00:13Venezuela's acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, said Thursday that her country was ready for a long-term energy partnership with the
00:19United States.
00:24The Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into possible links between the pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and Brazil.
00:37In Greece, around 80 tractors belonging to the Panhellenic Committee of Blocks arrived at Sintagma Square to protest against high
00:45electricity and fuel costs.
00:54Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Pablo Micheliche from the Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:00We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:13Venezuela's acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, said Thursday that her country was ready for a long-term energy partnership with the
01:20United States.
01:21During an interview to the U.S. TV network NBC, the Venezuelan leader rapped her government's commitment to building a
01:28solid economy and an accruing-edge energy sector, setting out a roadmap focused on international cooperation and the well-being
01:35of the Venezuelan people.
01:36The president also emphasized that Venezuela is going through a historic moment of strategic positioning, underlining that the country is
01:44becoming once again an indispensable player in the energy security of the hemisphere and the world.
01:49She also confirmed that she has received a formal invitation to visit the United States, which is a plan once
01:57the basis for mutual cooperation is consolidated.
02:01She also reiterated that Nicolás Maduro remains the legitimate president of the country.
02:11Yes, without a doubt, President Nicolás Maduro is the legitimate president of Venezuela. Both President Maduro and First Lady Celia
02:18Flores are innocent.
02:21I'm Venezuela's acting president, Delsi Rodriguez, called on the country's youth to engage in dialogue for peaceful coexistence and ideological
02:29diversity.
02:34Today, I was very happy because I saw youth marches everywhere. I also saw this, though, at a march at
02:42the UCB at my university, and I was very satisfied to see that they were able to go from the
02:48door of the clinic to the door of the Tres Gracias.
02:54And I will tell you why I'm so happy. In the fourth Republic, if we students raised a finger, they
03:01shut us down. And I am very pleased that the diverse youth, the plural youth can express themselves in our
03:07country, can express themselves in Venezuela.
03:10And I also want to invite all the youth students' workers. I want throughout youth volunteering in the democratic coexistence
03:23and peace program so that from our differences, from our divergences, from our political and ideological plurality,
03:35We can find our youth, but I do aspire for Venezuelan youth to love deeply, to love Venezuela deeply, to
03:43love it deeply and to feel proud of the history of our liberators.
03:50This Friday, Venezuela received a shipment of 6,000 kilograms of medical supplies from the United States intended to strengthen
03:57the country's public health system.
03:59A diplomatic representative of Venezuela to the United States, Felix Plasencia, received the shipment at Simon Bolivar International Airport in
04:06Maiketia.
04:07Plasencia emphasized that this action is part of the Venezuelan government's effort to strengthen the outpatient network throughout the country
04:15and provide free, quality service.
04:17For her part, the U.S. charge, the third in Venezuela, Laura Dogu, reported that this is the first shipment
04:25of medicines to arrive in the country and announced that more medical supplies will be received in the coming days.
04:31Venezuela and the United States have set out to advance an agenda to address issues of bilateral interest through diplomatic
04:39dialogue and on the basis of mutual respect and international law.
04:48When we move on to other topics, amid the complex energy scenario Cuba faces, aggravated by the United States' blockade
04:54on fuel suppliers, the island keeps achieving regular solar energy generation.
04:59In this regard, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez stood to his social media ex to highlight how the generation of
05:06more than 900 megawatts of solar photovoltaic energy in Cuba during mid-day hours is part of the results of
05:12the government program for the recovery of the national electric system
05:16and demonstrates the firm commitment to achieving sovereignty in this sector amid the U.S. oil blockade against our country.
05:29The United Nations urged the international community to reject the U.S. interventionist actions against Cuba.
05:35In an official statement, specialists and experts of the international body condemned Washington's executive order which labelled the Caribbean island
05:45as an unusual threat against the United States and said it was an argument without credibility designed to justify the
05:52extraordinary use of coercive powers by the U.S. government.
05:55The text also reminds that the executive order was not approved by the U.S. Security Council and so it
06:01does not have any basis whatsoever in collective security representing a serious violation of international law.
06:12And in Vietnam, social organizations gathered at the Cuban embassy in Hanoi to condemn the escalation of sanctions imposed by
06:19the United States against Cuba.
06:20In this scenario, the Vietnamese people described the measures as aggressive and cruel and demanded the immediate end to the
06:27blockade that affects the daily life of Cuban families.
06:30During the meeting, representatives of the Hanoi Union of Friendship organizations were affirming the historical support of Vietnam for the
06:37Cuban Revolution.
06:38Social organizations also denounced the escalation of U.S. hostilities as a failed attempt to break the will of sovereign
06:45nations.
06:45We continue with more.
06:48Moreover, on Friday, the Human Rights Office spokeswoman Marta Hurtado shared the organization's alarm over Cuba's situation steaming from decades
06:57of U.S. economic blockade and aggravated by the recent restrictions on oil shipments.
07:03I'm extremely worried about Cuba's deepening socioeconomic crisis amid a decades-long financial trade embargo, extreme weather events, and the
07:14recent U.S. measures restricting oil shipments.
07:17This is having an increasingly severe impact on the human rights of people in Cuba.
07:24And members of the U.S. Congress denounced the humanitarian impact of the oil blockade imposed on Cuba by the
07:30Donald Trump administration.
07:31Congresswoman Ilhan Omar joins the dozen of public figures in the United States who denounced the oil blockade against the
07:38island.
07:38In this scenario, it is worth noting that Representative Jim McGovern, chair of the House Rules Committee, introduced legislation to
07:46end the policy of economic, financial, and commercial strangulation against the Caribbean country.
07:51Both U.S. Congress members also question the effectiveness of the sanctions imposed by the Donald Trump administration and highlight
07:59the humanitarian damage they are causing.
08:09Also, more than 100 parliamentarians, trade unions, leaders, academics, and cultural figures in the United Kingdom have joined the urgent
08:16appeal for peace and sovereignty promoted by the campaign for solidarity with Cuba.
08:22The initiative which has gathered more than 4,000 signatures comes amid heightened tensions following U.S. military actions against
08:29Venezuela and explicit threats made by senior Washington officials against Cuba.
08:34The declaration warns that the region faces a growing danger and denounces decades of U.S. hostility including a criminal
08:41economic blockade which has caused immense damage to the Cuban people.
08:46The initiative comes amid heightened tensions following U.S. military actions against Venezuela and explicit threats by senior Washington officials
08:53against Cuba.

09:18We will be right back at Telesur English.
09:41Welcome back.
09:42Latin America lights up with colors as the 2026 carnival celebrations kick off.
09:47In Venezuela, the Bolivarian government is rolling out Operation Happy and Safe Carnivals 2026 with the deployment of more than
09:54228,000 police officers to guarantee police safety during the festivities.
09:59Meanwhile, in Brazil, about 8 million tourists are expected to attend the street parades and themed parades at the Sambódromo
10:07de Marques de Supicay in Rio de Janeiro.
10:09At a time when Uruguay is hosting performances by Muga groups from different parts of the country competing for the
10:16title of Best Carnival Performance 2026.
10:19Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Colombia, among others, they are getting ready to kick off the festivities.
10:31Venezuela celebrates carnival in a colorful display of joy and reaffirmation of traditions.
10:36Citizens kicked off the carnival celebrations with enthusiasm and color to affirm their cultural identity to the beat of the
10:44drums.
10:45Children and adults participated a mass in the festivities showing that popular culture remains alive despite the aggression perpetrated by
10:54the United States on January 3rd.
10:56Joy and respectful traditions marked this day as the Venezuelan people celebrated their national identity as an act of resistance
11:03and sovereign affirmation in the face of any attempt to break their spirit.
11:13We change topic.
11:14The Council of State of Colombia suspended President Gustavo Petro's executive decree that provided for an increase in the minimum
11:20wage for 2026 of more than 20%.
11:23The text of the Council of State details the provisional suspension of the effects of Decree 1469 of December 29,
11:312025 issued by the executive.
11:34In addition, it gave the government eight days to issue a new decree that takes into account criteria such as
11:40the inflation target, productivity and gross domestic product growth among other aspects.
11:45In this scenario, President Pedro ordered a 23.7% increase in the salary benefitting more than 2.4 million
11:53former workers in Colombia.
12:02In this regard, the Colombian executive stated that the Council of State's decision to suspend the minimum wage increase by
12:08the constitution.
12:09Through his account on the social network, ex-President Gustavo Petro stated,
12:13The living wage decree is required by the constitution and the decree already issued has all the economic criteria that
12:20have been reflected in it.
12:22So the transitional decree requested by the magistrate will, while the Council of State resolves the merits of the case,
12:30will follow the orders of the constitution.
12:32I will respect his decision but will act in accordance with the constitution.
12:36Out of respect for the magistrate, the Minister of Labour will hold a consultation meeting immediately and I request a
12:44meeting of the coordination of social movements to study the aptitude and the new decree that will be issued.
12:50In addition, in his message, the President emphasized that, as I have said since the first day of my administration,
12:57I ask you to build the social pact of life and peace.
13:00Suspending a decree of the minimum living wage puts at risk the constitution, which does not allow the purchasing of
13:08power of wages to be eroded and notifies the government's prerogative and its rights in matters of wages.
13:16Given the social or anti-social nature that a measure on wages must have, I invite the working people to
13:22express their opinion on this matter.
13:24The judiciary must know that the government is obligated to the vote that elected it and to the national constitution.
13:39In this regard, the representative to the Chamber for the historical pact of Colombia, Alirio Uribe Muñoz, warns that the
13:46suspension of the wage decree delays improvements in the living conditions of workers.
13:52This creates a crisis, an economic crisis too, because this wage was already being paid and the economy was already
13:59being revitalized thanks to that minimum wage.
14:02And obviously, now the improvement in the living conditions of millions of workers in Colombia would have to be reversed.
14:09We stay in Colombia. The government announced a package of economic measures aimed at mitigating the effects of the climate
14:15emergency on agricultural production and food prices.
14:19The strategy includes zero interest loans for small farmers to encourage planting in the face of prolonged rains.
14:26Also, President Gustavo Petro warned that the climate phenomenon will affect production cycles and ask the Bank of the Republic
14:33to review its monetary policy.
14:35In addition, the executive is considering intervening in the high cost of land leases to prevent them from impacting the
14:42end consumer.
14:49Human rights organizations denounce state persecution and authoritarianism in Ecuador to silence critical voices and opposition leaders.
14:57The standing committee for the defense of human rights issued an international alert due to the worrying authoritarian turn by
15:05the executive branch.
15:06A systematic scheme has been established in which the state apparatus no longer guarantees rights but rather functions as a
15:14tool for political harassment.
15:16All this because of the demonstrations in support of the mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Alvarez, who was unjustly sent to
15:23preventive detention.

15:56The United States government repealed Thursday the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, regulation that established that greenhouse gas emissions pose a
16:06health risk.
16:07President Donald Trump's decision was based on considering that climate change was a hoax, a justification related by scientists and
16:14environmental groups across the world.
16:16Environmental advocates consider this a serious blow to U.S. climate action as statistics show that it is the largest
16:23emitter of pollutants.
16:25Let's recall that the mission was adopted in 2009 by the U.S. Environmental Authority during Obama's term and established
16:32that six greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide and methane are harmful to health.
16:43Victims of Jeffrey Epstein Network accused the U.S. Department of Justice of trying to silence them after their names
16:49were published.
16:50Survivors of the Epstein Network point out that rather than trying to intimidate them by publishing their names in the
16:57case files,
16:58the U.S. Department of Justice is motivating them to raise their voices.
17:01The statement comes after they testified in Congress where they assumed that none of them had been contacted by the
17:09department.
17:10During the Congressional session, Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Yayapal asked the women affected by the Epstein case who were present in
17:19the room to stand up and raise their hands if they had not yet been able to meet with the
17:24Justice Department.
17:25They stood up making it clear that none of them had managed to meet with representatives of the U.S.
17:33Justice System.
17:39The Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation into possible links between the network of the late American pedophile
17:47Jeffrey Epstein and Brazil after receiving a complaint related to the case.
17:51In this regard, several messages revealed that Epstein negotiated the purchase of a Brazilian modeling agency with the at least
17:59purpose of gaining access to girls.
18:01In addition, the testimony of at least one Brazilian woman who has claimed to be a victim of Epstein Child
18:08Sex Trafficking Network is public.
18:10The investigation will be conducted by the National Unit for Combating International Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling which is being
18:17managed under secrecy in order to protect the victims.
18:27And we're going now to Europe. In Greece, around 80 tractors belonging to the Pan-Hellenic Committee of Blocks arrived
18:33in Syntagmak Square in downtown Athens to protest against high electricity and fuel costs and the lack of state support
18:41for the agricultural sector.
18:42The farmers have announced that they will camp in the square overnight and live in an elderly manner on Saturday
18:49morning.
18:50The producers argue that the government has not taken measures to reduce electricity prices or introduce tax-free diesel for
18:57the agricultural sector.
18:59They also denounced delays in paying subsidies to thousands of producers due to problems verifying land ownership as well as
19:07high production costs and low agricultural product prices.
19:17Unfortunately, after roadblocks in December 2025, the promises we were given turned out to be nothing but hot air. Nothing
19:25was done. We are left in uncertainty. We can make plans. And there is a sense of insecurity.
19:33We want lower production costs and less taxation. The prices of our products are low. So why are they high
19:40on the shelf? It's not only about us farmers, it's also about you the consumer.
19:47When I sell wheat for 20 cents and you pay 3 euros at the bakery for one kilo of bread,
19:52does that benefit you? I don't think so.
19:57In other news, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights released a report on Friday stating that the paramilitary rapid
20:04support forces RSF carried out war crimes and possibly crimes against humanity during their takeover of Sudan's western city of
20:12El Fasher last year.
20:13The office say there are reasonable grounds to believe that the RSF and allied armed groups committed acts amounting to
20:20war crimes.
20:21These acts include murder, intentional attacks against civilians, sexual violence such as rape, torture and the use of starvation as
20:28a weapon of war.
20:29It should be recalled that the RSF seized control of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state on October
20:3626, 2025, following the withdrawal of the Sudanese army forces.
20:40According to UN figures, tens of thousands of residents fled the city after the RSF took control, with many describing
20:48widespread violence during their journeys out of El Fasher.
20:57And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
