Transcript
00:00I love that you shared your own personal story about how even as a doctor there
00:04was a moment where you chose to ignore something because you were like I'm
00:08young I'm a woman I'm this and that as a doctor right that's powerful so can we
00:12talk a little bit just speaking in terms of educating the next generation what
00:16are some common misconceptions about heart health and women just common
00:20things that we tell ourselves that aren't true because I think it's
00:23important to dispel myth first fact here yeah for example I'm healthy because I'm
00:28young exactly that I mean certainly we are typically healthier when we're young
00:33but you know we you can if you have the symptoms no matter how young you are you
00:39should take again those symptoms seriously and again I think most women for many
00:42years and this is a collective issue we always focused on men heart attacks and
00:48men we weren't having even the conversations around communities of
00:53color and how they might experience and you could just pick an illness
00:58differently how they may respond to particular treatment alternative
01:03differently we know that around blood pressure as folks and my fellow my
01:09colleagues in the audience can answer that that we certainly have to tailor our
01:13treatment sometimes based on race and ethnicity but yes women I'm too young for a
01:22heart attack women don't have heart attacks or I'm at a healthy weight many of you may have
01:29heard it I'm not sure how long ago this was maybe even about 20 years ago there was an avid
01:33runner you know and he was I guess healthy and he had a heart attack so again we cannot lull our
01:44shelves into any false sense of comfort because we don't fit you know what's in the box and
01:51physicians know this certainly we learn a lot and we learn a lot about patients and typical symptoms
01:57but we also know that our patients are not on paper our patients are humans in front of us and we are
02:06working hard at the AMA and our colleagues are to figure out how to best target our treatment needs and
02:12meet the needs of again communities of color and particularly women it sounds like we have to
02:17release the pressure and both physically you know and also emotionally the stress all of it so let's
02:23talk a little bit about how we can release that pressure and the partnership that AMA has with essence
02:27and how we're going to do that we are excited about a campaign that we are starting in May and it is
02:33called release the pressure I've talked a lot this morning about the numbers and we want to make
02:39sure that everyone again knows your what your blood pressure is and again your your number your optimal
02:45number may be different from mine and that's okay so if someone in your family says girl don't worry
02:51about that that's normal that's mine now you have to figure out what's typical and normal for you talk
02:58that over with your physician and again you will learn more about our recommendations regarding monitoring
03:04your blood pressure at home again it's about eating right sometimes that's eating healthier I don't even
03:11like to use the term right and that's why it's important that we as black women get together and
03:18talk about this it's important that we have a squad you know folks who can hold us accountable and we can hold
03:26others accountable it's easy to say I'm not gonna I'm gonna have steak every day for a month you
03:33know and you need somebody to say no girl you're not gonna have steak every day for a month you know
03:38right right yeah come on sister girl right and so again you will learn more about that but we really
03:45want folks to know their their numbers and monitor the blood pressure in the context of having a trusted
03:52relationship and knowing and appreciating the symptoms of heart disease so that women can know the symptoms
04:01and then make sure they are getting the accountable care that we all deserve
