00:00Hi, my name is Mayima, I'm from Brooklyn, and I would like to know how would I be able
00:07to blend my hair going through a transition without cutting my hair off?
00:10My name is Shakira Hightower, I live in Atlanta, Georgia.
00:14I've had lots for about two decades, and I'm really excited about a new hairstyle.
00:21I have about four inches of new growth.
00:24I'm not ready for a big chop just yet, and I don't want it to get tangled when I shampoo.
00:29Essence Live really needs your help.
00:32Lots and lots of what ifs, what ifs, what ifs.
00:34Ellen, I'll start with you, any tips on transitioning from relaxed to natural or 20 years of locks?
00:39Yeah, well when you're transitioning, the problem is that your natural hair is stronger than what's
00:44out there that has the chemicals on it, even the part that's locked.
00:47So you really have to figure out a way to smooth it out.
00:50So a way to do that, I like to do when people wash their hair and you have the two different
00:55textures, I like to twist it or braid it before I start to blow it.
00:58So that the hair that's natural doesn't dry up.
01:01And if it dries, it's drying elongated already because you twisted it out.
01:05All right, we have another set of questions for you guys.
01:07I'm Alex from Brooklyn, and my question is, to wrap or not to wrap?
01:11Do you want curls in the morning with natural hair?
01:13Should you wear a scarf at night or not wear a scarf?
01:15Ooh, that's been a big one.
01:18Everybody in the office, Tippi should definitely get that one.
01:20Tippi, I'm going to let you go with that, but just a little side note, we had a big,
01:24big debate in the office like, did your man like that?
01:26Did your man not like that?
01:27Get over here.
01:28But to wrap or not to wrap?
01:29Okay, so.
01:30She got the finger out.
01:31Well, because the man conversation is a whole different scenario.
01:35So I'll just tell my husband, like, listen, you're going to see me for like an hour,
01:38and then you're going to go to sleep.
01:39And then you're going to wake up, and then you're going to see me all day.
01:41So just leave me alone for the hour.
01:43You know what I mean?
01:44Just get over it.
01:45But so protecting your hair.
01:48So I really think it depends on your hair texture, how you're wearing it.
01:51But if you're wearing it straight, 100% absolutely percent wrap your hair.
01:56And if you are wearing your hair in its natural state, 100% absolutely protect it,
02:00but it doesn't necessarily have to be a full covered wrap.
