Transcript
00:00Straight from the pages of Essence Magazine, I'm Senior Beauty Editor Tasha Turner.
00:04This is Beauty All Access.
00:09Today we have a special treat.
00:11We're here with celebrity hairstylist Tippi Shorter and creator of Hair by Tippi Shorter.
00:16Thank you so much Tippi for coming in today.
00:18I love being here Tasha.
00:20And today we are talking about transitioning.
00:22Now you know I'm transitioning.
00:24Yes.
00:24I don't know if you guys know that I'm transitioning but I'm transitioning.
00:27Yes.
00:27And how do you go about transitioning?
00:30It's a daunting process.
00:32It is.
00:33What do you recommend?
00:34Well, first of all, first thing I would suggest is finding out what you want to transition into.
00:41How exactly you want to wear your hair.
00:43Since I've known you, you've always worn your hair beautiful, full, and smooth.
00:47And I love it full.
00:48So with your transition, you may not necessarily be looking to wear your hair naturally curly all the time.
00:53So you have a clear idea of where you're going in your transition.
00:57I think people really need to just kind of identify what they want to do with their hair because people think I'm going to wear my hair naturally curly, it's going to be simple, it's going to be a wash and go, I'm out the door in five minutes.
01:10Not always the case.
01:11It's work.
01:11Yeah, it is work.
01:12I mean, a lot of us haven't seen our natural curl since we were kids, some of us.
01:16So I think kind of like experiencing and learning how to work with your natural curl again is going to be challenging.
01:23But just identifying what you want to do and understanding that it may take time to achieve whatever the final look is that you want.
01:29It does take time.
01:30It, um, I would say that it takes a few years actually if you are transitioning slow.
01:34Now, do you recommend the big chop or do you, I've gone slowly, so I've cut a little bit along the way.
01:40It really depends on the state of your hair when you decide to become chemical free.
01:46Again, like I said, since I've known you, your hair has always been very healthy.
01:50Whoever, that's a testament to the person who has been doing your relaxers because you can't really see a line of demarcation.
01:55If your hair is over-processed, broken, damaged, you see a huge line of demarcation when your natural curl starts to grow out.
02:02So for some people, the only option they have is to do the big cut.
02:07So, again, and if you are in that transition, you really don't want to let go of that line.
02:11I like to call people hybrids, you know, half curly, half straight.
02:15I'm a hybrid.
02:16I'm a hybrid too.
02:17You're a hybrid?
02:18I'm a hybrid.
02:18But for some of the people who just opt to not do the big cut, they can do styles that kind of help promote a curly look,
02:27like a twist set, a rod set, a roller set, something that gets their ends, their straight ends, get into a curly pattern.
02:33Now, speaking of curl, Tippi has come out with her own curly cream.
02:37So we are introducing today exclusively, we have, Tippi is going to show us her curly cream and how to use it.
02:44Now, we have the curly cream, you say we don't have to be completely natural to use the curly cream.
02:50No, you don't have to be a hybrid.
02:52I do suggest that you, or at least a hybrid, you don't have to be 100% natural.
02:59If you are a hybrid like myself, what I do is I start at night, I shampoo and I condition, and I do my leave-in conditioner,
03:06and then I apply my curly cream, and I put my hair in two big braids.
03:09While it's wet?
03:10While it's wet.
03:11Do you douse it, should it be full, or should it be, like, completely slab it on, or?
03:16It does, um, it, you should definitely, it should be pretty distributed evenly throughout the hair.
03:22Gotcha.
03:22So I do about two pumps per side, um, so.
03:25And she has a lot of hair, guys, so.
03:26I do a lot of hair, I do.
03:27You don't need her that much.
03:28And it's full of, uh, coconut oil and argan oil, and it has an organic silicone, which helps strengthen the hair,
03:34but it really helps, like, the consistency, it just glides on really widely.
03:37Nice, nice.
03:38If the hair is wet, if the hair must be wet.
03:40So, uh, after applying the product, I put my hair in two braids, and I go to sleep.
03:46Nice.
03:46And when I wake up, I kind of just diffuse my hair to let it dry.
03:50I take out the braid and anything else that might not curl, like the front, because it was
03:54down in two braids, I just hit with a little curling iron, and that's how I achieve my hair.
03:59So you got these curls from using that product, the braids.
04:02Yeah, putting it in two big braids, and then once it was dry, I just curled around the top
04:07with a curling iron.
04:08All right, that's simple, guys.
04:09I think that's something we can do.
04:11It's the holidays.
04:12It's time to get our hair done.
04:14We're at home.
04:15We're on vacation.
04:16We're with the kids.
04:16So these are the times that you want to experiment with your hair.
04:19Because I understand if you're transitioning that it is daunting, and it does take time.
04:24So this is the best time to experience.
04:26Don't you agree?
04:26I do agree.
