On this episode of Watch & Go, Evelyn fangirls over John Boyega and reviews the Netflix Original film Imperial Dreams. Have you watched it?
Transcript
00:00John Boyega is my best friend.
00:03So I'm gonna do what any good best friend would do, and review his film.
00:07Hey, naturally curly world, I'm Evelyn, and welcome to this episode of Watch and Go, the
00:12series where we review movies, TV shows, music videos, viral videos, while we do our hair.
00:18I'm kinda bald head, so that's not really gonna take that long.
00:21The conditioner I'll be using to detangle my hair is the Diva Curl One Condition Decadence.
00:28I'm going to review Imperial Dreams.
00:31It premiered at Sundance, I believe, in 2014, but it just hopped on Netflix, so your girl
00:37watched it.
00:38So yes, spoilers.
00:40The hood is the cruelest of prisons, the most unusual of punishments.
00:50Why you running so hard?
00:51You're born into it.
00:53When you're born in prison, you don't know what to do with freedom.
01:03Imperial Dreams.
01:04Imperial Dreams is about a young dude, my best friend John Boyega.
01:09In the movie, his name is Bambi, don't ask no questions.
01:12Just got out of jail, facing some difficulties because his baby mom is also in jail.
01:17He's trying to take care of his son.
01:19To keep his son, he has to get back on his feet, but to get back on his feet, he really
01:24can't be a felon, but he's a felon.
01:26I haven't watched 13th, the documentary by Ava DuVernay, but I feel like the two go together.
01:34His uncle is like, if you're not gonna push these packs, you know what I'm saying, you
01:39have to get out of my house with your little boy.
01:41John Boyega's like, I gotta, I gotta do right by my kid, which is, for the time, living
01:46in his car.
01:47What I really liked about, kind of the juxtaposition between, ooh, juxtaposition, yes, someone who
01:56is a criminal, but at the same time, they're a really loving father.
02:01He held his son's hand literally the whole movie.
02:04You know, everybody wanted to pick black fathers as trash, but John Boyega was trying, okay?
02:12And that's why he's my best friend.
02:14While in prison, he's writing a book, and the book is called Imperial Dreams.
02:19Anytime there's narration, it's him reading a piece of his book.
02:23What I loved about this movie is that that part wasn't corny.
02:26It can get a bit, uh, get a bit cliche.
02:30There are a couple moments in the film where the music kind of slows down to this twinkly
02:37dream sequence-y type music, and it made me feel things.
02:42And then I realized at the end of the credits that Flying Lotus actually created the original
02:48music for the film, and Flying Lotus is fire.
02:54Holler at him on Spotify.
02:55At the end of the movie, John Boyega gets his son taken away, and it's just like, why?
03:06God, why?
03:07And that's when I start bawling.
03:08Like that ugly cry, where you're like, goddammit!
03:13You know what?
03:14I give it a five out of five.
03:16The story itself never got cliche or gratuitous, like, we shall overcome, and it's like, nah,
03:24sometimes it's not about overcoming.
03:26Sometimes it's about the fact that you're gonna be stuck, because that's the way the system's
03:31built.
03:32America.
03:33You know what I'm saying?
03:36Anyway, I'm gonna go rinse my hair out, hit a little co-wash, um, and I'll be back.
03:40I'm back with freshly co-washed hair.
03:45I used the last of my Brown Butter Beauty Sweet Milk Detangling Leave-In Conditioner.
03:54Love it.
03:55Then for my styler, I used the Bumble and Bumble BB Curl Style Anti-Humidity Gel Oil.
04:03Evelyn, Bumble and Bumble?
04:06Yes!
