Have you watched Hasan Minhaj's comedy special on Netflix? What did you think?
Transcript
00:00Hey NaturallyCurlyWorld, it's Nicki and on this episode of Watch and Go, I'll be reviewing
00:05for you the Netflix special, Hasan Minhaj, Homecoming King.
00:12Americans hit their kids on the arm and bruise their body.
00:14Immigrants slap you across the face and bruise your soul.
00:17It's Guantanamo of the mind.
00:22We were in AP Calc together, but we had chemistry.
00:30Today I'm going to be shampooing my hair with the Two Girls with Curls Shampoo.
00:34This is in the scent Lavender and Grapefruit.
00:36Then I'll be conditioning with the Jessacurl Touche Extra Moisturizing Conditioner.
00:41And then for styling, I'm just going to apply some Miel Organics White Peony Leave-In Conditioner.
00:46I used this in my first wash and go.
00:48And then I'm going to follow it up with a new Miel product, new to me anyways.
00:52It's the Styling Gel in Honey and Ginger.
00:54I don't use gels.
00:56Hopefully this turns out right.
00:58Let's get started.
01:00Okay, so I just got through washing and conditioning my hair.
01:06Austin is from The Daily Show.
01:09He was a Daily Show correspondent.
01:10You also might have seen him at the White House Correspondents Dinner.
01:13Was it called the White House Correspondents Dinner?
01:15Because I heard that, you know, somebody wasn't there.
01:18Okay, so first I'm going to section my hair into four sections and do what I usually do.
01:23Detangle and apply a leave-in.
01:25Basically, he has a lot of anecdotes.
01:28And when I first saw it, I thought it was going to be like a regular comedy special in the sense that it's just going to be a whole bunch of jokes back to back.
01:35But it wasn't so much jokes as it was his story.
01:38So he talked about how his parents immigrated here from India and they're Muslim and he and his dad were the only brown people.
01:47People were saying that you couldn't relate to it unless you were brown.
01:51But I don't believe that.
01:52If you ever felt like you were sort of left out of the white spaces, you would get what he's saying.
01:58You'd relate to it.
01:59Some of the critiques of his special was that, yeah, it wasn't funny.
02:02I thought there were parts in there that, you know, they had me cracked up.
02:05Especially when he talked about his sister.
02:07He didn't know he had a sister.
02:08He got surprised because his mom was getting her medical degree.
02:12His parents just came back from India and was like, oh, this your sister.
02:15He was upset because she was so, like, Indian.
02:19And she didn't get that this is America now.
02:21You can't be out here embarrassing me being all Indian.
02:24Because he really wants to fit in with, like, you know, his white friends.
02:27There are parts where he talked about after 9-11 where his house got attacked and he got these, like, horrible racist phone calls.
02:36Where people were basically calling him the sand n-word.
02:40I guess people who found it preachy were probably just being haters.
02:44Hassan also talked about his marriage.
02:46Yes, ladies.
02:47He is not out here for you.
02:49He's married.
02:50His family did not want him marrying a Hindu woman because he's Muslim and there are vast differences.
02:56And he illustrates those differences in a very comical way.
02:59There is one story in high school, which is sort of the reason why it's called Homecoming King.
03:04There is this white girl.
03:05He called her white princess.
03:06Her parents seemed like they were accepting.
03:08They liked him.
03:09You know, she went to his house.
03:10He went to their house.
03:11They studied together.
03:12They were friends.
03:13And, you know, it seemed like, oh, wow, this one white girl, like, gets it.
03:16She's not, like, weirded out by, like, my Indian food smells.
03:18They were going to go to prom together.
03:20So, he was like, oh, man, this is so cool.
03:22I'm going to go to prom with a white girl.
03:24Which is so, like, that's, like, pinnacle, I guess.
03:27That's problematic, but, you know, whatever.
03:29So, he was really excited to go to prom with this white girl.
03:31He shows up at a house.
03:33I don't want to spoil it for you, but it didn't work out.
03:35That sort of shapes his life.
03:36Like, this girl was really important to him.
03:38He had a lot of visuals.
03:41It all comes full circle because homegirl ends up marrying an Indian guy.
03:44She talked about the pressures of her parents being white, being like, oh, you know, you
03:49know, you have to have a certain look and you have to, you know, look a certain way and
03:52be a certain thing.
03:53And it paralleled with his own story because his own brown parents are like, you know,
03:57what will people think if you marry a Hindu girl?
03:59Okay.
04:00Well, now I'm going to apply this gel because I feel like my hair is good.
04:02People who use gels, let me know in the comments below.
04:04This is too much gel for one section of hair.
04:07I think we're going to find, yeah, this is too much gel.
04:09This is too much gel.
04:10This is too much gel.
04:11It's going to be looking all crispy-cratchy.
04:12All right.
04:13That's great.
04:14Super.
04:15Okay.
04:16So back to Homecoming King.
04:17I wouldn't go into it expecting to like roll on the floor, cry laugh.
04:21It's not bad.
04:22You get a few, but you'll get great stories.
04:24You'll get great illustrations in the back and I think you'll really enjoy it.
04:29So since my hair has this gel in it, I don't think I'm going to diffuse.
04:32I don't think you guys are going to see what my hair looks like when it's dry.
04:34I would give it three and a half stars out of five.
04:36I did expect a little bit more laughter.
04:38I appreciated the stories and the little anecdotes and the illustrations in the background.
04:43So I think it's a great show.
04:44You should definitely watch it.
04:46If you loved the correspondence dinner, if you loved him on The Daily Show, you'll love
04:49him in the stand-up.
04:51Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe.
04:53We do watch and go every Wednesday, so we'll see you next Wednesday.
