This week on Watch & Go, April reviews the Netflix movie Deirda and Laney Rob a Train. Have you seen it? What did you think?
Transcript
00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, I'm April and today I'm going to be reviewing Deidre and Laney Rob Train.
00:07I know you may think that your future looks bleak.
00:11Mom's in jail and the power's out.
00:13What if we lose the house?
00:15You guys know what's great about being in here.
00:20It's therapeutic.
00:22I'm gonna rob the train.
00:25What?
00:27I'm gonna start off with the Flora and Curl, Curl Refresh Clay Wash.
00:33So this is some intense stuff.
00:35I'm gonna have to DIY, mix it up like a mask.
00:38I can't wait.
00:39Then after that, I'm gonna give myself a second wash.
00:42I think because it's been, not gonna lie, it's been a second.
00:46So we're gonna go through with the We Dad Ultra Nourishing Cleansing Oil.
00:50So today's a special day.
00:51I'm gonna be using two totally non-traditional cleansers.
00:55Cashmere and Caviar.
00:58I'm gonna be deep conditioning with this.
01:00Then I'm gonna be treating my scalp with the Sasha Inchi Oil from Sasha Pure.
01:05It's from Peru.
01:06Thanks, Peru.
01:08I'm gonna follow up with the Entwine Aphrodisia Leave-In.
01:10Cream of Nature with their Perfect 7 Leave-In Treatment.
01:14Because I may or may not have some heat styling in store today.
01:17And then last but not least, I'm gonna follow up with my Frank Juice.
01:20Just cause it makes my hair smell good.
01:22Alright guys, so this is what the Florin Curl Clay Wash looks like.
01:25All mixed up.
01:26Looks like some nice, delicious oatmeal.
01:29We're in a small town.
01:31That's where we find our heroine, Deidre.
01:35She's a senior in high school.
01:37She has college aspirations.
01:39She's trying desperately, you know, to get an education and get out of her small town.
01:46And we open with her getting paid to help people cheat.
01:51So that's what you do when you're a smart kid, but you're also a poor kid.
01:55But you're also an ambitious kid.
01:57And I can definitely get behind that.
02:00We see her little sister Lainey, who is just cute as a button.
02:04Uh, her sister Lainey is going through a pageant process that's done by their schools.
02:12But, uh, their mom's in jail.
02:14So, yeah.
02:15That's, that's a thing.
02:16There's not a working adult in the house, so...
02:19Where's the money for the light bill and food gonna come from?
02:24Deidre, who's the older and more enterprising one, because, I mean, now she has to be,
02:30gets the idea that they're gonna start robbing the train that goes by.
02:34Deidre is gonna go to college, whether everyone around her likes it or not,
02:39because she's not letting this town trap her like it did everybody else.
02:42Alright, so I gotta let this goop sit on me for ten minutes.
02:48And, uh, then we'll come back with some more about the characters.
02:55To put an 18 year old all of a sudden in charge of raising two younger siblings,
03:02not just babysitting for a night, but for the foreseeable future,
03:06legally in charge of feeding and housing two other children, that's a lot.
03:13Their dad, though, that's an interesting character.
03:16So, he actually still lives and works in the town that they live in,
03:21and any of the kids can go visit him at basically any time.
03:24They know that he works at the train yard.
03:26And he's not unaccessible.
03:29He's just not in the house, which is a really interesting dynamic.
03:32The way he helps his children is by helping them learn how to steal better,
03:36which is kind of hilarious.
03:39Last character of note is the detective who has noticed that,
03:44huh, this train's getting robbed a lot.
03:47Because you can't pull off the level of heists that they are without some attention.
03:53Alright, I'm gonna go try this oil rinse,
03:55and then I'm gonna talk to y'all a little bit about blended families and social justice.
03:59Alright, you guys, so I have the caviar and cashmere on my head right now,
04:06so as I'm deep conditioning, let's get into some deep talk.
04:10I'm gonna condition some more, though, because I'm what, you guys?
04:13Extra.
04:15The movie does dip into a lot of the politics surrounding our education system
04:20and the opportunities that children do and don't have
04:23to either better their situations where they are
04:26or to learn and take their skill set elsewhere should they so choose.
04:30But it was never thought in anybody's head that I wasn't gonna go to school.
04:35And that's not the reality for a lot of people.
04:38And I thought that it was really good that this film addressed that.
04:41It's like, hey, just because we went to trade school
04:44or we're in our 30s and up still working a customer service job
04:48doesn't mean that we're not people.
04:50It doesn't mean that we don't have hopes and dreams and dignity.
04:52And I was just like, yes.
04:55So while I sit and ruminate on this, I'm gonna come back,
04:58hit myself with all these styling products,
05:00because it's gonna be something really, really elaborate, you guys.
05:03I'm gonna marinate a little bit more,
05:05and then we'll talk about the pros and cons of the movie.
05:11Okay, you guys, so I've deep conditioned.
05:14I've sprayed my hair with this other leave-in
05:17so that we can get me heat protected here.
05:20Leave-in condition, and then I hit my scalp with the Sasha Inchi Oil,
05:23so that's why I'm looking all nice and extra shiny right now.
05:26Now I'm gonna take out my spoolies.
05:28I'm already doing a twist,
05:30so it's gonna be like a nice, dried, stretched twist out.
05:33But I'm gonna add something to it by putting the spoolies
05:36just right on the ends of my hair to give it that extra...extra curl.
05:42Unfortunately, watching this movie is a lot like watching one of those
05:46made-for-TV Disney movies where it's a little bit...
05:50Some of the delivery is a little bit corny,
05:52and there are a lot of moments where the direction isn't as up to par
05:57for a feature film as I would have liked it to be.
06:00But because of the mature situations and some of the language in it,
06:04even though I would recommend...
06:06It's recommended watching, as far as I'm concerned, for teenagers,
06:10uh, it's not for every household.
06:14The curls came out really nicely,
06:16so what we're gonna do right now is cover them on up.
06:21Yeah.
06:23And then I'm gonna reach for my box from Candy Coated Curls.
06:29I'm so proud.
06:34I'm gonna call her Candace.
06:41I will give it a 4 out of 5 stars instead of a 5 out of 5
06:44because that direction, that kind of made-for-TV Disney movie stuff,
06:49it gets to be a little grading point.
06:52I'm gonna catch you guys next time.
06:54Remember, we do watch and goes every Wednesday,
