kitchen.
33:42You know what else would help with that?
33:44The fridge.
33:45I was trying to come up with a couple of refrigerator puns,
33:48and we settled on...
33:50This is cool.
33:53This is one of the things I enjoy about building things,
33:56especially custom things like this,
33:58is take a little time, put the conduit in,
34:00put an electrical outlet inside your cabinet,
34:03and no one will ever see the cord.
34:22We're getting really close on Chad and Mandy's outdoor kitchen.
34:26All the components are going in, looks great.
34:28But no outdoor kitchen would be complete without a really big barbecue.
34:33So that's what we're headed to get this morning.
34:40This is a ceramic barbecue grill.
34:42This thing is so heavy.
34:44They put it in in the pallet,
34:45but we have to hand unload this when we get up to Chad and Mandy's.
34:50And the cool thing about these, these are on wheels.
34:53They can put anywhere they want,
34:54so there's multiple configurations of the kitchen
34:56to be able to help just make it the most versatile we can.
35:08Okay, we've got the grill.
35:09Now we just need to place it.
35:12You and I are going to hand it to David and Josh.
35:15One, two, three.
35:18Oh yeah, just wait.
35:23Keep coming out a little bit more.
35:25Oh yeah.
35:27So you need to turn it?
35:28Okay.
35:31Nice.
35:32We'll flush that front corner up.
35:33Thank you, fellas.
35:34I love it.
35:35Very cool.
35:36All right, beautiful.
35:37Nice.
35:42But before Chad and Mandy can start grilling steaks outside,
35:46we have an essential item to help prepare them for the elements.
35:49First up are soldered copper gutters.
35:52Good-looking gutter, boys.
35:54You did a great job, Cap, for your first time soldering.
35:57Thanks for having the patience to teach me.
35:59You're easy to teach.
36:02We're going to just roll it in.
36:04And once you're set,
36:06and then we're going to roll the back in right behind the gutter apron.
36:10Woo-hoo-hoo!
36:11Very satisfying.
36:12What do you think, Cappy?
36:14It fits those brackets like a glove.
36:16Almost like we measured it.
36:18Dude, that is cool.
36:20Screw it down?
36:21Let's screw it down.
36:24Once these gutters are secured,
36:26the last piece to install are the custom rain chains.
36:31Dave had already cut holes in the copper to help the rain drain down the chains.
36:36We're just going to use this old chain link,
36:38and that's how that whole chain system will hang down from that.
36:56I love it.
36:59Water comes down, straight down the chain, into our big pot.
37:05Now that is a husky custom rain chain.
37:12It's always so satisfying to see the things that you plan get put together in real life.
37:21Just a few more tweaks,
37:22and we can reveal this one-of-a-kind pub-inspired outdoor hangout to Chad and Mandy.
37:37With our patio furniture and our fire pit in place,
37:39it's just about time we go grab Chad and Mandy.
37:44Well, after Sprout finishes practicing for her upcoming recital.
37:49How's your stuff going?
37:51Good!
37:51We're almost at the bow section, which is a bit of a tough piece to wrangle.
37:55The what section?
37:55The bowing at the end.
37:58What is this?
38:00It's gentle.
38:01It's very small.
38:04And smile.
38:06That's adorable.
38:08Okay, so we should actually show this thing, huh?
38:10Okay.
38:11This looks really sharp, kid.
38:13It does look really good.
38:15Alright, is everything where you want it?
38:16I have a few more things I'd like to zhuzh up while you go get them, if that works.
38:20Okay. You like to go get them?
38:21Yeah.
38:21Okay.
38:32Just going right over to the edge of the grass, no peeking.
38:36How long do we make them wait?
38:37Okay.
38:39All right.
38:40Open in three, two, one.
38:44Oh, my.
38:45Wow.
38:48Wow.
38:49This is fun.
38:50I can't believe it.
38:52Knocked it out of the park.
38:52It's just so gorgeous.
38:56Oh, my God.
38:58Wow.
39:00The silence is freaking me out there for a minute.
39:03Oh, my God.
39:05Oh, my God.
39:05Oh, my God.
39:05Oh, my God.
39:07Oh, my God.
39:07This looks so beautiful.
39:10Welcome to your new outdoor kitchen.
39:12Sprout, the boys, and I wanted to give you guys something that harken back to your pub days.
39:16So we came up with an area that you can cook, serve drinks, host parties, or just sit out by
39:22the fire.
39:24Oh, it looks beautiful.
39:27Wow.
39:28Go on up.
39:29It's yours.
39:32Oh, my gosh.
39:34Is it what you thought it was going to be?
39:36No.
39:37It's better.
39:38Yeah.
39:38So when we met, y'all wanted a place to have friends and family.
39:42You wanted a space to cook and a place to maybe have the band and hang out.
39:46So, of course, this outdoor kitchen comes with all of the essentials.
39:50A barbecue, a mini fridge, plus plenty of storage and counter space.
39:55Yeah, this is, uh, we'll be able to do that easily with this.
39:58This is a dream.
40:00Look at the countertops.
40:01Yeah, we decided to go with the granite countertop for the clean, natural look.
40:06And speaking of natural, the countertop sits on a structure we made using technique called rammed earth.
40:11It's limestone in Portland cement.
40:13You take a jackhammer that we pounded into form work with.
40:17Once it sets up, it's essentially limestone again.
40:19No weather problems whatsoever.
40:21Oh.
40:21It is beautiful.
40:22The coloring, I like natural colors, and it just blends in with the concrete, the countertops.
40:28Ties in nicely.
40:29And this, actually, this cabinet rolls out from underneath here.
40:33Oh, nice.
40:34So then it's matching, of course.
40:36So you have an electric outlet there.
40:38Oh, great.
40:38So now you can bring that over.
40:40You can have a blender.
40:40You can have a speaker or an amp for the musicians in the room.
40:44And then when you're done entertaining or you're not using it, it just tucks back away.
40:47Yeah?
40:47Yeah.
40:48And also, we wanted a barbecue that had multiple functions.
40:51You know, I want to be able to, you guys, if it's just the two of you and wanted to
40:53grill
40:54some steaks.
40:54But also, it's a smoker.
40:56You can bake in it.
40:57Oh, awesome.
40:58Things like that.
40:58Yeah.
40:59I love these.
41:00I could grow herbs in those, right?
41:03Yep.
41:03That's what those are for.
41:03Yeah, essentially.
41:04Chad, what are those planters?
41:09Kegs?
41:09Mm-hmm.
41:10Are they kegs?
41:10Yeah.
41:11What?
41:12Look at the beans.
41:14Those are dug fur timbers.
41:15And they're sealed using a blow torch in a technique called shoshugiban.
41:20It's a Japanese technique to preserve the wood.
41:23And rounding out this kitchen, we have custom copper gutters and rain chains repurposed
41:28from my boneyard that empty into pots.
41:31You can have culinary herbs in or flowers and things like that.
41:34Oh, we love the copper.
41:35That's unbelievable.
41:36It is beautiful.
41:38I just have a big smile on my face and I just sense this is so gorgeous.
41:42I love it.
41:43Well, sure, let these lovely people enjoy their kitchen and their evenings.
41:46Yes.
41:47Awesome.
41:47Well, thank you for your trust in doing this for you.
41:50Appreciate it.
41:50It was easy.
41:51It was easy.
41:52Appreciate it.
41:53Thank you, Alex.
41:54Awesome.
41:57Awesome.
41:57Very cool.
41:58Cappy and Alex, they knocked it out of the park.
42:00We asked for cohesiveness.
42:02We asked for simplicity.
42:04They hit everything and more.
42:05I love the design.
42:07That rammed earth.
42:08It was just beautiful.
42:09It reminded me of the hills.
42:11The design was really cool.
42:13I love the countertop.
42:14Yeah.
42:15Get the guitar out.
42:16Get the guitar out.
42:17Get some friends out.
42:17That's right.
42:18Get a piano out here.
42:20Got a stage.
42:23I can't wait to have our friends and family out.
42:25We'll have plenty of moments shared there.
42:28It's going to be a party.
42:43Oh my goodness.
42:44So we could sit down here.
42:45You can be up here.
42:46I can see now.
42:47Oh, yeah.
42:49Yeah.
