Girl power! Nikki and Grace are back to tag-team review the cinematic extravaganza that is Wonder Woman. Have you watched it? What did you think?
Transcript
00:00Hey Naturally Curly World, I'm Nikki.
00:02And I'm Grace.
00:03And welcome to Wash and Go, the series where we review things while doing our Wash and
00:07Go.
00:08In this episode, we'll be reviewing the movie Wonder Woman.
00:11Wonder Woman!
00:30So, Coconut Restore is sponsoring this video, thanks Coconut Restore, and today we're
00:39going to be doing our Wash and Go's with all Coconut Restore products.
00:42I'll be using the shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, and the gelay.
00:46And I will be using the shampoo, the conditioner, the leave-in, and maybe the gelay, depending
00:52on how my hair is going with the other products.
00:56So, we just got through shampooing and conditioning our hair with the Coconut Restore Moisture
01:02Replenishing Shampoo and the Coconut Restore Daily Strengthening Conditioner.
01:07The conditioner has proteins in it, and it's very thick, but it runs through your hair.
01:12It's very easy to dangle.
01:13And the shampoo is kind of thick for a shampoo, so you don't need a lot to lather up, but it
01:18does lather.
01:19It does lather, which I was surprised at, because it's sulfate-free.
01:23They have a very, like, tropical-y scent, obviously, because it's coconut, so, feeling
01:27good.
01:28Feeling good.
01:29Watching, like, the first, probably half hour of the movie was, like, my favorite part
01:34of the movie, because you see Wonder Woman before she's Wonder Woman growing up on this
01:39island, and it's all women for, like, the first half hour.
01:43Seeing this girl, like, want to become a warrior, it, like, really touched me just because, as
01:50a little girl growing up, I always felt like I was more of, like, a tomboy.
01:54And so, like, seeing that little girl, like, I legit almost cried just seeing that and seeing,
01:59like, her thriving in this society where she didn't even have to think about, like, those
02:05things that we had to think about.
02:06It was very beautiful.
02:08I wanted to be covered in gilded gold, and they just looked gorgeous.
02:13They looked strong.
02:14They looked powerful.
02:16They looked, like, confident.
02:18They didn't look like they were doubting themselves.
02:20And not only that, they were all different shades of women.
02:23And I really appreciated that, being a woman of color, to see women of all different colors,
02:28all different shades, all different body types.
02:30The inner child, the inner Nicki, needed this movie.
02:33She did this years ago.
02:34Yes.
02:35The leave-in is actually really good.
02:36It helped detangle my hair quite nicely.
02:38The actress who plays Diana, aka Wonder Woman, was pregnant when she was filming the scenes.
02:44Homegirl was like Serena Williams out there, giving it her best, giving it her all.
02:46Yeah.
02:47And a pregnancy didn't stop her.
02:48So it just added to the whole empowerment thing, like, she's not gonna be stopped.
02:51She's like a real-life superwoman.
02:52Yeah.
02:53You're not gonna be stopped by a little period, a couple cramps, and maybe a baby.
02:56You know what I'm saying?
02:57Like, you gotta be out here winning.
02:58So I definitely think it's an improvement from past female-led superhero movies, but
03:04I do think, like, we still have a ways to go.
03:07I got upset.
03:08I'm not gonna lie to you.
03:09I think, someone loves Chris Pine, you know, in this video.
03:11It's not me.
03:12Okay.
03:13I love Chris Pine in general.
03:14Chris Pine's cool, whatever.
03:15What is your problem?
03:16That's fine.
03:17Chris Pine's cool, but I could've done without his entire storyline.
03:20It kind of felt like, okay, I guess she needs a love interest, and that's fine.
03:23She could have a love interest, and that was Chris Pine.
03:25But at the end, Chris, it felt like he was trying to save the movie with his storyline.
03:29Yeah, I agree.
03:30And it was like, I don't need this.
03:31Like, she's Wonder Woman, she can handle this by herself.
03:34We don't need Chris Pine over here trying to get an Oscar.
03:37But I do think that she needed a human to show her, like, how good humankind can be,
03:44like how selfless they can be, to restore her faith in humanity.
03:47It just didn't have to be Chris Pine.
03:48No, it didn't.
03:49It definitely didn't.
03:50I will say, we need to touch on this, because I'm almost done.
03:54I'm gonna take a little bit of this jelly and put it on my ends.
03:57It was a fantasy world that they live in in the beginning, right?
03:59There's all these women, and it's beautiful, and you feel empowered.
04:04But I also felt like, as a woman of color, I felt a little awkward in one of the scenes
04:08where young Diana is running through the woods to learn how to battle.
04:14And guess who's chasing after her?
04:16Little old black Haitian woman.
04:18And I just felt some kind of way about it.
04:19I was like, if we can create a world where women are empowered, why do we have to, why
04:24did we go back to that trope?
04:25Why would it have to be a black woman chasing, who takes care of?
04:29You know what I mean?
04:30Yeah.
04:31And there were no black female leads.
04:33There were no black female leads.
04:34And when you went out into the world, like the human world, I can't remember seeing any
04:40person of color.
04:41Not there.
04:42There were no, I don't think there were any women of color.
04:44Yeah.
04:45I appreciated us being there.
04:46I appreciated the glow.
04:47They had all kinds of colors.
04:48Right?
04:49It was beautiful.
04:50And I appreciated us being included, because oftentimes women of color are not included.
04:56But I also kind of felt like, well, why do we have a mammy, and why were they just background
05:01figures?
05:02Yes.
05:03It was awesome in so many respects, but there are so many, also so many things that they
05:08could have done better.
05:09I think my favorite character was Wonder Woman.
05:13I just loved her personality and her wonderment at things.
05:16My favorite character was Robin Wright, Claire Underwood, and Teope.
05:20She is just y'all.
05:22Should we say our rating on the count of three?
05:25Sure.
05:26Okay.
05:27One, two, three.
05:28Five.
05:293.5.
05:30I love it.
05:31I'm giving it a 3.5 purely from a reviewer's standpoint.
05:36When I'm looking at it critically, it gets a 3.5.
05:39When I'm looking at it with my feelings, it gets a five.
05:41You know what?
05:42I agree with you.
05:43I'm giving it a five from my feelings and the visualness and the fact that the director
05:48is Patty Jenkins and she directed Monster.
05:50But go see it.
05:51It's so good.
05:52It's really good.
05:53Take your mom, your grandma, your sisters, your aunts, your uncles.
05:56Take everybody you know.
05:57Take the men in your life and the women.
05:59So good.
06:00It'll change your life.
06:01Thank you so much to Coconut Restore for sponsoring this video.
