00:00To be on set alongside someone and you have to kind of be, have this duality and this connection
00:07was really intriguing but also I think intimidating because you know you didn't want to mess up,
00:14you didn't want to you know like Tamara said make it a caricature or a dumbed down approach
00:21or a lazy approach to their experience and how they express themselves but you had to find depth
00:28in it and I feel like that was really intimidating you know you were wondering if you sounded
00:33like them if you if you acted like them you know but but I felt like the spirit of who they were
00:39you know we we try to capture that every day and and thankfully it's it it it played itself out
00:45into the scene and and allowed you to connect. They shall be institutionalized indefinitely.
00:51If you were telling your story, how would it begin?
01:01I'm not a good book, you need to feel it. I have to be inspired.
01:07Who the heart we want.
01:10Right is now.
01:12Right is now.
01:13Hello, Brandi Victoria with Essence Magazine. How are you?
01:16Hey.
01:17Good to see you.
01:18Good to see you both. I would love to start with what each of you found most intriguing about
01:23this project and also most intimidating about taking on the roles of Jean and Jennifer
01:27what I found most intriguing and I think was actually the same thing as what I found most
01:38intimidating was which was that they were real people that really existed and that there's
01:45a huge honor and responsibility in depicting a true life story that you have to be careful
01:51to not uh yeah make a caricature or um sort of bastardize an experience or um or do or or judge
02:07or judge your character either and I think um so it was fascinating to be able to get into the
02:13psyche of someone that really lived and understand them in a way that is different to how the media
02:17depicted them um but also yeah that I mean also then holds the bar and the standard even higher
02:24in terms of like you know representing people especially you know one of the twins is still
02:31alive and so making sure that that um the depiction of her late sister is not one that brings any
02:38disrepute um or undermines the kind of how intricate and complicated their relationship was
02:47for me one of the most um intriguing aspects was the opportunity to um represent twins you know
02:59that's something that I've never done before usually you do your work in isolation and you bring it on
03:04set and hope that it's good um but to to be uh on set alongside someone then you have to kind of be
03:12have this duality and this connection um was really intriguing but also I think intimidating
03:19because you know you didn't want to mess up you didn't want to you know like Tamara said make it
03:24a caricature or or or a dumbed down approach um or a lazy approach to to to their experience and
03:32what how they express themselves but you had to find depth in it and I feel like that was really
03:37intimidating you know you were wondering if you sounded like them if you if you acted like them
03:43you know but but I felt like the spirit of who they were you know we we tried to capture that every
03:48day and and thankfully it's it it it played itself out into the scene and and allowed you to connect
03:55were you able to uh speak with June at all or members of the family or even access um any of the
04:01sisters writings as you you know got into the world yeah um Marjorie Wallace who wrote the book um she's
04:08very close to the family and she she allowed us to to come to her home and sit with her and and she
04:14showed us images and and and diary entries and and private archived um information that is not
04:22accessible to the public and we're really grateful for that and she has a great close connection to June
04:27and and and in that um we were able to keep updated about how June was feeling about it she's very
04:33private and we want to keep respecting her privacy um but we we we are honored that there's a sample of
04:39approval um there is a there is a uh uh an appreciation for our our version of the story that is rich and that
04:50is full of life and that's fully rounded you know and and that's something that the media didn't do before
04:56and now we're taking ownership of that and showing how beautiful these sisters um are and i'm really proud of that
