00:00This Tuesday, February 3rd, Citizens Worldwide hold rallies and different activities in support of Venezuela a month after the U.S. invasion and kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores.
00:24Climate crisis continues to cause weather disasters around the globe with forest fires, flooding and winter storms.
00:35And in the United States, a new batch of declassified documents from Epstein's files revealed that the U.S. sexual predator worked with Israel's Mossad.
00:48Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Dele Sous Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
00:58It's been a month since the U.S. treasurer's attack against Venezuela and the kidnapping of its constitutional president Nicolás Maduro and the First Lady and First Combatant Celia Flores.
01:22To give us more details about Washington's aggression and testimonies of some of the witnesses of that attack, as well as some of Bolivarian government leaders,
01:30our correspondent, Paolo Tachnik, brings us the first chapter of her series, The Signal of Victory.
01:35The world was watching silence a new form of criminal piracy.
01:51Twenty weeks of continuous criminal siege and attacks in the high seas were not enough.
01:57At 1.58 in the morning of January 3rd, the missiles of the empire hit Caracas, the gate to South America.
02:07An undustraling noise that brought to our continent the Gaza genocide and the certainty that the international law had died.
02:15It was an open fire against the nation that has only looked for its self-determination and dignity.
02:25Its supreme leader Nicolás Maduro was kidnapped and his bodyguards murdered.
02:31I dreamed of flying with planes that talked about the day.
02:41Just when people sang and cried.
02:52Just when people laughed and laughed.
02:55Just when people sang the most, because this was how the end of the year was lived in Venezuela.
03:05After a 2025 that, although besieged by the empire, had had record growth figures.
03:12Everybody is super happy. Everything is super. In order and peace.
03:18Everyone is having a great time. It's awesome.
03:22Because despite everything, despite sanctions, this year we had a quite considerable economic growth.
03:29The country in peace, celebrating.
03:33Maduro pa'lante.
03:34With Maduro forward, with Maduro forward. Maduro forward.
03:39Forward and touring Caracas with Ignacio Ramonet on the very 31st of December.
03:45Desde los emprendimientos más sencillos, la gente se fue rehacer.
03:49From the simplest business projects, people rebuilt their lives. Their countryside was restored.
03:55And they began to produce what was always said to be impossible. Food for Venezuela.
04:00Meat, milk, chicken, corn, rice, and so on.
04:04That was both with the oil money.
04:08Of course, the big flow of oil money distorted everything.
04:11We didn't choose to have a renter model dependent of oil.
04:14When I was born in 1962, the capitalist dependent oil renter model had already been imposed.
04:20And we were a U.S. oil colony.
04:22What we did choose was to build the foundations to break the oil renterism.
04:26To build another model.
04:31And Commander Chavez left us with the guidelines in his plans for the homeland.
04:35And we tried on the worst moment of the blockade that took away 99% of our oil revenues.
04:43When nothing was being produced in Venezuela.
04:49When we could no longer import anything, we said to ourselves, let's move forward.
04:54A Venezuela that rose strong.
04:56That knew how to open new roads.
04:58Boosting its own economy and consolidating food autonomy.
05:02Also generating the return of compatriots who came back to their land hopeful.
05:08With almost 50,000 communal councils in operation.
05:12The people of Venezuela had triumphed.
05:14And the empire could not tolerate it.
05:17The port of La Guaira y Guerrote and Fortuna.
05:25Points that could be seen in the distance.
05:27In the middle of the darkness.
05:29These first reports came from the Bolivarian armed forces.
05:33After assessing the damage caused by the criminal attack.
05:40The terrorist attack against our people.
05:45Against Afghanistan.
05:47Against electrical facilities.
05:49Against the Bolivarian revolution.
05:52And even against those who have nothing to do with the Bolivarian revolution.
05:56It is an attack against Venezuela.
06:00Against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
06:03In this unfortunate hour, I invoke the courage we inherited from the liberators.
06:10Who taught us that dignity is not negotiable.
06:14And that the homeland is a supreme value.
06:17They attacked us.
06:18But they will not bring us to our knees.
06:21Together, our soldiers and our people will put up an indestructible wealth of resistance.
06:27The mourning and the testimony of these survivors would tell the rest.
06:32We defend our unit.
06:37When the helicopter was coming down, we had to act.
06:42Because otherwise, they would have taken our unit.
06:47At 4am, the streets were quiet.
06:50Once again, the Venezuelan people responded without falling for provocations.
06:55Despite the uncertainty, the Venezuelan people knew how to resist.
06:59It was another of the battles that Chavismo had to face.
07:03Perhaps the most difficult one.
07:05The helicopters began to fly overhead.
07:13There was an explosion on the Mamo Plateau.
07:16And about 10 seconds later, there was a flash.
07:20And the building was blown off.
07:24What we did was help the neighbors who were running for help and shelter.
07:29Because they were bombing the entire protel.
07:32A resilience that has been built hand in hand between the military forces and the people
07:38in an unbreakable bond that once again was put to the test.
07:42The instructions of the President Maduro have been given.
07:46The instructions of the President Maduro have been given.
07:49The instructions of the President Maduro are to get activated immediately.
07:52And the Minister of Defense, Vladimir Padrino LĂłpez, knows it.
07:56Our Bolivarian National Armed Forces know it.
07:59The Venezuelan people organized in Malaysia know it.
08:02And our citizens' security agencies know that imperfect police and military fusion
08:07will go out to defend our homeland.
08:10No one will violate the historical legacy of our father liberator SimĂłn BolĂvar.
08:16A defense that was activated in every home, in every neighborhood,
08:20but also in the various branches of the state that outrage did not paralyze anyone.
08:26Quite the contrary.
08:28He warned it.
08:29That if anything happened to President Nicolás Maduro, the people would take to the streets,
08:38activated.
08:39The militant groups would be at their workplaces, activated.
08:44And the Bolivarian military forces would be activated throughout the national territory.
08:51Like an omen, Daybreak began to clearly reveal the desolation of the attack,
08:57to identify the victims, to guard the extent of the offense,
09:01and also to spur the response of a dignified people.
09:06But Delsi's first words during that fraternical dawn still resounded in the air,
09:11thick with gown powder, astonishment and rage.
09:15We immediately demand a proof of life of President Nicolás Maduro and the First Lady,
09:24the First Combatant, Celia Flores.
09:27But it was more than just a proof of life.
09:32It was a signal of victory in the charist style,
09:35which turned tears of anger into strength,
09:38to seal a complicit call to the Venezuelan people,
09:41who once again decided to rise up and continue.
09:45In Venezuela, citizens continue to mobilize in support of acting President Delsi Rodriguez
09:58and to demand the release of President Nicolás Maduro and Celia Flores.
10:02Premier, our correspondent has more details.
10:05Today marks one month since the U.S. military dropped missiles and
10:10various locations in Venezuela killing 100 people, including civilians,
10:15and kidnapping Constitutional President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores.
10:21There have been protests going on all month across Venezuela
10:25and I've witnessed many of them firsthand during my coverage for Telesur.
10:30Just yesterday there were two separate protests demanding freedom for Nicolás Maduro in Caracas, the capital.
10:37There was a protest in front of the Supreme Court with thousands of union workers
10:41showing their support for Adelsi Rodriguez and demanding freedom for Nicolás Maduro.
10:46And last night a vigil was held near the Placida Moneda in downtown Caracas
10:51for freedom for Nicolás and Celia.
10:54So today on the one month anniversary, a huge protest is planned for downtown Caracas
11:00where tens of thousands of people are going to pour in from the neighborhoods on the periphery of the city.
11:05Community leaders, residents of the communes, union workers, workers council members,
11:11and all other people who are sympathetic for the cause of sovereignty in Venezuela
11:16who want to have their voices heard in their demand for freedom for Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores.
11:24We're going to have our first break coming up. Remember you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English
11:28where you'll find news in different formats, news updates, and much more.
11:31We'll be right back. Stay with us.
11:33Welcome back.
11:41Turkey joins the day of action in support of Venezuela to demand the release of President Nicolás Maduro and Deputy Celia Flores.
11:47Our correspondent Yunus Zoner has more.
12:04Hello from Istanbul, from Turkey.
12:06Turkey was one of the countries that rejected the hijacking of the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro
12:12and the first combatant Celia Flores on January 3rd.
12:15Across all over the political parties, there was a shared opinion that this was an attack on international law,
12:23an illegal act of aggression committed by the United States of America.
12:28A month later here, we are in the city center of Istanbul, where dozens of people have gathered to a conference held organized by the Vatan Party,
12:38one of the political parties of Turkey, and with the participation of Venezuela's council general here in Istanbul, Lisette Marquez.
12:46Lisette Marquez, in her opening speech, emphasized that the Venezuelan institutionality, despite this aggression,
12:54has stood firm as well as the Venezuelan people did, and they defended the peace in their country,
13:00and they defended against this imperialist attack.
13:03Vice President of Vatan Party, Serdar ĂśskĂĽplĂĽ, in his speech emphasized that the Venezuelan state, the Venezuelan army,
13:12and the Venezuelan people are not only defending the sovereignty of Venezuela, but also that of Turkey and the entire global south,
13:23as the United States imperialism is trying to attack on five different fronts globally.
13:29He counted among them Cuba, Iran, and other fronts as well, and he emphasized that the U.S. imperialism is doomed to fail in this offensive.
13:38Erdem İlker Mutlu, an expert on international law from the Hacettepe University, also held a speech.
13:45He clearly described, explained why this attack, why this hijacking by the United States was an illegal act, a violation of international law,
13:54and he also emphasized that this is an attempt of the United States to impose globally a new form of hegemony.
14:02All speakers have agreed that the U.S. attempt to impose this hegemony is doomed to fail, and the people who were listening also interrupted the speeches frequently,
14:14stating, shouting actually, that U.S. imperialism will fall, that Maduro, President Maduro will be free, and Venezuela will win,
14:23which was also the slogan of this event, Venezuela will win and Maduro will be free.
14:29It's noteworthy that the Vice President of the Vatan Party, Sardar ĂśskĂĽplĂĽ, in his speech said that five years from today,
14:37Nicolas Maduro will be President of Venezuela, and he will be remembered in history books, while U.S. President Donald Trump will be forgotten.
14:46So the mood here in Istanbul in this event is strongly in solidarity with Venezuela and also self-confident of a U.S. failure in Venezuela and elsewhere.
14:59And the Chinese government will affirm its unconditional support for Venezuela one month after the U.S. bombings that affected the country
15:06and the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores. Our correspondent in China, Bruno Falsi, has the details.
15:12Greetings, comrades. During a press conference held by the Chinese Foreign Minister's spokesperson, Li Jiang,
15:21responded to a question made by Telesur here in Beijing one month after the U.S. attacks on Venezuela, stating that the Washington actions,
15:32which included the bombing at civilians and the invading of Venezuela country, we forced detention of the Constitutional President Nicolas Maduro and the First Lady Celia Flores.
15:47This constitutes, for the spokesperson, a clear violation of international law, infringing up Venezuela's sovereignty, and threatening the regional peace and stability.
15:59Let's listen now to these words.
16:02The flagrant military attack by the United States against Venezuela and the forced detention of President Maduro and his wife constitutes a serious violation of international law,
16:14to regulate Venezuela's sovereignty and threaten peace and stability in Latin America and the Caribbean. China firmly opposes this.
16:21China supports Venezuela in safeguarding the sovereignty, dignity, and legitimate rights, and will work with the international community to firmly defend the purposes and principles of the United Nations charge,
16:33abide by the fundamental principle of international morality and safeguard international equality and justice.
16:40China made it clear that the United States aggression sets a dangerous precedent for the region and the world, and that all disputes must be resolved peacefully, without external interference or coercion.
16:56Beijing reaffirmed the support for Venezuela's sovereignty, defending his dignity and legitimate rights,
17:05and warned that the international community must act with justice, fairness, and respect for international law.
17:14With this news, from here, the capital of China will return with you in the studios in La Habana, Cuba.
17:23Let's stay on topic. We are now joined by political scientist Eduardo Meneses to deepen on the impact of the U.S. blatant violation,
17:32its aggression against Venezuela, not only for the Bolivar Republic, but for the entire region and the international system.
17:38Welcome, Eduardo, to From the South.
17:40Well, thank you. Thank you very much for the invitation. It's my pleasure to be here.
17:45It's always a pleasure to have you. Eduardo, it has been exactly one month today of the U.S. aggression against Venezuela and the kidnapping of the Constitutional President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores.
17:57A month past, what are your takes? What has been the impact for Venezuela and for the region as a whole with the U.S. Empire exercising its hegemon over the different countries of the region to try to implement their own policies in their own interest?
18:12Well, I think that the main takeaway that we can mention after this month is that definitely the real face of the U.S. imperialism has been shown.
18:26What happened in the aggression to the Venezuelan people had nothing to do with all the narrative that the Trump administration was trying to take out, like democracy, liberty, fight against terrorism.
18:40It has nothing to do with terrorism. It has nothing to do with that. And we have been seeing during this month how all the U.S. imperialism has been getting forward in many other fronts, like all the debate on Greenland.
18:56And what we are seeing right now with the total illegal and arbitrary blocus on Cuba, which has been strengthened to the point that Mexico had to take a step back on the exportation of oil to the Cuban island.
19:18And we have seen the same things in other territories where in Middle East, the U.S. is taking very aggressive stances in the same way.
19:29So it's very obvious that what happened to Venezuela had nothing to do with all the narrative that the U.S. has been developing during this month, the Trump administration.
19:42But it really has to do with this strategy from the Trump administration, but the whole U.S. state, which is trying to maintain a hegemonic place in the world by the only use of weapons, because there is not other ways in which the U.S. could try to maintain this global power position that it has had in the last two to three decades.
20:10If it's not by weapons, they do not have the same power economically, financially, even culturally.
20:16It has been eroding a lot in the last decade. So that's the only way that the U.S. empire has shown to try to maintain its position in the world.
20:26Eduardo, for a month now, we have seen the Venezuelan people rallying, taking to the streets to express their support for the acting president Rodriguez and for the Bolivarian revolution,
20:35but also to demand the immediate release of the constitutional, the presidential couple.
20:39How important are these actions that are taking place in Venezuela, but also around the world, in different countries, in all five continents,
20:46people demanding respect for international law, for the respect of sovereignty and the right to self-determination of the people?
20:52How important are these actions coming from the people to ensure to be able to give way to a true international order that managed to guarantee the respect of all these international rights that exist today,
21:04but are obviously not being implemented because the rule of the stronghold appears to be the one that is being enforced right now?
21:11Well, there are different levels in which we could make an analysis of the importance of all this popular support that has been showing up during all this month.
21:21The first one is how the false narrative of the Trump administration around a dictatorial regime that was going to fall by itself,
21:34if they took Maduro, what's going to happen?
21:38And that never happened.
21:39It's exactly the opposite.
21:40We have seen the opposite side that we have seen the Venezuelan people rallying together against this violation of the sovereignty,
21:47this violation of the international law, this totally illegal abduction of the President Maduro.
21:56But there's also another layer of analysis that's really important that we need to develop here,
22:03which is the fact that in all the corners of the world,
22:07we are seeing this aggression of the Trump administration against the Venezuelan people
22:14as a potential aggression to every people of the world.
22:18Obviously, mainly in Latino America, because the U.S. have been expressing in the last months
22:25and it has been put in the new Monroe Doctrine that went out in November,
22:32in last November from the Trump administration,
22:35that Latino America is being mainly a territory that the U.S. is considering taking its own colony.
22:43And we need to use this word of colonization of our continent
22:47because that's exactly what the Trump administration is saying.
22:50But in other corners of the world, could be in the global south,
22:54but even in the global north, people are understanding that this violation of international law
23:01is something that is threatening every people in the world.
23:06It's not only Venezuela, it's not only Cuba, it's whole Latin America,
23:11but all the peoples in the world.
23:13Because as I was saying, in this moment, the U.N., the international institutions
23:20that were supposed to defend and reinforce international law
23:26have not been able to do that.
23:30And we have been seen, I must say, we have been seen since the genocide in Palestine
23:35that international law, I think, has been buried through the bombs in Gaza.
23:41And after that, what is left when we do not have international law
23:45is only the law of the strongest.
23:48And that's exactly what the U.S. imperialism is trying to bring to the table.
23:52That's exactly what the Trump administration is doing
23:55when they are defunding the U.N. institutions.
23:58But as the U.N. general secretary said in these last days,
24:04they're in a very critical economic situation,
24:06which they may need to close some of their headquarters, for example, in the U.S.,
24:11if they continue to be defended.
24:14And that is an extremely dangerous place for all the peoples in the world,
24:20knowing that international law is not longer an option
24:24and it's only the law of the strongest
24:28that could detect what's going to happen in the relationships between nations.
24:31That's a very strong threat to all the peoples in the world.
24:38Thank you, Eduardo, for your time here and your inputs in From the South.
24:43Thank you very much.
24:44It's a pleasure to have you, as always.
24:48Well, like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
