A 29-year-old factory worker has been charged with the murder of his mother, who was a bank executive, earlier this month.

The accused, Amirul Shafiq Shamshul Zahari, who was brought before the Magistrate's Court in Alor Setar on Wednesday (Feb 11) nodded in understanding after the charge was read before Magistrate Eliana Ismail.

00:00A shocking case out of Al-Ostar where a 29-year-old factory worker has been charged with murdering his mother.
00:09Amirul Shafiq Shamshul Zahari appeared at the magistrate's court on Wednesday,
00:14where he nodded in acknowledgement as the murder charge was read before Magistrate Eliana Ismail.
00:20He was accused of killing 52-year-old Zahrulayl Basir, a bank executive,
00:25at their home in Taman Sultan Abdul Halim on February 2nd.
00:30The alleged crime occurred between 3.15am and 8am.
00:34The victim was found dead with stab wounds to her abdomen, head and palms.
00:39Amirul Shafiq was detained while on a bus heading towards Selangor on the night of the incident.
00:45No plea was recorded, as the case falls under High Court jurisdiction.
00:49The offence falls under Section 302 of the Penal Code,
00:54which carries either the death penalty or imprisonment between 30 and 40 years,
00:58plus whipping of at least 12 strokes.
01:02The court set May 11th as the next mention date, pending post-mortem and forensic reports.
