Can't Keep Your Hair Moisturized? We Got You!
Transcript
00:00My name is Ophelia, I'm from the Bronx, New York.
00:06I'd like to know how to retain moisture in my hair from product buildup.
00:10My name is Tiara and I'm from Jamaica, Queens, New York.
00:13How do I retain moisture with my color-treated ends?
00:16And what products can I use in order to, you know, keep the moisture up?
00:19Ooh, moisture, moisture, moisture.
00:22Ngozi, I'll start with you.
00:23Yeah, no, moisture is huge, especially for people who have coarser textures of hair.
00:28And a lot of times we think the coarseness of our hair means that it's super, super dry.
00:33And then just something as simple as putting water on it just to break it down and like it literally can soften your hair.
00:40So a lot of times I say people don't condition their hair enough.
00:43And if moisture, if you can start with water and you start with conditioning your hair more often,
00:49and then it's a matter of finding a cream-based product that works for your hair that you can apply on it usually when it's wet,
00:55especially if you have kinkier textures of hair, and then using an oil to seal and lock in that moisture.
01:01I think a lot of people think oils are moisturizers, so they wake up every day and throw a bunch of oil on their head
01:07and they're like, coconut oil is not doing it for me.
01:09You're like, well, where's the moisturizer?
01:11So I always say, you know, wet your hair, get a really good cream-based moisturizer, and then put oil on it.
01:19But you have to condition your hair often.
01:21And Tippi, when it comes to color, as a young lady asked, are there different rules for color?
01:25Absolutely.
01:26So just with the hair strand in general, you have a hair strand.
01:28I like to kind of give people the analogy, just think of it like a corn, right?
01:32So you have these layers of cuticle.
01:34What happens is the color gets trapped inside of there.
01:37And one really great thing to help retain moisture and also to help retain sheen, shine, and just a more vibrant color,
01:44is that once you've gotten your color, you should get like a clear rinse.
01:47Oh.
01:48And you can actually even buy them in the store.
01:49So never am I advocating you doing your own hair color at home.
01:52I just need to be clear.
01:53I know.
01:54I know.
01:55I know.
01:56I know.
01:57I know.
01:58But you can buy a clear rinse, and that is almost like a conditioner.
02:03And basically, you apply it to your hair, you sit under a dryer just like you would with your conditioner,
02:07and it puts a very light layer of coating all over your hair, so it helps to retain and seal in moisture, actually.
02:13I've been known to put lotion on my hair.
02:15Mm-hmm.
02:16Because I have, under my natural weave, I have natural hair.
02:18Under my natural weave?
02:20So when my hair is very, very coarse.
02:23So I will use even like a lubiderm lotion.
02:26Really?
02:27When I get out of the water, yeah, and get out of the water like swimming or whatever,
02:31and I will put that on my hair because that keeps the moisture in.
02:33I thought it was just me with my Baldy.
02:35I'll do that.
02:36No.
02:37Because when you don't have anything else, it'll work.
02:38It'll work.
02:39Yes.
02:40Am I going to strap in just hair?
02:41I did.
02:42I will.
02:43You know what I mean?
02:44I will.
02:45I will.
02:46I will.
02:47I will.
02:48I will.
02:49I will.
02:50I will.
