00:00Let's talk about the most recent deal
00:01because this is the one that I need Jack's emphasis
00:04and input on because a lot of young players
00:07were moved in this trade.
00:09So the Milwaukee Brewers are getting back
00:12the multi-talented and often well-traveled.
00:16Strangely enough, Kyle Harrison, left-handed pitcher,
00:19goes from Boston where he only spent, I think,
00:21not even a year, was it the Devers trade?
00:24David Hamilton also goes in return to Milwaukee.
00:26He's gonna take the spot of the guy they traded,
00:28I assume, in Caleb Durbin,
00:31who was a fantastic second baseman,
00:33I thought, for them last year.
00:34Also, Andrew Monasterio was involved in the deal.
00:37The thought process, for sure, I get it.
00:40I'm gonna guess that the Red Sox overpaid to get Durbin,
00:45but how much did they overpay to fill that position?
00:48They had been looking to fill second base
00:50the entire offseason.
00:52To be honest, I really don't know
00:53if they overpaid to get Durbin
00:54because Durbin is a heck of a player.
00:57So I don't know what an overpay looks like for that guy.
01:00The other thing that we gotta factor in
01:02is Caleb Durbin comes with five years of control.
01:05And it seemed like the Red Sox were hunting
01:07second base or third base.
01:09And they were gonna figure this out.
01:11And the Red Sox offseason has been fascinating.
01:13It took a long time for them to sign
01:15a major league free agent, right?
01:17They were operating in the trade market
01:18where they go and acquire Sonny Gray
01:19and Wilson Contreras in two separate deals
01:22with the St. Louis Cardinals.
01:23But then they signed Ranger Suarez
01:25and you're thinking, okay,
01:26it's time for some heavy hitters to come to Boston.
01:29Alex Bregman always felt like priority one, right?
01:31He was the guy that effectively took Rafi Devers' spot.
01:35The subplot in this is fascinating
01:36because Harrison was the headline of the return
01:39going back to Milwaukee.
01:41Kyle Harrison was the headline of the Rafael Devers deal.
01:43And now three of the four players you got back
01:47for Rafael Devers are in other organizations.
01:50They traded James Tibbs, they traded Jordan Hicks,
01:53and they traded Kyle Harrison.
01:55You're rerouting all these pieces.
01:57So the only guy left from San Francisco
01:59that came over in the Devers deal
02:01is a minor league pitcher that had an ERA north of five
02:04this year in Jose Bale,
02:05which is fascinating to me in its own right.
02:08Bregman was probably priority one for Boston.
02:11He signs his $175 million deal with the Cubs.
02:14And then you pivot to,
02:16do we want a guy that can play second and third in Durban,
02:18or do we want a guy that is going to handle
02:20third base every day in Isak Paredes in Houston?
02:23Because Houston has a ton of infield.
02:25They opt for the cheaper guy
02:28and they opt for the guy with more control.
02:30Paredes is making about $10 million this year.
02:33He's got two years of control left.
02:35Durban is making the league minimum.
02:36He's got five years of control left.
02:37And Caleb Durban is a very strong,
02:41he's a small guy, but he's twitchy.
02:43He's a fun ad at third base or second base
02:46for the Boston Red Sox.
02:47The other funny thing about this trade is
02:49the Red Sox just took the entirety
02:52of Milwaukee's third base reserves.
02:55So they got their primary option at third and Durban,
02:57their secondary option at third and Monasterio,
03:00and their tertiary option at third and Anthony Siegler.
03:03So they're clearly trying to steal a line from Billy Bean,
03:06recreate third base in the aggregate right now.
