00:00Hey, guys.
00:01Well, hey, guys.
00:02I need their help to expand.
00:04So this is just like a one-stop shop for everything go.
00:07Yes.
00:09There's a building on the outside of town.
00:11It was a granary.
00:12Dude, yeah, that's perfect.
00:14This is big.
00:17In order to make it movable,
00:18we had to take the lid off of the building.
00:22Hold up!
00:23We're stuck on something.
00:25Good Lord, this thing is wise.
00:27My rear wheels are barely touching the ground.
00:30I don't like this.
00:35That is bananas.
00:37In three, two, one.
00:39Oh, my God.
00:43My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:45But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:48This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:50Everyone clear?
00:51I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:55Woo-hoo!
00:55But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:59Whoa.
00:59It looks so good in here.
01:02We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:05Whoa!
01:06I'm awake now.
01:07What if we did use a plane?
01:09Wait, really?
01:10All right, Alex.
01:10She's all yours.
01:12Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:14Oh, my God.
01:16It's so amazing.
01:18And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:20Love you.
01:20I love you.
01:21Oh, my God.
01:22Look at that.
01:22Look at that.
01:23Look at that.
01:23But the best part...
01:27...is we get to do it together.
01:38Hey, kid.
01:39Where are we off to today?
01:40Okay.
01:41So I found this really awesome lady.
01:43She's so cool.
01:44She has a stand at the farmer's market.
01:47But her main thing is goats.
01:48She makes, like, goat soap, goat candles, goat everything.
01:53What's her name?
01:53Her name is Shelby Lund.
01:55And she's like...
01:56We went to high school, Lila.
01:57Really?
01:59True story.
02:01Yeah, she's so cool.
02:02And she seems so nice.
02:03Yeah, Shelby's great.
02:04And she mentioned how she needs some sort of expansion on the farm.
02:09Like, she has a workshop, but it's in her garage.
02:12Okay.
02:12And it's just as the business is growing, the space isn't growing with her.
02:16She needs a designated space that's separate from her home.
02:20Yeah, I hear that.
02:27Oh, my gosh.
02:28This is awesome.
02:31Oh!
02:32Kathy!
02:32Oh, hey, guys!
02:33Hi!
02:34How's it going?
02:35Hi!
02:36Hi!
02:37Hi, darling.
02:38Oh, my goodness.
02:40Hi, Alex.
02:40This is awesome.
02:41It's so pretty.
02:42Do you just, like, wake up one morning with your coffee and be like, oh?
02:44We are living the dream.
02:46Yes.
02:46We have two boys.
02:48Odin is 13.
02:49Ulrich is 11.
02:51And this is our farm.
02:54And this is my La Mancha Norma.
02:57I can get about a gallon of milk from her a day.
03:00What?
03:01Holy camole!
03:02Yeah.
03:02She's a good milker.
03:03Your goat products sound amazing, just from the sustainability piece of it.
03:07Yeah.
03:07It's like as farm to table as you can get, right?
03:09It is.
03:09Yeah.
03:10It's all natural.
03:11It's all made by my hand.
03:12Yeah.
03:13So how long have you actually had the farm?
03:14We bought the property in 2016.
03:17Okay.
03:17And it wasn't a farm.
03:19It was just the house.
03:20Once we got out here and saw it, it was too good not to take.
03:23Yeah.
03:25Packed up the family and...
03:27Moved them out here.
03:28Moved them out here.
03:29I was doing real estate then.
03:32And 2019, my dad was diagnosed with stage four cancer.
03:36Oh, wow.
03:36So, yeah.
03:39Going through that really made me want to change my life.
03:44Something that just always resonated with me is my dad always lived in the moment.
03:53So, I knew I wanted to do what I wanted.
03:58So then we started getting goats and started building the farm.
04:01Okay.
04:01And so that's where I start to make the goat products.
04:04Alex said you guys talked about you wanting to expand.
04:07I'm really needing to expand my workshop.
04:11We're here to have Cappy and Alex help us with a new building.
04:18Where I make all my skin products is just too small.
04:22And I need their help to expand.
04:25So this is a big place.
04:27What are you thinking?
04:27Well, we're kind of thinking over in that area.
04:31Like the way you come in?
04:32Yep.
04:32Okay.
04:33So if we want to walk over there, I can show that to you guys.
04:36I also need somewhere to showcase all my products.
04:41You know, I get calls all the time of people wanting to come pick it up here.
04:45They come to my shop and it's kind of embarrassing because it's just a mess in there.
04:50So how many kinds of animals do you have?
04:52Well, we have around seven to eight different animals.
04:56Ducks, chickens, horses, goats, a donkey named Gus.
05:01There's a donkey?
05:02There's a miniature donkey, yes.
05:04A donkey named Gus.
05:05No way.
05:05He is so fun.
05:08And then here's kind of where I guess we're thinking of having the building put.
05:14So this is just like a one-stop shop for everything goats, right?
05:17Yes.
05:18And also storage.
05:19Like my soaps are quite the process.
05:22It takes about eight weeks to make just one bar because the way I do it is hundreds of years
05:27old.
05:27And so I need a lot of space for them to sit and cure.
05:32Do they need to be in a cold space, in a warm space?
05:36Room temperature to a little bit cooler would be perfect.
05:39Now in terms of like style, what do you like?
05:42Definitely I love the French country look.
05:45Okay.
05:46Like a lot of exposed wood.
05:47Yeah.
05:48And I love antiques anyway.
05:49I love the history.
05:50Gosh, you got all the questions, kid.
05:51I don't know if I have any.
05:52I mean, I think I'm good because I have all sorts of ideas.
05:55Awesome.
05:56We'll go back and talk about the plan.
05:59Love it.
06:00Okay.
06:00Love it.
06:02So excited to have you guys.
06:04Thanks, Cap.
06:04You bet.
06:09Well, that was super fun.
06:11Oh my gosh.
06:12So much fun.
06:13When we were hearing about all the things that she works with, it really sounds like we're
06:17almost making like an apothecary, like somewhere that sells natural products.
06:21Right?
06:22I like that.
06:23The goat apothecary.
06:24In terms of structure, obviously we love to repurpose things.
06:29Well, I thought of it while she was talking.
06:31There was a farm on the outside of town.
06:34There's a building that still sits there.
06:36It's got like a rusty silver tin roof.
06:38Dude.
06:39Yeah, that's perfect.
06:40Yeah.
06:41What I like about it is let's start the project with something that's antique.
06:44Yeah.
06:45So I know the guy who owns it.
06:46I can give him a call.
06:47Yeah, 100%.
06:53Hey there.
06:53How's it going, boss?
06:55Good.
06:55Sprout and I, we just left a client's house.
06:58And we're trying to figure out some sort of workshop slash retail space.
07:04Awesome.
07:04You guys have that little white building.
07:08That was from the old Meyers property.
07:12Old, old settlers in the area.
07:15And when we bought that property, everything got torn down.
07:19Except that little greenery building.
07:21Gosh, if you have somebody that would love it and use it, we'd sure be open to that.
07:26Rick, would you be open to Sprout and I popping in and taking a look at it?
07:30That would be great.
07:31Thanks, partner.
07:31Appreciate it.
07:32Have an awesome day.
07:33Bye-bye.
07:34You want to pop by and check it out on the way home?
07:35Heck yeah.
07:36Cool.
07:41There she is.
07:43There she is.
07:48This is big.
07:50I like the size of it.
07:51This siding has seen much better days.
07:55Yeah, this wood definitely needs to go.
07:57What do you think?
07:58It's got to be turn of the century.
08:00I bet it's early 1900s.
08:01Yeah.
08:02So Rick said it was a granary.
08:04Can you imagine you grew grain and then had a dedicated building to store it to feed your
08:09animals for the rest of the year?
08:11Crazy.
08:12We just go to the mill and buy big sacks of it and they give it to us.
08:16Ooh.
08:18Looks pretty solid.
08:20Oh, I think all the walls got to go on the inside.
08:23Mm-hmm.
08:23I would like to salvage the wood though.
08:25It's good.
08:26Like...
08:27Mm-hmm.
08:28I'd keep the walls in place while it's moved so the structure holds together.
08:34Well, what do you think?
08:35I really like it.
08:37I definitely want to redo the doors and windows just because a French cottage is very light.
08:42It's very airy.
08:43Awesome.
08:44Our plan for Shelby's dream workspace is to transform this antique granary into a unique,
08:50one-stop shop for all things goat.
08:53First, we'll move the structure to Shelby's farm, then swap out the old exterior siding
08:58and remove the interior walls to make the building feel bright and welcoming.
09:03We'll give Shelby space to both craft her handmade products and showcase them in style.
09:07A boiler will keep the temperature consistent over long South Dakota winters and will create an eye-catching sign to
09:15draw folks in.
09:16The challenge is going to be moving the old granary all the way to Shelby's farm without damaging it,
09:21and then making sure the final space checks all the boxes on Shelby's wish list.
09:27And then I think the next question is, how do we move it?
09:31It's really tall.
09:33Let me think about that.
09:34I don't know the legal height limit on the freeway, but I'm pretty sure this exceeds it.
09:38It's under this height.
09:41Before we can give the granary a new home, we've got to make sure there's a rock-solid place to
09:46plant it.
09:47And that starts with a new foundation.
09:50First step, Tanner's digging out the footprint.
09:53Next, some of Shelby's friends help lay out the concrete forms.
09:56We're including a crawl space for pipes and wiring and a bonus area out back.
10:01It'll be perfect for an outdoor deck, but even better if Shelby decides to expand her growing business down the
10:07line.
10:09We're pouring our concrete into insulated concrete forms that'll provide a proper frost-protected foundation.
10:17Finally, the site is ready for the granary.
10:20But now comes the tricky part, actually getting the granary to the site.
10:24The challenge is, the building itself is 18 feet tall.
10:28By the time I put it on my three-foot-tall trailer, I can't drive down the road with that.
10:33It'll put me about seven feet over the legal height limit of 14 feet.
10:38So, in order to make it moveable...
10:44We're cutting off every nail that holds the roof down.
10:47And today, we're gonna pick the roof off of the building and transport each section on two different trailers.
10:54Good, isn't it?
10:55The next step is its journey west.
10:58We're hauling this wide load 11 miles.
11:01First down a section of interstate, and then down a bumpy country road.
11:08So, we made these custom plates that bolt to the building.
11:12And this hole, or this picking eye on this custom bracket, is gonna allow the chain to come up past
11:19this.
11:19We don't want to damage the roof or any of the roof structure.
11:23So, we have to pick this outboard of the roof.
11:27I also fabricated a beam that extends over the length of the roof.
11:33And welded mounts to it for chains that attach to the roof brackets.
11:43Cappy, I reckon this roof weighs about 6,000 pounds.
11:47Last time we picked something that was heavy, your welds didn't hold.
11:54Well, that's not ideal.
11:56It's gonna be fine.
11:59I bet you a super burrito manadero
12:02that my welds hold.
12:05Yeah, with everything.
12:06Yeah, yeah, but that means when they hold,
12:08you have to buy me the same thing.
12:09Uh-huh. All right.
12:13Get one weld, drop a big tank.
12:18You're on that corner, I'm on this corner.
12:19Okay. Going up!
12:22All jokes aside,
12:24Watch those plates.
12:25If we drop this old granary, it won't bounce.
12:28It'll bust open like a sad pile of rustic firewood.
12:32It tends to go out a little bit.
12:36And now that the pressure's really on,
12:38it's time to raise the roof.
12:49Oh, oh, oh.
12:51Hold up!
12:52We're stuck on something!
13:01Hold up!
13:05Looks like we're hung up on the front.
13:11And I got a board on the inside connected to the rafters.
13:17That much tension could break my weld,
13:20but at this point, I gotta go for it.
13:22I think if you keep pulling straight up,
13:25it'll come loose.
13:33I'm clear, I'm up!
13:35I'm clear.
13:35Nice job, boys.
13:40Go ahead and start backing up nice and easy.
13:53Good lord, this thing is wide.
13:57Oh, let's go down real easy.
13:59Down?
14:00Down.
14:06Down.
14:07Okay.
14:09That went awesome.
14:11What do you know?
14:12Looks like my weld's held up.
14:14And Dustin owes me a burrito.
14:18Okay.
14:21The next step for us is to pick the actual building up.
14:26So in order to do that, it's so wide and heavy,
14:30I bet it's close to 10,000 pounds.
14:33We're using two telehandlers to pick it up.
14:38And the margin for error here is razor thin.
14:42Whoa!
14:43You're gonna roll that way, you're gonna roll that way.
14:46If the machines aren't synced perfectly,
14:48if the weight shifts unevenly,
14:50that means splintering timbers, warped walls,
14:53or a building that'll never sit square again.
14:56How's it look?
14:57I look pretty good.
14:58Okay.
15:02Now we'll back in my trailer
15:04and turn this building into a temporary mobile home.
15:08Am I close?
15:09You're close.
15:14Touchdown!
15:15All right.
15:17So we should be just under our legal height.
15:21We're allowed 14.
15:23We're 12.8.
15:24We're gonna be real careful, go nice and slow.
15:27But she's stable and we'll get her strapped down
15:29and we're gonna head up the road.
15:3911 miles doesn't seem far,
15:41but when you're hauling a historic century-old structure
15:44that you've just sliced in half to the edge of the Wyoming border,
15:47you have to take things slow.
15:49How you feeling, Dustin?
15:52Really wide.
15:53Copy that.
15:54Yeah, we'll just ride the right lane the best we can
15:57and just take her easy.
16:02Thank goodness I'm not on granary moving day.
16:05That sounds really stressful.
16:07Instead, I'm focusing on the design features
16:09that'll help make Shelby's business stand out.
16:12I'm meeting with Tim, a local sign maker.
16:16I drive by a lot of Tim's signs every day.
16:20He would be the perfect person to make it for her
16:22because he makes everything in-house and is local
16:26and loves to do stuff around town
16:27and that's exactly what she does.
16:36Hi.
16:36Hello.
16:37We spoke a little bit on the phone
16:39in regards to my client Shelby Lund.
16:41We're making her a workshop and a storefront on her farm
16:45in order for her to sell soaps and candles
16:49and all sorts of things out of the milk from her goats.
16:52So what name will appear on the sign?
16:55Lund Valley Farm.
16:57So this is her current standing logo.
17:00Okay.
17:00Would you be interested in partaking in the production process?
17:04Absolutely, yes.
17:05I do paint, but I've never done something on this scale,
17:07so I'd love to learn something.
17:09That's good. Excellent.
17:11All right.
17:11I think that's all I need to know.
17:13Okay.
17:13So you'll hear from me soon.
17:14Thank you. Bye.
17:17His shop is so horrible.
17:27So we made it off the interstate.
17:29I'm glad that portion is done,
17:30but now we're on the dirt road on the way to Shelby's house.
17:37I'm trying not to take out any mailboxes either.
17:47Come right a little bit with the wheels.
17:50Slow is smooth.
17:52Smooth is fast.
17:53We're approaching Shelby's farm.
17:58Stop it right here, fellas.
18:01The next challenge is threading this wide load through Shelby's gate
18:05without damaging the gate or the granary.
18:09So we're right at 19 wide.
18:13I'm 18 wide.
18:14Okay, so I'm 16.
18:16But we need to get the angle of our turn just right.
18:19If we come in too steep or too shallow,
18:22we're going to do some damage.
18:23The two things we're going to want to watch
18:25is this communications box right on the corner
18:27and the birdhouses.
18:28Those are her father made those birdhouses.
18:30Let's do it.
18:33Here I go.
18:35How's my front tire?
18:36You can go more.
18:39Okay, now.
18:40Now turn it.
18:44It's tight.
18:48All right, buddy.
18:49You made it to the gate.
18:51That was the easy part.
18:52Now comes the nail-biter.
18:55I'm a little tighter than that.
18:56I think you are going to be tighter than that.
19:00The roof is two feet wider.
19:02So if Dustin drifts even a little bit,
19:05we might be in for some unplanned renovations.
19:09Hard left.
19:10Oh, you got to go that way a bunch.
19:15Yeah, I'm going to hit.
19:17Yeah, you're going to hit me.
19:24You can come this way a little bit.
19:27Go real slow.
19:28Real, real slow.
19:30Jeez, look at this.
19:31This is how much space he's got.
19:35I'm good.
19:36I'm clear on my side.
19:40Well done, boys.
19:42Dude.
19:43Six.
19:45Oh, I had six on my side.
19:47That's amazing.
19:48We made it through.
19:49Nothing touched.
19:49No birdhouses.
19:50No gates.
19:51Anything.
19:55Let's get it on the foundation.
19:59We have to pick up the building.
20:01I have to pull the trailer out from underneath it.
20:05And Ruby has to extend while Dustin retracts
20:10and moves the building over and sets it down.
20:20Why don't you put a little pressure on it?
20:27So it's right at your tipping weight.
20:29I was watching your tires.
20:31I thought so.
20:32Yeah.
20:32So we'll be real careful with that.
20:35This makes me nervous.
20:37My rear wheels are barely touching the ground right now.
20:41Because when you're boomed out this far with 10,000 pounds,
20:45you can teeter easy.
20:48If the telehandler tips,
20:50not only will the granary get smashed,
20:53but we'll also crack the foundation it's sitting on
20:55and put the telehandler boom out of commission.
20:58Tipping is not encouraged.
21:00I don't like this.
21:05Okay, Ruby, you drive forward and Dustin, start retracting.
21:15Okay, let's lower it.
21:16Okay, both at the same time.
21:19I wish I can tell you that she drops right into place,
21:22but the reality is it goes something like this.
21:25Still gotta go this way eight inches.
21:27Okay, why don't you back out.
21:28Go ahead and go up.
21:29So you're gonna retract and you're gonna extend.
21:31We're really close.
21:32That way.
21:32Okay, and then you flop to that corner.
21:33Okay, you go down.
21:34That's a lot of mental gymnastics today.
21:36I'm gonna have you come to this corner.
21:37So close.
21:38You're gonna bump to that corner.
21:40Stand by.
21:40My brain hurts.
21:41Right?
21:42No problem.
21:43Okay.
21:44Retract.
21:47It's beautiful, boys.
21:48Beautiful.
21:49And just like that, 100-year-old building, brand new home.
21:56So the last piece of this puzzle is putting the lid back on our pot.
22:00But this is definitely a heavy, heavy lid.
22:05Shoo daddy.
22:07This is really hard to line up,
22:08because it has to be square to the building
22:10and front and back, left and right.
22:12It's hard when everyone's tired.
22:14We've been up since four this morning.
22:16Just watch your fingers and your head.
22:18It's a big day.
22:22All right, we're down.
22:23Yo, Tiffo.
22:25Nice driving, amigo.
22:38So big day yesterday.
22:40We got the apothecary all the way down to Shelby's Farm.
22:43Today we're kicking off the renovation,
22:45starting with stripping off the old exterior siding.
22:47100-plus years of South Dakota weather have really taken its toll.
22:52We're also removing the inside walls,
22:54but luckily that wood's in good shape.
22:55And Sprout wants to save it for Shelby.
22:58I'm just excited that we can take this piece of history
23:01that has been around Spearfish for so long
23:03and repurpose it into this thing for Shelby and Derek.
23:06Turns out I'm not the only one who had an eye for this old granary.
23:09Some neighbors are just as fired up about saving the slice of history
23:13than showed up to lend a hand.
23:15Morning, fellas.
23:16Clark and Jackson, thanks for coming.
23:18So we're going to go ahead and strip all the exterior siding off.
23:21Alex did want us to save two good boards from the outside
23:25for a project she's working on for Shelby.
23:26The inside, however, we want to repurpose all that big fat one-by
23:31into some shelves for Shelby's stuff.
23:33I'm going to go get some tools.
23:40All right.
23:45It's easy.
23:48Oh, this is going to be easy.
23:50We're going to be done by noon.
23:52You know, we grew up across the creek in Spearfish from this building.
23:56So it's really nice to be able to help Cappy Sprout give this another life.
24:01Very cool.
24:05While Dustin and David tackle the inside walls, Sprout checks on the condition of the boards
24:10and finds a surprise.
24:13Oh, my gosh.
24:15There's writing on here.
24:181906.
24:20So this board is over, like, 120 years old.
24:24Wow.
24:28It doesn't look like much now, but I can see the goat apothecary is shaping up to be something
24:33really special.
24:35Just give me a few more days.
24:48I've got an idea to make this build extra special for Shelby.
24:52But I need Derek's help.
24:54Hello.
24:55Hey, Alex.
24:56How are you?
24:57Doing good.
24:58How are you?
24:58Good.
24:59I was just wondering if I could get some pictures from you of Shelby and her dad.
25:03I'm hoping that I can sneak them in the project somewhere.
25:06Absolutely.
25:07Yeah.
25:08We have a ton of them I could round up.
25:10She'd love that.
25:10That'd be great.
25:11Awesome.
25:12Well, I don't want her to see me, so I should jet.
25:15All right.
25:16Thanks, Alex.
25:25I'm at the sign shop with Tim, and he has one more step that he wants some help with,
25:31so I'm excited to learn something new.
25:35Hello.
25:36Hi, Alex.
25:38Oh, is this our sign?
25:40Here it is.
25:41It looks so good.
25:44So I enhanced some of it, made the letters a little bit bolder.
25:47Mm-hmm.
25:47I added full color on it.
25:48The edges of the letters are gilded in 23-carat gold leaf.
25:52Oh, wow.
25:52Which is what you're going to be doing on the ribbon.
25:55Oh, cool.
25:56You made a ribbon sign, too.
25:58I'm excited.
25:59Let's go over here, and I'll explain a little bit about gold leaf to you.
26:03Okay.
26:03I want you to hold this and rub it between your fingers.
26:06Oh, wow.
26:07It's so fragile.
26:08Just get a handful.
26:09Yeah.
26:10It's three millionths of an inch thick.
26:12It just disappears.
26:13Yeah, and then it's gone.
26:14All right.
26:14Now we're ready to start gilding, so why don't you bring your stool over?
26:21While Sprout's working on the artistic touches, I'm delivering a load of lumber so we can build
26:26the deck behind Shelby's new workshop.
26:28Hey, Gus.
26:30What's up, boys?
26:31I brought you some lumber.
26:33Hey.
26:33Good morning.
26:34Sweet.
26:35That's perfect timing.
26:36It's going to be the cutest little deck ever.
26:38First step to making a cute little deck, hauling some seriously heavy beams.
26:44Good thing my crew's got clever ideas.
26:46A big piece of machinery that makes us look strong.
26:49Why don't you go get the tally, and we'll just slide it onto the tally.
26:52We can slide it on the tally, too.
26:53I like that.
26:54This is a technique that's been used.
26:56The Egyptians used it.
26:57When you see all the artifacts, they're gilded in gold leaf.
27:00This is the very same thing that we're doing right now.
27:05We're off and running, building the deck.
27:08When I pull this up, the gold will only stick to where I've got glue painted.
27:17So go ahead and pull a sheet off of there, and do just what I did.
27:21And lift your sheet up.
27:22Terrific.
27:24Very good.
27:25That's fabulous.
27:26Okay.
27:27Here's where Sprouts got me beat.
27:30She can handle both power tools and fine design detail.
27:35So I stick to what I know.
27:37Making the pieces fit together.
27:39Because when it comes to the sparkle, that's all her.
27:43Terrific.
27:44I'm gonna grab you another book, and we'll keep going.
27:46Only 11 more letters to go.
28:03Right there.
28:04So we just picked up our custom door that we had made for Shelby and Derek's project.
28:09Spray-flam insulation's done.
28:11Electricians are done.
28:13Siding gets delivered today.
28:15Yeah, here in the next day or so, we'll be ready for paint.
28:19But I don't want Shelby and Derek seeing our progress and spoiling the surprise.
28:23So I managed to convince them to spend a few days kicking back at our property at Shortgrass for a
28:28well-deserved getaway.
28:32Hey, chickens.
28:35Here, I have food.
28:37But Shelby would only leave her animals if Alex stepped in to take care of them.
28:44Building all sheeted up.
28:46Looking good.
28:47Oh, yeah.
28:49First item on the to-do list?
28:51Install the door.
28:53This beauty comes with side lights.
28:55These skinny little windows on each side of the door, which will add a little extra light into the space.
29:04Oh, nice.
29:05So I like how it looks.
29:06I like it's a little wider.
29:07And then these aren't too overbearing.
29:09Like, they're nice, clean glass.
29:10We didn't want to do any patterned glass.
29:12That is a sharp-looking door.
29:13I can see that sign now.
29:15London Valley Farm.
29:17Cool.
29:21Next step is siding.
29:23So we went with a traditional look.
29:25This stuff is tough as nails.
29:27It should have no problem standing up to our crazy South Dakota weather.
29:31This is actually 70% fly ash.
29:34It's basically a byproduct from the mining industry.
29:37So they take that, they mix it with a polymer glue, press it together, and this wood grain texture is
29:42actually embossed in the wood.
29:44Now, it has a different finish on each side, but I don't know which side Sprout wants out.
29:54Hello?
29:55Quick question for you.
29:56The siding came this morning.
29:57Do you want a smooth side, or do you want a wood-textured side?
30:02I want wood-textured side out just because of, like, the overall aesthetic of the build.
30:08Cool.
30:09Let's do that.
30:09Bye. Love you.
30:10Love you.
30:14Hello.
30:15Hey, how are you, Sprout?
30:16Good.
30:16Nice to see you again.
30:17It's nice to see you again.
30:18I hear you got some boards for us.
30:20Yes.
30:20So, I was hoping that we could turn them into some pieces I could use for some shelving.
30:25Oh, cool.
30:26Yeah, they're in good shape.
30:27There are a few with some nails in them.
30:29We'll get those pulled out, no problem.
30:30Okay.
30:31So, are you wanting any of them cut, or just surfaced?
30:33Just surfaced.
30:37Thank you so much.
30:56So, Ruby and I were working on siding the front of the apothecary building.
31:03When you install siding, if you're going to do it yourself, every three or four courses,
31:06throw a level on it and make sure you're not doing this.
31:10Because over the course of a 16-foot-tall building, if you're off a sixteenth of an inch over that
31:17far,
31:18literally it starts to do this.
31:19And you get up to the top and your pieces are visibly slanted.
31:22It's not good.
31:24Well, we're looking good on that.
31:27Oh, there's Dustin.
31:29Yeah, I think let's back him right up to the deck.
31:35Dustin's worked his fair share of old floors, and today he brought all his tools to give Shelby's boards a
31:41proper facelift.
31:42I'm a one-man job, and I love it.
31:46We're sanding off a century's worth of grain and grime, so this building can start a fresh chapter in its
31:52old story.
31:57I'm going to leave a little character in it.
32:01I'm not going to sand all the way, but it'll look really nice.
32:04It'll look fairly new.
32:08Okay.
32:25Ooh, bro.
32:28Hey.
32:30Holy crap!
32:32That's just two cuts.
32:33That is bananas that that was what was underneath it.
32:37Oh, yeah.
32:38It's not even the same room.
32:40This is so cool, dude.
32:42You've been working hard, brother.
32:43Take a break before you finish up.
32:44Yep.
32:45Amazing.
32:56Oh, we got chip.
33:04Is that good?
33:06You like chips, huh?
33:16I'm getting to the build site a little bit early to take care of Shelby's farm animals.
33:20Isn't that crazy?
33:21While Shelby and Derek have a little bit of relaxation time at Shortgrass.
33:25I have a long list of things I have to make sure are done.
33:28I need to feed the goats.
33:32Hello.
33:34Oh, my.
33:35No, that's not happening right now.
33:40Oh, that got on everyone's head.
33:44Make sure that they have enough water.
33:48Make sure the horses are brushed.
33:50Oh, hi.
33:53It sure is beautiful out here, but it smells a bit stronger than I thought it would.
34:02I need to feed the chickens.
34:06Hi.
34:07Oh, hi, ducks.
34:08I need to let the puppies out.
34:10Oh, my gosh.
34:11Oh, my gosh.
34:12Oh, my gosh.
34:12There's so many.
34:15Hi.
34:16Oh, my God.
34:18Feed Gus.
34:20There you go.
34:21Such a diva.
34:22Mm-hmm.
34:23But that's okay.
34:24Cappy is, too.
34:26Y'all poop a lot.
34:28I promise.
34:28It's not food.
34:29Wow.
34:30I really have a new appreciation for what Shelby does every day.
34:33It's a lot of hard work.
34:37What?
34:39Time to finish transforming this granary into a one-of-a-kind workshop and bring Shelby
34:44back home where she belongs.
34:46The inside walls are getting a coat of whitewash, which will give them a classic French sort
34:51of farmhouse charm.
34:52Whoo.
34:53Smells like progress.
34:54Yeah.
34:55Oh, dude, that looks so good.
34:57Yeah.
34:57It brightens it up quite a bit.
34:59It does.
34:59Which is great.
35:00I think she's gonna love it.
35:01Awesome.
35:01Sweet.
35:02Thanks, dude.
35:02Appreciate it.
35:04The whitewash dries in no time, and David jumps right into the install of the custom shelves
35:09Sprout designed.
35:17So Alex wanted to put shelves in here from the salvaged wall we took out.
35:23She took them, cleaned them up, finished them, brought them back, and she wants me to install
35:28them in here.
35:34She has great vision.
35:36Shelby said that the temperature is extra important for making her products.
35:40So we're also installing a wood-burning boiler that'll pump warm water through the radiators
35:45in the apothecary during the snowy winter months.
35:49Real slow.
35:50Okay.
35:51Perfect.
35:51They already burned wood on the property.
35:53They have wood stoves.
35:54This is just an easy transition to have a high-tech unit that they can feed once a day that'll
36:01keep consistent heat in Shelby's workspace and her shop.
36:04This is gonna be a game-changer for them.
36:11Now for the last piece of the puzzle.
36:14Shelby told us that her dad was the inspiration behind starting this farm and her business.
36:20So we need to make a cut here, chop this guy off.
36:26I know how strong that bond can be.
36:31Since her dad is no longer here, I wanted to turn this old exterior siding into a special
36:36surprise for Shelby.
36:37To honor him and to keep his spirit close.
36:42Okay.
36:43Let's go, puppy!
36:55It's a gorgeous day in our little corner of South Dakota.
36:59And after getting all the final bits and pieces into place, it's time to bring Shelby and Derek
37:03back to the space that we've poured all our love into.
37:08I'm so excited.
37:09It looks so good in here.
37:10I think you knocked it out of the park on this one.
37:12This is very cool.
37:13Thanks.
37:14Awesome.
37:15I think I hear their truck.
37:16All right.
37:17Well, I'm ready if you're good to go and get Shelby and Derek.
37:20I know.
37:21Thanks, Carol.
37:25All right.
37:25No peeking.
37:27Just keep your eyes down.
37:29Perfect.
37:31So excited.
37:33Can't hardly take it.
37:42Okay.
37:43How are we feeling?
37:44Anxious.
37:45Nervous.
37:45Anxious, nervous.
37:47Kind of like I'm going to throw up.
37:48I'm so excited.
37:50Well, don't do that.
37:51There's no throwing up.
37:53All right.
37:53Should we put them out of their misery and let them turn around and see?
37:55Yes.
37:56Okay.
37:57In three, two, one.
38:01Oh, my God.
38:03Wow.
38:04Wow.
38:05That is so beautiful.
38:07Oh, my God.
38:08That is awesome.
38:10That looks so good, guys.
38:13Yeah, so the building itself had a former life.
38:16We found writing inside the building from 1906 on some of the boards inside.
38:21So it's 120 years old.
38:22It was a granary.
38:23And it was part of a farm on the west side of Spearfish.
38:26So we ended up moving it down the road.
38:28And then we set her down on its new home.
38:30Awesome.
38:31It's so heartwarming that the history of Spearfish is still going to continue on on our property.
38:38Where did you get the sign?
38:41I worked with a sign maker in town.
38:43And we worked with the original design on the soaps and all of your products.
38:48So it still has that same look.
38:49Yeah.
38:50It's perfect.
38:51This sign that's on the building is bigger and so eye-catching compared to the sign that I have.
39:00It's definitely a scale up.
39:01Yeah.
39:02Pops a little more.
39:03Yeah.
39:04All right.
39:05Would you like to head inside?
39:06Yes, we would.
39:07Let's do it.
39:07Go for it.
39:07After you.
39:08It's all you.
39:09Oh my gosh.
39:10Here we go.
39:13Oh my god.
39:14Oh my god.
39:16Oh my god.
39:17It's beautiful.
39:19Wow.
39:22Oh my god.
39:23Everything looks so perfect.
39:26Chills.
39:28Oh my goodness.
39:29Oh my goodness.
39:29It just, it all looks so good.
39:32Wow.
39:36It's so perfect guys.
39:40I mean.
39:42Oh good.
39:43Awesome.
39:46I'm glad you like it.
39:47Yeah.
39:48Oh, this is so pretty.
39:51When I walked in, one of the first things I noticed was a picture of my dad and I.
39:58I don't want to cry, but yeah, it was beautiful.
40:02That's a great picture.
40:05I actually made that frame from the original siding on the building.
40:08It's just a little surprise for you both.
40:10I really wanted the inside to feel like an elegant antique.
40:15And so in order to do that, we left most of the original walls.
40:19So these are the real like interior walls that we just whitewashed.
40:23And then in terms of separation, it's not like a rope that says don't come past you.
40:30This is for employees only, but it's a visual separation from the storefront to the workshop.
40:38Yeah.
40:38It's just so perfect.
40:40We had the floors refinished.
40:42We put in an air conditioner and we also installed an exterior wood boiler.
40:46So you have hydronic heat in here to keep everything nice and warm in the wintertime.
40:51That's amazing.
40:52Very cool.
40:52Yeah.
40:53There's a lot of steps involved to take it from the original granary and turn it into this.
40:59Goat apothecary.
41:01The goat apothecary.
41:03Perfect.
41:03Yeah.
41:04It is amazing.
41:05Well, to say thank you and for something special.
41:09Sprout, I made you your own goat soap.
41:12What?
41:13Yes.
41:14Sprout's goat soap.
41:15And that's going to be your original one for Lund Valley Farm.
41:19Oh, I love it.
41:20Thank you so much.
41:21Sprout goat soap.
41:21That's so cool.
41:22Oh my gosh.
41:23And then for you, Cappy.
41:27Yeah.
41:28Isn't that beautiful?
41:29It has your face on it, so.
41:31Oh my gosh.
41:34Cappy's noggin' nectar.
41:35That's going to do wonders.
41:36No kidding.
41:37And you can also use it with your beard oil.
41:40It's a win-win all around.
41:42I love it.
41:43Yeah.
41:43We'll let you guys get back to it.
41:44Thank you for this very much.
41:45Thank you guys.
41:46Appreciate it.
41:47Thank you so much.
41:49You guys are.
41:50Thank you, Sprout.
41:51You guys are awesome.
41:52So amazing.
41:53Thanks, guys.
41:54Thanks.
41:55When people come onto the property and come to the shop, I just want them to have the whole
42:00experience of the farm.
42:02And the fact Alex and Cappy did capture that, they stepped up and it's amazing.
42:09In this building, every board, every shelf, it all has a story.
42:14And it's part of our history here.
42:17And so we just get to add on to that chapter and continue and make new memories.
42:23And it's going to be wonderful.
42:31I'll hand over a soap and you have to figure out what the scent is.
42:38Cinnamon oatmeal.
42:39It's just vanilla, but okay.
42:42This is like a favorite one of mine.
42:44Slushies?
42:45No.
42:46After the rain.
42:47Good lord.
42:48All right.
42:49Man musk.
42:49So let's go.
42:51Don't call it that.
42:52Topacco and beelief.
42:53That's pretty close.
42:54Haha
42:54Hehehehe.
42:55T
42:56Hehehehhthhthhthaaaaah,
