00:00For the second year in a row, Essence and Ulta Beauty have teamed up to give six inspiring young
00:10teams the opportunity to jump into the beauty. Girls United Beautiful Possibilities is a special
00:15mentorship program that follows the team's journeys as they co-create a capture collection
00:20to be sold in Ulta Beauty stores early next year. Welcome to the new cast, plus Chelsea Worthy,
00:25all here to discuss all things black romantic and the life of being young black beauty entrepreneurs.
00:30Take it away Chelsea! Hello everyone and welcome to Young Black Embossed Up,
00:36inside the life of Gen Z beauty entrepreneurs. My name is Chelsea Worthy and I am a beauty
00:41influencer and creator of the Traptoil style of beauty tutorials. I am so excited to be here with
00:47the cast members from season two of Girls United Beautiful Possibilities, our web series. Together
00:53with Ulta Beauty, Essence has given six young bosses the opportunity to be mentored by industry leaders
00:59and co-create their very own beauty collection to be sold in Ulta Beauty and on Ulta.com next year.
01:05Each of these young women are one of a kind, but one thing they all have in common, beauty and brain.
01:10They're here to give us the tea on what it's like to launch their very own makeup line,
01:14so let's meet our panelists. Joining us today is Jatara Ellis. She's a student at Clark Atlanta
01:20University. Currently a rapper, YouTuber and model, she hopes to pursue a career in the entertainment
01:26industry. And next up we have Nellie Gasana, a student at the Fashion Institute of Technology in
01:32New York City. She's pursuing her college education, freelance opportunities and internships all while
01:37planning to launch her own cosmetics line. Next, please welcome Fanta Cabba, a public health major at
01:43Michigan State University with a minor in communications. Next, we're joined by Jacqueline Means.
01:49Jacqueline is a student at the University of Delaware. She's also a founder of the Wilmington
01:54Urban STEM Initiative. Next, we meet Kaylani Sparks from Richmond VA. Kaylani is in her senior year
02:02of high school. She hopes to become a pediatrician or the founder of her own makeup brand. Last but
02:07certainly not least, we welcome Val Keese, a student at Valencia College. And Val Keese hopes to pursue
02:13a career in marketing after college. So let's jump into some questions. Share two things that make you
02:19unique and how you were able to pull from that individuality to contribute to that group.
02:24Going into Essence GU, having all of these beautiful ladies to work with me,
02:29it was just amazing. And I just brought that positive energy uplifting everybody.
02:34And we just riding and rocking and rolling with it. And I hope you guys love what we came up with.
02:38Hey Kaylani, so what's your take on it? My experiences, like just things I've been through,
02:45things that I've learned. Like my story, I've been through a lot. And so I feel like I can contribute
02:51that because I can help people, you know, handle what they're going through. And I can understand,
02:56and it just, it helps me connect with everyone better. So how do you think having varied interests
03:02and bringing your full selves to beautiful possibilities kind of added to the creation
03:06of your beauty collection? We're all women of like different walks of life. And for me,
03:11it really brings representation. And like me being like a black Muslim woman, it's just like,
03:16it's amazing that I was part of this opportunity because it's like, when I was growing up,
03:20I really never had that representation. Well, I think that our uniqueness is what really made
03:27the collection pop because we all have, you know, amazing ideas and amazing things to like show.
03:34It's for everybody. Jacqueline, you even founded a STEM program for young girls in your hometown.
03:41So what's one thing you learned or a piece of advice you received from Beautiful Possibility
03:45Mentors that made you think about being a better leader? One thing that I've learned from both the
03:50mentors and my peers is that the power of collaborative effort and teamwork is so great.
03:57I just graduated from a military academy and I was very high up in the ranks. So I,
04:01for the four years, I'm very used to things being done my way and everyone doing what I say. So of
04:06course I came to, you know, every single meeting with an idea that I had, and I was like, this is
04:12how it's going to go, you know, and I was very determined to have that be how it went. And I would,
04:17you know, like, you know, let me sit back and listen to what these other five intelligent,
04:21smart, amazing young women have to say, reminding myself that teamwork is much better than me working in the
04:26industry. Just adding on to what you said, like part of being a leader is just like,
04:30sometimes that means like maybe you stepping back and giving other people that opportunity,
04:34you know, and then that it's like a domino effect. You give that person that opportunity,
04:38they like, you know, all the confidence and all that, they step back and they give that to someone
04:42else. Not many people can say that they've created a makeup line that's sold in all to beauty stores.
04:47I feel like that is quite the break into the beauty industry. And Nelly, you have plans to launch your own
04:54cosmetics line and bow keys, you want to be a digital marketing manager. So tell me more about
04:59your future plans. Being part of this program has definitely helped me take like more initiative when
05:06it comes to creating my own beauty brand. When I first came into this program, I had the idea,
05:12I had the plans, but I had no idea where to start. And just learning from all the mentors in this
05:18program, and these beautiful girls right here, and being able to collaborate with people and see how they
05:24like Bayview beauty has definitely helped me a lot because I have my own perception of beauty.
05:30Like I'm more into, you know, the bold colors and just like very editorial stuff. But then I have
05:37like girls here who are like really into, you know, the natural look, the clean beauty aspect,
05:43the natural ingredients and stuff. And I've just learned so much. Like I've taken in so much information
05:48and the more and more I take in information, the more excited I become. So that's definitely what
05:54I'm going to be working on for the rest of this year. What surprised you about the process that
05:58you'll keep in mind when you're out there making your own boss moves? The production, like the process
06:03of production, like what goes into making a collection. Like for example, like going to the
06:09the legal team for shade approval, because you know, you got to be careful of that, like what's
06:13already in the market. And then also like learning about the market and like what's your ideal consumer
06:17and like who you want to sell everything to you. That really meant a lot to me because I want to go
06:22into marketing and I want to be in digital marketing. And so really the whole experience of this program
06:27and learning about the process of production, which I didn't know of before, um, was really meaningful to me.
06:32I totally agree with what that piece said. Um, I was surprised that like how long the process was
06:40because I always thought that a brand as big as Ulta, like it would just be, you have the idea,
06:44you execute it. And I was like, wait, this takes time. Like with so many stages, there's too many
06:50people involved. It's not just like a straight road. So that was very helpful for me to learn as well.
06:56So, so again, incredible answers. And I, like you said, just going off what you just mentioned,
07:03the process is super long, but I definitely feel like the outcome was more than worth it because
07:09you guys all grew close to each other. And throughout this entire campaign, I feel like
07:13you've learned so much about yourselves. And I think that that was really the main point, the purpose
07:18of bringing all you guys together. Right. So where we back, I would like to thank each and every one of you
07:25for having this conversation with me and you guys are all so inspiring. And honestly, I cannot wait
07:31to see what you do next. I know that you're headed for great, greater and bigger things than this.
07:37So before we wrap for everyone out there, who is watching, be sure to shop the collection
07:43and catch the new cast on season two of Girls United, Beautiful Possibilities dropping next year.
07:48So here's a little sneak peek of what's to come.
08:07Three, two, one, action. You guys get to create an exclusive collection that will get sold in stores
08:15that people can literally go into the store and buy. Wow, this is crazy that it's actually happening.
08:20I'm from Boston in the street. You cannot miss The Glam Quiz.
08:26Whatever mold means to you. Whatever it means to you, do that. I've never done anything like this.
08:31Go! Okay. Oh my god. Honestly, I was shocked. Your ladies look amazing. I feel welcome, I feel loved,
08:39and I'm beyond happy. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with. Absolutely. Based on this,
08:44it's gonna be lit.
