00:00Hey NaturallyCurly World, I'm Evelyn and welcome to Watch and Go, the series where we review things that we watched while we do our wash and goes, our hair care routines.
00:10In the spirit of the holidays, I am going to review great African American cinematic classic, Best Man Holiday.
00:19I can't tell you how good it is to have all of us under the same roof again.
00:24Christmas in New York, it's going to be great.
00:26Christmas. We used to be best friends. You're my boy and I miss you.
00:33Alright, so off camera, I am going to go wash my hair real quick. I'm using my, one of my favorites, the Alecay Naturals Moisturizing Black Soap Shampoo.
00:43I have not washed my hair in a minute. I only wash my hair if I'm filming one of these videos.
00:49So it's been a while. I'm going to go do this and I'm going to come back and I'm going to talk about this experience.
00:54Alright, I'm back. Almost blinded myself. Got some shampoo in my eye, but we're good. You know what I'm saying? God got me.
01:01So next, I'm going to deep condition my hair with the As I Am Hydration Elation.
01:07You know this is a favorite of mine. So I'm going to deep condition my hair with this and detangle.
01:11So, The Best Man Holiday is the sequel to The Best Man. Um, a movie that came out in like 98? 99? 98? 99.
01:21Featuring all, you know, the heavy hitters. Uh, Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs, Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, um, Terrence Howard.
01:30Uh, lots of other people. You know what I'm saying?
01:34When this, when The Best Man Holiday came out back in 2013, I was excited.
01:39I wanted to know what would happen next in that universe, in that story, since it ended on such a high note of Taye Diggs proposing to Sanaa Lathan at Morris Chestnut and Monica Calhoun's wedding.
01:53So throughout this watch and go, I'm going to refer to people by their actual names, not their characters, because ain't nobody got time.
02:01So it's the holidays, and Monica Calhoun, Morris Chestnut's, um, wife, has requested that everybody get back together, that the gang get back together for a Christmas getaway at their mansion, at their estate, if you will.
02:16You get the sense that over the, that since the last movie, The Best Man, that they haven't really kept in touch, especially Taye Diggs and Morris Chestnut, for reasons that are obvious if you watched The Best Man in 1999.
02:31Morris Chestnut's character has always annoyed me, um, you know what I'm saying?
02:35The patriarchy is so strong in that one.
02:37But anyway, he's supposed to be a godly man or a family man or whatever.
02:41So The Best Man Holiday is really just, you know, your average sequel, hallmark-ish, holiday-type movie centered around the stories of these people that we all know and love from The Best Man.
02:56And you come to find out that Taye Diggs has some ulterior motives, so he's trying to get the rights to Morris Chestnut's, uh, memoir, because he's about to retire from the NFL.
03:09So that's happening during their stay.
03:11And then, during their stay, you kind of get the sense that, oh no, is Monica sick?
03:18Because she's really skinny, she's like skinny mini, and she has this face during the whole movie that's like, hmm, I'm really gonna miss this.
03:26This face that's like, what is she not telling us?
03:29Hmm?
03:29I don't want to, like, just give a synopsis of the movie, so I'm gonna just tell y'all, in case you haven't watched it, Monica has cancer.
03:35Uh, everybody's devastated.
03:37Morris Chestnut is in denial, because he thinks, like, you can just pray your way out of everything.
03:42Um, like you can, like you get what you pray for, first of all.
03:45You can pray all you want, but that might not be the plan.
03:49You know what I'm saying?
03:49That might not be, uh, God's plan.
03:52Or whatever.
03:53So, yeah, it's just about them coming together and realizing that friendship is, like, strong and important.
04:02Um, the movie itself is not that, uh, exciting.
04:05It's, if you didn't watch The Best Man, there's really no reason for you to care about The Best Man Holiday.
04:12If you enjoy seeing a star-studded cast of, you know what I'm saying, black actors that just do not age, I mean, my God, they look exactly the same.
04:24The only thing that changed was the fashions.
04:26If it weren't for the fashions, you wouldn't know.
04:29Um, that Nia Long is, like, 15 years older.
04:33If you like, um, the soundtrack.
04:37The soundtrack is pretty great because it's, like, Christmas music, but, like, Mary J. Blige and Fantasia.
04:42Um, you know, lots of, ooh, ooh, ooh, lots of that.
04:46So, while I was watching The Best Man Holiday and realizing that Monica has cancer, and not only does she have cancer, she's terminal.
04:55I was like, I swear to God, if you kill Monica Calhoun, I will leave this theater.
05:02I can't take it.
05:03They advertise it as a feel-good reunion.
05:06People aren't supposed to die in holiday, uh, romantic comedies.
05:11That's just, it's not supposed to, that's not, it's not okay.
05:14What this movie really shows is that no matter how successful or together you may seem, everybody has issues, everybody has their problems, you know what I'm saying?
05:27Everybody is insecure.
05:29Oh, my gosh, the insecurity.
05:30Morris Chestnut been holding a grudge.
05:32You got the girl.
05:34I can never tell if Terrence Howard is acting.
05:37Go ahead and sit on Santa's lap.
05:39Like, you're too young to be playing somebody that old.
05:41There's this weird, like, sexual tension between Taye Diggs and Nia Long, and I'm just like, this is too stressful.
05:48Me, myself, personally, this is just too much.
05:51All right, so I have detangled my hair with conditioner.
05:55Oop, I forgot to put some in the back, you know what I'm saying?
05:59Gotta keep this moisturized, even though I really should get a haircut.
06:02Um, but life is hard.
06:06I'm gonna go rinse it out and apply my leave-in, which is, you all know, the Camille Rose Naturals Coconut Water Leave-In Conditioner.
06:15And then I'm gonna use this new product, um, LA Naturals Manuka Honey and Coconut Curling Jelly.
06:24You know what I'm saying?
06:25I saw the cute girls on Instagram talking about LA Naturals, so I thought I'd give it a try and see if it works.
06:32Oh, yes, I have applied my leave-in and this curling jelly, which, I mean, it hasn't dried yet, so the verdict is still out, but look at this definition, oh, yes, so I'm liking it.
06:48The best man holiday.
06:49I give it a solid three out of five, you feel me?
06:55Um, it's not groundbreaking.
06:57I don't need a third one, you know?
06:59Um, I think things wrapped up kind of nicely.
07:03I mean, not nicely, because Mark Calum died.
07:05But, guess who they had at her home going?
07:09Anthony Hamilton and Marsha Ambrosius.
07:12And that was just, like, that was the point in which I kind of, like, teared up.
07:15You know, she brought people together again.
07:17You know what I'm saying?
07:18Forgiveness, love, mercy, all those good, good things.
07:23With smooth stylings of Fantasia Barrino yelling a Christmas carol in the background.
07:28It's, that's really what the holidays are all about.
07:32So if you are looking for something, um, just to cut on the CD during the holidays, when you know they're cooking, baking, I recommend The Best Man Holiday.
07:42It's a nice sequel to a classic, and, uh, I think you should watch it.
07:47So that is my watch and go, and this is my wash and go.
