00:00Straight from the pages of Essence Magazine, I'm Senior Beauty Editor Tasha Turner, here to take you on a journey to discover the latest products, the fiercest gadgets, and talk to you about all things beautiful. This is Beauty All Access.
00:13Today we're here with natural hair blogger Curly Nikki. Now Nikki gets 3 million hits a month, so the natural hair community comes to her for tips, tricks on their natural hair. They want celebrity info, they want product info, they want product reviews, and they go to her particularly for everything and to know everything about natural hair.
00:39So today, I want to talk to Nikki about why she is so popular. Now Nikki, when did you start?
00:453 years ago this month, 3 years ago October 2008, I sat down, it must have been 24 hours I stayed awake and wrote 30 articles at once and launched the site with 300 readers and it's just grown exponentially from there.
00:59Now what are, let's go into products if you don't mind, what are some of your favorite products?
01:03Oh my gosh, right now I really love curls, the curls line, like their souffle, I love Kemet Biologics, that's probably my favorite line. It's all natural, but it's, I mean it works as if it has like all that new science in it and I don't know, maybe it's just like a miracle product, but I specifically like their ghee, there's a cocoa tree detangling ghee and you can use it to twist out and braid out, which is what my hair is today, just to twist out on dry hair.
01:31Yeah, I'm a product junkie, so my favorite products today won't be my favorite products next week, you know, it's always changing.
01:37Of course, and they say too, when you go natural, when you're natural, that you are, you turn into a product junkie, is that true?
01:44Yes, yes, it's very true, and we're always mixing things and you know, layering products, trying to get that perfect look, and it's, at the end of the day, you just have to accept what your hair does because, you know, there is nothing that's going to change your hair texture,
01:57and once people realize that and stop biting it, that's when you really come to love your hair, and it's a process.
02:03Yes, it is a process. I'd love to talk about transitioning while we are on the process of the journey. What is someone, for someone who is just transitioning, do you have any advice for them?
02:16Oh, wow. You know, the transitioning process is unique to every individual, so, you know, you could do it for a month, two months, three months, or three years.
02:26So, it's really whatever fits your lifestyle and your patience level because there is a place on the strand where your relaxed hair meets your natural hair, and it's very weak and fragile and can break.
02:37So, you have to be very gentle and detangling and styling, and a lot of people become very overwhelmed and will chop just spontaneously one day and then find themselves, you know, having confidence issues, self-esteem issues because they didn't prepare fully, you know, for the chop.
02:53So, if you're transitioning, I would suggest doing the research for how to maintain the two different textures and to learn styles that blend them seamlessly without using excessive heat, you know, to exacerbate the dryness issues and to get yourself ready for when you become all natural, you know, get the products gathered, you know, all the information gathered, have your arsenal ready so that you're not like in shock whenever you do chop off.
