Transcript
00:00Hello there, welcome to your Wednesday morning weather update from the Met Office.
00:05Outbreaks of rain through this morning extending into this afternoon.
00:09We have rain warnings covering Scotland, eastern Scotland where we could see 40 to 60 millimetres over higher ground,
00:1630 to 40 millimetres across the southwest of Scotland where that warning extends throughout the day and into evening time.
00:23The jet stream is to the south of the UK.
00:24We're seeing a lot of bad weather, that's rain and wind and the risk of flooding across Iberia
00:30and the rain extending towards France as well through the next 12 hours or so.
00:35Low pressure sits across the UK.
00:37It's slow moving as it has been for the last few weeks, spewing clouds and rain just pushing northwards,
00:44very slowly stalling across Scotland as we have seen and that continues to be the case as we head through Wednesday and into Thursday.
00:52Slowly though, the air turns colder from the north and that will bring a slight change in the way it feels outside as we head into the beginning of the weekend.
01:02For the time being, if you're stepping out, watch out for some mountain snow, a little bit of showery rain for the Northern Isles but some clearer skies across Shetland.
01:10Persistent rain covering most of Scotland through the morning into the afternoon and further south you can see rain coming and going across Northern Ireland.
01:18That wet weather extends across Northern England towards the North Midlands, Northern parts of Wales.
01:24Now to the south of that, it's a bit more showery across central and southern parts of England and Wales with a blustery breeze coming in from the southwest, a mild direction.
01:34So a mild start to the day here yet again like the last few mornings.
01:39So through this morning, we watch as this wet weather continues to nudge northwards.
01:44And what that means, this showery rain across more southern areas will extend north as well.
01:49We could find that cloud breaking across central and southern parts of England and Wales through the morning into the afternoon.
01:54It's wet across Northern Ireland and wet with that persistent rain across much of Scotland with mountain snow.
02:02Temperatures in the north only 5 or 6 degrees Celsius with that wind making it feel colder.
02:07Further south, we'll see values coming in around 11 or 12 Celsius with a blustery breeze.
02:11So that's the picture through this afternoon.
02:14A real change in coming our way through Saturday though.
02:18I can promise a little bit of drier and brighter weather.
02:21Not the case through this evening.
02:22That rain continues its passage northwards.
02:25Some rain grazes the south coast as well.
02:28And then we could see some clearer skies for a time across central and southern parts of England and Wales.
02:33Showers towards the south west as that rain retreats from Aberdeenshire and the Grampians into the early hours of tomorrow morning.
02:41At the same time, a slight wind direction change across Shetland and Orkney towards Caithness.
02:47And notice as those showers slowly file in, it could turn wintry.
02:52The air is turning colder here.
02:54Through into Thursday morning then, a bit of a murky start wherever you are, like this morning.
02:59And we'll see that rain continuing across Northern Ireland, south-west Scotland.
03:04Rain also across eastern counties of England, the south-east of Scotland.
03:08And showery bursts just pushing in across the south-west and that continues through the day.
03:14A real change in temperature though through Friday into Saturday as that low pressure sinks southwards.
03:20And then we'll see colder air coming in.
03:22That means a risk of frost.
03:23And into Saturday, a ridge of high pressure.
03:26The promise of some brighter weather, some drier conditions.
03:29Still windy though along that east coast there.
03:31And we look towards the west to see where our weather's coming from into Saturday night.
03:35And that's rain preceded by some snow.
03:38Through the early hours of tomorrow morning then, well, it's a murky start.
03:42As I said, outbreaks of rain continuing across more western areas through the day.
03:46And moving in across this east coast with that strong easterly wind.
03:51Showers file in across the far north.
03:53They increasingly will turn wintry.
03:55And then through the morning into the afternoon, we continue to see the progress of that rain extending towards the Midlands,
04:01north-west England, northern parts of Wales as well, with showers towards the south-west.
04:07Here's your outlook through Saturday.
04:08We've just seen this.
04:09That low pressure does sink southwards.
04:11Showery bursts of rain.
04:13It's just slowly retreating as the air turns colder from the north.
04:16The risk of a frost, one or two wintry showers.
04:19Some drier skies though through Saturday before all change into Saturday night.
04:23That cloud and rain moves in preceded by some snow.
04:26And then more rain arrives across Northern Ireland through Sunday as well.
04:30I'll see you later.
04:30I'll see you later.
