00:00Today on Essence Live, activist and rapper David Banner
00:03joined us to talk about his album,
00:05but he ended up dropping some knowledge.
00:08I like to say this, and in any way does this reflect Essence.
00:12This only reflects David Banner.
00:14But white supremacy only respects two things.
00:18That's a loss of life and a loss of finance.
00:22The hottest comedy group on YouTube stops by.
00:25But right now, it's time for the Hot List.
00:30Little Riley Curry has nabbed her first modeling deal.
00:33Steph and Aisha Curry's precocious three-year-old
00:36has been chosen by the shoe company Fresh Picked
00:38to introduce their next step moccasins for toddlers.
00:41If you missed Missy Elliott at Essence Fest this year, no worries.
00:47The hip-hop icon is back with a new video.
00:50Where they from?
00:52From the innovative costumes to the thumping beats
00:54and dancing marionettes, this video is classic Missy,
00:57and we are totally here for it.
00:59Two. Two.
01:00A Springfield, Illinois woman gave us all types of life
01:03when she was caught reading a book at a Donald Trump rally,
01:06and she gave absolutely zero all about it.
01:10One. One.
01:12University of Missouri police have arrested a 20-year-old man
01:15for making terrorist threats to black students at the school.
01:18This comes after weeks of unrest over what many students say
01:21is a lax attitude by university administrators
01:24towards racism and intolerance.
01:26But, Miss Zoo isn't alone.
01:28There have also been protests at Yale, Duke,
01:30and University of Southern California
01:32over everything from white girls-only parties
01:34to culturally insensitive Halloween costumes.
01:37So, what's a black student at a predominantly white institution to do?
01:41It's Thursday, November 12th, and Essence Live starts now.
01:53Welcome to Essence Live.
01:54I'm your host, Dana Blair.
01:55We've all been following the stories of racism at University of Missouri,
01:59and we did have two Miss Zoo sophomores scheduled to appear on our show
02:03to discuss their experiences at the school.
02:05However, the students later declined, citing concerns for their safety.
02:09But we still want to hear from you.
02:11If you're a college student who has dealt with racism at your school,
02:14use the hashtag Essence Live to join the conversation.
02:17In studio now is Taylor Lewis, an Essence editorial assistant
02:21who says the Miss Zoo crisis hit close to home for her, literally.
02:24Welcome, Taylor.
02:26Thank you for joining us.
02:27Of course.
02:28Now, you wrote the article on Essence.com
02:30around the protests and informing all of our viewers
02:32and audience members out there.
02:33Tell us about your connection to the school.
02:35Well, I grew up in a suburb outside of Kansas City, Missouri.
02:39It's about two hours west of Columbia,
02:41where the University of Missouri is.
02:43And I had a lot of classmates, naturally, who went to the University of Missouri.
02:48And as a matter of fact, I briefly considered going to MU.
02:51One, because they have a very good journalism program there.
02:55But whenever I spoke to my uncle about it, he literally threatened to disown me.
02:59Why?
03:00Well, I come from a long line of Jayhawks, for one.
03:01Second of all, he pointed out that the city of Columbia is very racist.
03:06It was racist whenever he was applying to colleges in the 1970s.
03:09And it still is.
03:11And for that matter, I decided to attend the University of Kansas.
03:13So, he was concerned about the climate, how it may or may not affect you,
03:17situations you may find yourself in.
03:18Exactly. Exactly.
03:19And what can you tell us about the overall climate in Missouri now for African Americans?
03:25Well, it is changing.
03:27Is this like a post-Ferguson change, you feel, or is this something that's been slowly in the works?
03:33It's post-Ferguson.
03:34Back home, it wasn't uncommon, you know, to see a Ford pickup truck driving around with a Confederate flag on it.
03:40I understand.
03:41From Louisiana.
03:42Right?
03:43Exactly.
03:44I went to a predominantly white high school and there were minor instances of discrimination there.
03:49But post-Ferguson, it feels like the state is just in a state of turmoil and is literally moving closer to home.
03:56Do you feel like there's something bubbling under the surface?
03:59I mean, this was a very peaceful protest by the students, but the response has been that of threats and violence.
04:05What do you think the trajectory might be moving forward?
04:08I think that honestly this is a catalyst for conversations that need to be had.
04:13Students have had these concerns for a really long time and I think it's excellent that these Mizzou students are talking about it and getting these conversations out there and letting people know that this is happening.
04:24We are facing this on a daily basis.
04:26And what would you say to other college students watching who might feel discouraged about continuing their studies that can sometimes be in uncomfortable, unwelcoming environments?
04:35You know, I think coming from, I went to the University of Kansas ultimately.
04:40Which is a predominantly white institution.
04:42Exactly.
04:43And I faced minor, again, minor cases of discrimination, nothing major or noteworthy.
04:51But I think it's important for students everywhere at PWIs to remember that they have a right to be on campus.
04:57They are entitled to an education just like any other student of any race is entitled to.
05:02And it's important to keep reminding themselves of that.
05:05And also, like the Mizzou students, to keep having those conversations with your friends and professors and mentors and students of other cultures.
05:11Because that's how you ultimately lead to change.
05:13Definitely.
05:14Thank you so very much, Taylor, for joining us.
05:15Of course.
05:17And of course, you have to come back to Essence Live.
05:18I will.
05:19And you can read her story in full on the Mizzou Crisis at Essence.com.
05:22Later, we go behind the Essence cover with Naomi Harris.
05:25But first, I sat down with David Banner to talk about his new song, Apologizing to Black Women.
05:30But the conversation quickly turned to racism, religion, and more.
05:34Take a look.
05:35Your latest song, Marry Me, is a love letter to black women.
05:39Why did you want to write this piece?
05:41Me talking to so many women, they would always tell me how just black women in general didn't feel protected, nor did they feel wanted.
05:51I said, especially in my career, I've done enough damage myself.
05:58So when I speak, in no way am I criticizing other men and what they do in their music.
06:04But, you know, I have to sort of cleanse my soul and sort of, you know, balance my vibrations out.
06:10And it was crazy because my assistant called me crying when she heard the song.
06:15Really?
06:16Because I sent it to her to write the lyrics out so that, you know, you can put them online.
06:21And, you know, I always talked to her like, why you being such a punk, girl?
06:25Like, woman up!
06:27And she said, I had given up on the institution of marriage.
06:32Really?
06:33And she said, whether you and Rudy Kearns meant that or not, you thought of it.
06:39And to know that someone even thinks like that anymore is a blessing.
06:48So it was very important to me to do that.
06:51And I hope that, you know, black women especially support me.
06:57I definitely hear what you're saying.
06:59You hear more and more these days, especially black women like late 20s, early 30s.
07:04We're in that difficult time, if you will, where most people aren't talking about marriage.
07:09So it is different to be speaking about marriage.
07:11It is.
07:12You see how I'm saying that?
07:13I'm like, it's different.
07:14You don't hear that often.
07:15You don't hear that often.
07:16Especially coming from a black man.
07:17The other thing is that a friend of mine told me, he said, you know, David Benner,
07:21I understand that you're a Pan-Africanist and you want to change the world.
07:26And, you know, you want to start the revolution for the people.
07:30He said, but until we mend what was broken in slavery, and that was that relationship between
07:37men and women, black men and women, until we mold that and mend that back, you will never
07:46be able to move forward as a whole.
07:49It was like, look at the families in America, the Rothschilds, the Bushes and, you know, the
07:56Kennedy.
07:57It's families.
07:58Right.
07:59Throughout history, it was always families.
08:01So it's hard for us to start and build that type of momentum when we don't have the base.
08:08And that's the love between a man and a woman.
08:10Now, you mentioned a little bit earlier that you felt that you've already done enough
08:13damage.
08:14What was that moment for you where you said, you know what, I'm about to make this shift?
08:19When I had the number one song, you know, as far as hip hop was concerned, Chris Brown
08:26I had Get Like Me.
08:27I got a global peak at how America was portraying black men from America.
08:34Mm-hmm.
08:35And at that time, that's when reality shows, as we know it now, first started to take off.
08:40Mm-hmm.
08:41So for the most part, what people got of black men globally was rap videos and reality TV
08:48shows.
08:49Right.
08:50And honestly, we looked like monkeys.
08:53But I wasn't living what I was speaking, for the most part, as far as the positive aspect
08:59of it.
09:00But when I took that trip and I got an opportunity to see what I was a part of, I was actually
09:07fulfilling the goals of white supremacy.
09:11Mm-hmm.
09:12But I would like to say this, it is very clear to me that white people are trying to
09:21see what will black men do.
09:25We kill you, you didn't do nothing.
09:28Right.
09:29We start killing your kids, you didn't do nothing.
09:33Now we're killing your daughters and beating your daughters in your face.
09:38What are you going to do?
09:39Right.
09:40They basically go, what are you going to do?
09:42What are you going to do?
09:43And we're not doing anything.
09:45I like to say this, and in any way does this reflect essence.
09:48It only reflects David Banner.
09:50Mm-hmm.
09:51But white supremacy only respects two things.
09:54That's the loss of life and the loss of finances.
09:57I was about to say money.
09:58You said finance, yes.
09:59Same thing.
10:00Until black people threaten one of those two things, they will forever continue to do
10:05what they do.
10:06So instead of blaming an external source, blame yourself.
10:11Because until we blame ourselves, we will never change.
10:14Anything.
10:15The things that are going on with our women, with our own lives and with our communities.
10:19Mm-hmm.
10:20We are the problem.
10:21Thank you very much, David Banner.
10:23You're welcome.
10:24I can sit here and talk with you forever about this.
10:26Essence Live, David Banner, please be sure to check out his album, The God Box.
10:30Wait.
10:31Essence, thank you for letting me come on here and get so philosophical.
10:34And thank you for giving me the opportunity to apologize to the things that I've done to
10:42our women.
10:43And this was the best place and this was the place that I wanted to come and say, you know,
10:49thank you for allowing me to change because my career is what it is right now because of
10:55women.
10:56Mm-hmm.
10:57Ladies, I will make it up.
10:58Oh, Lord.
10:59Not like this.
11:00They told me not to do this.
11:01Not like this.
11:02Not like this.
11:03The New Testament
11:04Who In The New Testament
11:05My new twist on playing Moneypenny versus the old way that Moneypenny has been played
11:24is that she's tougher.
11:25And I love that.
11:26I think that that's what the audience really needed.
11:29And I think that that's what makes it fun and exciting to watch.
11:32Idris Elba in one word is just plain hot. Daniel Craig in one word intense. It really
11:45feels surreal to be part of James Bond and it really genuinely almost hasn't hit me yet
11:52because it's so big. I grew up watching James Bond and I've always loved the Bond franchise
11:58so it's a dream come true. Essence has always supported you and what you stand for. Now
12:07imagine Essence could be even more offering a selection of new beauty products specially

12:40On the other hand... Bega!
12:50Welcome back to Essence Live. That was a snippet of Dating a Jamaican which has over 2.5 million views on YouTube.
12:56Joining me now in studio, lots of shenanigans, the stars and creators of that and other hilarious videos, Dormtainment.
13:03Welcome back to Essence Live. Thank you for having us.
13:05Thank you for coming to Essence Live. If you wouldn't mind, starting here on the end, tell us your name.
13:08I am Rome Green Jr. Chaz Miller. Cameron Miller. Emmanuel Richards. Tay. Who is that?
13:15What is your name? Oh, I thought I was reading it. Mike. It's okay, it's okay.
13:19Welcome, guys. All right. So, Cam, I'm gonna start with you because obviously some of these other fellas don't follow instructions.
13:26Mm-hmm. How did Dormtainment get started?
13:28We all started in college. We were all funny guys and we started posting funny videos on Facebook.
13:34Mm-hmm. And then a lot of people started liking it. Well, there was no like button. They were commenting on it.
13:38Mm-hmm. And we like, let's make money. Right? Mm-hmm.
13:41We didn't make money, but yeah. But that's like, that was the motivation. That was the overall goal.
13:47All right. The overall goal. That makes sense to me. All right. So, we have a game that you're gonna play here with us in studio.
13:52We're calling this Essence Storytellers. We're gonna give you a scenario and you guys will tell us the story.
13:57So, here's how it works. When I blow the whistle, the timer will start. The first player will pick a dialogue card from the box.
14:03You have it over there. Or the glass jar, I should say. Yeah, glass jar.
14:06And you have to incorporate that sentence seamlessly into the storyline. So, every time I blow the whistle, the next player must pull a dialogue card and continue the story.
14:14Okay? Okay. All right. So, we'll keep going until the time runs out. All right. Let's do it. Let's do it. Let's do it.
14:18All right. Now, you have to stay on thing. Stay on thing. Stay on the thing. That's the thing. All right.
14:22Okay. So, are you ready? Here's the thing. Okay. Choosing between Raven and Water Melandria for cuffing season.
14:29Oh. I know this is difficult for you. Okay. I don't even know who they are. Mine seems like he's already ready. Ready? Yeah.
14:35Okay. You got this? Okay. Go.
14:39Man, I remember back in the day when I could get those for free. Raven and Water Melandria tickets to go to the concert later on the night.
14:46Right. Yes. Because, you know, they got a concert later on the night. I think it's Jeezy. I think it's, uh...
14:52Yeah. And that's funny that you mentioned Raven and what was the other one? Water Melandria. Water Melandria.
15:01Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Because, you know, I usually slip in their DMs at night. Okay. You know what I'm saying?
15:05Before you get to them. Okay. Okay. You know what I'm saying? Because you get to them, it's all over with. Okay.
15:08And, you know, what I also do is, after...
15:12And when I slipped into a DM, she got mad because I asked if she was wearing a lace front wig. Oh.
15:20Because, I mean, it looked like she was wearing a lace front wig. Well, I don't know. No. I have to go get an uptown face. Okay.
15:26Yeah, that's real crazy. Real crazy. And the crazy thing about it, while I'm reading, is that I don't understand why your mom still does laundry.
15:38When I don't get it. You know what I'm saying? At the end of the day, I...
15:41Keep, keep it so it won't pick it again.
15:45And I'm up there, and I'm watching her on the dang on TV, and she refused to watch Six Guys One Car. Oh.
15:52And I'm like, come on, man. Really? Like, you gonna... That's... That's... That's not.
15:57That's not.
15:58Take it out. Yeah, take it out. So, hopefully.
16:01So, I say, she got mad because I asked if she was wearing...
16:05Oh, y'all gotta put it... I gotta take it out. I can't help it if I look better than most men.
16:10Oh, that's it. That's true.
16:12That's why Raven... That's why Raven be hollering at me. That's what you're stating.
16:16I thought we were going with facts, though. We're gonna keep going with the facts.
16:20And it was definitely a post and delete situation when I seen Watermelon Drea talk about me publicly, and Raven had retweeted it.
16:28And I was like, you know, how am I gonna choose when y'all both got, you know, got a thing going for me, you know?
16:34Is that the end of the game or something? Oh, you got 30 seconds.
16:39And listen, now they both after me, but don't judge me because I still got a flip phone.
16:45Okay. I feel you.
16:50Man, I ain't gonna lie. This is pretty shitty. I just wish I brought my wet wipes with me.
16:54Oh, yeah. You got to get the wet wipes.
16:55That's true.
16:56Oh, you're talking about the situation.
16:57Oh, yeah, the situation.
16:58I was talking about the wet wipes for that mirror, man.
17:00But, you know...
17:01Oh.
17:05You know, that's crazy.
17:06Man, I think I'm going to try online dating from now on.
17:09Okay. Instead of Raven, yeah.
17:10Yeah, because you know Watermelon Drea and Raven Simone.
17:14You know what...
17:15Sex?
17:16Yeah, because they always think riding to the bus is romantic and all that.
17:20Oh, man.
17:25Come on, man.
17:26You're not even right.
17:28Okay, so, guys, I have to ask you. So, which one is it? Is it Raven or Watermelon-Landria?
17:32Watermelon-Landria. Off top. Off top.
17:34Off top. Off top.
17:35Why?
17:36Because she got substance.
17:37Yeah, yo.
17:38Who'd you pick?
17:39Well, you know, um, Beyonce said drink that watermelon.
17:41Yeah, I'm going to go look.
17:42And you're going to drink that watermelon.
17:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:45And we're done.
17:46And we're done.
17:47If you're in the New York area, you can catch them tonight at the Gramercy Theater,
17:50but the show is sold out, so maybe you should have moved a little bit faster.
17:53However, next time, if you follow them on social media at Dormtainment,
17:56maybe you can get your tickets on time.
17:58Thank you guys so much for joining us.
18:00I just want to say, um, ladies, I'm single.
18:02Uh-huh.
18:03My number is 404-
18:04Uh-huh.
18:05See, we're not even about this life.
18:06We're not even about this life.
18:07Coming up next, Slade or Shade, but first, Essence recently honored the black women of Bond.
18:09Check it out.
18:10I'm here with Halle Berry, Trina Parks.
18:23I'm here with my Bond family.
18:25It's wonderful that they're bringing the Bond people together.
18:30And they are highlighting the black women of Bond.
18:34Oh, to be among all these other ladies, that's a good feeling.
18:38You know?
18:39I didn't even think about being the first.
18:41Unbelievable.
18:42It really is.
18:43I mean, it's so iconic.
18:44I never thought this would ever happen.
18:46I just want to say, I am so proud and really proud to stand up here with these gorgeous,
18:51talented women, ones that walk before me, that paved the way.
18:56I have so much respect.
18:57I'm humbled to be here and be reminded like everybody else, what you ladies did and the path that you paid.
19:05So, Naomi and I, be here with you.
19:09Thank you for the debt that you paid.
19:11I will never forget my experience.
19:14It's one of the best experiences of my entire life, working with the Rock with you.
19:20Yes, everyone says that.
19:22Right?
19:23I wanted to say, from the bottom of my heart,
19:26thank you, each and every one of you.
19:29You've inspired me, each and every one of you, with your incredible performances,
19:39and with your representation of black female beauty.
19:44I really want to thank Bonds and the franchise for being forward-thinking,
19:50and for being one of the very few franchises at that time,
19:55that actually represented black women.
19:58I am on my life with you.
20:00Yes, I am on your table with me.
20:03Yes, I am on my table with you.

22:31Okay, so let's begin.
22:32Diversity or the lack thereof on our TV screens has always been an ongoing issue.
22:37Shows with predominant casts of color like Empire, Fresh Off the Boat, and Black-ish have all been doing significantly well in the primetime television arena.
22:44But many feel we still have a long way to go.
22:47Aziz Ansari addressed this matter in a recent New York Times article.
22:50He wrote about his acting experience and questioned how hard filmmakers are really trying to cast non-white actors to play characters of color.
22:58So, Aziz recently visited The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
23:02Here's what jokingly he had to say when Colbert asked him about his article.
23:06You've talked about the, uh, not enough, uh, like, uh, people of color minorities represented on television.
23:12Is having you on my show, does that count at all?
23:14Yeah.
23:15Does it count?
23:16Yeah.
23:16I'm trying to do my part.
23:17I'm trying to do my part.
23:18It's really diverse right now.
23:19It's, like, 50% diverse.
23:2150% of the people on TV are not white.
23:24Yeah.
23:24Yes.
23:25Yeah.
23:25This is, like, an all-time high for CBS.
23:28Yeah.
23:31Well, all right.
23:32So, what are your thoughts on Aziz's article?
23:34Slade or shade?
23:36Slade, Slade, Slade.
23:37All right, Sean, let me start with you.
23:39Because you did, like, a slade with a shake.
23:40I feel like there's...
23:41No.
23:41Oh, my God.
23:42That's the issue.
23:42Because I'm standing for Aziz Ansari.
23:44Okay.
23:44He absolutely slayed that.
23:46Not only did he make Colbert feel awkward, which Colbert never feels awkward, by just simply
23:52speaking the truth.
23:54CBS never has people of color really on their station, one.
23:58Right.
23:58And, too, in that article, he talks about Indian Americans.
24:02And these are people that we don't hear about.
24:03We hear about black people.
24:05We hear about Hispanic people.
24:06And having them have some sort of spotlight.
24:08But what about everybody else?
24:09It's the time that we take a stand.
24:11And I think the time really is now.
24:13So, perfectly played, perfect timing.
24:15Okay.
24:16Yeah, man.
24:16You slayed it.
24:17I feel the same exact way.
24:18Because for Aziz to really own that narrative, to be steering that conversation, is dope.
24:24Because, of course, when we talk about racial disparities, we always look at it as, like,
24:27two titans in the ring.
24:28Right.
24:29We got the white man over here, and we got the black man over here.
24:31But when it comes to race, it's like, guys, there are a lot more shades to the rainbow.
24:35And then, too, what's awesome is his role as a comedian.
24:39Because he can kind of, like, de-awkwardize really, really heavy conversations and just make
24:45them more digestible for, like, everyone.
24:47So, two thumbs up.
24:50And, Keri, you also had a slade.
24:51I definitely had a slade.
24:52Let's talk about it.
24:53Yeah.
24:53I'm a comedian.
24:54I have aspirations to be on Late Night.
24:57And I thought that I was with Aziz all the way.
25:00Because diversity is a huge problem.
25:03And Colbert caught a lot of heat, actually, initially, when he first made the switch to
25:07The Late Show.
25:08Because, you know, he didn't have any women in his writer's room, for one.
25:12And he certainly didn't have any people of color in his writer's room.
25:15So, I love that Aziz just took him to task and was like, oh, yeah, I'm going to call
25:18you out on your own show.
25:20Check, please.
25:21Right.
25:21Okay?
25:22You open the door, so I'm going to walk through.
25:23Yes.
25:23I'm going to step in.
25:25Kick you down the door.
25:26I'm coming, too.
25:28We all coming through.
25:29All right.
25:29So, a couple of days ago, Instagram account Freddie O Art posted a controversial Facebook
25:34screen grab.
25:35The post, which was later reposted by The Shade Room, was from a woman who was fed up with
25:39her future husband's baby mama and her attempts to ruin her relationship with her fiancé.
25:44To communicate that their relationship was going strong, the future bride created custom
25:49personal checks.
25:50Yes, I said that.
25:50That read, we're getting married, and featured photos of the engaged couple and their engagement
25:56ring.
25:56All right.
25:56So, the caption read, baby mama doesn't want to see us together, always causing trouble
26:01in our lives because she wants us to break up.
26:03This is how she'll be receiving her child support check next week and the week after that
26:07and the week after that.
26:09Eventually, I'll have some made with our wedding pics.
26:12Got to do what it takes to let crazy women like her know I'm not going anywhere.
26:15Damn.
26:16So, get used to my face.
26:17Take your check and go sit down somewhere.
26:19And that was really the caption, like I wasn't ad-loy, that was the caption.
26:22Okay, so how do we feel about this one?
26:23On the count of three, Slade or Shade?
26:25One, two, three.
26:26Slade, Shade, and Slade.
26:28All right, Tracy, why the Shade?
26:29Oh, wait.
26:30Is that a Slashay or a Shade?
26:32It's 80% Shade.
26:34Okay, okay.
26:35I know, but there's just, I'm being pulled in so many different directions.
26:40But the reason why I went with Shade is because, all right, it is very entertaining when
26:44it comes to public consumption.
26:45But then, it's not entertainment because she's not a character.
26:49She's not an actress.
26:50Like, this is her actual life.
26:53And when you go around doing really crazy, like, just out of control, mean tasks towards
27:00the mother of your fiancé's child.
27:02I'm not going to go with baby mama.
27:04You're going to kindle someone to slit your freaking neck.
27:08Like, now all the gloves are off is what you're saying.
27:10Yes, and then she's going to get all of these likes, all of these comments, and it's going
27:13to influence someone else to start to get on the Pied Piper line of being an a-hole.
27:18So, I'm not for it.
27:19Not the Pied Piper line.
27:20Okay.
27:21I don't like it.
27:21All right, now, Kara, you had a...
27:22I was giving you some shade.
27:24You had a...
27:24You had a Slade, right?
27:26I Slade.
27:27Here's the thing.
27:28We automatically assume that she's being the messy one.
27:31We don't know what this baby mother did.
27:33We don't know.
27:34We don't know.
27:35We don't have all the facts, okay?
27:36But we shouldn't know.
27:38We should...
27:38But...
27:39So, what you have to think is, what drove this lady to do something so extreme?
27:43Because she would have to be a really crazy person to just do this.
27:46This is clearly somebody that's listening.
27:48I done told you a million times, and clearly you don't get it.
27:52So, sometimes you got to be petty to let people know.
27:54Like, I think it's hilarious, but I also think, like, baby mamas be crazy sometimes.
28:00That's true.
28:00I don't know who the baby...
28:01I don't know who the mama in question is.
28:03I don't know.
28:03But I say Slade, because you got to be creative with what...
28:07Because she didn't punch her in the face.
28:08That's true.
28:08Because that would have been crazy.
28:09Okay, that's true.
28:09So, you know?
28:10Right.
28:10I respect that.
28:11Mm-hmm.
28:11But you got to love getting that check.
28:13You said Slade.
28:13I said Slade only because I've never seen somebody more petty, and I'm, like, totally here for it.
28:19She's very petty LaBelle.
28:20Very petty LaBelle.
28:21Yeah, you are very petty.
28:21She's petty and cocoa bread.
28:22But also, I mean, I'm not a mom, and I've never been a mom, but, like, I just think if
28:27I was getting a check, I don't care whose face was on it, my baby's eating.
28:31So, you can do whatever you want, and you look like, again, the petty one.
28:35I'm still getting the money.
28:36Oh.
28:37So, that's why I'm kind of, like, all right, like...
28:38But she was always getting the money, even without the face on the check.
28:41Yeah, but now, the money may come more often because the fiance is, like, I want you to
28:48see it.
28:48That's what we want.
28:49That's what we want.
28:50All right.
28:51It's true.
28:51So, crazy.
28:53He's, like, I've never been a mom.
28:54So, our last story is definitely a touchy one.
28:57Carla Lee, the mother of Tyshawn Lee, the nine-year-old Chicago boy who was lured into
29:01an alley and fatally shot, is being accused of spending money donated through a GoFundMe
29:06account.
29:07The money was intended for funeral expenses, but she used it on, allegedly, she used it on a
29:11new car.
29:12Carla took to her Instagram page to defend herself in a series of videos, which have
29:15since been deleted.
29:17There have been conflicting reports.
29:18Initially, some said she used all of the money to purchase the new car.
29:21Then, there were some reports that she used her own money for the car's down payment.
29:26Okay.
29:26So, what are your thoughts on the count of three?
29:28Slade or Shade?
29:30One, two, three.
29:31Yep.
29:31Shade, Shade.
29:33Slade.
29:33Slade.
29:34What?
29:34You freaking wild.
29:35Hold on.
29:35Carrie, I'm going to come to you first, my love.
29:38Carrie, what are you...
29:38I know you're in shock with this one.
29:41Well, at first, I was kind of like, well, what kind of car did she buy?
29:44You know what I mean?
29:45I had to look.
29:46I'm not going to lie.
29:46I clicked the link.
29:47I saw it was a 2015-something.
29:49I said, she's dead wrong.
29:50Right.
29:50It would be one thing if she just got herself a little hooptie, a little consolation hooptie,
29:54you know what I'm saying?
29:54A my condolence Chevrolet.
29:57That would be something different.
29:58But, you know, I just think...
30:00I think the timing is off.
30:01I think you look like you took advantage of people.
30:03You're talking about you wanting to bury your child, but you out here riding it, riding around
30:06and getting it.
30:07So I just think that, you know, maybe, maybe...
30:10I saw the clip.
30:11She was like, I need a car for my protection.
30:13Girl, cars ain't bulletproof.
30:14So, I don't know if she knows of any bulletproof cars, but so she's shady for that.
30:19Okay.
30:20All right, Tracy.
30:21I completely concur, because when you're doing crowdfunding, you have to be so transparent
30:26with where that money is going to be funneled towards.
30:29And you're over here just, like, pulling on our freaking tear strings, trying to increase
30:33our sympathy for you.
30:35I'm thinking this is going to be going to some type of memorial to represent your son,
30:40and this is just going to your own self-gratification.
30:42So, Nabu.
30:44And I wonder where she's riding to.
30:45She said it's our safety.
30:46I think she's still sitting in the same city.
30:48Yes, right up in Chicago.
30:49She's not that scared.
30:49Right.
30:50She said, my son would have wanted me to have it.
30:53I don't think that's how it works.
30:54I don't think your son would have wanted you to have a toy car for yourself.
30:58Okay, and Sean, you get the final word on this, because you slayed.
31:02Let's talk about it.
31:03My only thing about crowdfunding, and I think that you're absolutely right, but if we read
31:07between the lines, she wanted to raise $10,000, okay?
31:11She raised $17,500.
31:14She did what she had to do for her son with the $10,000.
31:17What she needed to do with the other $7,500 is up to her.
31:21It's like if you give a homeless person a dollar, you're giving them a dollar to decide
31:25what they want to do with it.
31:26You can't decide what they do.
31:28Not if they say, I need a dollar for food, and you give them a dollar for food, and their
31:32food is crap.
31:33No.
31:33But you gave them the dollar, so allow them to do what they want to do with it.
31:37That's my thought.
31:38I also hope she bought a car to get to work or to, like, maybe drive to some programs about
31:42gun violence.
31:43I don't know.
31:44Maybe she needs a car.
31:45What about creating a program?
31:45What we're going to do is make sure you get escorted, because I know that sometimes
31:49I'm going to have some comments on that.
31:51Well, my Kickstarter will be starting later today.
31:53I won't be donating.
31:55Send along money.
31:56So sorry.
31:56A penny is what you're getting from me.
31:58Thank you, all of you, Sean, Tracy, and Carrie, for joining us.
32:01Carrie, you have to come back now.
32:02You're family now.
32:03Yeah, okay.
32:03All right.
32:03Thank you to all of our guests who joined us today, and of course, our wonderful viewers
32:07streaming us live.
32:08All right.
32:09Next week, it is our Thanksgiving special with some surprise celebrity guests.
32:12So please, be sure to tune in.
32:14I'll see you next week.
32:15Same place, same time.
32:16Sean, trying to steal my move.
32:17Same fabulous host.
32:19I'm Dana Blair.
32:19Bye-bye.
32:20Bye-bye.
32:28Bye-bye.
32:29Bye-bye.
