00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, I'm Lauren and I'm Leslie and today we're reviewing
00:05Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It Netflix series. My first impressions of Nolah
00:12darling insatiable. There's a girl that I once knew who often had a friend or two
00:17she gave him time of waiting rhymes to blind. Before we do that we're going to
00:23tell you a little bit about the products we're using today. I am going to be
00:26using the Bounce Curl Moisturizing Shampoo and then I'll be conditioning with the
00:34DevaCurl One Condition Delight and I will be using this hair and scalp cleanser by
00:42Coils by Nature. It's the first time I'm trying it. I'm really excited and then I
00:47will be scrunching my hair with the Urban Curls Gel. Yes. Today I'm using the Sasha
00:55Pure Rehydrating Cleansing Conditioner. So this is going to be my detangler also.
00:59Then I'm going to follow up with the Ecoco Moisture Rich Leave-In Conditioner. Prep my
01:07curls for styling with the Redken Curvaceous. All curl types. And then I'm going to follow
01:16up with that with the Miel Honey and Ginger Styling Gel. So we're going to go wash our
01:23hair and then we'll be right back.
01:25Hi y'all. So we're back. We just washed our hair and now I'm about to detangle and Leslie,
01:35what are you doing? I'm going to detangle as well. I'm going to use the Honey Baby Naturals
01:38hair smoothie to kind of run through my waves. It'll take like two seconds. It's going to take
01:44me 45 minutes to detangle with the Sasha Pure cleansing conditioner. So I actually didn't
01:50rent it out. I left it in just so I could show y'all what I do. There was a film in 86 that
01:55Spike Lee did. He recreated it-ish and made this series on Netflix, but we didn't love it.
02:04There were parts, but overall, no. This is focused on Nola Darling, who's the main character,
02:12and she's in a polyamorous relationship. I personally don't feel that it was a good representation
02:19of a polyamorous relationship. I felt like Nola didn't have her life together like most
02:26of us, but used people to distract her. So each dude plus Opal, they all were like very specific
02:34kind of people. I don't feel like they did a good job, and maybe that wasn't the focus,
02:39but I don't feel like they were multi-dimensional. They're just like, this person, I am. So like
02:46Mars was like the goofy guy who didn't really, who had like multiple jobs. Yeah, like b-boy.
02:51B-boy was just like not taken seriously. And then Jamie's like very corporate, very suit
02:59and tie, is also married, by the way. Oh yeah. Very married. Yeah. But going through marital
03:05problems, as they all say. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And then you have Greer, who was the model. He's the guy
03:12you would find in New York that has like 10k on Instagram and just thinks he's all that. Yeah,
03:17like model slash photographer. Oh, that's right. He was a model slash. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But he was
03:21supposed to be like the artsy one. Yeah. Yeah. And then there's Opal. Yeah. So Opal, was she a plant
03:31shop owner? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. She had her own business. She was an entrepreneur. She was
03:36a mom. Yeah. Yeah. And she was just really beautiful. Yeah. She's gorgeous. Yeah. She's
03:42the type of girl that probably played like volleyball in college and then got a modeling
03:46gig. Yep. Um, you know, hashtag goals. Yeah. That's Opal. And I feel she's probably the only
03:53person we saw in the series that had something to her character other than just being like a love
03:59interest. And I would say too, the person that Nola like really was vulnerable with out
04:04of all of them. So you could tell that there were some feelings there, but she just like
04:09didn't know how to be with Opal in that sense, as opposed to how she was with Jamie, Mars and
04:15Greer. They just were kind of like, um, just toys. Yeah. With Shmetka, she, um, she wasn't
04:21comfortable with her body and she was throughout the whole like series, she's talking about getting
04:26butt injections. Um, but she can't afford to like go to like a plastic surgeon, surgeon
04:31Right. In like a real place. So she's like thinking of going like the back alleyway. Um,
04:37and she's doing all this because she wants to be one of the top dancers in New York. Um,
04:41and so I feel like, I don't know, I was kind of upset that Nola wasn't supportive of her
04:48friend's decision. Yeah. Like I definitely felt there was some like judgment.
04:51You forgot about Clorinda though, the other friend. Okay. Oh yes. Yes. So Mars was Clorinda's
05:00boyfriend first. Yes girl. Yes. And then Nola just came in and swept him. I think, I think
05:07they broke up. I'm not really, I think did they break up? Nola and Mars? No, Clorinda and
05:13Mars broke up. Yeah. And then Nola came in and got her sayings. They didn't really give any like
05:17background to that. They may, I feel like it might've just been like a fling. Yeah.
05:22But I feel like her friend might've had real feelings for Mars. I think she really liked him.
05:26Yeah. Mars is so lovable. He's so cute. He is. I love Mars. You know.
05:33Nola is walking down the street in New York, going back home to her like apartment at Brownstone.
05:39And she gets attacked by this guy and the guy's like very aggressive with her. Um, so real quick,
05:45now I'm applying the gel to my hair and I'm just going to spreadsheet it. This guy's attack like
05:50spurs her to create this entire movement that says like, my name isn't. Is that what it said?
05:56I think it said. Yeah. Yeah. My name isn't. And she puts it like over the top of all these different
06:02faces of black women, like Latino women and things like that and plasters it all over, uh, Fort Greene.
06:09But nobody knows that she is the artist behind this work. And so Clarinda finds out that she's the
06:15artist and puts it in an art show. Yeah. And then Nola gets really like mad about it.
06:23Yeah. She was also upset because Mars was the one that told Clarinda. That told Clarinda.
06:28Yeah. And Nola really wanted to keep this hush hush. It was like very much like gorilla art and she
06:33didn't want it to be tied with her name and she just wanted it to be like an outlet, right? Yeah.
06:38To like express like all this frustration she had with being like attacked and sexually assaulted.
06:43Okay y'all, so I'm back from washing out my cleansing conditioner and now I'm about to spray my hair
06:48with a little bit of leave-in and then to find my curls for a wash and go with the...
06:53So overall, I feel like they really missed the mark and this was a good opportunity for them to
07:04kind of prove that like they don't believe in the trash that they like did in the 86 film. Right.
07:10But it just didn't happen that way. No, it didn't. At all. The way they just depicted women's
07:18sexual experiences altogether which is not very positive. Yeah. Yeah. I don't even feel like I
07:24know Nola. Yeah. No. Yeah. Absolutely. They really focused on just like her sexuality but I don't
07:32know her. Yeah. I do like that they touched on gentrification. Everyone was really beautiful
07:39in this show. Everyone's very attractive. And of course, Spike Lee had to make a really political
07:44episode about the presidential election so that's one to watch for sure. But it is going to have a
07:52season two though so I'm curious to see what happens. Which means anyone who's trying to make a film
07:58series? Anybody can do it. Because if you get a film for season two, you can get a season two. You can get a season one.
08:05So I'm going to diffuse my hair. And I'm going to let this air dry. And we'll be back. Overall, I would say
08:16if you're bored, if you're looking for something to watch and you've gone through all the documentaries on
08:21Netflix, you can definitely just pick this up, finish it in one evening. I mean, yeah, there's no hate to
08:30the show at all. Like, we support you, Spike. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But that's how I feel. Okay, out of five stars,
08:38I would give it a two and a half stars. That's all you get from us. So that's our watching girl review.
08:53She's got to have it. Have y'all checked it out? Let us know in the comments below. So don't forget to like,
08:58share and subscribe. We do these videos every Wednesday. So check us out next week. Bye.
